Very cool having Evan test the system on a race course. 👍💖🤓 Is there a mode which tries to maintain latency while sacrificing image quality? For racing would that be better? Thanks Joshua 😎
About the lap timer on 25mW : It didn't pick the quad because DJI transmits data in short pulses or because the antenna is left-hand polarised or else?
@@JoshuaBardwell But it's like 0-3Mhz difference, while the bandwith is quite wider, especially if you want to achieve 30+Mbps for the video in DJI. (and even on analog it's hard to fly for 8 pilots with 40Mhz channel separation). I am not sure about your answer...
Good vid josh. I know kwboost down here in Louisiana has been testing the dji setup on a racer. He seems to like it. From what I’ve seen it looks great but of course I think it’s still a bit big for a race build but that just my opinion. But it seems to work depending on the track I would think.
When someone knock your VDO of but not failsafe we can fly blind for about 3-5 seconds using the force. That's a huge different between catapult crash and controlled crash. If any Jedi in you, you'll get it.

(I’m a helicopter pilot, but recently got my 107.)
Very interesting as always. I have another question though. The link between the googles and the air unit is bidirectional, so should there be a concern about the googles transmitting (at what power??), literally on your face?
Not Realy 5.8ghz isn't a harmful frequency until you reach 10 to 15w. Just Google cellphone tower safety for maintance. There are sheets for almost any frequency
Peter Zingler is right. The goggles do transmit, but so does your cell phone. The exposure is very small due to the tiny amount of power the unit is outputting.
Is it just me or does it look like the video is dropping frames during those flights? Does the original file do that? I did notice the other day that as soon as I hit record I was loosing frames like that badly and it felt like latency. Had to format the sdcard in the air unit to fix it, might be something to check. From playing with my system I haven't seen any latency change in a open field like that when it's working correctly. Although, I'm not Evan Turner, no doubt he would be able to perceive increased latency better than I would.
Hi Joshua, another great video. I know everyone is still running tests on the DJI system, but wanted to ask, how do you feel that it effects flight time? Does it drain batteries any faster or still comparable with running Analog? Also, what is the difference in weight that's added when you use the DJI system? Just curious. Keep it up man, as always, great work.
I bought myself a quad (cheap tyro109) a month ago I then bought drl sim and started 1000 something the first time I raced on, Im now under 50th for most courses on drl. How do I get into racing?
Has anyone thought of adding a servo to tilt the camera and pair it with like a gyroscope mounted to the goggles so you can change the camera pitch while flying?
@@JoshuaBardwell I know this one is expensive, but would other things be expensive as well given that it’s digital? (Sorry if the question is a bit off, I am really new to these :) ) But then again, as I am new I should start with cheaper parts maybe
@7:43 tsk, tsk,.... Hook up the FC wires! No need to manually turn on DVR,... and it dynamically switches the power-level for "pit-mode". No need for 25mw in the US. With stock antennas, it's FCC cleared to go full power. No HAM needed,.. I know, I know,... races only allow 25mw. But everything has to be re-structured with a digital unit on the field anyways. Even at very low wattage of 5ghz WiFi, I had to change analog channels at home to keep those random white bars out of my video.
Love your videos. I would like to hear your opinions on DJI killing people's drones for no fly zones. Would this stop you from buying DJI in the future
The DJI FPV system we are using in this video does not have GPS capability (that we know of). DJI has no way of knowing where you are using it. As for them enforcing no fly zones on their other drones, I wouldn't really be in a position to say, because I don't own or use any Aerial Photography style drones.
@@JoshuaBardwell Thanks for the fast reply. I watch all your videos.. And I will not buy any DJI camera drone just because of that. There's a video on RUclips showing this guy dropping his drone in the drink because of DJI he was so upset
I’ve been wanting to buy an FPV kwad with the DJI system, but all the decent components are always out of stock and backordered. This hobby must be taking off! (No pun intended)
Looks sweet, I still say racing needs distributed, antenna on wires, four or so that sit out in the field and send multiple signals to a diversity box, that then feeds into the goggles.
@Joshuabardwell I have two questions. Regarding the tiny Hawk s, can I fly a 2s battery in profile 1, cus 2 is very aggressive indoors? Regarding the Taranis 9d se can I change the throttle mechanism like the DJI drone setups so the drone can hold altitude when I leave the throttle, I am used to DJI drones for years and I am fed up of trying to hold altitude in low speeds. Thank you.
Emax says you absolutely must use profile 2 for 2S. No you cannot set up the Taranis or Betaflight to hold altitude. The quad does not have the sensors or programming to do this. It's an acro/racing quad not a camera platform like DJI. You must learn to hold altitude yourself if you want to fly it.
When I was a noob I nocked someone out of the air at my field but I unplugged quick enough and they recovered. I have been able to do the same, and can fly with mostly static or no video long enough to get back into range. On the dji, this is impossible.
Only if you are using DJI for control. You have the option to control the quad using FrSky, FlySky, Crossfire, Spektrum, or any other traditional control link, if you so prefer. The "video" part of the DJI FPV system does not require the use of the "controller" part.
@@JoshuaBardwell that still doesn't fix the fact that when the dji goes out, it freezes for a longer period of time than you would be out of signal in analog.
Well i dont care much about the law here, but doesnt FCC frequency in EU have more probability of failsafing because of our cellular towers etc? That's the same reason i didnt take time and effort putting FLEX on my Frsky setup. With Telemetry as a sacrifice. Does anybody know if that is a thing to worry about or is it just bloated.
He said it's not r8 so it's close to r7 and r7 is a military used band in Europe and not legal. That's one thing. Then 5.8 is 5.8 won't change cell towers are between 900mhz and 3ghz for 5g lte atm
Yes, LTE cell phone towers are around 915MHz in EU, this is why FCC frequency is illegal here and might cause failsaves. You can use Flex Firmware though, it works great on 868MHz. I have 0 issues for months on FrSky R9. And telemetry is working too, even on 1W.
@@tstrrtstrr745 Im not really experiencing issues myself i'm on the latest "normal" firmware. But i'm using the R9 lite on 100MW without telemetry. But is the rssi in OSD now improved alot with the latest firmware? It's my only rssi i can get without telemetry.
That's so awesome! Thanks for the video. I would like to see a DJI Mavic 2 Pro being flown by an FPV drone pilot like him. Possible to see that happening ?
That would be like asking a F1 racer to drive a golf cart and expect something great. The mavic and the quads we race with are apples and oranges. No comparison. Plus the mavic has about a 1/2 second delay in video feed. You can’t do this type of flying with it.
These kids think they are racers these days with their HD video, smartvtxs and betaflight 4.0 audio nonsense. That's not real racing! Back in my day you couldn't even touch a gate because your props would explode and we didn't have any wide dynamic range neither. The screen would go pitch black if you even thought about changing lighting conditions. We liked it that way too. And the flight control software was proper too, proper vibrations so the whole quad felt like it was going to fall apart when you gave it some throttle. These racers today don't know anything. 6s pah, 3s was good enough then and it's good enough now.
Fraser Steen well back in my day computers were bigger than rooms, you don’t know anything! You get it easy, and we liked it that way. Come on dude no one cares, tech improves. And wth u mean when you said you liked it that way. You liked crummy drones that broke down whenever they hit something? Makes no sense my dude

Joshua Bardwell I was curious about that mode. In the spec it’s 120fps 720 in low latency vs 60fps 720 for normal mode. That’s counter intuitive to me, I would expect lower frame rate or rez for lower latency (less data)
slartibartphast you bring up a good topic about frame rate. 60fps (what our analog systems use) has a baseline latency of 16.7ms, it can’t get any faster than that. The DJI system in low latency 120fps has a baseline latency of 8.3ms. The higher the frame rate the lower the latency.
Great video . I think the variable latency would freak me out . I would accept higher latency if they could lock it . Maybe a lower quality mode with locked latency for racing would be a cool feature ?

About the lap timer on 25mW : It didn't pick the quad because DJI transmits data in short pulses or because the antenna is left-hand polarised or else?
Because the frequency is not exactly correct.
Pretty interesting tests, Joshua! 😃
I guess it's going to be fun when you have 8 pilots with this system to try to race and see what happens. 😃
MC's Creations already been done and it worked flawlessly. Also everyone was on 700mw
@@eparg1 Wow! Fantastic! 😃
Thanks for letting me know!!!
i dont know if it was the same video i saw. but the digital and anlog test i saw it doesnt matter which channel someone was usin, as soon as the analog startet the dji system was unflyable ``=D ...nice video btw XD
Any time there are two transmitters in the same channel you get interference. Not sure why people are holding this up as a criticism of DJI. Put Teo analog vTX on the same channel and tell me how flyable it is.
on the same channel i dont know why anybody is complayning about that `=) but in the video i saw they tested a lot of different channels to find a constellation that works :-/ that was the only reason why i was thinking buying it now is too early for this tech....thank you very much for responding dude =D
Hey. I really love your videos and Im planing to buy DJI HD system and build a drone. Would you be able to help me with few questions?
Can you connect more than one of the DJI goggles to the same drone?
You can only bind one set of pilot goggles, but other goggles can tune in, in "audience mode".
@@JoshuaBardwell thank you. I have wanted to buy the drone and a few sets of the goggles so that multiple people can watch me fly for them, but I have wondered about it. Don’t worry, I will use your affiliate links for everything I can. And I will be using your getfpv site for many of the tools and parts. (I’m starting a business.) (I’m a helicopter pilot, but recently got my 107.)
I am thought he made it fail safe even on differed t channels than other quad?
just 1 question, what was his rate
There were a few times when Evan said he notice a change in latency or a frame skip.
Keep it up man, as always, great work.
considering it gonna be way less than 5% of your used power, I don't think it'll effect flight time
You guys need to test that stuff on 25mw and with 8 HD quads in the air at the same time! Everything else is a little bit useless... :(
I bought myself a quad (cheap tyro109) a month ago I then bought drl sim and started 1000 something the first time I raced on, Im now under 50th for most courses on drl. How do I get into racing?
Has anyone thought of adding a servo to tilt the camera and pair it with like a gyroscope mounted to the goggles so you can change the camera pitch while flying?
Could you do some tests with different antennas than the stock ones?
Ton Miserachs someone just did a test on that and was able to significantly improve range
DroneRacer101 go to his channel
Also with uart enabled the recording is automatic.
Noob question, can you buy the goggles then use it and build your own drone?
Yeah definitely.
@@JoshuaBardwell I know this one is expensive, but would other things be expensive as well given that it’s digital? (Sorry if the question is a bit off, I am really new to these :) )
But then again, as I am new I should start with cheaper parts maybe
So can we add patch antennas to this??
Found the answer to my question here: ruclips.net/video/uhEGyfIsSNw/видео.html
Yes. and works much better when we were testing on 25mw focus mode off (truRC max air 2 on top two rx
@@JoshuaBardwell
Thanks for the fast reply.

Can you explain the 'crossfire control' part? Are you still using a crossfire RX and only using the DJI for video? Thank you!
Correct.
Pretty good video JB
Where's your race footage Bardwell?
Coming in another video.
Looks sweet, I still say racing needs distributed, antenna on wires, four or so that sit out in the field and send multiple signals to a diversity box, that then feeds into the goggles.
0:26 I cant believe he flew DJI drone. Which one? The mavic 2? 😁
I think you have some catching up to do ;)
VonZek I think he meant a drone with the DJI fpv system on it, not a drone made by DJI
That was a joke you guys
Joshua Bardwell Thank you Joshua keep up the nice work
When I was a noob I nocked someone out of the air at my field but I unplugged quick enough and they recovered.
Any way to measure actual output power like you've done on analog VTX's?
Well damn that's is the Field right next to my house if I knew it was at Washington pike I would have came out a flew it.
And telemetry is working too, even on 1W.
yeah that's only for the 900mhz range control links as thats one of the bands used by cell towers.
5.8ghz isnt used by celltowers.
@@peterzingler6221 Yes i know Peter, it's a little off-topic but i was speaking about regulations in general and i got a little carried away.
@@traxfpv thanks for taking your time out to share your insights! Really appreciate it.
who here remembers Evan Turner flying Josh Bixler's Guinea Pig? He wanted to do rolling harriers with it as a kid!
What quad where you using?
Thanks for the vid, good job,
These kids think they are racers these days with their HD video, smartvtxs and betaflight 4.0 audio nonsense.
Fraser Steen 😂🤣😂
Fraser Steen well back in my day computers were bigger than rooms, you don’t know anything! You get it easy, and we liked it that way.
Come on dude no one cares, tech improves. And wth u mean when you said you liked it that way. You liked crummy drones that broke down whenever they hit something? Makes no sense my dude
@Eddy Jin y so srs?
WHAT FRAME DO YOU USE FOR THAT CAREER? THANK YOU
A good frame for the DJI system is the TBS SourceOne. You have to remove the read standoff though.
@@JoshuaBardwell Would I have to modify it? same if I want it in an armattan ?? I think almost everyone does ??
Good i like it very much this video hay i have to stop for a couple of weeks on my project of building my 5 inch drone cause i was or still having problems with the software i got me a chip laptop cause i had a chrome book and i wasn't going no where with it so now i have the chip laptop but im having this problem with the windows 10 home its not good i have to change it to windows pro.
Does Focus Mode affect the frame-rate/latency situation?
Yes focus mode lowers the bit rate on the side which mean there is less data to send all the way back to the googles. Its like peripheral vision.
That was pretty sweet
Is it possible to fly multiple people at 700mw?
Yes.
Did you run it in low latency mode?
Yes of course.
Hiya Gesture Part Well, nice to see you on the Tube.
Funny name though....
What was steal complaining about? He said he would never change to FPV... looks like it works great for free style
Nice flying for it not being his rig. Good test!
Great video . I think the variable latency would freak me out . I would accept higher latency if they could lock it . Maybe a lower quality mode with locked latency for racing would be a cool feature ?
If you see Evan how its flying his quads on this track with analog you're gonna be mindblowned for sure, 1000x faster!
He is 1000x times faster when he is flying his own quad, not my 650 gram 6" freestyle/cruiser rig.
@@JoshuaBardwell He doesn't have that big of a problem with the weight of the quads,
but this is also a thing! HE is just mindblowingly fast like with everyhing which you give to him.
