    Playing this game with four players was (and still is) a blast. Very insane. Also, it may not be very long but to open up all secret cars (taco included) takes time and dedication, and yes they're worth it especially to play with friends.

    I used to play this game for hours and hours with my tv hooked to a stereo just to listen and sing along to the soundtrack! Grindstone, that's the name of the band. I didn't mind the heavy compression back then, the soundtrack was killer! I remember finding online a good quality CD rip, I even tried to buy a CD, but it wasn't possible to do it from my country back then. Those songs hit me hard, good memories!

    N64 actually got a good sim racer with World Driver Championship developed by Boss Game Studio (they guys behind the first Top Gear Rally).
    As for Overdrive it has amazing graphics but I find the gameplay to be unrefined and shallow, basically all it offers is the adrenaline of speed.
    I much preferred Top Gear Rally which it's the best rally game on N64 IMO.

      I firmly believe that World Driver Championship is undeniable PROOF that Gran Tourismo could have been pulled off on the 64...(of course with cutt content)... The driving system is very nice to learn and master. Its also great graphically. Maybe our glenn will adress this in the future review.

    This is one of my favourite arcade racers of all time. If only Snowblind had the financial backing of a big publisher - they would've delivered without question THE best arcade racing game of the generation. The high resolution mode combined with vast draw distances, zero pop up and awe inspiring track designs through massive canyons, swamps and mountain were impossible on rival platforms which suffered from heavy pop up. This game is one of many on the N64 that look fantastic running directly through s video straight to my Pioneer KRP600 60" plasma.

      Actually, this title almost proved that the N64 home consoles were capable of handling GTA I , London 1969/1961 and II style video games; as to why Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive never released the aforementioned titles on the N64, or even the NGC is anyone's guess. It is a shame, because I would have loved playing the old school, top-down GTA's on the NGC or even the cartridge based N64 home consoles.

    I feel the car upgrading is underrated in this game. I felt it was pretty strategic - do I keep my lower grade car but with it's close to maxed out stats? Do I max them out? or do I sell it and leap to the vanilla version of a better car? The issue is the AI slowly starts to upgrade their cars creating "ace" drivers you either have to compete with technology-wise or perhaps lose out on your championship.

    I hated this game when a friend rented it because the cars explode the moment you look at the scenery. But on a recent playthrough, I enjoyed it. The controls and handling are great, I like the tracks. However, it sucks that the game forces you to use a specific car to win races at the beginning and that without turbo boosts, you're not going to win racers. The music is passable - it would be good if you could turn off the vocals. Nonetheless, the game has an addictive quality to it and is something I want to go back to to play some more. Like you said, Glenn, it's one of the better racers on the N64, but not one of the top tier titles.

    I think that perhaps the idea to use the cash pick-ups came from Top Gear 2 on Super Nintendo and the idea for the Nitro pick-ups could be a similar nod to Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 on the Amiga (in the later stages), seeing how the Top Gear game series is actually a spiritual successor to the Lotus Turbo Challenge games on the Amiga. Heck, in the original Top Gear (SNES), the soundtrack was largely composed of remixes of Lotus 1 & 2 songs, and in Top Gear Rally on N64 they got the person who composed the music for Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, and you can even hear samples from that game being used in the soundtrack at times.

      ah man your taking me way back to my younger days with lotus on amiga talk! man id really like to get an amiga again...cant believe people are still modding them and keeping them alive!

    • @lunamorley
      @lunamorley 10 лет назад

      ***** Yeah, I'm very happy to have an Amiga, especially since I'm a silly American (I imported a PAL machine so I could play more of the games). It's actually my favorite gaming device, and I'm currently working on a game that pays homage to the system. I'm especially a big fan of the Turrican series, and it's funny that Factor 5 was actually planning to make a Nintendo 64 entry in the series, but ultimately cancelled it. To be more specific, they put it on hold, focused on Rogue Squadron, which I can't blame them for doing seeing how that's my favorite game, changed the name from Turrican 64 to Thornado due to copyright issues, moved it to the GameCube, used some of the assets in Rogue Squadron III and then cancelled it. You can find screenshots and concept art of the N64 version online as well as a music demo from Chris Huelsbeck designed for the N64 but is often mistaken for GameCube music, and this game was probably the reason as to why Factor 5 made the vast terrain engine that would be used in Rogue Squadron. By the way, I subscribed. I find your videos to be very entertaining and informative. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest N64 fan (I like it, but I don't adore it to the same extent I do some other machines), but by watching some of your videos, I'm already finding games that I want to try out. You evidently know more about the system than I do. XD

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  10 лет назад +1

      quite smoothly but if your wanting to play it very well then you need the expansion pack, in multiplayer without it the detail is a little low and it makes seeing turns etc hard unless you know the tracks well. with the pack it rarely drops a beat even with 4 players in the championship mode.

    I think the game was mostly graphically focused on instead of playability. As you can see, the game has stunningly solid frame rates and wonderfully designed graphics and other visual features, however it's lacking deeply in design and playability. It's a transcendent above other racers and it clearly is N64's most beautiful racer for it's time.

Top Gear Rally, as you said has the floaty and (depending on your steering wheel setting) very twitchy handling, Top Gear Rally 2 was just a bit meh but this was definitely the best of the 3. Worst part for me? The tunnel shortcut with the wooden uprights in the middle...hit those and you stop but even if you just gently clip the ones around the edges Boom! your dead. I've just recently given this one a real shot, and it's good fun. However, having recently spent 20 hours on Stunt Racer 64, there's one thing that's bothering me: Overdrive gives me the option to upgrade the cars, but if I switch to a different one, all those upgrades disappear. WHY?

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  5 лет назад

      Because the upgrades are unique to that car

    • @Sonicisbadazz
      @Sonicisbadazz 5 лет назад +1

      @@n64glennplant okay. Just realized I misspoke. I don't mean that I change to another car and the upgrades don't transfer between them; I mean that if I change to another car, then change back to the one I originally upgraded, it no longer has the upgrades. When compared with Stunt Racer where upgrades are permanent, it's a nuisance. Though switching cars DOES seem to refund some of the money in Overdrive.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  5 лет назад

      I think that they did that to make people really think about changing cars ie is it better to push on with current or buy a new one and start over but with a slightly higher base stat machine which could be specced out higher than their current one

    Well, I guess the 640x240 was to make the performance stay well, as also another thing that I liked is that despite it makes the screen view a bit smaller, it had a Half-Hi Res mode that you could use to give it a higher resolution WITHOUT a Expansion Pak (I didn't have the luck of have one, and TGO is the only game compatible with EP that I currently have that works, I have Stadium 2 but no longer works), and I guess it uses either that resolution too (but without screen adjusting), or something just a little bit lower than that.

    I quite remind this game. Actually it was one of the last titles i hear about what was released here in Portugal before the N64 disappear in the shadow and the beginning of the release of the Gamecube as well. The N64 didn't have a good impact to be honest. In over the past last years, i think this game make a good feedback even to the graphics limitations.

    I like the visual style, its colorful and somewhat cell shaded, I think the one that people remember the most is automolista, but this would work well visually for the younger audience, Im all for the cartoon style for n64...its hard to buy games for kids...ds is great, but I was somewhat disappointed with the wii u....thats hard for me to say, since im big on nintendo.

Keep up the amazing job on the reviews!!

    i love that box art. it would be sweet airbrushed on a n64. I might pick this up ,looks fun. would be better as a combat racer i think.

    This was my favorite racing game on the N64. I liked the grunge songs so much that I decided to plug my console on my father's stereo one day and end up being very disappointed by the muffled sound. Still a killer game imo.

    In your opinion what IS the best racer on the N64 Glenn?

  • @natef15
    @natef15 3 года назад

    I bought this recently and was trying it out tonight. I don't think the developers wanted you to select manual transmission... absolutely the worse implementation I've ever seen! Only one button can be assigned "shift" so you end up only being able to upshift. There must be some nuance I'm missing? I was impressed by the graphics though.

    How does TGO stack up with Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart 64?

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  10 лет назад

      hmm hard to say as they are totally different games. as TGO is an arcade racer and MK64 and DKR are cart racers they are hard to compare but id say in terms of arcade racers on the n64 this is one of the best
