How to Paint Sunrays

i was just looking to paint sun rays on my sunset painting, so i typed it in to youtube... and here you are!
thank you for your very helpfull tips.
im going straight out to the studio to do the sun rays right now!!!

If I wanted to do this but using colors like purples or blues do you think it would work? I want to paint an aura n have the same transparent look but with hints of color? If not how would I do it? I'm using oil paints, plz anyone have any ideas???

I know this is a really old video but maybe someone watching can answer this for me: Can this technique be used to form a kind of glow around a sun? Will the paint thinner work as well or would water do the trick? Thanks!
