    I drove to Chicago from Omaha in late November to celebrate a relative's birthday. On the way, I planned to stop in Des Moines to go camera thrifting. Ultimately I didn't find as much as I was hoping for, but one thrift store did have a digital camera that got me pretty excited.
    One that I had never seen before...
    It was the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS.
    And they wanted $20 for it.
    This camera caught my eye mainly because the LCD display is a 16x9 aspect ratio instead of the traditional square-ish shape. When I got to my destination in the Chicago area, I fiddled with the camera even more and was thrilled to see that it had full manual controls - ISO, aperture & shutter speed.
    How? A little compact digicam with full manual controls???
    It was as if my Canon PowerShot G11 and my Canon PowerShot A4000 IS had made sweet, sweet love and produced a little camera baby...
    Not only did it have full manual controls, but it also had arguably my most favorite setting in a Canon digital camera - Positive Film.
    Now you can only use this setting when shooting JPG and, fortunately, the SX230 can't shoot RAW so I was forced to shoot Positive Film with this little camera.
    A let me tell ya... I love me some Positive Film. So much so that I'm going to make another video with my G11 where I use JPG + Positive Film instead of what I normally use which is RAW with no presets.
    I didn't shoot much video with this camera, but I'm curious to try. I will say that shooting a full day on this camera was a real delight even in the absence of an optical viewfinder. I always made sure to protect my highlights and doing so made editing the JPGs much more pleasurable. In high dynamic range situations I had no choice but to protect highlights as much as I could and full manual controls made that very easy.
    I will say that I am a bit disappointed with what I saw (or didn't see for that matter) while shooting street in Chicago. It was unusually cold for late November so everyone was booking it to cars, trains or buildings so there wasn't a lot of opportunity for any kind of drama or interesting moments on the street. I didn't let it affect my objectivity while I walked around, but when reflecting on the hour+ train ride home, it was hard to ignore that I had higher expectations for such a huge city.

    I'm very, very impressed with this little surprise Canon digicam I found in Des Moines, Iowa for $20. Fully manual controls of ISO, aperture & shutter speed in a digicam? It's crazy! Let me know what you think about the Positive Film look it has...

    I got deep looking for something really portable to be hidden in a pocket and most importantly with a CCD sensor to get this nostalgic, vintage vibe and then... came your film 😁 that got me confused wondering is CCD an absolute must have? hmmm. great work btw!

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  5 месяцев назад +1

      I think that's a great question. And here's what I think. I think CCD is a must IF the Canon camera doesn't have the Positive Film preset. If you get a Canon digicam that's a CMOS sensor AND it has the Positive Film setting like this camera does, I think you can still get a great image with that combo. If I shoot Canon digicam with CMOS and there isn't a Positive Film setting, then I really rely more on the RNI Films app to create noise and give it a touch of a 35mm film look for that character I'm looking for.
      I had my doubts about the CMOS Canon digicams as well, but that was taken care of when I made sure to shoot in Positive Film mode.

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  5 месяцев назад +1

      Plus, to me, it's UNREAL that this little digicam has full manual controls AND shoots really nice 1080p video that has the kind of digital vibe I really like.

    • @dzanidzan
      @dzanidzan 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@somephotovideos yeah, that profile looks amazing and combining it with the CMOS instead of CCD still makes the photos look nostalgically great. Is there any place except this movie where your photos taken with this digicam can be seen?

    • @dzanidzan
      @dzanidzan 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@somephotovideos plus i've seen lots of photos combining CCD sensor and this Positive Film profile and they haven't been that good, which got me so so confused after listening to many people prioritizing this sensor to achieve this 90's/00's look

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@dzanidzan This is the only one so far. I'm trying to get through all the digicams I have and only repeat the use of digicams that are requested or maybe seeing a lot of heat in conversations about digicams. The G series from Canon seems to be exceedingly popular after seeing how my two videos on the G11 have performed. A lot of people searching for images from that camera.

    Hi. I'm looking to get a camera for my holiday of this nature. I love the retro style/CCD. However I dont know much about cameras and all the settings some cameras require you to know to produce nice photos. So I guess im looking for more of a point and shoot digicam. Does this camera require much setting up, or can you capture this quality in the video from fresh out the box?

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  2 месяца назад

      Great question, Thom. And that's a bit of a tough one to answer because I don't know that there's a really great option for that vintage look fresh out of the box. I do think the SX series might be a bit more complex than you may prefer - with this camera I can manually set aperture, ISO and shutter speed and that allows me really dial in my exposure so I don't have areas of the frame that are over or underexposed. There are always compromises in high dynamic range situations, but manual controls allow me to decide what I want to expose for (with digicams I often pay the most attention on the highlights).
      This camera is also a CMOS sensor but as a bonus it has the Positive Film setting which helps give a vintage looks to photos straight out of camera. My photos in this video are lightly edited using the RNI Films app to add Kodak Portra 400 film emulation and of course to tweak highlights, shadows, saturation, etc.
      If I were you I might look at one of Canon's PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH cameras. These do not have manual controls but they do have the Positive Film setting along with a CCD sensor. That trio of options can make for some really cool photos straight out of camera. If you go up to the SD1200, Canon removed the Positive Film creative preset from that camera for some mysterious reason...
      I'm partial to Canon because I think the combo of CCD sensor with the Positive Film preset gives a really great look right out of camera.

    Great pics and video! What were the settings you used on sx230?

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  6 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Very impressed with this camera. Settings were simple: mostly shot at f/8, 1/125 shutter speed, mostly 400 ISO. Adjusted shutter speed and ISO toward the end of the day. Maybe a few shots at f/5.6. White balance was set to either sun or cloudy but was mostly set to cloudy.
      And I used the Positive Film preset in the picture style menu.

    Hi ! I'm looking for a cheap consumer camera and this one seems great ! Are any of the videos filmed with the Canon SX230 ?

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  Месяц назад +1

      None of my videos showcase footage from the SX230, but for a digicam it does have pretty decent 1080p 16:9 video. Would I use it for creating content? Maybe. Only if I was trying to go for a retro vibe with my footage.
      You’re better off looking at an HD Sony Handycam or Canon camcorder in my opinion. You can get those on eBay or Facebook Marketplace pretty inexpensively.

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  5 месяцев назад

      It's a great camera and one I intend to keep. Mostly because you rarely see a digicam form factor with full manual controls for aperture, ISO and shutter speed.

    • @somephotovideos
      @somephotovideos  5 месяцев назад

      @@justarandomguy2863 I think it's a few things: I'm not shooting in automatic modes. I'm metering for the highlights and making sure I protect them so they don't get blown out.
      I'm also using the Positive Film preset built-in to the camera. Canon's way of giving the images a 35mm film look.
      And then I'm doing some very light editing using the RNI Films app on my iPad. It allows me to apply a very subtle Portra 400 film emulation and tweak highlights, shadows, etc. as well.
      But it's pretty subtle - I'd say the first two things are what allow me to get that vintage look straight out of camera.
