First of all, I want to start out with saying that I am a huge fan of the Shiren the Wanderer / Mystery Dungeon series. I am very interested in playing Shiren 2 (this game) and Shiren 5, but the language barrier makes it quite difficult. If I were capable, I would personally work on a translation patch for Shiren 2. That being said, I cannot say that ChunSoft made a mistake. They made the right move by making this Japanese-exclusive. You see, this game is not really an "RPG". It's actually a sub-genre of RPG called a roguelike. Roguelike games are somewhat niche in that the strong difficulty and permadeath are not popular in Western gaming, even at this time. Specifically, the Shiren series is heavily inspired by NetHack, a game that's almost exclusively English (there is just too much text to make a viable translation, although there have been several attempts, including JNetHack, a translation to Japanese). NetHack is (or at least, was) popular among those that play roguelikes, but it's simply not a popular genre of gaming. So not only is it an unpopular sub-genre of RPG, it is also very Japanese-themed, which is going to alienate a lot of the potential buyer market. Without a really good localization team, some things are just going to be lost in translation or simply not make any sense at all to the player. It would be very difficult to bring this game to the Western market not only because of the amount of translation needed, but the careful localization process that must accompany it. The first game, for the SNES, does have a very nice translation patch made by Aeon Genesis, and a port for the DS came out in Japan. It was actually localized here, no doubt due to the success of other Mystery Dungeon titles such as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Chocobo Dungeon. If you like NetHack-style games and want a graphical version you could play on a console, Shiren is definitely the way to go. I hope someday someone does make a translation patch or it gets ported and has a chance to be localized. Here's to hoping it gets ported to the 3DS and comes out in English!
Shiren 3 and 5+ were localized too, but Atlus did a terrible job with 3 hiding from the audience what Shiren truly is (hard and punishing, but also kind and rewarding). But Aksis who brought 5+ for Vita is on the right track. Critical reviews has been nicer to Shiren and gameplays are more popular too. Maybe this is the right time. With rogulites (FTL, Spelunky, Rogue Legacy) becoming famous and with Let's Plays teaching people the basics and the possibilities (like it was with Minecraft), maybe NOW Shiren stand a chance on the western market.
I couldn't agree more. I'm really excited about Shiren 5+'s localization. At the time Shiren 2 was released, it would have been a financial flop in the west, but I think the western market now would at least be open about the idea. Traditional roguelikes and their kin will always be niche, though.

So in the end: PSX got three english Mystery Dungeon games (Chocobo 1 and 2 and Torneko) so probably Shiren was not localized either because it was a n64 game or because the setting was not seen as appealing as the other games. Or maybe because it was an original chunsoft IP and they didn't manage to get a distribution deal, while torneko and chocobo had the dungeon warrior and final fantasy branding
The first Shiren for the SNES received a very good translation and Shiren DS2 has a item/monster/menu tranlation (no dialogues) and I hope someday Shiren 4, 2, GB and Asuka's (for Dreamcast) will be translated.

I think part of the reason that so many RPGs stayed in Japan after the N64 is that it's roughly around this time that gaming in the west started to go from semi niche hobby to the full fledged entertainment industry that it is today. Now in Japan gaming had always been a huge part of the culture but in the west it only really started to become REALLY main stream later on. Once this started to pick up steam you started to see a lot more western studios developing games and a general shift in the gaming tastes in the west over to FPSs, RTSs and the like. Before this point western developers had mostly tried to mimic their Japanese counterparts who were always FAR and away more successful. Personally I find this development to be a sad one as I never gravitated towards the type of games that seemed to dominate the western sphere of gaming to this days, all the CoD clones and the like. Love the western trend in gaming or hate it you have to admit that games like CoD, GTA and the like have been hugely financially successful. As tastes change Japanese companies just aren't as willing to invest the resources into localizing a game for the western market where they just aren't sure as they used to be back in the 90s that they have a large enough audience to recoup the costs. Again I find this a sad state of affairs :(

I had played the translated game for ~30 hours with no issues before abandoning it. It's a pretty standard roguelike with cute audio and visuals.
I've not played this, but the DS version is superb. Chunsoft really know what they're doing with console roguelikes. I think this is tied with Dezaemon 3D (DD version) for N64 game that still (as of late 2017) has not yet been translated.
Great work Glenn! There is little out there on this game, never played it, but i love the transparent in-game map... also the taiko drums when you level up! I would support a patch for this. I am a novice translator- but emulation and ROM hacking/manipulation aren't my speciality :( we need a team! :)
yeah to be honest I'm surprised that the same team that did the snes game didn't move onto this but i think it would be a huge job, the text doesn't look sprite based so shouldn't be impossible
next game in the series, the snes game was the same as the n64 however the n64 game was more like a high res version with some upgraded storyline points etc

I was so surprised to find out Mystery Dungeon was a series long before Pokemon did anything with it. After spending many hours on the first 2 series of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, I'd love to try the main series games.

I would love to work on an English patch for this game. I'm not fluent in Japanese yet but I think with the help of a dictionary I could make a half decent translation of this. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of coding for the N64 (or any programming) If you know anyone (Who knows how to program) who would like to work on this patch together please let me know.

I'm personally not a very huge RPG fan, but I will admit this does look good, and if it was in English I would consider giving it a look, as I do like the historical Japanese settings. Also I think the reason we did not get very many RPG titles on the N64 here where a few reasons: 1. lower sales of N64 units compared to PS1 2. cost of development was higher on N64 3. storage limits of N64 carts(reason Square put FF7 on PS1) 4. Nintendo wanted to focus on the 4 Player aspects of the N64 as a party system. 5. At least here in America it was mostly younger kids who owned the N64, and Teens/adults went for the PS1 and/or Sega Saturn. So yeah it's understandable looking back why we did not get as many RPG's on the system.
all valid points really, personally for me i think it was because of the storage size, to do a 3d rpg with the same depth as snes games would be a hard task....the lack of rpgs in 3d on the console must show why. holy magic century was ok but hardly any depth to it
The reason the US didn't get any N64 RPGs (with a few exceptions) is because the Playstation was cheaper to produce for, had faster load times, and games could be spread across multiple discs (meaning they weren't held back by limitations of a cartridge that existed at the time). All the major RPG companies were developing for the Playstation and other disc based systems (especially the Saturn), and they didn't bother with the N64. That's why the RPGs that were on the N64 just aren't as notable as other RPGs of the time. Also, developers knew that after Final Fantasy VII on the PS1, anyone who wanted RPGs owned a Playstation over an N64, and they continued to develop exclusively for Playstation. RPG gamers were not going to purchase an N64 for just one or two games, and developers and publishers knew this.
it's a DS rouge like. It was simple and fun. but the game relied ALOT on boobie humor and got repetitive toward the end.I like it and still play it from time to time. I don't know your personal preferences, so i'd recommend try a ROM, or borrowing it first. It was released in PAL territories if i remember. From what i saw. Shiren 2 had very similar maps and turn system. If you want to know anything specific let me know.

This game would never see a US release, simply because it's too Japanese culturally rich for Western audiences. But then I thought of Goemon and how this game has those cultural similarities (rice hats, kappas, errr... swords), and if only this series had a more popular, established US based, just maybe... Either way, thanks for putting this one in the spotlight... this is a real, late release oddity.
I really enjoyed the wii shiren the wanderer and this seems to be pretty good as far as dungeon crawly rpgs go. Im sure this will get a translation eventually although to be honest there are a lot of other jrpgs i would love to see translated first. The reason why we got no rpgs on the n64 is simply that Nintendo of america/europe secretly hates rpgs. At least thats what i like to belive. :-D
I blame the americans for overhyping FPS games on the N64 and making localizing companies to not bother translating the Lost Jrpgs on the system :/ another cool looking rpg we've never gotten was Zool!
I tend to think a combination of Nintendo 64 going cartridge based & Playstation pretty much becoming known for its RPGs is why the N64 didn't get the amount of RPGs like its predecessor did. Final Fantasy VII pretty much help made the Playstation a big name and the place for RPGs (and that game's ambition was only able to be contained on CDs, as it was said). Hence, the N64 selection for RPGs was sparse. I only think of 3 RPGs for the systems without needing to do research. One well received (Paper Mario), one cult status (Ogre Battle 64), and one known more for its infamous status because people played it since they wanted to play an RPG on the N64 but was left disappointed (Quest 64, which you probably knew it as Holy Magic Century since it was called that in Europe). I know on my part when I got a Playstation in 1999, I went and played those RPGs on the system because the N64 didn't cover that genre all that much while the Playstation cornered that market (and coming from someone who had an N64 first before getting a Playstation).
yeah it kinda allowed indie developers to afford to make console games before being an indie developer was a thing really. so many games from small studios on playstation which couldn't happen on n64
As a huge fan of the Siren the Wanderer Series, I would like to say you've summed up the story quite well. I was turned off by the town building mechanic in this game so I haven't played through the entire game, however from watching playthroughs of this game there's sadly not much content beside unlocking more dungeons. The story does build up a bit the more you explore dungeons and help rebuild the town, but for the most part the storyline is very cut and dry. I will go out of my way and say there is a section of the game where you see these weird aliens at a beach which speak Engrish. Here's a link if you're interested... the wii should of had a lot more of these types of games transleted and should of had more overall cause the vc was a joke and could have been wiis strongest point........
+John Violet It's by the same people, so they're just using their established blueprint. Their first Mystery Dungeon game was back in 93, and even that was based on the 1980 game Rogue.

i remember chocobo dungeon for ps1 mostry for the sprite characters over a 3d world , so here it is the same but it looks right...
yeah if you like the other mystery dungeon games then this is just the same with a different story than some of the spin offs

I've played Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and that was fun. No doubt this will be as good if not better than that.

I really enjoyed the wii shiren the wanderer and this seems to be pretty good as far as dungeon crawly rpgs go. Im sure this will get a translation eventually although to be honest there are a lot of other jrpgs i would love to see translated first. The reason why we got no rpgs on the n64 is simply that Nintendo of america/europe secretly hates rpgs. At least thats what i like to belive. :-D
I blame the americans for overhyping FPS games on the N64 and making localizing companies to not bother translating the Lost Jrpgs on the system :/ another cool looking rpg we've never gotten was Zool!

I tend to think a combination of Nintendo 64 going cartridge based & Playstation pretty much becoming known for its RPGs is why the N64 didn't get the amount of RPGs like its predecessor did. Final Fantasy VII pretty much help made the Playstation a big name and the place for RPGs (and that game's ambition was only able to be contained on CDs, as it was said).
Hence, the N64 selection for RPGs was sparse. I only think of 3 RPGs for the systems without needing to do research. One well received (Paper Mario), one cult status (Ogre Battle 64), and one known more for its infamous status because people played it since they wanted to play an RPG on the N64 but was left disappointed (Quest 64, which you probably knew it as Holy Magic Century since it was called that in Europe).
I know on my part when I got a Playstation in 1999, I went and played those RPGs on the system because the N64 didn't cover that genre all that much while the Playstation cornered that market (and coming from someone who had an N64 first before getting a Playstation).
yeah it kinda allowed indie developers to afford to make console games before being an indie developer was a thing really. so many games from small studios on playstation which couldn't happen on n64
=D i really enjoy the pokemon Mystery Dungeons which looks the same and works the same but it looks stunning for n64 this title

As a huge fan of the Siren the Wanderer Series, I would like to say you've summed up the story quite well. I was turned off by the town building mechanic in this game so I haven't played through the entire game, however from watching playthroughs of this game there's sadly not much content beside unlocking more dungeons. The story does build up a bit the more you explore dungeons and help rebuild the town, but for the most part the storyline is very cut and dry.
I will go out of my way and say there is a section of the game where you see these weird aliens at a beach which speak Engrish. Here's a link if you're interested... It shouldn't really contain spoilers.

the wii should of had a lot more of these types of games transleted and should of had more overall cause the vc was a joke and could have been wiis strongest point........

+John Violet It's by the same people, so they're just using their established blueprint. Their first Mystery Dungeon game was back in 93, and even that was based on the 1980 game Rogue.
Released in the wrong console (Nintendo 64 sold worse than Sega Saturn in Japan) and never re-released or remade.
Or you can stop hoping and think of the actual alternative of learning japanese such as I did? You only deprive yourself for not taking initiative or else It would be more important to you. Just saying.
Learning Japanese isn’t really useful or necessary in my day to day life so time spent learning it to any basic conversational level would be pretty much pointless.
