1965 panhead #161 74ci flh motor rebuild and bike repair harley by tatro machine
the customer purchased the 1965 panhead a few years ago and has been sitting ever since. the motor needed a rebuild so that is getting done now. the chassis is being checked out and repaired as needed to make a good rider out of it. when you buy an old bike this is what you get and what you need to do to have fun with it.

I was the sportster wrench at "The Shop in Terre haute, indiana back in 1985. when I hired on , Big Jack, my boss said " I hate sportsters so you are my new sporty tuner ..I said, "great , l love sportsters " one of Jack's old customers brought in the engine from his ' 65 pan chopper to build a stroker ..jack bought him a kit from CCI that had just been released to the public .. so it's cheap thrills the day you open new toys to play with ..this kit was pretty cool..the rods where polished like chrome and so were the wheels .. jack say check out these rods .I grabbed my dial calipers ..and a S&S rod off the self and the new polish CCI rod across its beam was .007" wider than an raw forged S&S ...
so this CCI kit was starting to look like a serious bottom end and came with a balance sheet as it was a complete balanced rotating, assembly ...I hot busy on the heads cleaning up the ports with a die grinder for some free horsepower , and then new guilds and stainless valves , while jack drilled the cases for the rocker box oil return that bypass the stock cylinder return to dump directly on the wheels .jack was skeptical of the Jap pistons that came in the kit that were done very well as I had seen this type before from ricer race kits ..thin rings at the very top of the crown close together , top ring of moly , 2nd scraper of steel and three piece oil ring with and offset wrist pin hole right through the oil ring grooves to accept the longer CCI rods , don't remember the exact stroke but when assembled with the .030 over pistons gave us 88 cubic dollars x pounds of fun ..there was a cam with it but clue today I can recall any specs of but looking like the ramps on the lobes shot straight up for the longest duration .then dropped off straight down ..I had a snapon leak down tester at the time for checking rice rockets as that's the only way to find glazed out cylinders on them when the wannabes burn them up cruising all night up and down the "bash" ..so just before you set the push rods in I would always get a read out leak down on your valve job before you ever fire it off ..just so you know you have a base line of the specs before you hand it back to who knows what they may do to it.. I am seeing about 40% to 60% leak down that is very typical of any fresh build dry engine that has never fired off yet ! so I tell jack watch this trick .. with the leak down tester still pressurizing the head valves and piston rings I tap on the tops of the valve stems with a small plastic mallet and kerpop you will here air blow out the port associated with each valve...and at the same time you will see smaller numbers on your % leak down each time you tap on the valves ...this is what an engine first does on startup as you first here them coming into it ...so basically this engine is all broken in before it ever starts up ...this one I got it down to only 6% leak down with dry cylinders .she's gonna be a mover right off the bat..the owner takes her home only to come back a few days later .." she won't fire" and Jack is going over his usual imaginary diagnosis with nothing to see ..and the owner says no no no thats not it ...I don't have enough lead in my ass to spin it over with the kicker ..cause this one ain't got no button , kick only , hehehe .this is jokester time as I go lol.well jack had lost an argument with a light pole a few weeks before and was in a wheelchair til his knee grows back together and the ower looks at me as jack does to
.and it's like Oh no no not me i ain't busting my leg on no pumped up pan ... now it's not so funny as jack says if want beer money for tonight you're gonna fire up this pro stock beast first..damn black mail ..it throws a fire ball out it's giant S&S velocity stack attached to the biggest S&S carb I have ever seen .while they go try it again ..shit damnit here go and it bout drives my head through the ceiling as I pick my self up off the concrete ..I go " main jet?" ..well to try to save some time here . jack calls S&S the next day told them what we got , they gave us a jet number for the pilot jet and it fires off on the second kick with giant potato potato sounding like a top fuel rolling up to the line ..so I knew the customer myself and say ..there ya go Kieth knock yourself out ..he come back a week later with more trouble and says it's trying to lock up ..
I say no way I'm riding it as I got court for my last DUI ..so jack says run it down the alley past the shop let's see what is doing ...there smoke coming out the primary and sparks out of the brake drum ..as Kieth not destroyed the pin bearings out of the rear axle of his 1938 rear hub and mechanical drum brake ..I said I have seen it all now ..this behemoth motor we built would pull a weight sled clear out of the ring for all full pull contests. smoking a brand new barnett clutch ... 88 inch pans rule

that is a long ass comment to just say that 4-3/4" stroker motors haul ass and are hard to start. all very true plus they shake the crap out of you. time for another fun ride.

You need a broken scrap solar panel. You can ask an annoying hang-around stand out on the side, hold it up, and keep it aimed at the sun. Make 'em feel involved. Plus you get green points from the fruits and nuts.

Hey Tatro. I’m rebuilding the top end of my Twin cam do you suggest I use break in oil when it’s time to fire her up? 😎

not most of the time but whatever works for your application is the correct way. as you can see i do different things to try and find what thew motor wants. even the elect starter didn't work at times. still working on the tuning but i will find the sweat spot.

I know a guy (I was in the Navy with) who put the wrong type of oil for a Helicopter turbine causing it to go down in the ocean. He made the mistake because during "darken ship" they turn on red lights in the hangar Bay and he did not realize the container of the bottle was a different color. TRUE STORY!!!
