1965 panhead #160 74ci flh motor rebuild and bike repair harley by tatro machine
the customer purchased the 1965 panhead a few years ago and has been sitting ever since. the motor needed a rebuild so that is getting done now. the chassis is being checked out and repaired as needed to make a good rider out of it. when you buy an old bike this is what you get and what you need to do to have fun with it.

Man it's so awesome to see a man as blue collar with callused hands have the ability to show love to his dog. No matter how busy you show Scoobie that you love him and it's so obvious that he appreciates it. I ride a very very. clean 2006 softail night train and retired from building skyscrapers a year ago. Brought back memories of my `67 FLH. Bought it off a sailor at Hickam AFB Honolulu in `73. Shipped it back to Milwaukee in `76. Took 6 weeks and generator light came on at start up. Owned it 25 yrs. Sold it to get a faster airplane.
Great job tatro. This is how it is keeping this beautiful old school iron running. Watching you kick that beast & finding the problem is aspiring. I’m getting back on my 67 shovel. Some similar issues. I very much appreciate you sharing your knowledge . Very very few so called Harley Mechanics across the United States have the knowledge & balls & determination to keep these machines running. Today’s Harley “ mechanics” at HD shops lack the knowledge & common sense too Man up & get the job done. Thank you for sharing this w/ the few of us who don’t mine fumes oil & gas blood sweat & tears that go into building riding racing our own machines. For the Haters why criticize some one for trying to share a wealth of knowledge to a generation who can’t function w/ out a iPhone & Starbucks . Keep the vids coming your awesome .

got out of the suck in 76, in 77 I brought a 49 pan basket case for $750, put it together and rode it until 83, sold it to my brother and he ran it for 10 years. he sold it for bail money and it's still out there somewhere running. i miss it and all the headaches and fun i had.
its hard to keep a good bike down.

I use dielectric grease on my HV lead boots it helps keep them on.
Only cause i had trouble with one of them slipping off.
Solid work as usual man. I Wish you weren't so far away. Im rebuilding my Uncles 72 Troublehead. My dream bike is an FL but I sure love them Pan heads. Oh well Maybe in my next lifetime. Keep up the great videos.

Chain trapper, you speak English very well. Why don't you rebuild the engine yourself? Get a good service manual, some good tools (some special) and somebody with experience building engines to watch over you. You can do it!

Anti-seize on plug threads is wise on any vehicle. I don't get paid to install inserts on my own vehicles (and to hell with doing it on 4.6/5.4 Fords!).
Tune up from hell 80% chance its going to need helicoil plug .poor bastard that was the 1st to find out thats normal.bring back the pinto. F ed over rolling disaster.

One cool thing about NGK plugs is that the threads are plated. There theoretically isn't a need for the anti-seize. That being said, I still use it on my stuff.
that might be but they don't gall up when i do use it and sometimes they do when i don't use it.

@@nakedzebra67 it's definitely some good stuff. Before I retired I was a steam fitter and welder, we put that on 2 2 and 1/2 inch bolts on Main steam lines I got up to 1800 degrees come back a year later breaking loose with a hammer wrench

I was taught to take a long screwdriver and a rag on the handle to use as a stethoscope for noise finding when people see me do this now they ask me if i have a stethoscope i say nope i dont need one,kinda like you and the nut torque spec years ago i worked for chevrolet tourqu specs for mains and heads were 1/2 in impact rods 3/8 (zip then short burp)
if i have to do all that it is not bad enough to worry about. bad parts will let you know.

Great video Tatro, I have a 59 fl it had a metal filter element and I’m wondering if that’s what they originally came out with? Perhaps to stop it catching fire from back fire? Cheers
the metal air filters are stock for the 1954 and earlier models. somewhere after that harley went to a paper air filter that i think was around 1956? either one can be used so you are ok. a k&n style air filter will let the motor breath better so it makes more power.

Tatro is it always the lifter when there's valve train noise or could it be a loose pushrod.. I'm just now starting to notice some noise in the front cylinder......2004 twin cam road king. 95" kit with cams, adjustable pushrods was used. I bought the bike with work already done on it.

when flooded ....choke open , ign off , full throttle , 3 kicks . Then turn ign on and start
or, full throttle, no choke with ignition on. there is no one way to do everything and if one method doesn't work try something else.

Linkert M74b indestructible. Still have a couple w/venturi machined. I've got a ton of hardware/fittings I'll never use. Everything from seat spacers to banjo fittings for a rigid pan.

Use a 2 foot piece of broom handle and listen to the valve
a couple of hi density pads in the pans will help hear the slap

Ive got a sigjestion get a divers weight belt with 20 pounds of lead and your scrany little self will kick it over easyer lol i had to through that at you i learned to start my 58 pan full choke kick it 4 times with my left leg then turn the key on and one good kick it starts every time try it youll like it even all my shovels are the same way 4 good kicks with the choke on key off then turn key on one good kick and wala it lives every time even. My nortons and most all my brit bikes started the same way
or you could just learn how to kick. it takes a strong ass leg to do it correctly if you are not a fat ass.

are those factory Harley Davidson heads or V-Twin. I am going to swap mine back to panheads on my 65,because the orevious owner installed shovelheads years ago for a little more horsepower but i want to restore it back to the original type heads. i don't use v-twin heads, i like good parts. i mostly use stock heads that i fix as needed for the application.

we had the same lift at one of my old jobs except it was modified for snowmobiles and had a hydraulic cylinder installed to operate with compressed air. went much faster than that one does is that one electric?
yes but i can stop at any point and work at that height. you can't do that with the other lifts.

Tatro Machine Hi Keenan from what I’ve been researching the camcorder (if that’s what you use) first of all has to be hooked up to yr computer some camcorders can do this wirelessly if yrs can’t then you need a lead which I think in yr workshop is not a good idea ? 🤘🤘🤘

All my bikes are kick start only except one and I kick it anyways they are all one to two kick bikes pan ,shovel ,lron etc etc
Once you get the bike dialed in and figure out how it likes to be started, no problem. I owned a fair share of American and British bikes in my youth. Each one has its own starting sequence. I think a bike should be kick started, unless the owner is physically or medically unable to do so.
in my 10+ years of riding 2 wheeled internal combustion vehicles every day, i have come to find that there are only 2 kinds of spark plugs worth noting, NGKs, and crap.
that about covers it.

If one has installed a dyna electronic ignition on a panhead, should one use register plugs or not?
all electronic ignitions require resistor plugs and suppression plug wires.

What carburetor is one this bike? Many decades ago my brother bought a 1964? Pan that had no choke but had a Tillotson carb with a tickle. He let me ride it all time even though I was only 14 and had no license.....no big deal in those days. I remember it so well because the seal on the tickle would leak and if the bike backfired while kicking it over not only would the pedal smack me hard on the back of my calf, but the gasoline around the tickle would catch on fire and burn my thigh if I didn't notice it. The seal looked like it was some kind of felt and would wick fuel out of the float and burn with about a 6" high flame. AH! Those were the days! I developed a lifelong love of motorcycles, mainly Harleys and still own a 1997 Road King I ride on a regular basis. No more bruises on calves or burns on thighs though.
🤣 so I have a Scooby too!! Although her name is not Scooby it is Annabut the point is no matter how many times you walk around that lift she's either following me or she's on the other side of it in the way! 😂 So hearing you say "watch out Scooby"or "backup backup"sounds just like me trying to shoot my dog out of the way!! Funny thing is is we wouldn't have it any other way!!😉

Damn, just put solid lifters in it already.
First winter I stored my twin cam I changed the oil first and it got so cold in my shed that the oil in the lifters turned to jelly. When I started the bike in spring they all collapsed and wouldn't pump up even after a half hour running the engine. My Dealer told me I needed new lifters - I took them out of the bike and pulled each one apart, cleaned them, pumped them up with an oil can and refitted them..... damn dealers are thieves......
no, they just have no idea on how to fix anything. they only know how to replace parts. next time use better oil.

consequently, everything will be done by replacing the parts, the regulation and the engine will quietly work.
This is why I chose to run Velva Touch lifters. If you want the best they are the best. I'm sure they have a Panhead application. They're expensive as all hell but in my opinion you get what you pay for. The stock tappet blocks on the late model Evo's were aluminum and were slap wore out on my 1998 after 130,000 miles. I even lost oil pressure as a result! I immediately noticed a significant increase in oil pressure after installing the Velva Touch lifters. It sure was great to see this 1965 Pan come to life, GREAT job KT & Scooby!!

i will take the s&s evo conversion lifter kit any day. they are bigger in diameter and will live longer. yes i would like them to be made out of cast-iron too. harley did make cast-iron lifter blocks in the late 80's and i have several sets for special uses.
a stock set of lifters and blocks would have done the same thing with your oil pressure. worn out parts are what they are.

having the dizzy cover off might cause problems if the carb floods/leaks gasoline. Just a "safety thought".
you have got to be kidding. you think its better to hold the gas in the carb as it burns up the bike. i would rather have it leak and burn on the ground. i can deal with that fire alot easier than the bike being on fire.
if you noticed, when you get a carb fire you kick the bike over until you suck all the fire into the carb. not run away like a little girl.

If for some reason the needle valve hangs open, pours gas out overflow or mouth of carb, , puddles at base of or near the dizzy and the spark from points sets off the fumes from the carb's gasoline overflow, flames up,and burns the paint etc you'll have a big expensive mess. Furthermore, I see little need to have the DISTRIBUTOR COVER off, once you established the points are getting power & spark plugs are firing .What you did there would you have you reprimanded or even possibly fired from most reputable H-D shops, if the owner spotted you doing it.. And yes I have worked for H-D shops including a franchised dealership. BTW, I'm not a kid nor a ittle girl, and have been working on H-D motorcycles for over 35 yrs myself. I've also had to put out a couple H-Ds that caught fire from people doing similar to what you did. FWIW, I was just trying to pass along a safety tip. Seems you're not interested though, so do as you wish.....Good Luck, you're going to need it with your carelessness.
FWIW I built a 1976 BiCenntenial Edition Super Glide to match her husband's original 76 BC SG, that appeared in Easyriders Magazine, on the "Foxy Riders" page back in the mid 1990s. It showed a pretty girl (Daisy, the owner) riding it dressed in a white tight outfit if you care to look it up. I also built a Panhead Duo Glide that came in 2nd at Charlotte NC bike show in the 1980s ..considering the 1st place bike was built at the judge's shop for a customer, not too bad I say. BTW I built that 2nd place winning Panhead in a customer's living room too. (hence SAFETY with GASOLINE AND IT'S FUMES) . Not to mention working on many, many , many bikes at a NC H-D dealership and later several other shops servicing, buidling, rebuilding, and maintaining a lot of different Harleys. Also I was a founding member of a SC Motorcycle Club. So yeah, I have PLENTY of experience working on and riding Harleys. And with dealing with assholes.
Also FYI I don't run from you or anyone else. BTW try calling me a pussy to my face and see what happens. You act like the rest of these "keyboard commandos". .you want to disrespect someone without facing them in person. Although you appear to be old enough to know better it' appears you are not. Rather you got incensed when someone merely pointed something out to you trying to HELP you, and resorted to childish name calling. Look up the word "maturity", you need to read the definition.
BTW, back in the 80s & 90s I personally owned two H-D Shovelheads, both of which I kick started with ONE ARM. I never needed to use the electric starter to crank them, because I know how to tune one. But then Panhead kickstarters used a different "ratio" and can be a PITA to kick at times. BTW the fact that the spark plugs ignited the gas mixture in the cylinders is a pretty good indication the points were doing their job , after which you could have/should have re-installed the cover for the "dizzy"and if you don't think a set of points breaking can ignite fumes from gasoline you truly are in need of some educating.
Tatro, I was merely trying to point out something to you that could save yours or a customers bike (& maybe even your entire shop)from being damaged or burnt up, by something you just overlooked/your carelessness. But it seems you'd rather be bullheaded and NOT consider good advice when it's given. Not to mention disrespecting said advice giver. BTW, prying out the roller lifter assembly with two screwdrivers instead of using a magnet stick too isn't too bright either. But if it works..whatever. Seems to me you need to stop trying to defend something you overlooked/did not notice , and just admit leaving the distributor cover off while cranking the bike for the 1st time after a rebuild while you have a flooding carb or at least a good chance an unexpected fuel leak causing gas or it's fumes to be ignited by the breaking points, isn't the brightest of ideas. I will give you credit for saving and buildng the old H-Ds though. Glad to see old panheads brought back to life.
Just be more careful with gasoline and ignition sources in the future, itd be a shame for your shop and all those parts to lost in a fire caused by such carelessness. BTW, notice I didn't call you any vulgar names or disrespect you in this post. That is something else you should learn to do.

all of this bullshit comes down to the fact that you want to do a bunch of what if this happens bullshit. i don't give a crap about what you have done when you bring up a bunch of crap like that. if you are such a good mechanic than why in hell is your carb flooding over? why didn't you fix it in the 1st place. why didn't you turn the damm petcock off. why are you kicking over a bike with gas flooding all over the place. all of these things are what a dumbass does. if this is how you work than that is what it is.

same deal on the points. just because the spark plugs fire does not mean that the points and condenser are good. when you put them under load that spark can go all to hell. when i said i just had a bike in here that was that way that is because it was. i don't bullshit around, i tell it like it is and if you don't like it i don't care.
if you can prove to me there is a better way of doing things than the way i do it now, than most likely i will change how i do it. i work with truth and facts, not bull and theory's. what i do has been proven to work by me over many years of doing it. you have years of doing it your way and that is fine for you. for me i do it my way because that is what i have learned over the years.
now, can you take a bike you put together over a week with no sleep and run it at the track and not worry about doing it? i can and do. i even video it so others can learn and maybe even get off their butts and do it themselves. its all about having fun. you do shows, i race, thats just how it goes.

Had a '55 pan, I hated it, piece of junk. Folks, what you see on this video, with no disrespect to tatro, is exactly the way it is with old Harleys. Constantly fixing, replacing, adjusting something all the time. It took me ten years to finally figure out I got better things to do. I had a '78 shovel, same BS
old anything is what it is. you can fix it all at once or a little at a time. you can also upgrade many of the parts and make it alot better. than you can always take a softail and add in a new panhead motor and get what you wanted, a new bike that looks old but last.

Rode a '60 pan for 6 years with no issues, then a '76 shovel for 7. It's not the brand.
Yes no fat asses on motorcyclez im 6 foot 245 and all muscle except for my schlog. When i kick my 58 pan i put the kick pedal on top and the front piston on the bottom commin up and a. Good napa condencer and points. 4 kicks to prime. With the key off full choke you gota make the crank spin fast so try kickin with your left leg it takes some gettin use to
three kicks for the choking is all you should need. more than that runs the risk of flooding out the plugs with all the raw gas you are dumping into the intake manifold. i kick with both legs as one gets tired i move to the next one. you can also kick harder when you are on the side of the bike because you can not bend your knee to get the maximum kicking force when you hit the seat. the lighter you are the more kicking technique you need.

Interesting that you're using NGKs . The European ones are now made in China. My local plant hire business has switched to Bosch. The local race tuner has switched to something else. They had the same issues I've had. My flathead Norton runs Bosch now, Made in India...... . Pity as for 40 years NGK were my favourite. It's not clear whether the problem is genuine NGKs or copies flooding the supply chain.

i buy all my plugs right from a distributor so i don't get the junk copies. i have had no problems with my inventory.
when you shop for the cheapest products on the internet, sometimes that is what you get.

Problem is in Britain the main suppliers' product is suspect. Nothing to do with the interweb
i learned long ago that if you use a hose about 2 feet long hold one end to your ear and other end to area where you think the noise from lifter is hammering from no oil, you will find it easy to fine the location of the bad noise you dum ass....
