Hahahaha he did the "and then something amazing happened" and it faded to black and I was like, wow, this feels like Summoning Sa....then the music started and I died. Perfection.
It reminds me of the original Sonic the Hedgehog games on the Sega Genesis. The more you play, the faster you get. The faster you get, the more fun you have. Definitely saw the same feel in wipeout.
Fun fact I just learned: WipEout 64 has much higher quality audio than most other N64 games because instead of keeping full lengths songs on the cartridge, it has loops and pieces of songs and data telling the game which order to play them in. This saves space on the cartridge, allowing for higher quality audio and textures.
Textures were not a problem for cart space on N64, thats a common myth.......one N64 texture is 4KB in size so 100 unique textures are 410KB.......thats less than HALF a MegaByte......Goldeneye has excellent and varied textures and the cart size is 12MB
The symbols in this game are actually quite logical when you consider the power up they represent. I think the Designers Republic did a fantastic job and really gave the Wipeout series a unique finish which was way ahead of its time. I played the shit out of this game when it came out; I was about 13 and visually it had a big effect on me, not to mention the fantastic music which was a world away from the dreadful UK pop charts. It's a shame that the studio behind the games is gone; there have been several imitations in the years since but nothing comes close to the alchemy of Psygnosis and the DR. It was fun while it lasted!
Heyo, a mostly silent viewer here! I'm glad for this series to learn more about what the N64 had to offer and which overlooked games might deserve a closer look. Despite apparently quite a few Wipeout fans showing up, I'm surprised they didn't give you more details about the game / series. Since there sadly doesn't seem to be a Grand Prix mode, I would have taken a look at some Single Races for the very least, since I feel like you have missed some stuff since the Challenges don't give you any choices. I don't think it would really affect the score much - I mean, if you can take about an hour for just one challenge each and still rate it a 9/10, that's the sign of a good game. But if you were to revisit it (or want to check out the series in general), here's some details I noticed that you didn't seem to realize plus some tidbits I found interesting. I'm no expert, having grown up with Nintendo as well and only played some of the later Wipeout games, but here we go: While there are different ships with different stats, in most cases when something seems faster, it's because it is actually a different speed class, like Mario Kart's various ccm. Additionally, since faster speeds would make the lap times shorter, the game somewhat balances it out with different lap numbers. Events with the slowest speed classes, Vector and Venom, have 3 laps. The faster Rapier events have 4 laps, while the very fast Phantom class (which you seemed to confuse with the ship) has 5 laps. You probably missed out on both of these since the challenges are fixed, not allowing you to change anything, including ship and speed class. Wipeout 64 was - like a lot of other racing games on the system - actually not competing with F-Zero X. It was released soon after F-Zero X and actually had two installments before Nintendo's AG racer jumped to 3D, the first one being released about 3 years before that. If I picked it up correctly, Wipeout 64 was originally going to be a port of the second game for N64 (both of the first games were multi-platform), but they quickly noticed it wouldn't work out, turning it basically into a "Wipeout 2.5". All the tracks in the game are actually mirrored, sometimes shortened and received a new paintjob with some new / different features on top of it. Even without Wipeout 64, the series would have 8 games, the last one being a launch title for the PS Vita back in 2012. It not only has more games than F-Zero, but also all of them are 3D, while F-Zero has mostly kept to Mode 7 style for its SNES and GBA games. The other Wipeout games actually got music from accomplished artists that were popular in the 90's clubbing scene, often D'n'B, like CoLD SToRAGE, Kraftwerk, Orbital and many more. While Psygnosis was already owned by Sony at that time, they were generous enough to allow them to make multi-platform games and even make this semi-port, which could technically be seen as the only Wipeout game not released for a Sony platform and also the last game playable on a non-Sony platform. The next game was exclusive for PS1 and Psygnosis got renamed into Liverpool Studios, signifying that they had become a full-fledged second-party developer for Sony. I could imagine that Sony saw Wipeout as their counterpart to Nintendo's F-Zero. Psygnosis was already an accomplished studio for more than a decade. I was surprised when I found out they were responsible for the Lemmings!
It's really interesting to watch you discover this game for the 1st time in 2022. I was in the peak of my gaming hobby back when Wipeout 1, 2, 3, and 64 were released, and I put hundreds of hours into all 4 of these iconic 90s racers. In my opinion, this is the golden era of Wipeout. Wipeout 64 was the fastest of the 4 and sort of felt like a sequel to Wipeout XL with similar menus, ships, weapons, and overall graphical design. Love these games forever. Thanks for playing it, learning it, and respecting it.
If I got that correctly, Wipeout 64 was originally supposed to be a port of Wipeout XL, but when they realized it wouldn't work out due to the different specs, they made somewhat a new game out of it. All the tracks are actually mirrored (and sometimes additionally shortened) versions from the previous two games. Add some new and unique content and that's how this became more like a game of its own.
@@lozofspielereien8038 Woah that's cool. I actually never realized 64's tracks were mirrored and edited versions of tracks from Wipeout 1 and XL. I just read all about it in wiki. Crazy fun fact. Apparently some elevations and some corners were changed. I'm gonna go back to 64 and try to figure out the origin of each track. Thanks!
@@gamernaut8864 You're welcome! I might be more familiar with the recent games (especially since I was more of a Nintendo kid, like I'd also assume about our reviewer guy here), but since I enjoyed the games, I got invested enough to check out all the other games in some way or another. I probably also learned about those mirrored tracks from the wiki, which I looked at to try and get a better overview / comparison of the tracks than you could in the games themselves. Since the wiki also has suggestions for which track mirrors which and I could kinda see the resemblance, I trusted their assumptions. Sadly, I don't know if minimaps for the 64 game exist, unlike for the other ones. But I'd assume it's interesting to find out what they have changed and what could be the reason for it (e.g. keeping the map smaller). I find it interesting that Wipeout 64 still has the largest grid size of the PS1 era. Of course it's no F-Zero X with its 30 racers, but that's why that game had to resort to much more simplistic graphics.
I dont know, if he liked this one that much, i could see fzero x getting full marks.. either way super glad he liked this one, i feel like these futuristic arcade racers aged really well
Yeah, F Zero X is a better game. Also, as fun as it was, if Wipeout 64 gets higher scores than Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye/Perfect Dark or a few other world class classics, I'll be very disappointed in his scoring system! There's no way on Earth Wipeout 64 is in any way better than those.
@@DM-kv9kj idk this game has aged meaningfully better than goldeneye, and a lot of that game's appeal is tied up in multiplayer, which he won't be playing. prepare to be disappointed imo
I remember when I was a kid playing this game. I've never beaten the wall challenge with any medal better than silver. Beaten all the gold medals except for this one. Seeing you finally beating this monstrous of a challenge made my inner kid SO PROUD! You're my childhood hero, pal.
Man, what a great episode! The memories, the finish, the SummoningSalt.. I really enjoyed this and it brought back so many memories for "Wipeout" on Playstation1 back then... We played that so so much to perfection. I also think it played a big role in me becoming a DJ, cause of the music. Such great songs and artists on there. Thanks THAB!
This was my favorite episode so far. Kudos and props to you for doubling down and grinding out that insane challenge. This makes me want to watch the stream now to not miss these awesome moments.
This game and the original Playtation version are both so good. They are hard as hell, but they are so satisfying when you do a clean run. I don't play many racing games that make me yell in celebration when I win a race, but Wipeout is one of them.
Great to finally see another good racing game! Seeing you play through a bunch of bland racers before this helps me to appreciate the good ones on a whole new level.
Definitely my favorite review so far but Hol' up you got the ships names wrong, they go by Team: Feisar (blue/yellow, slow speed, great handling & shield) AG Systems (white/red, great speed, good handling, trash shield) Qirex RD (purple, good speed, trash handling, great shield) Auricom (red/blue, avg everything) Piranha II (gold/crimson, great everything) And the speed classes from slow to fast: Vector, Venom, Rapier, Phantom Fugg super combo challenge 5 for real though
Was watching this while lying down for a nap, dozed off and woke up minutes later to "Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!" It was so confusing and terrifying for a few seconds.
This was sweet. I played this way years later. I was expecting a jetski game. This game has good 'flow' moments. And now I've written enough to not spoil my real comment: Blitz 2000 in the Arcade was phenomenal. I *think* I remember the 64 version being great. I'm really excited to see how rose tinted my glasses were.
I don't know a single harder task on the N64 than getting a gold on super combo challenge 5. I did it for the second time earlier this year and even having beaten it once it just does not get any easier. Congrats on this one, I was waiting to see if you'd clear it 100%!
the original wipeout on ps1 was one of my favorite games ever. it was so ridiculously fast, intense, and satisfying. there were a bunch of sequels but for whatever reason none of them ever quite matched up to the original for me.
The way you came to a dead stop when touching the wall was a deal breaker for me. My personal favourite is Wipeout 3 SE, though can see why 2097 is most peoples
It felt so strange listening to the commentary for this as someone who's known the series for a good number of years before this point. Hearing the various speed classes being called the ships themselves was... odd, to say the least. That and the comment about the Shield Raider (AG-S Super) being useless when it was actually the most broken weapon in W64 (it instantly leaves its target at 1% Shield and restores some of your Shield, meaning you can just lightly poke them and they explode).
This game had a big impact on my music taste. Risotto by Fluke is a top 10 album for me and I probably would have never heard of it without having this game as a kid.
I like the dramatic pop-in rather than the thick fog of Extreme-G. I have the playstation version's soundtrack to thank for my love of electronic music.
The boosted start makes perfect sense in this game, perhaps better than any other game I've seen. It's exactly how you would rev up a car with a manual you were drag racing. You have to launch with the highest rpm you can manage without burning out.
This is one of my most played N64 -games. Playcontrol is just so freaking amazing on this version of the game, that i never get enough of this game. On Phantom (fastest craft Piranha II) gets turbo start by clicking "A" completedly down immediately after you hear three. Note: Autopilot is not completedly Auto, you can select where to turn, if you want on energy -zone or not, for instance. Quake -weapon was removed on PS2. Lol!
As a huge WipEout fan, massive respect for sticking with this game and learning to handle the craft well! One small note, Vector, Venom, Rapier, and Phantom are the racing speed classes, not the names of the ships themselves. (No worries!) The teams/ships are FEISAR, AG-Systems, Auricom, Qirex, and the hidden ship is the Piranha 2! (There's a TON of lore behind the teams and the world of the WipEout universe. It's interesting stuff!) Again, great video, and massive respect! :D Oh, and Combo Challenge 5 really is evil! I never thought to beat it like that, and I can't believe you made it to the finish line! If you're a fan of the oldschool WipEout games, check out Ballistic NG on Steam. It's a huge love letter to WipEout, with full workshop support for custom ships, tracks, sounds, etc!
For anyone watching this that owns a PS4 or PS5, Wipeout HD/Fury is good as well. That and Gran Turismo were the best 3D games when I still had my old setup. Looked like your ship was floating right in front of you.
Played this game with my little brother when we were kids, but we never even came close to golding anything. Didn’t even try any orher challenges! Awesome game!
The summoning salt music i literally lost it laughing lol because i was already feeling like i was watching a summonsalt video at that point. Chefs kiss 10/10 😂
We can all agree the summoning salt reference was a major but small piece of why we all keep coming back. This series even though we’re like 50 games behind is golden.
I also loved Star Wars episode 1 podracer. It was among my fav racing games on N64 along with the Extreme Gs. Both 1 and 2 were amazing and fun. The secrets for them, where you enter your name as a certain thing, would unlock some really fun gimmicks
I'm not sure if it's still the case in Blitz 2000, but in Blitz you can throw immediately during a hurdle action instead of waiting for the QB to load up on long throws. My sister and I figured that out during our intense battles
Not having heard of wipeout. Someone didn't have a ps, feels bad man. The feel of speeding through the tracks with music blasting in the background, great.
This was my first game when I got a Nintendo 64 from my dad. I was not into racing games at all, but this game kept me on my feet for hours! That challenge of course did a number on me too, but the satisfying ending was worth it. I think putting ridiculous challenges like those truly push our limits and persistence in video games, which is something we aspire when we find a new game. And I thought the racing was pretty cool. In the end, I exchanged this game for Diddy Kong Racing and I never saw it again. Nonetheless, I was proud to complete it.
Oh lol it turns out I had watched a summoning salt video. I’ve been watching speedruns of Punch Out lately and he has the world record. Weird coincidence. Also I just watched his castlevania video and it’s really well done.
speaking of boost starts, you'll run into HydroThunder somewhere on your list. the boost start is by no means needed to place 1st on any tracks, but is one of the most bizarre boost starts in any racing game.
30:20 the guy in first died because of the well timed hit on your turn. Probably lowered his HP and railed him off course. Truly an insane moment in gaming
It is weird that the hardest challenge still has two more after it. I could even see it as challenge six and then the unlocked seventh one is easier, but being where it’s at does led credence to the idea that it was unintentionally made that difficult. Maybe when it was tested someone got ridiculously lucky so their time to complete fell in line with the rest of the levels (though you’d think having to kill eight racers would seem ridiculous in general). Either way, great work Thab!
This game was a pretty well known raver when I was a kid in The UK. It was a game everyone with a PlayStation seemed to own but it wasn't a game everyone talked about, it was just quietly respected. It was a really gratifying game to master cause cornering and crushing it was hard to do. I forgot there was a 64 version so great to see. I wonder whether music was different on each version 🤔 to Google I go
Seems like you really enjoyed this one! You know what's really fun? The Wipeout Omega Collection but playing it in Playstation VR. Going break-neck speeds and flying off of high jumps in VR is friggin crazy and amazing. Give it a try if you ever get the chance.
The hype on my face when the Summoning Salt theme hits…can’t even describe it. I’m gonna play that theme at my wedding and my future-spouse will have NO clue why.
Played the crap out of the wipeout for PSP and PS3. Very solid games, and some of my favorite racers. One note, in those you could use your airbrake to spin around and send the opponents flying. Are you not able to do that in this one?
Ironically, Wipeout (and Wipeout XL which this is based off) was one of the reasons I finally gave up on my N64 and bought a Playstation back in the day. Nothing beats the real CD audio soundtrack that was on the disc.
Wipeout was a huge success on Playstation and one of the most popular games at the time, to the point where it had a cultural impact. It was praised by any publication, ported on almost every system and spawned many sequels through many generations. How is it possible you "never heard of it"?
Hey if you liked this, a quick guide to the WipEout games to experience Do not get WipEout 1995. It was a janky launch title Do get WipEout 2097/XL. It’s basically the same game that you played but with different tracks and better draw distance Do get WipEout 3 or WipEout 3 Special Edition. A damn fun game that took everything that made 2097/XL great and gave it the power of the sun. It adds three new teams to choose from. The Special Edition also includes remastered versions of tracks from 1995 and 2097/XL, but is rare, and only available in PAL. If you don’t know how PS1 region locking works, it basically means it won’t play on a North American PlayStation unless you have a backwards compatible PS3. If you want the special edition you may have to resort to less than legal methods, but the normal version is still very good Decide for yourself: WipEout Fusion. A lot of people didn’t like it because it was a departure from the series, and the physics were changed as the ships were now canonically magnetized to the track. It also heavily prioritized come at and had question ship designs. Also don’t play on a PS2 Slim: there’s a soft lock that prevents you from completing the game Do get WipEout Pure. Pretty damn good, was great whenever forget it brought it on vacation with me. An improvement on physics as well from Fusion. Decide for yourself: WipEout Pulse. It’s a good game but I think they botched the difficulty just a tad. It’s too hard from the get go Do get WipEout HD: this basically fixes the issues that Pulse had and gives it a huge graphical upgrade. Ask someone else: WipEout 2048. I have yet to play it. Do get WipEout Omega Collection. It’s a remaster that combines the content of Pulse, HD, and 2048, and also a hell of a lot easier to find an online match on. Do not get WipEout Rush. Yep, they made a mobile game. Fml

This game takes me back. I got this, Assault Rigs and Twisted Metal 2 as part of the boot package with my family’s first PC.
We just witnessed one of the highest scoring games on the list ever. History has taken place.
the original wipeout on ps1 was one of my favorite games ever. it was so ridiculously fast, intense, and satisfying. there were a bunch of sequels but for whatever reason none of them ever quite matched up to the original for me.
Whoops
dude that last challenge was hype. The break down of the win was also great.
This game had a big impact on my music taste. Risotto by Fluke is a top 10 album for me and I probably would have never heard of it without having this game as a kid.
i can't wait till you play F Zero X and XG2.
those were the 2 "futuristic style type" racing games i loved on the N64 when i was a kid
This is my favorite video of the N64 Challenge so far. I loved the summoning salt part so much also! Great job Thab!
The song ‘bang on’ by The Propeller Heads is such a banger!
I like the dramatic pop-in rather than the thick fog of Extreme-G. I have the playstation version's soundtrack to thank for my love of electronic music.
Always thought this was a jet ski game based on what I remember seeing in the video store as a kid. Great video, fantastic content, thank you so much.
This was one of your best episodes IMHO. Super good all around 👍
The boosted start makes perfect sense in this game, perhaps better than any other game I've seen. It's exactly how you would rev up a car with a manual you were drag racing. You have to launch with the highest rpm you can manage without burning out.
Dude I had completely forgotten about this game. You unlocked a core childhood memory of mine. This game was super sick
(No worries!)
The teams/ships are FEISAR, AG-Systems, Auricom, Qirex, and the hidden ship is the Piranha 2!
(There's a TON of lore behind the teams and the world of the WipEout universe. It's interesting stuff!)
Again, great video, and massive respect! :D
Oh, and Combo Challenge 5 really is evil! I never thought to beat it like that, and I can't believe you made it to the finish line!
If you're a fan of the oldschool WipEout games, check out Ballistic NG on Steam. It's a huge love letter to WipEout, with full workshop support for custom ships, tracks, sounds, etc!
that game actually looks pretty damn satisfying when it goes right
This series rocks, currently my favorite thing happening as far as streamers go.
Look forward to every Friday just for these videos. Best of luck with your channel going forward.
For anyone watching this that owns a PS4 or PS5, Wipeout HD/Fury is good as well. That and Gran Turismo were the best 3D games when I still had my old setup. Looked like your ship was floating right in front of you.
I hope we get another Wipeout game someday.
love this series, Thx Thab
29:51 perhaps the most dramatic moment of this series yet. Emotional catharsis not seen since the Cubs won the World Series.
Dude the summoning salt call-out and then the W! Amazing video dude. Been loving this series
Wow !! You went for 100% on this ! Hats off to you ! :D That Summoning Salt reference was amazing xD
I would love to see you play the other Wipeout games
Played this game with my little brother when we were kids, but we never even came close to golding anything. Didn’t even try any orher challenges! Awesome game!
The summoning salt music i literally lost it laughing lol because i was already feeling like i was watching a summonsalt video at that point. Chefs kiss 10/10 😂
We can all agree the summoning salt reference was a major but small piece of why we all keep coming back. This series even though we’re like 50 games behind is golden.
Best series on RUclips right here. Love it!
This game is staple in the industry
love this game, solid music and a real feeling of speed. great video!
Keep it up man, I've watched all the games you've played on N64 so far and your commentary is great. can't wait to see all the N64 games!!!!
ALL OF THEM!
I was at that stream when that moment happened.
It was amazing.
what an odd coincidence, over here playing some wipeout omega collection, and see thab uploaded Wipeout 64.
I also loved Star Wars episode 1 podracer. It was among my fav racing games on N64 along with the Extreme Gs. Both 1 and 2 were amazing and fun. The secrets for them, where you enter your name as a certain thing, would unlock some really fun gimmicks
That’s why I love Mario kart so much. It’s the perfecting aspect that makes it my all time favorite series
I got pumped to see you playing this. I remember liking to rent it back in the day and remember it being quite hard!
It's FRIDAY!!!!! I look forward to all of your videos and shorts, but I really look forward to Friday! In it with you for the long haul
I’m not familiar with summoning salt but I’ll check them out.
Great job with this game.
This game seems like it’s stupid hard. No room for error!
Man honestly, wipeout hd is so great,. You have a mode where you just race by yourself and you speed up every lap.
And there's psychedelic colors in it (Zone Mode). =D
Awesome vid. Great sense of speed in this game. Can’t wait for you to get to F-Zero
I don’t think I would ever 100% this game. That one track sounds like torture.
Yo. Love the Summoning Salt bit. Cracked me up.
Blows my mind the games this man either hasn’t played or at the least heard of haha. But I love his channel anyway
This game was featured in the movie Hackers, which is one of the favorite movies of my childhood.
The hype on my face when the Summoning Salt theme hits…can’t even describe it. I’m gonna play that theme at my wedding and my future-spouse will have NO clue why.
i enjoyed the summoning salt reference
I'm kinda surprised a hardcore gamer has never heard of Wipeout, guess I'm getting old
I love this series so much. I look forward to Friday.
Same I hope i don't die until he finishes every game
Grats! That looked soooo tough. Well done!!!!
Loved this game for the playstation! i had no idea that they released it for the n64. Very cool.
Wipeout was a huge success on Playstation and one of the most popular games at the time, to the point where it had a cultural impact. It was praised by any publication, ported on almost every system and spawned many sequels through many generations. How is it possible you "never heard of it"?
Wipeout at the time was a pretty big deal. To say, many tracks are from well known techno producers of the era such as Propellerheads and Fluke
True dat! It was very much the breaks/big beat sub-genre of electronica too, my fave!
@@Toppercutter Mine too! Still have the CDs of many of them, including Chemical Brothers!
@@francescodibuono6344 Awesome! Another MM2 breaks fan haha!
(it's not techno though 😅)
@@yuotueb i know yeah, a lot of people use the term techno to mean electronic music though, when in reality it's its own sub-genre
29:50 and the crowd goes wild!!!
This was something I played when I was younger on 64, great game.
Hey if you liked this, a quick guide to the WipEout games to experience
Do not get WipEout 1995. It was a janky launch title
Do get WipEout 2097/XL. It’s basically the same game that you played but with different tracks and better draw distance
Do get WipEout 3 or WipEout 3 Special Edition. If you want the special edition you may have to resort to less than legal methods, but the normal version is still very good
Decide for yourself: WipEout Fusion. A lot of people didn’t like it because it was a departure from the series, and the physics were changed as the ships were now canonically magnetized to the track. It also heavily prioritized come at and had question ship designs. Also don’t play on a PS2 Slim: there’s a soft lock that prevents you from completing the game
Do get WipEout Pure. Pretty damn good, was great whenever forget it brought it on vacation with me. An improvement on physics as well from Fusion.
Decide for yourself: WipEout Pulse. It’s a good game but I think they botched the difficulty just a tad. It’s too hard from the get go
Do get WipEout HD: this basically fixes the issues that Pulse had and gives it a huge graphical upgrade.
Fml
"Less than legal methods." That's funny because I'm pretty sure this kid pirated all these N64 games and just put them on an Everdrive.
