Part one of a two-part series. This video focuses on the urban / street photography captured in evening light during Magic Hour in the Dundee neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska. Part two will focus on the same thing but in morning light. This neighborhood has been the subject of my photos and videos for other projects in the past, and I've always loved how the sunlight looks between 7 pm and 9 pm in early June. The light deserves a camera with more dynamic range, but I wanted to see what I could get out of a $10 thrift store digicam to see how much shadow detail could be retained when exposing for the dwindling light in the sky. Well, not much. And this is a reminder why expensive cameras or shooting on film is so desired - the ability to preserve details in the shadows while preserving information in the highlights is critical to matching your photos' dynamic range to that of your eye.
Or getting as close as possible.
Music for this video was mixed using Track Club's Mix Lab feature where you can custom mix any song to adjust the volume of specific stems or exclude specific stems to make your own version of the song.
Audio for this video was recorded in the locations where the photographs were taken using a combination of a Tascam DR-10L lav mic attached to me and the RØDE VideoMic NTG on my camera while recording video.
This video was edited with Final Cut Pro.

I’ve gotten used to having to choose what I want to expose for in high dynamic range situations - the sky or the shadows. You can absolutely get details in the shadows with modern mirrorless cameras that shoot RAW, but you often have to paint them back in in the edit to get them in a good spot. With digicams that only shoot JPG you gotta pick one or the other. I varied it up in the photos for this video, but I found myself always preserving the beautiful magic hour light over details in the shadows.
Admittedly a lot of the editing pushed the black point in order to get true blacks without a faded look. Let me know what you think!

Some really nice shots here! I think you’re onto a winning combination with using ambient field recordings while displaying your images, hopefully only a matter of time before you start seeing more subs and viewers roll in - these vids are really well made.
As for the T550 not capturing the details in highlights and shadows you’d quite like: “Th best camera is the camera you have with you.” - or so the saying goes. I recently picked up a Powershot G11, just so I have a camera small enough to carry with me everywhere. My DSLR is quite cumbersome to carry around.
Keep up the great work! Look forward to the next one :)

Thanks, Nick! And yes, even though the dynamic range is abysmal, these old digicams are a lot of fun. And the light blooms! As if it has a black pro mist filter already on it.
And I snagged a G11 as well! My video with the most views is just like this one but with the G11. That’s a really fun camera to shoot with and I ain’t letting it go any time soon.
      Appreciate you watching and commenting!

@@nickrohan2321 They seem to be quite popular. The G11 video has gained a lot of views just from RUclips searches. I’ve been busy shooting my other cameras so it’s been neglected.

So glad you like the look! I’d love to make a video about the process but that kind of video doesn’t quite fit the vibe of the channel. I noted in the end credits (and in the description) that I use the RNI Films for iPad app (also available for iPhone) to do a muted Kodak Portra 400 film emulation. Definitely check it out!

Are the photos edited like with presets or straight from the camera

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  11 дней назад

All the photos in my videos are edited using RNI Films for iPad. I use a very subtle Portra 400 film emulation and then make all the normal adjustments to highlights, shadows, contrast, etc.
I used this cameras “Chrome” preset as well. Thanks for watching!

i have my fuji xa5... its not a T series fuji or any of the viral fuji by any means but it takes way better looking film like pics than what id like from my digicam....
and ofcourse the obvious advantage of having the RAW/fast bracketing etc...
but the thing with digicam (mine is olympus vg140) its SOOO lightweight and small that i just bring it any where

    • @somephotovideos

Yeah, it's hard to argue with the convenience and pocket-ability of these 2000s digicams. I've been carrying this Casio digicam around with me (it has a slide cover and the lens is entirely housed in the camera body) and I absolutely love it. Turns out Fuji made a similar one, and I found one on FB Marketplace, but it has some issues that made it too difficult to feature on the channel but I'm definitely hoping to get one and showcase it. I think these slide cover digicams where the extending and retracting of the lens happens within the relatively thin body of the camera are the coolest digicams for those of us who really want something that we can have in a pocket for quick access. Appreciate you watching and commenting on this video and being a part of the Photo Videos channel.

any hints which one of the fuji this is?
dont mention it... like wise... i love watching them...
but YES lol xD as much as I like my olympus ccd digicam... I still want a fuji digicam ccd.. preferrably something in the middle of the era of ccd digicam

@laptoprelaks The Fuji I’m selling is the FinePix V70. It has some cosmetic damage and there’s a weird black circle in the LCD display - just a random solid black circle a little smaller than the size of a dime. I didn’t want to make a video with it because it’s not in the best shape. I am going to make a video using the Casio one I have that’s similar to it.
