      Simon Huus Kristensen I will say this. There was so much miss opportunity in SC2 in term of story. The gameplay and level design is obviously better than the original SC by a mile no debate but the story. I will say if we could overlook Kerrigan, SC2 did bring some good into the table in term of story telling. Purifier and Taldirim are good example of this. Some new character that are great like Warfield and Alarak but my god Kerrigan story just fucking kill everything. She should have stay as a minion and make Amon a greater threat instead of behind the scene villain.
      I would say I enjoyed SC2 more from a gameplay single player perspective but story have to go to the original.

      When you hear that "celebration of the birth and death of stars" tone, it makes you wonder just how long this soul has been around and what they know that nobody from that long ago were ever aware of. It reminds me of the "planet" voice from Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri.

    Before the computer finished telling Zeratul of the creature that he was gazing upon, the Protoss warrior recoiled in horror away from the stasis cell. "No..." he muttered, the implication of what he had just witnessed dawning on him.
    "Magnificent, isn't it?", an impossibly deep voice called out. Every word seemed to reverberate many times, but against what? The templar ignited his warp blade and glanced around, but nothing was there except for his brothers in arms and the Terrans that have been "recruited" for this expedition.
    "What? Who are you?", Zeratul called out into the distance, at the same time trying to ascertain where the mysterious voice was coming from.
    "I've had many names throughout the millennia, young prodigal. You would know me best as Samir Duran", the Eldritch voice replied, seemingly emanating both from nowhere and everywhere at the same time.
    Duran! "Kerrigan's consort! Is this part of her twisted schemes?", the Prelate voiced his next thought. Anger flashed through his mind, replacing the fear that each word of this Duran had beaten into his brain moments before. First, the entire war to save the new home of the Protoss, then the treacherous corruption of his Matriarch, and now this monstrosity? Kerrigan seemed to find her way everywhere. Every misfortune seemed somehow connected to the Queen of Blades.
    "No. Young Kerrigan could not have engineered this grand experiment," Duran answered calmly"Although her rebirth into the Zerg Swarm has sped up my progress, I can assure you that this endeavor is quite beyond her narrow understanding", Duran continued in about the same matter as one would talk about the weather, or as close to it as this foul voice can get.
    "If you are not her pawn," Zeratul began, more confused than anything, " then what are you?". His observers, not to mention the noble Fenix before Kerrigan's abhorrent betrayal killed him, had clearly told him the name of the infested Terran that was serving her. How can this NOT be Kerrigan's doing?
    "I am a servant of a far greater power. " The mysterious Terran began, revealing some excitement "A power that has slept for countless ages. And is reflected in the creature within that cell".
    "Have you any conception of what you've created here? Do you have any idea what this... " Zeratul shouted. Whoever Duran served was playing with something that he can't POSSIBLY comprehend. Even the prophecies and Xel'Naga lore, so carefully studied by the Preservers, said little, except for the fact that a Hybrid would be the harbinger of unimaginable horror" ...this Hybrid is capable of?"
    "Of course I do. This creature is the completion of a cycle. Its role in the cosmic order was preordained when the stars were young. " Duran answered, clearly proud of what he had wrought for his illusive master. "Behold the culmination of your history," he finished with disdain, clearly feeling himself above the Protoss and anything that they could accomplish.
    The Dark Templar once more gazed upon the hideous form of the creature that was in hibernation before him. "All I behold is an abomination", he said disgustedly, turning his blade to put an end to this beast right here and then.
    Duran simply continued with his condescension towards the Protoss."Your violence, young prodigal, is typical. As is your inability to comprehend the greater scheme of things", he said nonchalantly. Then he once more revealed the pride that he felt in his creation, his superiority over the Protoss, and his seeming invincibility. At every word, the world around Zeratul seemed to freeze, as if the very universe wanted to hear what this entity had to say "You can destroy all of the specimens here. It will do you no good. For I have seeded the Hybrid on many, many worlds. You will never find them all before they awaken... And when they do... your universe will be changed... forever".
    With that, the dreadful voice fell silent.

    • @BotRetro
      @BotRetro 9 лет назад +132

      +MusicHaven2012 Legacy of the Void had a disappointing story. They either didn't know what they wanted to achieve with it since 1998, or they changed something since then. Something important. Seeing Kerrigan as common foe of all races in the ending of the Brood War ********spoiler alert********* becomes an ally and finally Xel'Naga is weird and sounds like a X-Men cartoon story. I mean Kerrigan betrayed everybody like 2-3 throughout the original StarCraft - even if she could be good, she could never be trusted by anyone. Especially Artanis, who saw how she killed Aldaris, Fenix and how she manipulated Matriarch Raszagal.

      +The Retrobot Artanis was never a fan of Aldaris as a few years later he disbanded the Judicator caste because of corruption. And in HotS Keriigan explains that while she was the original Queen of Blades she felt a dark influence which was long gone. That influence drove her to betray the others about a million times.
      But the problem is that in LotV not many people knew Artanis as much as they should. I played Brood War way back in the day and played the campaign a million times. I learned to know the characters including Artanis while many other people think that he is just a random protoss warrior who became Hierarch because of some heroic deeds. I for one found it brilliant when Blizzard announced that Artanis shall be the main Protagonist of LotV instead of Zeratul. Although I take the story that Blizzard made for granted in LotV and for me its nothing less than I expected, but I still understand the criticism it gets from fans.

      +Intreducor But Kerrigan used "Dark influence" as an explanation for her past actions before the Brood War betrayal too. Now here's a thought: Duran is an Agent of the Xel'Naga, seeking to bring about the rise of the hybrid. The Xel'Naga created the Zerg and Protoss possessing Purities of Essence and Form, respectively. The cosmic cycle, I think, is the reunion of these two species into the 'New' Xel'Naga. Duran explicitly says that the universe will be 'changed'... perhaps wishing for the cycle to go on, while the Dark Voice seems to want to break the cycle, bringing the galaxy under his eternal domination.

    This is what Duran meant by the ´´Completion´´ of a cycle:
    The xel'naga were incredibly long-lived even by protoss standards, but not immortal; eventually their species would come to an end. In the interest of survival they planned to create new xel'naga by uplifting two species. A pair of qualities was required and these were defined by the xel'naga as the purity of essence and the purity of form, and each uplifted species would be targeted for one of them. Over an extraordinarily long period of time, the two species would naturally come together and merge, forming the next generation of xel'naga and beginning the cycle anew. The xel'naga life cycle has manifested many times, so often that time itself was affected by it.

      toxic Itzi however I have also read in books or wikis that Amon is referred to as "the fallen xelnaga" At one point in, I believe Wings of Liberty, Zeratul says "the xelnaga will ascend their creation and all that will remain of them will be the fallen one." That ties into what toxic was saying, the xelnaga would eventually be gone and they sired all the races in an attempt to save their race....which is a bit farfetched, but its one of the best ideas Ive heard to date. Its know that Amon created the overmind with the intention of eliminating the protoss then creating the hybrid "in his own image" So perhaps, after Narud/Duran awakens him use the artifact and the power it sapped from kerrigan and although the other xelnagas have ascended, he will reamin and with the protoss decimated by kerrigan and the swarms, it would be easy to take control, create the hybrids then completely rule the universe. Just your basic bad guy that wants everyone dead. What do you guys think? Ive been kicking around a lot of ideas but there are still holes in the story I feel. If they dont explain a lot in legacy of the void i will be disappointed.

    • @toxicitzi357
      @toxicitzi357 9 лет назад +4

      Eric Sanino For a story like that, it wouldn't be the worst thing. Duran is by far the more interesting villain character of the bunch, all because of some personality traits that he has. His excitement for the experimentations, as well as the fact that they were indeed just experiments and not immediate successes, showing just how telling the advancement in genetics were, as well as each major character's reactions, like Zeratul's show of disgust and Duran's pride.
      the thing is, if you go for any kind of story, bad guy here and so forth, the most important thing about it is making that villain and their representative faction interesting, that makes a conflict all the more exciting and less tedious / boring. In Warcraft 2 to 3, Nerzhul was an amazing villain for the entire story, especially in Reign of Chaos where you don't even hear a single line of dialogue for him or see any appearances, but you know he is operating through other characters like Kel'Thuzad and so forth. What makes these characters are clear aims and a clear goal, two things defined by a very cut and dry ambition you can actually understand and maybe even relate to on a certain level of understanding.
      With Amon, you don't really get that kind of feeling, it's kind of like comparing Nerzhul or Sargeras to Deathwing. Amon and Deathwing just want destruction for destruction's sake, worse than that though, Amon's ambition is not even well established as insanity on his part, where as Deathwing's ambition was tied to him going completely insane after the dragon soul thing.

    • @ericsanino7341
      @ericsanino7341 9 лет назад +16

      Amons character is hardly revealed at all in the first two games which is extremely disappointing. We know he is a xelnaga and wishes to eliminate everything in the universe except him and the hybrid.. You are right to say his ambition or intention is NEVER discussed besides the casual "he will destroy everything" If Narud is indeed Duran and they hoped players would piece this together, I think they should have made that more clear so it made more sense why Mobious was working on the hybrid...that being said I felt Duran was built up as an interesting bad guy in Brood War. He was deceptive and smart, knew exactly what he was doing and his little moves here or there made all of the difference in the out come of the Brood Wars. He wanted either Kerrigan or the Overmind in complete control of the swarms and he straight up played everybody, even Zeratul. If we are to assume Duran is Narud then he straight up played everyone again in the two SC2 games. Using Jim to gather the articfact, using the terran army to battle Kerrigan on Char and deinfest her then subsequently using that energy to awaken Amon. Then, after he had no use for Kerrigan and the artifact, he gives it to Mengsk to take her out, knowing that she is aware of his plans and she is the only threat to them. So... (sorry for that long winded explanation) moral of the story Duran is a brilliant, cunning and at least to me very interesting villain. We know that Amon is working through him but we are still ignorant to a lot of his character traits and intentions. Disappointing thus far but im hoping it comes together in LOV

      I personally think this was the smarter choice, from a storytelling perspective. The fact that they only describe the hybrid in this game without ever actually showing them to you, it makes your mind race with possibilities. Your imagination is far more compelling than reality, and the less they show you the monster, the scarier it is. Leaving this little teaser, before going on to the sequel, is way more interesting than just SHOWING you the bad guy right away.

    2:20 Am I crazy or does the icon for Zeratul on the UI panel look a bit like a Hybrid?

    I always liked this darker, more badass interpretation of Zeratul's character from SC1. In SC2, Zeratul is just this weird, bumbling old man raving about a prophecy about the end of the universe, it's really a very bland flanderization of his character.
    Even just something like here, where he says, "The audacity of these Terrans; If they wish to learn more about Protoss Warriors, I will give them a first hand lesson!"
    Like, that's so much more of an interesting, poetic threat than just, "Urgh, we must stop the Terrans from doing this evil experiment D:

    @duskcrawler There are actually two mysterious entities: Blizzard specifically stated that the 'dark voice' and the 'voice in the darkness' are two different beings.

    people who complain of the storyline, should know that kerrigan was influence by two powers, the overmind and amon, overmind died, she recover from his control, but she has the OVERWHELMING HATE of amons inside her, thats why she betray cuz she cant tolerate menks or any other terran exept jim, cuz on sc1 she let him go, and on brood wars, do it again after kill fenix, remember raynor was there too, on the hyperion, on orbit but he was there, and she let him go again, that proves that she stin human, but influenced by amon, whnen she is clean the influence and void power return to the void that resurect amon, DAM DURAN...
    i think people just go a shoot on all 3 campaings and never read or listen to the history, cuz its not a really bad plot, what i cant see, is artanis like "i forgive you" knowing he want to kill her 4 times and after all she tried to kill many times... thats the more stupid plot of the entire game, but it hurts cuz its the final chapter and its just sunk like the titanic....
    AND WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE XEL NAGA FORM LIKE JEAN GRAY FENIX OF XMEN, WHY BLIZZARD WHY!!!!!!!

    Weird how they said it was a zergling, when hybrids are obviously based on the hydralisk strain

    The only thing I would change in the otherwise perfect StarCraft and Brood War is the 2nd last part of Duran's speech when he tries to speak in a prophecy/mystical way.
    "Completion of a cycle"
    "Pre-ordained when the stars was young."
    I think it should be enough that this conflict is contained solely in our galaxy (and more specifically, the Koprulu Sector) without it involving the whole universe (makes the universe seem small.) That's why I hated the change in tone in the sequel (otherwise a great game):
    - Ancient One?
    - Dark One?
    - Xel'Naga were born in the Void
    - Purity of Form and Purity of Essence part of a cycle?
    - The First Spawning Pool being the most powerful (Isnt' that like saying the first Macintosh is the most powerful of all).

    where was duran talking to zeratul from? Is he overseeing this installation, and those humans manning it, what faction do they belong to?

      The Terrans are mercenaries hired/mindcontrolled by Duran, and duran is presumably safe somewhere in the installation

      Considering what Duran is, he probably used telepathy.
