The Primeval Current is likely based on “the divine fiery river; the very first outflow of the words of God” from Hesiod’s Theogony. At the beginning of time, God spoke into the primordial Chaos, applying order to it and allowing for individual things to start separating out from the homogeneity.
There are several instances in Elden Ring showing that the creators took some inspiration from the Azoth series of illustrations by Basil Valentine. One example is an illustration looking extremely similar to Godwyn’s modern mermaid-esque form, leading one to conclude that the creators used this illustration as inspiration (the story behind the character in the illustration fits Godwyn lore-wise, as well).
Another illustration depicts what appears to be a glintstone crown in the left corner, and an infant in the right, presenting a duality between the advancement of knowledge despite its costs, and childlike blissful ignorance. The duality of Sellen and Rennala’s attitudes towards researching the Primeval Current. The ‘sphere of stars’ in the center of the illustration is encircled with a flowing scroll, with a Latin phrase that is usually shortened to the acronym VITRIOL. The translation is roughly, “Seek the interior of the Earth and you shall find the hidden stone.” Some medieval alchemists believed that this phrase specifically was the first words of God. The Primeval Current.
So, why did Lusat and Azur root themselves in the ground and start turning into crystal after glimpsing the Primeval Current? Because God told them to.

Not unless you were making the effort. Elden Ring relies on environmental story-telling and the context provided by item descriptions. It's not expected that you would know much if you aren't one to pay attention in the game world, hence various channels dedicated to piecing it all together for people who don't have the time or energy.

- most of the things in the video has been told through description of various items. It just depends how you play the game. I'm someone who has to collect everything and read what it says so most things said in this video were known to me but that would too cumbersome for some other people who probably preffer more action and pace which is fine as well. Everyone plays how they like and enjoy it 🙂
