  • Top Gear Rally 2 is a racing game for the Nintendo 64. It was released in 1999, and is a sequel to Top Gear Rally. Like the original Rally, a related game was released for the Game Boy Color as Top Gear Pocket 2, then retitled Top Gear Rally 2 for its European release.

    Oooh, I loved this game. I played it for like a straight month : p I had this and Top Gear Rally, I liked both but I defintiely prefered this one. TGR was fun but still felt like a pretty basic N64 racing game. I loved how unique this one was, and I had fun mastering the courses taking as little damage as I could to my car : p
    Id totally recommend this game.

    This game was absolutely amazing! I think I played nearly every racer on the N64 except maybe for the original. Beetle, Diddy, Mario, Overdrive, Ridge Racer 64, Star Wars, and Wave Race and the Snowboarding ones. Honestly, the ones I didn't care for were the likes of Excitebike/F-Zero with absolutely fake looking vehicles and I think I had issues with their graphics/colors.
    I found this to be far superior than Overdrive and this is still one of my top picks for the N64. With the exception of the arcadeyness (what are you expecting, it's on the N64?) this game does everything perfect. Small, tight courses, passenger callouts for turns ahead, starting cars off 5 seconds from each other and it being more of a time trial...? That's everything that rally is! I loved the RPG aspect and being able to control every part of your car. I love that blasting over uncovered railroad tracks at full speed destroys your tires. Was the damage system super punishing? Yes, BUT if you got really good at the game, it didn't matter. As far as the game not holding your hand and telling you what to do, who wants that? Ever play Super Mario Bros.? It didn't need a tutorial. Live. Die. Learn. Live Again.

    Having written yesterday a (overly) disagreeing comment on the Top Gear Rally review, I figured I should comment on this one as well for good karma, because I agreed with everything you mentioned.
    The sad reality about sequels is a lesson that we all learned the hard way when we were young. Having loved the first TGR, I distinctly remembering gazing at copies of TGR2 at store shelves at the time and feeling very, very tempted to buy it. The cover featured proper licensed cars, and of course that could only mean this game was better than the first.
    It took 5 seconds watching the gameplay to know that I would have been tremendously disappointed had I bought it. This is another reminder of how much I enjoy (still today) the first game's physics engine. It's so unique and unlike how other racing games feel that I still yearn for it to this day (and this comes from someone who enjoys Gran Turismo Sport and Forza Motorsport 7. Yes, I'm comparing Top Gear Rally to them).
    It has to be praised the amount of features that this game introduced. The driving school feels like something us N64 owners would have appreciated from not having a Gran Turismo equivalent in our system; the cars' sheer possibilities for customisation look amazing; and I confess I've always been a sucker for racing games that feature a random track generator (the dream of unlimited replayability).
    But all of this care with detail becomes secondary when the gameplay itself doesn't feel satisfying. Car damage is a good example of this: how rewarding is it to wreck your car by driving over a puddle of water if you can't do anything to avoid it?
    And the music department needs to be mentioned: it sounds ghastly, and another downgrade from the first game's soundtrack which, in my opinion, is its most under appreciated element.

    My recommendations are revert back into larger courses, higher speeds, and neutral steering drifts. Which is just the original TGR. This game wasn't great but could still be mastered by barreling through the stages without hitting the walls, which feels really good in both games

  • @X_Leonhart

    I remember buying this game back in 2000 just for the "Random Track Generation System" tag that was printed on the box. It really sounded like really cool feature... But boy I was disappointed. As you said, the game damage system was punishing as hell, so I spend most of the time with the arcade mode.
    I would love to see more vivid tracks, because most "pieces" used to assemble the courses felt barren and empty. The windmills didn't move, there was no people on the streets or towns... It was very lackluster.
    Nevertheless, I played it a lot. I used to select the longest courses and play them while listening to CD's on my boombox. It's was pretty relaxing.
    Great review, as always, Glenn. Best wishes!

    N64 never really gave Rally Cross for the PS1 or Sega Rally for the Saturn a run for their money in this genre of racing. But that's ok, great to see all these titles covered anyway. There's value to be found in these lesser gaming titles because by knowing and analyzing them we can truly appreciate what was achieved in the best games.

    Hyperbike and Top Gear Rally 1 were the 2 I kept coming back to the most; Top Gear Rally 1 for its paintshop and Hyperbike for the Cudati, the soundtrack and the track-maker. I liked the detailed functional damage in Top Gear Rally 2 but wish it had been put in the first game instead.
    Top Gear Overdrive I bought and sold twice; I found it the most arcadey of the lot and had the worst sound effects and soundtrack (although the guitar solo in one of the Grindstone tunes was quite good). Having said that, the cars were the most appealing in real life to me - that's probably why I went back to buy it again, then got bored of it and sold it again.

    All in all TGR 2 was just okay for me. I think I'm more of an arcade racer, so while the sim stuff was cool, it was all over my head as a kid. And the damage aspect of this was especially brutal. It wasn't a matter of if, but when was something going to break. Even if you avoided hitting the walls, one of your tires was going to bust at some point lol

  • @harrynak5198
    @harrynak5198 7 лет назад +1

    What a coincidence i bought this game for my own collection 3 days ago. I played it for an hour and had exactly the same feeling as you that it wasn't clear for me this is an arcade ore a simulation game. I also didn't like the fact that the cars start the race shortly after each other but not together. I think this is a OK game because you can drift quit nice and the nice details in the game you talked about. But if i want simulation i will play world driver championship.
    Love your channel, can't wait till the next video.

    • @harrynak5198
      @harrynak5198 7 лет назад

      Yes that could be the reason, maybe the races are simply to short. That's probably the reason the cars breakdown this fast because they want the damage mod to be a part of every race.

    Never cared much for this one myself when I rented it. Not a fan of driving sims in general, so that's no surprise. My fave Top Gear on the console was Overdrive, easily (never played Hyperbike though), but mostly, watching these reviews just makes me miss Top Gear and Test Drive (yeah, I know it never was on N64, I still associate it with the era) and other old franchises from back in the day. Gamers today, even with indie titles and "AA" or "Middle tier" options, have so many fewer racing game options :(

    I loved the game, but the review was really bizarre at some points of it. It was my very first rally experience back in the days (2001 for me), only years later I found others to challenge my experience as the years passed. I had a few but only Dirt Rally and 2.0 actually made me feel the thing after that. Not everyone enjoyed arcade fun, realistic and tough challenges was a dream to become a simulator. Too bad that I think such tastes still wins over what a real simulation should do. Recently Dirt 5 came out ditching simulation over arcade, it pleases the masses better = sells better.

    I love the graphics and car models in this game, it's very smooth and colorful. could be better though. It's a damn shame that this game doesn't have a legitimate single race mode where you can choose any car and track you unlocked to play without worrying about game progression, NFS High Stakes had this problem too, and its what turned me off from it a bit.

    great video but I think I had played another game because I think its actually pretty good haha, the management of your car parts and the strategy behind it was pretty fun, the responsiveness of the controllers should be better but I think its good enough and while the start of the game was annoying, when you get the full experience its actually a blast to play. No game of the year by any means but a hidden gem no doubt

    Therefore, when TGR2 was announced as a true sequel I bought it upon release.
    I had such high hopes for it but absolutely hated it. I gave it a fair crack of the whip but didn't enjoy it in the slightest. One of the few N64 games i ever sold. Just seeing that twitchy handling and remembering the too harsh damage system makes me glad i got rid of it!

    Okay, I’ve been struggling for days now trying to get this game to run properly on pj64 3.0.1, I’ve limited the frames so it runs about as fast as it should be, but even with the correct tires for the surface the wheel spin just immensely handicaps me and doesn’t perform like it should. I have the game on console and the wheel spin is manageable and expected, idk if it has to do with the way the emulator renders 2d or 3d models? But any ideas or input would be appreciated.
    Also worth mentioning I’ve fiddled with the VI rate to a point where the game runs smoothly and I’m not even sure which options I have or have not checked or unchecked at this point just to get it to the state it’s at now

    Honestly though, as Top Gear Rally was a gateway to some pretty dark places in my life--and frankly it didn't help matters that it felt so damn slow and boring--anything that goes against it is going to feel good in my book, and this sequel looks MUCH better than the original to me. No more of that stupid limitation where you're only racing against one other car at a time, the graphics look a LOT better to me personally, and the gameplay looks a lot faster. Even the idea of vehicle damage kind of interests me.
