I was originally drawn to the fandom back in 2017 by original species. Namely, Dutch Angel Dragons. One of the first examples of a furry and a fursuit I ever saw was Telephone. It lead me into creating my first ever fursona, Kimura the Dutch Angel Dragon. Though I ended up switching to a cat/dragon hybrid in 2020, as I felt it fit me better. But I'm planning to make a Dutchie secondary sona at some point! Dutch Angel Dragons will always have a special place in my heart for this reason.

Cadmus started off as my late boyfriends character. He was not a furry but was fur friendly and he actually had his own fursuit. He was part of an extremely small minority of people who where not furries but owned and would wear his own fursuit. At first after his death I would wear his fursuit as I missed him but after a wile I made his fursuit my own character but keeping the name my late boyfriend gave the character. I have done many upgrades over the last almost two decades but now he is my favorite fursuit to wear to ren fairs. Its extremely rare for me to wear my fursona fursuit as that fursuit is quite old and shows it and I have lots of more newer fursuits that I can wear.
I kind of begrudgingly made a wolfsona after years of avoiding it lol. My brother has had a wolfsona for years, so eventually I just gave in and made one to match his. Otherwise I just don't really relate to mammals much. My main fursona is just an abstract, vaguely "animal shaped" living dream entity, but I've also got bugsonas and other nonmammals. I figure it kind of just came with being autistic and feeling like an oddball even among other social outcasts. I never really cared about being unique on purpose, I just always gravitated to what feels right for me emotionally. xP
Well hello there soul sibling- I'm also autistic! I've felt like the oddball among oddballs so much that even in this one autism group I went to once I felt out of place ^^' and yeah, my sona is a species I 100% made up. Recently I've even been seriously thinking about making it canon that she can lol, basically astral project her spirit :p so much like your dream entity!! Funnily enough I literally had a special interest in wolves growing up- and yet no wolfsona for me, I can't really identify with them :(
Most of my furry characters are extinct animals (I love paleontology), but my main sona is a sort of chimera of a ton of different traits I liked. They have zygodactyl feet like a parrot, a long tail with floof at the end, a feathered crest, long and thin ears, a reptile-like nose, forked tongue, antennae, and back spines. I call the species Chimallagi, and have considered making a species ref sheet for them. Due to in-lore origins, there's a huge potential for creative customizations!
My original fursona was... a wolf. *coughs* But a standard grey wolf, not blue. A few months after I'd discovered the fandom in 2000, I discovered the original species 'chakat', a hermaphroditic feline taur species created in 1995 for stories, but even just a few years later there were a few people who'd adopted the species for their own fursona. I've no idea how many there are now, but I suspect a few hundred at least.
Animals are amazing and beautiful but also instinctual and feral, which I don't really resonate with. Hence the Protogen sona... but I recommend people also consider Pokémon sonas! I really owe it to Nintendo for making me a furry ^^; Their character designs are somewhat animal-like but they display a LOT of sentience. They communicate with sound and body language, generally have some primitive dialogue with their trainers, and in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon universes, are basically just humans, with their own society and mutually shared language. They also come with unique anatomy and inherent powers that connect to nature yet draw from their own skill/stamina.
I absolutely agree more Pokémon sonas!! The only big drawback is that changing the colors easily makes them unrecognizable :( everyone knows a dog even if it's a sparkledog, but if you make an umbreon pink & green only a select few Pokémon fans are gonna have a clue.
Most of my sona species is based off real animals but they are still unique as their not well known unless an individual is a zoologist or any related to that field.
When I was creating my original species I was taking inspiration from real life, in my case fruits and veggies. Try choosing a certain topic and adding unique features to it!
I kinda like furries it’s half and half because my friend hates them so much and I try not to talk about it around him but it’s so hard and I mean so hard can you give me some advice please

I adore original species for the world building and lore: Avali, Sergals, Tozols, Synths, etc. no wonder I have so many original species OCs!
If we all picked real species at random it would be funny to see how many beetle fursonas there would be.

My fursona is a Moth/Bee hybrid, its kinda rare to see bugsona’s though at Fursquared I saw an adorable spider partial that was just the cutest
