Terrific work pushing your limits and facing fear, Hannah. I have a horrible fear of heights and 2 weeks ago starting doing some autobelays and pushing my own limits, so I can totally understand many of the points you made about listening to your body and trying to consciously climb smart not hard. Let's Go! You got this!
Thanks so much Chris. Great to hear your pushing your comfort zone on the auto belay. I’ve found that small steps really has been the key for me to unlock some more confidence at height. Really glad you liked the video and keep crushing your limits ☺️☺️
I liked how despite feeling fear and uncertainty in unfamiliar height terrain, you stayed in control and remembered to stop, rest and break when needed to assist you physically in getting to the top instead of fear making you rush to the top. Great stuff, would love to try this one day!!
I'm glad I kept getting reccomended your vids, you're probably the most relatable climber here on youtube and criminally underrated at 80k subs. This whole time I thought your channel was in the 100-500k sub range.
as someone who struggles with fear of heights and has started climbing partly to work on it or rather work with it, im sooo impressed with how you managed the blue route. It was like watching a thriller or something, i had funny legs and clammy hands haha ! kudos to you hannah!!
I've been watching ever since I started climbing about 4-5 months ago and this has been my favorite upload to date. I struggle with the fear of heights on normal boulders so this was beyond motivating!
Just wanted to say a massive thank you. A group of friends and I planned a trip to font last week and in the face of such terrible weather cancelled at the last minute. This video inspired a staycation climbing trip which included staying in Chester and heading over to the boardroom to see the Psicobloc for ourselves and we were not disappointed! The boardroom is an amazing gym and the blue route you finished on in this video was glorious! I still can’t feel my arms…
Amazing work Hanna! Wanted to say that when dealing with higher falls you don't really want to practice too much. The idea is to fall on the back, however when you are in the angle change and you get more vertical, that really increases the probability of injuries (like ankles sprains and neck lashes), especially since it's on a mat and not on a pool, as psichoblocs usually are. There is more of a "fear management" training instead. It is about managing the fear, accepting its reactions more that trying to reduce its intensity. Improvement is quicker than for strength if things go right, however it's harder to start and it's relatively easy for things to be done wrong. Otherwise there would be no people afraid of falling!
That was brilliant Hannah, I think we could all sense your anxiety listening to your breathing as you went higher. 😌👏 When I was younger and had no responsibilities I soloed a few limestones slabs and some routes in the Peak, but nothing that steep or hard, so I know how hard it is to control your mind.
Yes Hannah, you're really getting good at those big power moves! The commitment levels have gone up tremendously. You honestly seemed in the zone and controlled on that blue one that second time, which I don't think I ever would have seen a year ago. You've definitely improved a lot lately!
This is so, so impressive! I just tried auto belay for the first time this weekend and trusting it to catch me at the top when it felt like there was too much slack took a lot of effort (and tears), so to see you absolutely crush this beast of a climb while having that fear is really encouraging. Was on the edge of my seat the whole time, even said a little "come on hannah!" as you got to the top part of that blue lol
trusting an auto-belay was something whole new to you. its completly normal to be sceptical about it which can lead to fear. imo its also something different then trusting a climbing partner. if you repeat the "falling of" part you will completly forget about that fear - but only for like a day. it gets of course better the more often you practice it. but even pros sometimes jump into ropes to get back into good mental shape ;)
Thank you so much! I also struggle with top outs at regular height - so funny how we respond differently in different situations and can surprise ourselves sometimes!
An incredible film. Thanks so much for showing and sharing in depth thoughts on how you were feeling especially on the psicobloc. Your heel hooks are truly a thing of legend and definitely your special weapon, and your mindset is following suit. I love how you self-analyse as soon as you get down from a climb/boulder, a great skill in itself when most of us would just be gasping for breath and sweating cobblers! :)
Well done! Looked totally in control and did really well to control your fear. I know the feeling when you’re at the top of a boulder and you go for a hold that is worse than you expect. I think my heart would skip a beat in that scenario at that height. I’m impressed.
It's my local, first and so far only climbing centre, so I was so glad to hear that too. Although you tend to hear it from people sat around nattering too!
Wow that’s a long way to fall. I would have been to scared to do it so to see you climb it well done! That would have taken some guts to do that! Great to see you facing your fear Hannah, we need more of this!! Thank you so much :) 💕
Really good vlog, well done for overcoming a very scary climbing wall, my heart rate was increased just watching the points where you were moving from horizontal to vertical. I'm sure i'd have given up much lower on the wall through fear of falling.
Loved this, I held my breath watching you do that final ascent. Nailed it 💪💪💪. Can I also just say, this seems like a more confident Hannah in the last couple of vids and I'm here for it. Whatever you're doing keep at it and keep making great vids. ❤️
15:00 i could feel that breathing was from fear and not exertion haha - the higher up you got the higher up you knew you had to fall from - the more fear you felt haha 😂❤ i was feeling it FOR you!
Your videos are probably the most educational climbing videos. There are a lot of good climbing channels, but I think I have learned the most from your sessions with coaches and just watching you talk through your projects and fears. Psicobloc looks like a fun and safe way to overcome a fear of heights and practice soloing. I hope to get to try it someday 😊 cheers!
During the ad read if you watch your climbing it looks like the leg flick is pulling your hips and center of mass away from the wall. If you can cut back or eliminate that extra movement it might make climbing less tiring. You won't have to counter-act the pull from the leg flick with your arms.
I used to think I was scared of falling, now I realize I was just choosing not to risk it. A few months back I took a bad fall and got injured... I've recovered, but now every boulder feels like a psicobloc! I've just started really working on the fear, so this video came at just the right time. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us!
I broke my ankle from a really small fall (1 meter ish tops), and the moment I got my confidence back on the wall was so empowering. I downclimb as much as possible now tho 😂
Returning from a big break climbing (again) and glad your channel is still here growing from strength to strength. Funnily Anna showed me a video and I went "ohh I've chatted to Hannah on her videos a few years back!)
I want to go check this out. But falling on your back seems even more sketchy. What if you fall on your legs and then just use the momentum to fall on your back? Its sort of how I fall on a normal boulder. But falling straight on your back seems even more dangerous or at the very least harder to do
@@vuksa11111Even though falling straight on your back is a bit harder, I think it’s to prevent getting whiplash especially when you’re higher up. Falling on your back is quite a bit easier when you’re higher since you have more time from when you fall to when you land on the mat but at a lower height I do kinda agree with you that landing on your back is more dangerous
@@Rosie-om8xg Ah that makes sense. I wouldn't know as I never fell straight to the ground from that high up (Thankfully 🤣). But I see your point, will definitely check it out, thank you!

This was really fun and interesting! I would appreciate hearing some info about how to handle uncontrolled falls, not just on psicobloc, but also on regular boulders. Just go limp and splat? Or try to jump off when you feel the fall coming? All the falling videos seem to treat intentional falls ....
It was so so nice to hear an experienced climber talk about how sometimes fear stops you on a climb. And how when you choose to come down thats fear not skill level. I am so afraid of heights but I've fallen in love with bouldering 😅 and it makes me feel much better that sometimes even people that do it all the time get scared and choose to come down. And that the next time you try the route you can get through. I'm gonna keep trying!
My local gym! it's ace really takes some time to get used to that psicobloc but very rewarding. I took a fall on purpose from the very top hold just to feel what its like and im still here to tell the tale!
The habit in bouldering of leaving your chalk bag on the floor seems like a mistake here 😄 Strap it to your waist like a route climber. Every time you shook-out my mind was screaming ‘chalk up!!’
Only problem with that is the chalk clouds when you take the (sometimes inevitable) slam onto the mat. Love the Psicobloc but it's really pumpy, especially at the end of a session
I really appreciate you showing the fear and working though it. I know that's my personal barrier with hitting that next grade and appreciate seeing it can be done despite the fear
Absolutely! I feel like this day was a particularly good head day, but I struggle with fear in my climbing a lot and it’s a really great feeling showing yourself that you can do something you didn’t think you could. ☺️

Kind of cool that it also challenges us or makes it very difficult to practice crux moves in isolation as every time we would have to go through so much climbing to reach the crux move.
I live right next to this bouldering centre, there's another close by too called Boulder Hut, both very good places to climb! That outside area you started on is certainly harder than the boulders on the inside, I've no idea why it's set up like that.
There’s a staircase you can walk down, thankfully! I think I’d be stuck on top forever if you can to climb back down - looking over the top was really scary!
For the last four/five moves on the second blue I was actually shouting "come on, Hannah!" at the phone. That was just brilliant climbing. The Psicobloc (or should it be psychoblock?) looks absolutely terrifying. And I'm well impressed that you did the Square Space ad while you were climbing! 👍👍👍

I live right next to this bouldering centre, there's another close by too called Boulder Hut, both very good places to climb! That outside area you started on is certainly harder than the boulders on the inside, I've no idea why it's set up like that.
How do you get down from the top? Are there stairs behind or something or do you have to climb down?
Yes
There’s a staircase you can walk down, thankfully! I think I’d be stuck on top forever if you can to climb back down - looking over the top was really scary!
such an awesome vid!
Great video ! Surprised it didnt have a big foam pit underneath. That would be really fun !
MY FAVORITE VIDEO OF YOU!!!!
👍👍👍
Same sending the encouraging stoke through the screen
Wow, nice job on that blue V4.
Thats so cool. Well done, i could feel the fear! Literally holding my breath for you 😂🤩
Was rooting for you so hard on the blue ! Would love to visit this gym
I was scared shitless when I climbed the yurple, not a chance you'll catch me on the blue 🤣 well done.
