    I had two of those in the past. Great engine. Took me many miles. One was an 1974 FLH and the other 1980 FLH police special. Just keep a set of points and a condenser in the saddle bag, at least one chain link, one clothes hanger and you are ready to ride.

      Seem's that issue is universal ,, I've had to deal with a few myself Bro...But then I figured the hell with it I'll do it myself So today NOBODY touches a lousy bolt NOT a nut ,, I've had to resort to my own skill's, but being born a true motorhead ..i'm good mate..

    Those fins look great. Thanks for the informative vids on how to redo them. I've never delved into fixing fins, mainly finding good finned heads to start with and now I have incentive to do so from seeing them go from ugly welds to nice machined fins.

    Save your leftover chopsticks from chinese takeout, they are perfect for sticking in spark plug holes when looking for tdc. Even if they break off, they burn up and can't really damage metal..

    Of all the thousands of mile I put on my Shovelheads, I never had a major problem with the engine or transmission. Think I only replaced one clutch.

    Not sure if that's Powder coat on those cylinders but if it is powder it holds alot more heat than paint. Badass motor though. I just picked up a 80" shovelhead engine I'm gonna go through.

    You might want to try either Snap-on or Mac Tools combination style Line Wrench the open side of the wrench is just under double the thickness of a normal wrench and the other end is a 6-Point box end wrench that has about a flat and a half cut out of it. The wrenches are designed to be used on nuts on tubing (Brake lines etc). The other another option could be a 6-point style flared-nut crowsfoot they are similar to the "box-end" of the line-wrench except you use a breaker bar as the shaft of the wrench. They are similar to the torque wrench bar socket you use except they are 6-point and have about a flat cut out of them so they can slip over tubing to tighten or loosen the nut.
    Instead of using a Phillips Screwdriver as a probe to find the position of a piston I use a 3/8 thick wood dowel that I have rounded the tip on. I started using the dowel after seeing and fixing the damage that Screwdriver's can do to a Cylinder Bore, Cylinder Head and or Piston because of carelessness and being an idiot. I totally agree that with reasonable care it is hard to damage a piston or a cylinder head with a Phillips Screwdriver however I have scene it done and don't want the fickle finger of fate fornicate or be visited by that rotten no good SOB Murphy so why tempt fate. Anyway that is my 2-bits worth of whatever today. I hope that when Keith has his engine installed in his scooter that he brings it by your shot for a video so we can see and hear it running

      good tips. i never did like line wrenches. i just can't get enough torque out of them. cut down box wrenches work better for me. most crows foot are too big to fit.

      Definitely depends on the brand of line wrench. However when it comes down to it the best tool to use for any one particular job is the one that works best for you.

    Are Colony chrome products and hardware high quality? As compared to a gardener wescott or even mcmaster Carr. Any disadvantage to flanged 12 point in place of Allen ( schs ) bolts ?
    Steel vs stainless steel ?
    Sincerest of thanks for the knowledge your videos give us.
    No flip flops in a machine or bike shop. Ever....

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  7 лет назад

      colony makes very good hardware and gardner wescott are fairly good too. i don't use mcmaster carr or flip flops. i like bare feet and 12pt hardware but one of them cost to much.

    Hi,I have a 3 5/8 S&S Shovelhead engine from 1978 .I have tryed to torque the cylinderheads proparly but is not a easy task with standard tools.
    Is there any good solutions,or do I have to buy special tools from S&S?

    Would flare nut wrenches help eliminate push rod nuts from rounding off?

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  6 лет назад +1

      not really because they will not fit onto the pushrods. use the weanches like i do and they will be tight and not damage the nuts too much.

    Used to work on aircraft, nuts on push-rods look like great candidate for safety-wire. Just a thought.

    Is the 18 flat adjustment only with hydraulic lifters?

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  6 лет назад +1

      if you want it to run. you also have to know what thread pitch your pushrod adjusters are. this is for 32tpi.

      On solid lifters I adjust just enough to spin them by hand, correct? The 18-20 flats rule does not relate to solid lifters, right.

    What would you recommend for oil for a Engine Break in ? API SB for the First 800 Miles and Then Change to API SF ? For shovel and older . And for Evo API SF 20w50 in General ? Thanks :)

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  3 месяца назад +1

      i use a real break-in oil made by driven or maxima. i use 2 or 3 qts of the 15w50 break-in oil and then thickin it up some with a straight maxima oil. 70w on the older motors and 50w on the evos on up. run it for 300-500 miles and then add 25/60 maxima oil for the next 1000 miles or so. after tha, use what you want. i like tribodyn for the most power and protection.

    Use tappet wrenches on push rod adjusters to avoid overlapping onto the flats of the lock nut. Kind of hacked that whole job 😥
