I can confirm that the track editor was insanely cool as a kid. I would make giant jumps followed by hairpin turns that loop back around, allowing you to jump straight to the later part of the course. Better yet, the other riders didn't have good enough AI to recognize the shortcuts, so my 6 year old brain could enjoying winning over and over
I built a lot of courses but I remember one where I made the game glitch. This map I made included a turn followed by lots of sharp W jumps. All of the AI racers have a sort of "path" they will follow during any race or map you make. In this particular course, the AI racer "Vicky Vickers" (I think) would make the turn as any other racer, would then take the jump and land on another one of the bumps. However, every single time she would land in this sharp face of the hill and then she would get shot up vertically into space. If I continued racing, by the next lap I would see her body and motorcycle land somewhere close to where she met her demise.
I remember I built many tracks but they took controller pack space, there were other games that also saved on this controller pack and made me furious I could only hold 1 track
Underrated game! This was all about learning how to handle the bike physics (you had a lot of control), once you got a good grip on this, the difficulty became trivial. Powersliding into corners is something I see missing here, that helps a lot. Great vid!
As someone who spent hundreds of hours playing the original on NES , especially on the 31 in 1 , I cannot believe I was somehow not aware of the N64 edition.
EB64 felt like a hidden gem at the time. The controls are tight and unique, similarly to what made Wave Race so special. The bike's steering and suspension felt well-tuned, elevating it above many other N64 racers.
Those tracks on the Platinum cup look real cool. I never actually unlocked them as a kid. I always played Sarah Hills, and the announcer excitedly exclaiming that she 'wiped out' or 'ate dirt' are forever scarred on my psyche.
This was one of my favorite N64 games when it came out and I easily put close to like 100 hours on it. I defended it passionately to the degree I remember one Game Informer writer out of three giving it a mediocre score and I e-mailed him to tell him his opinion was dumb…and he responded telling me to shut up. Ah to be 13 again. Anyway I’m glad you liked this one, I want to play it again one day and relive it.
the tricks special track was my favorite part lol. the announcer would get all excited if you did a move called the KOBE. He would yell HE PULLED A KOBE! and it was the most points i think.
Having played two other ones later for this series, yeah this one handles so well in comparison. It's very hard to get used to, but it feels great once you're pretty good at it
@@Thabeast721 I haven't thought about Supercross 2000 since that horrific day I rented it over 20 years ago. I can only remember how terrible it was when compared to this game. Jeremy McGrath deserved so much better.
I’ve been so hyped for this playthrough. I spent many long nights packin dips and twistin grips in excitebike 64 when it came out. I’m 30 now and I swear to god the announcer yelling “Tricky Ricky Stern!!!” Still randomly pops in my head a couple times a year.
This was one of my favorite games, played it so much with my dad as a kid. It's really cool that you're doing this series because you get to discover some real gems, the N64 is definitely a system full of them. Also, the Excitebike Soccer wasn't my idea, but you can bet when I saw Rocket League get big, I wasn't at all surprised because I remembered Excitebike Soccer being so fun, and it seemed like it had a lot of the same energy.
This game is real gem on N64, especially for racers. Lots of challenge and replay-ability in the single player and time trials. Also the multiplayer was great too and the track editor! Just a really fun game that had ALOT of content to it, especially for the year 2000
TRICKY RICKY STERN! Get's a soil sample! The announcer made this game legit. I cringed a little when you said you can clip other bikes by riding into their back tire. It's actually the inverse, but it's all good.
was looking for this comment, I've watched a couple of his video's now. He is quite slow to pick up on techniques and seems to miss obvious thing a lot lol
You just unlocked a memory. I'm obsessed with rocket league for 2 years now and always thought it was a demolition derby soccer game I used to play a lot with my friend back in the day, but it was excite bike 64
The berms allow you to take the turns at a higher speed because it's elevated in a way to help with the centrifugal force you experience taking a turn. If you notice on every interstate or highway they have these same berms, but at a much more gradual elevation
100% you should do a tier list of all the games from s to f when you finish would be a great finale episode for the series and love the content man keep going
Isn't he rating them all for enjoyability and difficulty? I'm sure the interested viewer can sort a list of numbers. Haha. That said, would be cool for thab to give his top 5 or 10 games when all is said and done.
I played it too. I remember liking the chibi fighters more than the adult ones. I think you got random drops to improve the fighters. It was fun from what I recall.

Another Friday, another N64 game. Love the series Thab! Edit: This game looks surprisingly cool. Unsurprisingly, it's reminding me of Excite Truck for the Wii.
Two things: First, a general advice for racing games. When taking a turn, the outside edge is slower and easier to make, while the inside edge is faster and more difficult to make. This is because you can start turning earlier, having a greater effect on the overall turn than the increased distance moving from the inside edge to the outside edge. This is the opposite of what you said as a common-sense fact at one point. Naturally, sliding or drifting mechanics in a game can complicate this relationship. Second, it was hilarious how every time you mentioned how slippery the game feels to control, the camera shows you making an impossibly tight turn and accidentally moving at a right angle to the track. That level of irony in editing is why I like this series.
I had never heard of that one. I did play the original when i was a youngster, though - it's cool that they included the emulated NES version. I wonder why this didn't get much attention back in the day?

Hey Thab, sorry to be this guy, especially if someone else pointed it out, but the rise of dirt along the edge of the track in turns are called 'berms'. I only do it to make sure you aren't passing along inaccurate information or potentially sounding like a moron in casual conversation with dirt bike enthusiasts! 😄 But seriously, I'm so glad you're doing this challenge and putting so much into it for RUclips! That's the only way I can see your content. Watching full VODs on Twitch is not the same as watching live; hence the appreciation for edited and scripted N64 content! Thanks dude
Damn, you didn't try the crazy Downhill mode. Also, you can knock off every racer by hitting their front wheel with your back wheel, just like in the old classic. There's nothing random about it. And finally, pushing down/left and down/right to steer your bike with butter smooth handling in sharp turns is something I was used to from Wave Race 64. All in all I love this game as one of the very best racers on the N64 with the big bonus of having so much fun and varied extra content. 10/10

I'm so glad you figured out the turbo trick with Nigel (or Bobby) lol, I always had turbo going whenever the wheels are touching ground B) Also I can't believe you beat Hill Climb so quick! That shit was hard af! The whole game was pretty tough, but it felt really good once you had all the techniques down. It's a good game, & I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Berms allow you to go faster around a corner because they redirect some of the lateral g-force into the ground, thereby enhancing traction and enabling you to maintain higher speeds without skidding.
This is part of the n64 starter pack along with goldeneye, Mario kart, shadows of the empire, wave race and 1080. At least in my neighborhood. Obviously there were many more great games (still waiting for you to pull ocarina). The n64 was such a great system.

oh boy I played the hell out of this game as a kid, mastered even, track editor was cool af, stunt course lets you see all the cool tricks, that was one of the few games I played without the stick, but with the D-pad instead, Z and L both worked as the turbo button, so it was more confy than the stick iIMO. also a little trick is to "do a wheelie" at the very tip of any ramp, basically pressing turbo and "down" at the same time at the very edge of any type of ramp, this will create a mini turbo that will make you jump farther. after learning the basic layout of each course, every jump you will preemptively turn the bike in the air for the next turn, it was cool man just believe me being a kid and having to wait for christmas or birthday for a new game made me appreciate this game, cool video brought up nostalgia memories
this is one of my favorite games ever. I think Tricky Ricky Stern was the best char, but I don't remember why. On big jumps you want to pull back on the stick as much as possible, you go much further. That's the only way to make the canyon jump. The R button lets you slide which helps a lot with the sharper corners. You also want to stay as close to the red as possible throughout the race. If your front tire touches another player's back tire, you will crash 100% of the time.
It's really unfortunate that even after playing this many N64 games, Thab still doesn't really understand racing games. No, they don't make you play the races again on each difficulty just to pad out the game, but because that's how racing works. A racing game has a limited number of courses that the player is expected to play over and over and over as they try to get better at the game, exactly like how in real racing drivers drive on the same tracks over and over and over as they try to become better race drivers. Do you think someone would be like "well, I've raced on Daytona once, time to retire!" No. Now, I get wanting more content in a game, and want a good number of tracks in a racing game for sure, but this one has a lot of it so that isn't an issue here. This isn't one of those games with two or three tracks, it has a whole lot of them. Anyway, other than that it's always impressive to see how good Thab is at games, he made this very difficult game look much easier than it is. Getting through the Hill Climb that quickly is particularly impressive.
I didn't know this game had soccer too. I used to play it on Monster Truck Madness 64 and, when Rocket League blew up, I was adamant they ripped it off THAT game.
It looks like unlike most racing games, this one doesn't basically decide who the best CPU is going to be from the beginning, so it's a lot easier to win the circuits.
I can confirm that the track editor was insanely cool as a kid. I would make giant jumps followed by hairpin turns that loop back around, allowing you to jump straight to the later part of the course. I take it that, for speed, you want to be in the air as *little* as possible, only jumping far enough to land on the downward slope of the next hill.
The excite bike track editor may be primitive but track editors are genuinely rare in racing games. Very uncommon
everybody gangsta til thab say i am beating every n64 game and i mean all of em
The greatest undertaking since the hoover dam continues. Did you know Excitebike came out in 1984 for the Famicom?!

also a little trick is to "do a wheelie" at the very tip of any ramp, basically pressing turbo and "down" at the same time at the very edge of any type of ramp, this will create a mini turbo that will make you jump farther.
after learning the basic layout of each course, every jump you will preemptively turn the bike in the air for the next turn, it was cool man just believe me

Speed boost man. Down than up when you hit a jump
6:00 ohhhh listen *turns up volume* cuts right to an ad blasting my ears off
this is one of my favorite games ever.
I think you have to press forward first as you're going up a ramp, and then back when you jump. Simulates preloading the suspension.
One of my favorite games and first one that I ever unblocked everything. I can still hear "C-C-C-CORDOVA!!"
Distance also had a soccer mode, and it was pretty fun. They removed it when it became clear that Rocket League had conquered that genre mashup.
I can’t wait for Road Rash. Thanks for doing this man. Cheers
Hill climb strat. Riding the edge is very sketchy, but the bumps/jumps aren't as bad allowing you to more easily maintain a consistent speed.
