Very true. Most N64 games are about 10 MegaBytes.... It may not be the grand experience we know for the PC version, but the fact that the N64 has almost everything still crammed in here is absolutely unbelievable. 1.2GB crushed into 10-20 MB is astonishing, and the 64 version isn't bad all things considered! Lots of fun using an analog stick in place of a mouse, haha.
I believe the original install size was about 250 MB. I think the larger install size we see today from BNet downloads is because of a lack of compression.
+memoryresident Yes and no...WarCraft 3 came out 2002 and had rally point mining...as well as auto repair...WarCraft 3 was the most advanced game Blizzard has produced in the early 2000s now StarCraft 2 holds the title for most advanced...in fact StarCraft 2 may be the most advanced game ever so far...you can import custom models, you can make a large scale MMO which UphevalArts is doing with SCU...you can make a third person shooter...even a first person if you're skilled enough with camera and such...
But the one part that makes WarCraft 3 much more advanced...the ability to cast spells directly on the unit's wireframes in the gorup selection...StarCraft 2 does not have that [unless you would make a custom script for it for your own map/mod [which the mod can then be applied to multiple maps]...but yes Brood War is a great game and StarCraft 64 [which still is the original plus Brood War, I believe I am not sure though without watching more] still has the same content... however it has even less because if they started right from this exact spot they missed [optional] Bootcamp, and the first true mission where you meet Raynor and must train an army of 10 marines [still a bit of a boot camp but it is a true mission still].

the N64 is actually preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetyy AMAZING, with THIS, C&C, RE2 they totally knocked it out of the park and paved way for the awesome but underrated back then GameCube ~
My brother have and still play Starcraft 64 atleast once a week since it came out we're mid twenty a now and still love this game. :) hardest scenario on multiplayer would be 2 Zerg (us) vs 4 Protoss (CPU) on Hunters 2nd hardest maybe Terran instead of Protoss
CC does make a valid point. If you're really a good gamer, you should be able to use any control scheme. I beat Conkers Bad Fur Day, emulated on a PC with keyboard mapped controls, because I didn't have a pc compatible controller, and also a number of PS1 games
audio takes up a lot of space on the disc (or cartridge in this case) they had to cut Starcraft and Starcraft: Broodwar down from 2 CDs (about 1.4 Gigabytes) to only 32 Megabytes. it's a surprise they were able to keep as much as they did
Yes! I definitely agree. I would be playing Conker's Bad Fur Day and this game online. There's still fun to be had in local if you have friends to come over, or you can just simply bring the game and play at their house it since a majority of N64 games save on the cartridge, and not the controller pak.
I always wanted to play this and Resident Evil 2 on the N64. I wish both would have been playable with the N64 set on the Gamecube. I love the subtle differences between this N64 game and the original.
Man,I remember when I was all young and shit, and didn't understand this game,I would build the biggest, stylish looking Terran base I could, without knowledge of what half of the buildings even did. I would spend hours upon hours just building until the enemy AI got bored of waiting and sent in a squad of slightly upgraded soldiers to wake me up. I being the stupid little kid I was usually lost those fights and I watched as my men and my base got destroyed
seems weird that the zerg icon for vespane is on the terran campaign. musta been tough to play this with the n64 controller, though i think its great that the music is the same in this version, it was a great soundtrack.
You'd be surprised apparently. The SC1 CD had 606 MB of stuff, BW's CD was another ~600, and a fresh install of both from the version that came with the SC2: WOL collector's edition takes a cool 1.21 GB of hard drive space. There are a lot of games of that era that are comparable. (e.g. Steam reports that HL1, released Nov. '98 (between SC1 and BW), is taking 964 MB.)
Some maps, especially the "Defend the temple co-op" map lagged like fuck. 30 seconds per frame. Literally, sometimes. StarCraft just wasn't meant to be played on something as Fisher Price processored as the N64 was
The N64 came out in 1996, so you would think his dad is in high school at the time rather than middle school for 6th, or 7th grade. His dad now would be 24, or 25 years old on my estimate from 1996 (6th or 7th grade) to 2012 (high school graduate.) That would make the child no older than 4, or 5 yrs old depending on his birth. Seriously I think he meant to say "My dad had it since I WAS in 6th or 7th grade."
That's an undeniable fact. There were first person shooters on consoles before Halo, but besides exclusives like Goldeneye, most people preferred to play them on PC with a keyboard and mouse. Halo paved the way for games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Half-Life, and Counter Strike to be released on consoles. I'm not saying games like Call of Duty wouldn't be on consoles now without Halo... I'm saying nobody had faith in console shooters UNTIL Halo.
I remember purchasing this simply for the two player. We only had one PC at the time and my sister played it with me, vs CPU. Good times. it wasn't a bad port really..a little clunky at times, but what can you do with a controller.. still good.
I should still have this... just need a proper working controller and rewire my a/v cables my dog chewed through when he was a pup... RIP to him now though =( Thanks for the nostalgia without digging through boxes!
If only Nintendo ask and pay blizzard to port this to Nintendo switch as a stand alone game like they did for Doom 64. If I remember right StarCraft 64 had broodwar expansion as well if you have the expansion pack in the n64. A StarCraft 64 HD edition would sell pretty well especially the abilities to play on the go. I know I would buy it even at full price of 59.99.
Can the campaign be played through in co-op? I've been playing Diablo on the PS1 with a buddy, and I'm thinking about getting this for when we finish. I have an N64 with the expansion pak.
This was probably one of, if not, the first game I ever played as a kid. I loved it so much from the campaign to multiplayer. My favorite was playing against AI and using cheats just to have a fun time lol. Might have to search for the console and game again so I can purchase, hope they're still some out there.
Why not just get the proper Starcraft? The old version is freeware from Blizzard, Starcraft Remastered is a terrific remaster, just get the original game, its great!
Lmao i got this for my 9th birthday, i was the only kid to borrow it from blockbuster, so the store manager let me have it, i threw this out along with my N64 4 years ago, SO MUCH REGRETT :c Fuck i miss multiplayer splitscreen........... :'(

I'm going to answer this seriously: Venomancer from Dota series uses a hydralisk model, which blizzard added into the World Editor. Hydralisk is a zerg unit from Starcraft-another of Blizzard's game- and is among the most known units.
1998: Starcraft is released. One of the most recognizable units is the Hydralisk, which can be seen at 00:56. 2002: Warcraft 3 is released. In one of the single player maps there is a hidden Hydralisk, as an easter egg referencing the previous Blizzard game, Starcraft. 2004: DotA comes out. It is a custom map for Warcraft 3. After some versions, the Hydralisk model is incorporated into DotA as a new hero, and is renamed "Venomancer". 2005: DotA gains popularity. The worst Warcraft 3 players, tired of being thoroughly destroyed at a strategy game, due to their lack of strategic thinking and understanding of the game, switch to DotA. They suddenly get matched with other Warcraft 3 dropouts, with comparable strategical skills. This pleases them. Due to the nature of DotA, blind luck becomes a major winning factor, as opposed to strategic thinking. Therefore these players manage to win roughly half of their games, which is the win ratio given by a coin toss. This is way better than what they were used to do in Warcraft 3, so this pleases them. Being an inherently multiplayer game, DotA allows all losers to blame their allies, and ease their frustration. This pleases them. 2006: DotA gains even more popularity. Its straightforward gameplay and basic mechanics attract more casual players, who are not interested in learning how to master a strategic game, how to control a diversified army, or how to think logically, but just want easy wins at easy games. Several players start buying Warcraft 3 just to play DotA, for this very reason. 2007: DotA gains even more popularity. Basshunter's DotA song is widely known also outside the DotA community. Most DotA players don't realize that they are playing a Warcraft 3 custom map. They believe that DotA *is* Warcraft 3. They know the existence of a ladder of Warcraft 3, but instead of realizing that it's merely a type of tournament for online Warcraft 3 games, they think it's a secondary game mode for DotA, which they don't want to know about. 2014: Noufil Barrios watches a RUclips video about Starcraft, and asks if the Hydralisk is the Venomancer from DotA. John Kang manages to produce a serious answer, which inexplicably doesn't contain the word "fuck".
Now that we have Starcraft Remastered, we need an Unmastered version that looks like this, only supports gamepads, and has no networked multiplayer: split screen only.
I had no idea this actually existed.

@@Gutigwolfe Very, the command and conquer remastered had banger themes soundtracks tho, just combine remastered cinematics, soundtracks, features with the original C&C 3D and cool menu and boom.
I remember seeing this version first in some video game store playing on a TV; it partly inspired me to buy it for PC but now......
I can hardly believe that this is a real thing looking back, like holy shit....This and Halo Wars are the only RTSs I can even think of on console, and at least the latter was on a powerful console and designed with the controller in mind
Command and Conquer was also on the N64. Red Alert 3, Kane's Wrath, Supreme Commander, and a few others were on the xbox 360/ PS3.
Supreme Commander on console was an enormous fucking mistake though. I laughed when I founded out it existed.
Woah
Never seen or even imagined this
As a kid, my older brother had Age of Empires 2 on the PS2, but I never knew about this!
Talk about a trip to the past! I can't believe this is the starcraft game I grew up with! so many memories :D Now I look at starcraft 2 and think DAMN...they came a loonnnggg way.
You cant compare this to any Starcraft.
This is a PORT of Starcraft to N64, its way worse than the original.
This is right. Some games did not use the entire CD, but Starcraft and SC:Brood War definitely did.
i had N64 and now Switch. If i didnt buy expansionpack i would never know this game existed at Nintendo :D . i cant imagine how hard it must be to play with joy cons instead of mouse :x
It's pretty easy to use the analog stick actually
Bruh I had my uncle’s old N64 at my childhood home for YEARS and I never knew this existed! My family used to love StarCraft
Am I the only one in pain watching this? Watching an RTS played with a controller just HURTS!!
I don't know what was more painful, the fact that this was played with a controller or how bad his macro was (and how impossible it really is to macro with a controller). PC MASTER RACE FOREVER! CONSOLE PEASANTS BE DAMNED!!!
It would feel strange playing on a controller. I liked halo wars to but you didnt really have to macro in it, it was done for you.
Uh... Brutal Legend would love to speak with you :/
And think of the two-player mode, you would gain infinite vision over your enemy -.- all the trouble you would get in to do that on real sc, just think of it...
앤드류 스 조르단 lol im a pc gamer and i think that the n64 destroyes everything inclunding pc
Just found this game at my hobby shop for 50$, can't wait to try it!
thank you for supporting the original release.
When watching this video, I remember the good ol' days before SC2. The memories.
For the very brief time my family had an N64 we had this edition
Starcraft and Perfect Dark on the same console. Got em both still but yeah Two of the greatest ever
I’ve been playing Starcraft for 17 years now... I was today years old when I found out this exists
So have you been playing on the PC this whole time?
Been playing a lot of sc1 on powerpc mac lately.
the N64 is actually preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetyy AMAZING, with THIS, C&C, RE2 they totally knocked it out of the park and paved way for the awesome but underrated back then GameCube ~
I definitely played this and loved it…good times.
Thanks, Jesse Cox
All the hours playing my brothers in SC64.....screen watching was a punishable offense.
I can't play this with a keyboard and a mouse...
surely you jest
Sursurk lol, i'm use keyboard
I use my keyboard only!
I use an AI to play for me.
"pain in the rump"
I would've taken pain in the arse over that
This with dedicated servers for multiplayer would dominate the mobile gaming market.
audio takes up a lot of space on the disc (or cartridge in this case)
they had to cut Starcraft and Starcraft: Broodwar down from 2 CDs (about 1.4 Gigabytes) to only 32 Megabytes. it's a surprise they were able to keep as much as they did
Yes! I definitely agree. I would be playing Conker's Bad Fur Day and this game online. There's still fun to be had in local if you have friends to come over, or you can just simply bring the game and play at their house it since a majority of N64 games save on the cartridge, and not the controller pak.
Statecraft and Starcraft 2 are my favorite games of all time.
I always wanted to play this and Resident Evil 2 on the N64. I wish both would have been playable with the N64 set on the Gamecube.
I love the subtle differences between this N64 game and the original.
Oh god, I now remember how poorly all those portraits transferred into lower resolution!
“Give me something to shoot.”
when a character or unit says something that corresponds with the campaign.like when Raynor is talking about the infested command center
the fact that this game was crammed on the N64 is a feat in itself.
And probably is why it was never done again; this was probably the ONLY time StarCraft was ported to a console.
I'm pretty sure it was. You could only play multiplayer if you had the expansion thing.
seems weird that the zerg icon for vespane is on the terran campaign. musta been tough to play this with the n64 controller, though i think its great that the music is the same in this version, it was a great soundtrack.
And there was a 2 player diablo 1 for ps1, it was a strange time.
Wow, this is pretty good for a port
Good side on this version:
SCV will auto mine to minerals and you can select 18 units. Dang! Why this didnt implemented in PC version?
I believe those maps are available for regular Starcraft... they came with the brood war expansion.
AHAH! someone else who has played the N64 version... well done my friend!
Sweet! This game goes for around 4-500 bucks in Sweden. Pretty rare!
I had a copy of this game. Sadly I lost it in a friends house fire 😢
Sorry to hear that :( did you ever get another one?
Oof! That's gotta hurt
Never knew this came out for the N64
Some maps, especially the "Defend the temple co-op" map lagged like fuck. 30 seconds per frame. Literally, sometimes. StarCraft just wasn't meant to be played on something as Fisher Price processored as the N64 was
a thing that is good about this game is that you can select more than 12 units at a time
I remember being impressed with this game at the time , but I found it very difficult to play on a console.
Damn, that music is spot on.
Starcraft on N64 did require the RAM pak upgrade in order to play the Brood War missions.
Still character portraits? OMG! It had animations in '99!
Good times. it wasn't a bad port really..a little clunky at times, but what can you do with a controller.. still good.
how did you screen capture the n64?
i used a magnavox dvd recorder.
I should still have this... just need a proper working controller and rewire my a/v cables my dog chewed through when he was a pup... RIP to him now though =(
Thanks for the nostalgia without digging through boxes!
You can just buy replacement av cables for like $3 bro
If only Nintendo ask and pay blizzard to port this to Nintendo switch as a stand alone game like they did for Doom 64. If I remember right StarCraft 64 had broodwar expansion as well if you have the expansion pack in the n64. A StarCraft 64 HD edition would sell pretty well especially the abilities to play on the go. I know I would buy it even at full price of 59.99.
Can the campaign be played through in co-op? I've been playing Diablo on the PS1 with a buddy, and I'm thinking about getting this for when we finish. I have an N64 with the expansion pak.
No.
That awkward moment when you try to move units with your mouse.
I have this game on N64 too :D w/ the xpac for Brood. Loved owning my friends 3 v 1, I was a god in this game back in the day. Now for PC I'm shit..
I was just playing it last night on N64.
Also have the proper StarCraft an sc2 on pc
Lmao i got this for my 9th birthday, i was the only kid to borrow it from blockbuster, so the store manager let me have it, i threw this out along with my N64 4 years ago, SO MUCH REGRETT :c Fuck i miss multiplayer splitscreen........... :'(
***** If i could go back and stop myself, i would keep it!!
i mean back then, but still, holy f**kin shit, i got a question is Legend Of Zelda Majoras mask/Ocarina of time rare yet? cuz i got both of them along with Super Mario Bro's 64.
I recently picked up this game NIB(NEW & SEALED) for $30 from retail store. I'm wondering.. how much is this game currently on ebay & amazon?
00:56 its that venomancer on DOTA?
I'm going to answer this seriously:
Venomancer from Dota series uses a hydralisk model, which blizzard added into the World Editor. Hydralisk is a zerg unit from Starcraft-another of Blizzard's game- and is among the most known units.
Thanks for the info dude! :)
John Kang manages to produce a serious answer, which inexplicably doesn't contain the word "fuck".
aa i dont understand why someone would put this much effort into a youtube comment bur it was interesting and fun to read
mikeli0023 It wasn't that much of an effort, my mind spoke and I wrote it down.
I remember having this game and not seeing the point in it. I still to this game it find it appealing lol. I was always into FPS.
Qué pinches tutoriales ni instrucciones ni reviw's esto era juego puro y duro chinga. :)
ingles
Porq los mejicanos se expresan de esa manera tan asco???
Is the Expansion Pak required to be able to play the game like DK 64? Or is it recommended for the game to run & look smoother?
You can play it with the standard Jumper Pak, but the Expansion Pak is required to play the other episodes and factions
Now that we have Starcraft Remastered, we need an Unmastered version that looks like this, only supports gamepads, and has no networked multiplayer: split screen only.
I remember the TV commercials with a salty Saddam Hussein rage quitting.
