Hey Dustin, I just checked out your initial Avata 2 video- did you ever figure out the recording issues and did you ever hear from DJI ? Excellent job as usual, thx!
You need to have easy acro on before recording. Even with an update, recording live view (view through goggle front cameras is hit and miss when you switch. Updates will solve the issues according to DJI but not sure when 🍻
Love your range tests! I would be very interested in seeing how far the air 3 goes when used with the goggles 3. Because of the air 3s longer battery you should be able to get a good idea of the actual maximum range of the goggles.
@@JoshuaHarrell-bk8dz 51 here and out of fear, i had my avata in the box for 15 mths! Just got it out yesterday and its fun! Almost lost it though, as it ran out of batteries. So definately a learning process! This test shows how the avata 2 only has 25% more battery power, from my equations. It says it could last 13km if using the low camera 1080 resolution. As you said you used 4k. So it only did 7km imo, but has the potential to do 13km which is crazy
@@nialtubby I'm so glad you got it back! I had the best time for 4 days straight after getting my Avata 2 fly more, I'm in the country and have tons of land, it's amazing. I crashed the 4th day and am hoping they stand by the refresh I bought as I can't afford to spend $1,307 for four days of flying. lol fingers crossed and happy flying to you!
For a safe way of finding your avata 2 if you don’t make it home, just hook up your phone with the dji fly app, to your goggles. It will give you the gps position of where your drone has landed to a very close proximity.
Plowed mine perfectly into a tree right on the camera… Cracked the one camera mount off… They’re like the size of a paper clip. Sent it in to DJI, and had a whole new drone stat! As soon as mine was in the mail, they had mine shipped… Great customer care!
Dude, a MILE! I love mine so far, just got it yesterday. First drone and I can't express enough how easy it is to control for a first timer. I don't know what to compare it to but I am extremely impressed with all of the options and tech with this drone. Its great. Yesterday, I went out back about a quarter mile. Easy, no issue. Tonight I did the same, saw some deer feeding and it lost signal suddenly. Not sure why, could have been a random connection thing. But other than that, its been beyond great.
Thanks for the video man! I just got an Avata2 and loving it so far. The way you describe losing a drone hit me hard. I lost an analog video racing quad while flying over a lake once - went around a rocky point and my video went to fuzz. The feeling is indescribable.
Got my Avata 2 based in part on your review. Absolutely love it! I’ve crashed it 3 times since I started flying it early today, no damage at all so far! Two were just bushes/landed in the grass but the other was a solid fall from clipping the top of a 20+ft tree! It tumbled through the branches and was just sitting at the bottom . I used the Find my Drone feature and was back up and running in just a few minutes. That motion controller sure is easy to pick up, learning all the buttons and where options are hiding in interfaces, is a whole different ball game.
I've been flying stuff for about a decade, never usually a fan of FPV. Always preferred line of sight. However, I recently started putting together a couple of planes with Ardupilot. I like being able to set a waypoint mission, then just observe it via the video. It was actually thanks to my DJI Mini SE that tickled the interest in FPV more.
Definitely the most exciting drone video that I’ve seen yet. I bought my Avata 2 with goggles and controller etc…about two weeks ago. Just before that I bought the Mini 4 Pro with the RC2. I’ve flown the Mini and LOVED it. Lately I’ve been learning about the Avata 2 and the goggles, watching videos and lining up my settings. By the way, watch out for updates. They can change settings back to defaults. In a recent video as of 5/8/24, one flyer described how an update resetted the default recording setting to Goggles only (why would a developer do this?). So after you experience an update, make sure the camera recording setting is set to “both” so that the goggles are recording AND the drone is also recording. You want that 4k footage! Happy droning, and thanks for this video. Seeing your drone losing power while forty feet up next to the top of the pine tree was nerve wracking to watch, let alone experience it as the owner of the drone. Last note: I will definitely be buying that little tracker that you suggested…make that two of them!
going from a mini to this was such a crazy change, you can fly nice and low and fast and it feels so comfortable with that motion controller. ive been ripping down logging roads up the local mountains and when connection starts to lose you just pull up. i live in british columbia for context its extremely dense forest and mountains. fun drone
Another great video Dustin. The one thing DJI needs to fix is the constant beeping when RTH is active. I'm flying the dang thing I know its RTH I don't need the beeping. 🤣
I have to give you credit for being able to fly and talk at the same time. I tried to record narration yesterday flying my Avata and ended up having 10 mins of silence...I was so concentrated on flying I forgot to talk...lolol
Wow, this was an intense range test! It was a close call at the end, but you managed to fly the Avata 2 way further than I expected. Those pebblebee trackers are a great idea for long range flights. I learned a lot from your mistakes, especially about using sports mode for the return flight. Thanks for sharing bro
Dustin says "congrats..you won the raffle".... "here's the GPS coordinates and a ladder" lol Well, if I don't win the raffle, I'm definitely going to buy this thing! Thanks for the awesome video.
What I would really like to see is a video about someone that has flown the avata 2 with the goggles and controller 3 and then fly the same avata 2 with the goggles and controller 2. This would be to see if there is any difference in the performance of the aircraft alone while using either set of goggles and controllers.
Great video Dustin and thanks for pushing the limits so we can all learn the extent of how far these things can reach! Wow, over 2 miles is impressive. Your point on learning HOW to and WHERE to ditch should be a must learn for all drone pilots. I had a major scare/lesson this past weekend taking my little Avata2 deep into secluded mountains (no cell signal out there but yes to satellite). Anyways, my buddy and I decided to fly this over a river valley (we're on a remote logging road on one side at elevation), flew it across the other side into some rough terrain (we're talking animal and atv trails rarely seen/used). Ofcourse newbie me decides to fly lower while in sport mode to check out the bush/tree tops and after confidently navigating between some large pines, down it goes unexpectedly into a bush when it clipped the top. I thought it was a goner but with some footage on my headset to review, we attempted a rescue mission. We hiked in heat over 2+km uphill in rough terrain to attempt to find it. Thankfully I had it recording on both devices (A MUST!) and we kept reviewing the footage of the last few frames like 40x until we narrowed down several potential bushes in the vicinity. Tried the chirp call function but the battery was long dead by the time we reached it hours later in the hike (had to come down mountain on one side and cross to the other side). By the grace of God, I found my prop guard first, then after another 15 mins found the drone relatively unscathed stuck at the bottom of bushes. Your idea of having a bluetooth loud tag with lights is a must purchase for me now. Do you have links of the Android tag? Much thanks!
What an amazing flight test. Besides that wind, it did very well in Normal & Sport mode. I also entered the contest for the Avata 2 package. Excellent flight tests Dustin & looking forward to the next video!! 😊
its crazy how you got further in sport mode while having the rth to takeover and still left with 16 % battery to do 4 power loops in the yard xD Not bad at all. 4km range is good.
Thanks for range test and link to the self powered beeper. Home flight area is hilly and heavily forested. Real variable signal strength due to the obstructions. Still impressed with the Avata 2 ability to penetrate through the obstructions relative to my older analog hardware. So far, the MC3 has made flying relaxing. Only one crash and one broken propeller after 20 flights. Fraction of the "usual" number of crashes and broken propellers. Have a bunch of M76 2mm T mount propellers that look identical to the stock DJI Avata 2 propellers. Only issue are the spacing of the 2mm mounting holes. Fraction of a mm wider than std MT76 propellers. DJI props and the first bunch of non-OME that hit the market are a bit on the relatively pricey side. The plus is not breaking, chipping, dinging propellers as frequent.
The rocking motion you see during the RTH is not due to winds... It's the inherent funny nature of the algorithms in the drone. DJI is working on it to get a fix.
Great video. Thank you! After watching lots of videos, yours made me finally decide on the Avata 2. Also, great idea on the tracker. I'll for sure get one. Just one suggestion. When you are on low battery, try to decrease playing with the camera angle. All that camera operation and stabilization takes energy and decreases the aerodynamic profile of the drone.
Great range tests. I was surprised how well the battery held up in the Sport Mode run. I agree max efficiency for the Avata 2 is around 26 mph. DJI seems to have already established the most efficient speed for each model & sets it as the RTH speed. When you did the recovery on the Normal Mode test I was hoping you would spot the missing Mini 4 Pro. :)
Man! Just don’t know if I could EVER do that! I stress enough when it’s out of line of sight! Whoa! Just seeing the visuals these drones give us when flying, you near literally ARE THERE when you lose your buddy! Glad you found it. Wheewww..close compared to what I saw in your Mini 4 loss!
Your house is amazing. What do you do for a living. Im really thinking of picking one of these up. I used to race fpv and freestyle back a few years ago but I don't have the time anymore. This seems like a perfect low maintenance alternative.
I'm impressed with the 04 signal strength and the features especially the feature where it flew itself out of the tree. Not going to ever fly that far, but the signal would be strong enough to go around objects. I glad I didn't buy the Avata1. Good video!
This is a fascinating video. I for one appreciate you making it. I just purchased an Avata 2 fly more kit yesterday. Arriving in 1-2 weeks. I'm devoring all RUclips content I can find and your video is a standout. Thanks again. It's a sub from me.
This was my very first drone and I did come from RC planes and then 3-D helicopters so I have some decent flight experience and so far my 10 year-old son and I have gone through nine batteries together and I think I’m going to have to buy another one for him, but I couldn’t agree more that this is by far the best FPV drone and maybe even the best drone to buy for a beginner or even moderate expert for just an all-around fun to fly toy/whatever you want to use it for drone. I bought the controller also and I charged it and I have yet to even screw the sticks on or turn it on because we have only flown it with the motion controller, which is absolutely a blast And does make it so easy that I think almost anybody could fly this drone and get pretty good at it pretty quick or at least good enough to not crash it all over the place because it is so intuitive. Thanks for the range Check because I was kind of wondering how far it could go because even though I have DJI Care refresh, I wasn’t interested in risking a fly away in my first week.
If you like fpv and want to ger into it avata 2 is good and Close up shots for real estate or other stuff avata is for you but if you want a drone with tracking a bunch of features good for family and stuff and better camera and better range and low light mavic is for you I personally would choose the mavic 3

Dustin, great to see you are still putting out such informative and nicely put together drone videos! I've been gone from the hobby for awhile but had been watching you back in 2018...? I think..? Anyway, I hit the bell icon and will be looking out for more great videos
My dream Avata OMG. I'm smiling and imagining that my mouse is the controller HAHA. Hope to have one one day. Sending love from the Philippines. New Subscriber here
Thanks for the video . I’m 60 and my first drone was the Avata in November. I just crashed and broke it. Just shipped it back under warranty. Hopefully I get it back. Do you think the Avata 2 is a lot better than the Avata?
Great test! I remember when you lost the Mini 4, maybe you could use the Avata 2 to look for it. Its a lot more nimble than the Mavic 3 and with head tracking might give you better search capabilities. Its been out there for a while so who knows, might be in bad shape at this point. Anyway, good idea on the tracker, considering getting one of these.
Killer drone I'm going to get one myself. But man do you live in a beautiful area . Seriously I'd love to be out there riding driving and flying a drone .
question: if you are in the US, has the FAA contacted you about the beyond visual line of sight thing? Love the videos, but how have you not got a letter?
Very interesting that you were able to reach about the same flight distance both in Sport and Normal mode. You could of tried out the Real View PIP feature to look for the RTH button. Always enjoy your range tests. Those BT trackers look like a great idea. Thank you !
Unfortunately going into live view seems to possibly stop goggle recording so I'm hesitant when needing the recorded video but yes in a normal situation that is a good idea 🍻
Great Video, Just one thing that's bothering me, is that you leaving your goggles facing the sun, when you have them sitting down, if the sun hits those lenses it will burn out the screens ( I'm sure you know this) but its making me want to grab them and move them lol

Compared to your Avata 1 range test video from the same location. Things to note: Sport mode can achieve same range as Normal mode, Avata 2 seems to have similar transmission range as Avata 1 but can go slightly farther due to longer battery life, Avata 2 battery life seems to match max transmission distance well in average green environment AVATA 1 - Normal 11297ft / 2.14mi / 3.44km 48% battery 7;27 min RC 4 of 4 HD 3 of 4 @ 28Mbps 17.8 MPH out 17.8 MPH in (manual) / 11 MPH below 9% batt AVATA 2 - Normal 13646ft / 2.58mi / 4.16km 49% battery 9;28 min RC 1 of 4 HD 1 of 4 @ 1Mbps 17.8 MPH out 17.8 MPH in (manual) / auto land below 7% AVATA 2 - Sport 13945ft / 2.64mi / 4.25km 53% battery 5;00 min RC 3 of 4 HD 2 of 4 @ 6Mbps 35 MPH out 27 MPH in (auto)
Great range test 👍 Did you know that you can track the last GPS position of the drone, when you connect your googles to you smartphone (inside the dji app then go to find my drone)
Well, always be aware of where you are flying and set your RTH accordingly. You can set your return altitude or set to hover in place when it loses connection. If you were flying low in a forest you probably don't' want it to ascend straight up in auto RTH.
Just to correct a piece of information: it's actually not the orange button to cancel the auto return to home timer, it's still the mode button to cancel that timer. You pressed the orange button during the first test, that's why the drone suddenly braked.
@@DustinDunnill the orange button will just pause the drone and stop the drone from moving, as shown in the video. If you press the mode button the drone will cancel the RTH and keep flying.
Hope you guys are enjoying this great test!

I first bought the Dji mini 2 se, and now I'm undecided between the Avata 2 and the Mavic 3 classic. which one do you recommend? 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
If you like fpv and want to ger into it avata 2 is good and Close up shots for real estate or other stuff avata is for you but if you want a drone with tracking a bunch of features good for family and stuff and better camera and better range and low light mavic is for you I personally would choose the mavic 3

Nice video and we get some real world testing knowledge from you. Thank you for sharing!
Finally!!! Long awaited video of the year😊😊😊👍👍💪
👍I love the range tests
I know how you feel I've lost 3 DJI drones your hart sinks you would think I would learn my lesson but I keep pushing the limits 👍
Dustin, great to see you are still putting out such informative and nicely put together drone videos! I've been gone from the hobby for awhile but had been watching you back in 2018...? I think..? Anyway, I hit the bell icon and will be looking out for more great videos
Looking to get one these bad boys once have the funds... coming from og mavic air had since 2018.. be my first fpv.. cant wait!!!
My dream Avata OMG. I'm smiling and imagining that my mouse is the controller HAHA. Hope to have one one day. Sending love from the Philippines. New Subscriber here
Thanks for all you do, now I just have to get one!
Great video! Can you bypass that beeping???
Great video Dustin! Curious..what state are you in? It looks so dry...
Thanks for the video . I’m 60 and my first drone was the Avata in November. I just crashed and broke it. Just shipped it back under warranty. Hopefully I get it back. Do you think the Avata 2 is a lot better than the Avata?
I think so. Much more nimble with better tech all the way around 🍻
Thanks Dustin for sharing. I’m realliy getting excited about getting this drone
Damnit I'm 50 and I'm going to have to buy one huh? Thanks for the video, and I'm jealous of your land.
Great range test! Thank you! Any idea what the max wind speed was during your flights that day?
Seemed to gust up to 15mph at maximum. Quite variable though 🍻
Killer drone I'm going to get one myself. But man do you live in a beautiful area . Seriously I'd love to be out there riding driving and flying a drone .
Great video. Great Channel. Congrats. All the best.
question: if you are in the US, has the FAA contacted you about the beyond visual line of sight thing? Love the videos, but how have you not got a letter?
Great video. Looking to buy an Avata 2 and this video made my mind up.
awesome video bro, I can't wait to buy this one... saving money for it.
Nice range test playa, great way to push it to the limit as always! Really enjoy your vids they're entertaining and informative, keep them coming!
Et aussi la batterie jusqu'à zéro . La on est sur un vrai test de portée. On clic pas sur ta vidéo pour rien t'es le meilleur sur les range tests 👍❤❤❤
It's a heart breaking moment :) we all kinda felt it sometime in life :)
Great Video, Just one thing that's bothering me, is that you leaving your goggles facing the sun, when you have them sitting down, if the sun hits those lenses it will burn out the screens ( I'm sure you know this) but its making me want to grab them and move them lol
Sun was overhead and I thought I had lenses facing sideways
I can't wait to get one! I am waiting for the raffle first! God Bless!
You know, when you started the landing 2 miles out, it out got your heart going! 😂
Better cancel rth, and bring back home with sport mode? Btw nice videos , thats awesome beeper you have😁🙏👏
Hello my friend. 👍❤❤❤
good tips - kudos for you testing this stuff with your own drones to share with others - cheers
You can also double-click on the right hand side of the headset to give you a view of your surroundings/look at the controller.
Can you change the RTH altitude while in flight? I will try this weekend. Great video.
nice video, thank you, where is this Montana?
The video is very good, but I'm curious how you attached the Pebblebee to the drone...
3M double sided tape 🍻
Compared to your Avata 1 range test video from the same location. Things to note: Sport mode can achieve same range as Normal mode, Avata 2 seems to have similar transmission range as Avata 1 but can go slightly farther due to longer battery life, Avata 2 battery life seems to match max transmission distance well in average green environment
AVATA 1 - Normal
11297ft / 2.14mi / 3.44km
48% battery
7;27 min
RC 4 of 4
HD 3 of 4 @ 28Mbps
17.8 MPH out
17.8 MPH in (manual) / 11 MPH below 9% batt
AVATA 2 - Normal
13646ft / 2.58mi / 4.16km
49% battery
9;28 min
RC 1 of 4
HD 1 of 4 @ 1Mbps
17.8 MPH out
17.8 MPH in (manual) / auto land below 7%
AVATA 2 - Sport
13945ft / 2.64mi / 4.25km
53% battery
5;00 min
RC 3 of 4
HD 2 of 4 @ 6Mbps
35 MPH out
27 MPH in (auto)
So awesome, that must be absolutely incredible.
Great range test 👍 Did you know that you can track the last GPS position of the drone, when you connect your googles to you smartphone (inside the dji app then go to find my drone)
Yep 👍
Everything I need to know about avatar2 is here, thank you. Can you give me more information about the removable GPS mounted on avatar2?
It's a Bluetooth tracker. Linked in description. Seems to work perfectly within about 100ft 🍻
Nice job! so you should let your avata RTH by himself whenever it show low battery. Thanks for your efforts 😊
Well, always be aware of where you are flying and set your RTH accordingly. You can set your return altitude or set to hover in place when it loses connection. If you were flying low in a forest you probably don't' want it to ascend straight up in auto RTH.
It's safest to yes. Now if it was completely calm with no wind I think another 5-10% would have been possible 🍻
Amazing video. Thank you very much. Keep pushing it.
Can’t wait for my first flight tomorrow! 🤙🏼
Great video and tutorial Dustin. 😊
great review, gets some protection on the plastic !
Just to correct a piece of information: it's actually not the orange button to cancel the auto return to home timer, it's still the mode button to cancel that timer. You pressed the orange button during the first test, that's why the drone suddenly braked.
You can press the orange button to cancel. Done it many times in the previous flight review
@@DustinDunnill the orange button will just pause the drone and stop the drone from moving, as shown in the video. If you press the mode button the drone will cancel the RTH and keep flying.
Once it initiates RTH the orange button will also just cancel it and you can continue flying but I see your point 🍻
Love from India brother ❤😊
The OG King of range tests 🤙🤙🤙!!
Dustin good afternoon can you do a video of the air tags on the drone for recover thank you have a blessed day..
That Owl with solar is amazing. Where can i get one of these?
The best at long range testing!
