- Impossible Climb Arette 2023: Drawing a record attendance of approximately 5,000 visitors on Sunday, August 20th, the renowned "Montée impossible Arette" event showcased exhilarating challenges for its participants. Despite their best efforts, no rider could conquer the summit of the hill.
Adding to the spectacle were numerous custom-built bikes, boasting over 100+ hp. These monster bikes, equipped with large tires and powerful engines, roared and strained against the incline, trying their utmost to complete the daunting hill climb.
The sun blazed overhead, bearing down on the participants of the 2023 edition of this Arette challenge, with thermometers recording temperatures surpassing 35°C, unusually high for the typically cooler mountainous region.
Recognized as one of the five events in the French Hill Climb Championship, the Arette race features a track that's 230 meters long and 8 meters wide. This track, riddled with obstacles, leads to the coveted local ham prize which awaits those daredevils who reach the hilltop of Mouline.
Given the slope's steep incline, ranging between 70 and 82%, it's instantly clear to any onlooker that this ascent is not for the faint-hearted.

It's like drag racing, only it's vertical instead of horizontal. But no burn outs.
I assume this is the hill my parents had to walk up when they went to school as kids

Unless you have hillclimbed on a dirt bike it’s hard to comprehend the skill and courage it takes to do this.
Ya think?

When the hill is tough enough to prevent anyone from completing it, and there is a wide variation in the completion rates, I would say it is perfect.
a front wheel driven bike should work easy. but i did not know if that is allow

I'm a 70-year-old man and boy does this bring back memories😢
It´s like watching Elasto Mania live!
I remember being with my father and his friend way back in the woods on trials we used to ride. There was one very steep hill that wasn't part of the trail really, but it was just a challenge. I was on a Yamaha TTR-125 and I was just a kid, but they were both on quads. Robbie I think had a Blaster and my father was riding a Polaris of some kind. They both tried to climb that hill. Robbie fell off and the bike came back down and my father ended up getting stuck up against a tree.
The hill wasn't nearly as long as this one, but it was every bit as steep.
You know what would be a good idea is if they attach a thin paracord rope to the bike and have a pulley system at the top of the hill that pulls on it as it comes up. Not enough pull to add any assistance but just enough to hold the bike up before it tumbles back down on the rider. Similar to how a rock climber can go up the face of a mountain without assistance but if they fall, the rope catches them.
Bike on head Part of Show. Good stuff

Rhythm for the reason. Dirt bike hill climb is on of like so many sports in a man's competition to get goods and be corrected.
The yellow diesel bike was cool.
It’s a very interactive sport. Nice to see the spectators get up close and personal with he flying motorbikes.
Do you mean the event staff wearing pretty much no protective gear? yes, that's nuts but I assume they have a certain level of 'safety training' at least, haha. But I think the spectators themselves are seen at some distance behind barricades, are they not? Now I'm sure some of those spectators would like to be right in the mix of the action, safety be damned just like they do in the Tour de France!
I love it and I love it, and it’s a complete sport...
The coolest part is watching the exhaust blow dust to the sides. Hell of an effect.
3:45 was way too beautiful to be on that sketchy ass hill🤣🤣

LET THE JEEP CLUB SHOW YOU HOW IT'S DONE!
They need to lower the handlebars and make the front wheel smaller to get more weight in front.
And, what about "ape hangers" - only sticking forward so rider can lean forward over tire?
Make the front wheel smaller so it can't roll over the bumps for shit...@@wooferdevlin3571

Dayum that’s super fun, forgot who got to the top,I just love that noise!!!
Need a smaller front wheel, an engine with great torque at lower RPM and smoother throttle response, stand on the pegs, lean forward, keep speed just enough to carry through, and make sure your hospital insurance is paid up.
😂 Alright, armchair expert....
@mickeybee Woke up to act like a prick today.
One has a feeling that an electric motor cycle with suitable battery placement could be a winner. You get the insane torque of the electric motor at all RPM's and the weight of the batteries could be used to keep the front wheel in contact with the ground.
@@jonathanbuzzard1376 They are torquey. They produce maximum torque at stall rpm and it degrades in linear fashion from there all the way to max rpm. Your idea is note worthy and no doubt some one will build it one of these days.
Back in Utah in the late 70's and early 80's they had a Hill Climb called Widow Maker. They had Harley's, Hondas, Suzuki, you name it. (1200cc) Those were street bikes converted into hill climbing.
They would be a good competition for this Hill Climb. They might just Kick their asses... Just saying. I love this Shit!!!
We use to have a picture on our garage wall of this guy on Widow maker. He had the dorkiest face😂.
LOL@@Webedunn
I believe they moved the Widow Maker out there in Morgan. Just off I 84. They still run it twice a year. Cycles in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter.
Im sure that these guys know what they are doing but I can't see the advantage of stretching the motorcycle. And keeping the engine closer to the front would help keep the front end down in theory first bump on the incline you hit and it is working against you.
It would be awesome to have one of these bikes designed with the self balancing technology like the Hoverboard or the Segway.
Simply amazing 😻🤩
Suggestion: Do one last rerun of the winning rider, or put his run last in the vid.👍
50 years ago I looked like these poor souls while trying to ride my older brother’s 250 Suzuki dirt bike on level ground! Didn’t dump it but the torque almost jerked me free from the handlebars! These people are fearless!
An RM250 2stroke? Those things were terrifying, rather like the Honda 250R 3-wheeler that got them banned. The power bands were too much for newbies.

I ran 5th gear nadir toward a paved road in England using dark soil as my traction. I kicked down to 4 and hard leaned left as a road bike and I merged. We went full throttle together. My roost was minimum 30 feet of churn. The road guy nodded and gave me a throttle nod as I matched his speed before I had to stay in my farmland boundary. Pin the throttle and ignore the clutch! go go go

When you need traction the most the front wheel is in the air.
