    DJI FPV's July 2020 firmware update added a new 50 Mbps mode that blew my freaking mind. This is the closest to truly HD FPV video I've ever seen. Let's compare 50 Mbps to 25 Mbps and see how the image quality compares. and let's see how the range and interference compares between 25 Mbps and 50 Mbps.

    I'm truly thankful for DJI. I remember back in 2017 I bought the best FatShark setup available and I was so turned off by the analog signal that I dropped the hobby. I'd rather not fly than fly analog. I gave FPV another try and bought the DJI system a couple of months ago and it made all the difference. Without DJI I wouldn't be in this hobby.

    Aww shucks. You showed my video! :) There's been another flight by another guy that went 8 miles and the video cut out abruptly. So it looks like we have almost exactly twice the range as before. I'm not sure this is a direct result of going to 50 Mbit. It might just be a coincidence. As you mentioned there's a latency at 4 miles that was not overcome with the old firmware. That may be due to the window (in microseconds) that the system waits for valid data packets. After that it just gives up. I think that the window duration was increased to twice what it was before giving twice the time for the packets to arrive. Remember, this is microseconds. So you still can have latency in the 20 to 30 millisecond range, even at 8 miles, up until it stops accepting packets that are too late.

    Another great video. Thanks Joshua! I personally fly Low Latency mode because it feels much smoother to me. I know "high quality" mode is still supposed to be 60fps, but I do not believe it. Maybe it is 60fps in the best case but it definitely does not hold that rate. To me, "high quality" mode feels more like 30fps or maybe it keeps flipping between 30fps and 60fps. My background is in video game development, and now I do virtual reality research. I know what 60fps looks like, and "high quality" mode isn't it. I love "low latency" mode though. It is smooth and consistent as long as I have clear LOS for the signal. If you have the time and interest, then I think it would be very interesting to see a test to determine the true frame-rate of the two modes. You might have to record the screen using a different camera to see how long each frame is actually displayed in the goggles.

    Flying through bushes and seeing ghost branches or loose armature in concrete garbage is exactly what I wanted. Can't resist anymore, will buy this. A little problem though - my 5" frames have no space even for Vista unit :) Update: Installed Vista unit on my 3" GT-349. Indeed it is something unbelievable in comparing with low resolution analog picture. Some stuttering and pixelation in rare occasions, but overall experience is amazing. No flashing and noise lines anymore.

      @@tecnikturbo Vista is thinner and lighter than DJI Air Unit. I found that with adding a bit of elbow grease is it is possible to mount it into GT-349. From what is known about GT-369, I believe that mounting Vista on it goes in same way. Camera mount width and screw holes are the same too. In fact it is possible to mount even stock DJI Air Unit camera cube - it is much smaller IRL than it looks :) Use one screw at each side for it. Some notes:
      - Two ways how to mount Vista VTX on frame. 1) Use M2 40mm screws. May be hard to found. Or 2) repurpose original FC cover/VTX mount. Cut analog VTX screw mounts off. And tie Vista to this cover with kapton tape (this tape is not elastic and is heat resistant). In assembled form top cover will fix Vista in place. I mounted it exactly like that.
      - Use 12 cm camera cable. 8 cm cable is too long at same side and too short from opposite side. And 14 cm cable is way too long. It is good for 5"+ quads with VTX at back of frame.
      Vista demo from my GT-349. Set viewing quality to 1440p. Jerking occasionally happen due to network lag - video in googles and original recording had no lag at all.

I never liked DJIs Apple like business practices (yeah I’m an Apple user too) but their polishing of their products is pretty damn good and their after purchase support has really made me rethink my original opinions. Plus flying in HD is just awesome. Analog mod and you can still fly your micros. This update is just more proof of their support to keep optimizing the system. Honestly they could have been like, “well they bought it we got their money so whatever they can live with the issues”, but there not. I think it’s great, not perfect, no product is, but digital low latency on a consumer level is very new.

    Bandwidth actually behaves the opposite of what you expect.
    If you have a signal at that is using X watts of power, and that signal is using 20 kHz of bandwidth, it will go further (can be heard easier by it's receiver) than a signal using X watts of power using 80 kHz of bandwidth.
    However, the 80 kHz signal can carry more data at a higher rate, hence better video quality.
    Similarly, in the hobby of Ham Radio, a voice transmission (SSB) uses about 3 kHz of bandwidth. A Morse code transmission only uses about 0.15 kHz of bandwidth.
    At the same power output, the Morse code signal will travel MUCH MUCH further than the voice signal with the drawback of carrying much less information.

    Great review LText: Text JB.
    The range limit 'cliff' is caused by error correction. Once the errors exceed a 'valid data' limit the only way it can recover is to get a clean error free signal to start the process over.
    Error correction makes the long range possible, but it's the achilles heel of digital systems, they can't construct something from too much nothing... for long anyway.

I confirmed this with two air units on different quads. Focus off it was still there, however focus on the stutter is gone. • @Volleyoghurt

    @11:40 you tell about a hard limit. In the radar technology we use the time between the sending signal and received echo divided by 2 to measure the time the signal has travelled. Calculate that with te speed of light and you have the distance. Now If your goggle sending a signal and your air unit receive that signal, put a timestamp on and sending a signal back with that time stamp. They can calculate your distance without GPS. And set distance limit which is tested as a "safe range" . Gladly they removed or put the limit futher away.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  3 года назад

      The limit relates to the timeout of the acknowledgement window. If a data packet is not acknowledged within a certain time, it is retransmitted. If the latency of the link exceeds that time, data cannot be acknowledged and the link fails.

    Someone on RCG with a proper spectrum analyzer showed that the DJI channels are not a rounded lump that bleeds all the way to the edge of the band. They are actually a pretty sharply edged vertical pillar with little lumps on either side in the lower part of the band, but very clean on the upper end. Yes the 50Mbit channels are about double width, and will step on closest adjacent analog channels, but not as bad as the analog analyzers suggest. pics here. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=44976421&postcount=7433
    All those long range flights were done in 50Mbit HQ mode. Nobody has tested 25Mbit for max range yet.
    And they didn't remove the range limit. Latest tests indicate that it was doubled, then it cuts out same as it did before.
    One other thing in this update that wasn't documented. The DVR recording bitrate was also more than doubled and it's entirely variable. Before the update, DVR would max out around 22Mbit/s. After the update it averages around 38-44Mbit/s for high detail, high motion and I've seen peaks as high as 65Mbit/s. This is true whether the goggles are in 50Mbit or 25Mbit transmission mode.

      I hope Bardwell sees this. Not only does this show the bandwith in better detail, he was also trying to figure out why the 50Mbps mode wasn't getting as much range and these screenshots show that too, the 25mbps mode is putting out more power than the 50mbps mode. It's because, for a single transmitter, it won't be able to put out as much transmit power at a higher bandwith as it can at lower bandwidth.
      If you watch a occusync DJI camera drone on a spectrum analyzer as you switch it between 20mbps and 10mbps modes you'll see the same jump in power going to 10mbps. You can also see this if you leave it on automatic mode, it will switch to 10mbps mode as you fly it farther away and back to 20mbps when you fly close to yourself.

    • @daemn42
      @daemn42 4 года назад

      @@TimBass My own tests don't back up the assertion that 50Mbit mode is using less power. Also his range didn't increase, but it didn't decrease either. Video quality was about the same flying down that road out of LOS, which you'd expect if you double the bitrate, *and* double the bandwidth.

    • @TimBass
      @TimBass 4 года назад

Different power settings, heating up and dropping to low power mode, or not a consistent distance between tx antennas and the receiving antenna on the analyzer. I wouldn't read too much into it. If you are getting a sdcard too slow error you need to check the actual speed of your card. If you thought battery manufacturers exaggerate about C rates the sdcard makers passed them at warp 8 years ago. That’s even before you get to counterfeits and rebadging 4th shift cards. Download a program like sdspeed (OS X) or h2testw (win) and run all your cards thru them. When buying just ignore any speed numbers, or at best halve them and buy from a place you can easily return them. You can’t even rely on anything, the counterfeiters have gotten so good the only way is to test them. Even big box stores get duped, you have no chance by looking at them or price. You can pay a premium and still get a fake.
    At 50mbps it’s even more critical, you are really reaching for ultra hi end cards to consistently match that speed. And they will degrade over time so what was fine 6 months ago may not be fine now. DJI can’t make a firmware that will fix a shitty sdcard. Sandisk, Samsung, Lexar or Kingston, the names mean nothing. You won’t know until you get it home and test it.

As far as the rf signal between the radios is concerned, if you double the bandwidth, you half the power density & vice versa if you halve the bandwidth, you double the power density. In Amateur radio it's the same as running analog fm narrow/ wide. 12.5k versus 6.25k. Less data can pass through the more narrow signal, but it's also much less likely to suffer any signal fade "in range" around trees leaves and what not thanks to increased signal density, yet with wide band you can see more data, the twigs you are flying around, yet more prone to signal picketfencing, polarity shifts & whatnot. There's always a trade off, in pretty much everything. Love the fly!

    Hey Joshua. For a few years now I've been hoping someone would make an ePTZ FPV system. I remember seeing one after a lot of searching but I can't remember what it was now. Essentially you have an ultra wide camera with no physical pan and tilt mechanism. The full camera feed is broadcast down to the headset and the head tracking system pans the feed in software. I can't believe this still isn't a thing so I'm starting to be vocal in the hope that some manufacturer will pick up the idea and run with it. Not such a requirement with racing drones because you can effectively do all the panning and tilting with your main controls, but for a plane or a car it's a different matter. Reduced weight, complexity, size and lag. So many good reasons for this to happen!

    Hey. 2X Bandwidth needs 2X power. The only way to get more range would be to concentrate all the power in a narrower lower bandwidth channel. * However, that is a simplistic truth because DJI seems to dynamically adjusts the link modulation (and video compression to match). So it is questionable if doing the opposite, adding a 12Mbps (forced narrow channel) would help extend range at near minimum bitrates ~1.5Mbps. If it's possible, maybe someday DJI will add a long-range failsafe "safe"-er? mode. LOL

Now, you can still use analog, but there are 3 digital systems (HD Zero, Walksnail, DJI FPV) out right now with another DJI system coming soon (the new goggles are already out, but the vtx has been delayed). So don't use this old video as your only source of info.
      If you like DJIs system in this video, you should at least consider Walksnail's system. They have a number of similarities with DJI's system. And after some firmware updates, they improved from their initial (buggy) release.

It takes light 21.6r nanoseconds to travel 6.5 kilometers at 299792458 meters per second. So I'm guessing there is a 43ns/44ns round trip limit on firmware v01.00.05.00 and below and a 86ns/88ns on v01.00.06.00 and above. I can't think of a technical reason why such a limit would be imposed so hopefully it will be further derestricted in future either with official or 3rd party firmware updates. Yes I believe 3rd party updates will come and someone out there has been tinkering and reverse engineering. If DJI continue to refuse to add features like live audio this will further drive the need for 3rd party modification.
