    Hello, Hello! This is the second (and final for now) video attempting to tell and unpack the wild life of Demi Lovato. From 2010, they've become a spokesperson for sobriety, released countless hit songs, relapsed, and gotten into all of the twitter drama possible. In fact, so much has happened that I'm sure I've left things out. So feel free to add your favorite Demi story I missed below. Just remember, they do use they/them pronouns and while some of their goofs are more harmful than others - we can all be kind and accepting of their gender identity. Thank you all for watching and hope you enjoy.

    There was an interview from the time when they were touring with Nick Jonas where the interviewer asks them both what was the last thing that they googled. Nick says that he had goggled how many calories are in orange juice, and Demi says something like "wow that is the most hollywood thing to google", and Nick replies "no, that is the most diabetic thing I could've googled." I don't know if anyone else remembers this, but hearing the yogurt controversy reminded me of this because it is basically the same thing. Like they perceive any situation where people cut out certain foods as immediately being about diet culture and EDs, and can't seem to understand that sometimes it has to do with health reasons or just personal preferences even.

    • @LilyLewis771
      @LilyLewis771 6 месяцев назад +13

      They keep doing that over and over again. The comments about Zendaya when she was a little girl and later the Barbie doll, the mermaid drawing, Lady Gaga’s performance, the Bad Blood video, the frozen yogurt, etc- like one incident like this, fine, but it’s a constant pattern with Demi that they have to make everything about them/their ED. When none of these things are about that! They’re constantly shaming women’s bodies and calling them ‘not normal’ and at some point we have to stop cutting them slack about it. As someone who’s struggled with an ED that’s absolutely a manifestation of the illness that it feels like *everything* is about that but that’s not an excuse for tearing other people down or making everything about yourself. You still need to recognize when your own behavior is toxic even if you think you have good intentions.

      Bit late but completely agree. Most of my nutrition is via a feeding tube, but I can still manage a little bit to eat and drink by mouth. It means I have to really carefully calculate what I've eaten/drank in terms of calories to account for it when I'm running my formula nutrition so I don't gain too much weight (I needed to gain weight before but now I'm at the weight my dietician wanted me at, so I just need to try to maintain now). I need to also know fat and fibre content in snacks and meals as I have to avoid fat and fibre where possible and eat as much protein as I can as it's easier to digest (lean proteins like chicken and fish anyway, not beef or pork, meat alternatives contain too much fibre unfortunately).

    • @xotbirdox
      @xotbirdox 10 месяцев назад +6

      It's the story of a lot of bullying victims. I have PTSD, depression, and Social Anxiety Disorder from my experience with bullying, on top of the autism and OCD that I was born with. Bullying really messed me up. I self-harmed for two years and had to drop out of school. I used to binge-purge and was treated for that but was never diagnosed with an eating disorder, just disordered eating behaviours. I went to a community centre for two hours a day instead of school to do my GCSEs, and we could only do English and Maths there. i failed both of them. I had therapy twice a week with my country's Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) for two years whilst I was going to the community centre as well. Survived two suicide attempts. I still have nightmares to this day about school. I still worry that my friends secretly hate me. I still have horrible panic attacks when a friend does leave me. I still can't go past my old school or even see a kid I don't know wearing that school uniform in town without my anxiety spiking. I'm 25 now, nobody I knew is still there anymore, but that doesn't matter when you're traumatised. Just seeing the school's logo is enough to send me into a tailspin. People really don't realise how badly bullying can affect someone. My PTSD, depression, and Social Anxiety Disorder is a big part of the reason why I can't work and am on government benefits instead. Bullying should actually be called peer abuse imo. It's one of the leading causes of PTSD, which I was shocked to find out when I got diagnosed. Before I got diagnosed, I just thought I was a wimp. My heart breaks for Demi. I couldn't even imagine having to call any of my bullies.

    One minor correction! The Israel-Palestinian conflict is not "centuries long", it's less than a hundred years old and one of the primary causes was the British empire, as they love to do. That portrayal as this "ancient feud" is meant to make it feel inevitable, and removes accountability for those who are committing atrocities in that corner of the world.
    Edit a year later to clarify: it's not a conflict, it's a coloniser (Israel) occupying land that they invaded 🍉

    I really think Demi has good intentions, she just had a tendency to view herself as the main character a lot of the time, when sometimes she should just let people have their moment. Also, as someone with severe bipolar disorder, I can relate to the grandiose and impulsivity that come with manic episodes….for that reason, I never post ANYTHING without waiting at least 30 minutes and giving myself time to think it through. For that reason, I only post or comment sparingly and have completely abandoned twitter for over 5 years now. I know she’s struggling, but she’s also not THAT naive…she knows her issues and she also knows the power and influence she holds. In my opinion, she’s just not stabilized yet….and hey, neither am I! Bipolar disorder can take a lifetime to stabilize and everyone is different. I wish her the best, but I no longer follow her online because a lot of her posts can be very triggering to me due to various reasons. She’s so unbelievably talented, though. ❤️

    I have sympathy for them, but at the same time, they can't keep using their illness as the scapegoat. I did the same as an angry bulimic pre teen (now 28) and said lots of things I regret. I treated everything as a trigger instead of either confronting or accepting what I cannot change (ex: the dessert shop owner business debacle). The greatest lesson I learned through therapy is learning to cope with way too many triggers. If it weren't for that, I'd probably still be a bitter person angry that people don't see my POV and can't adhere to ~my~ level of comfort (not their fault if they can't).
    Edit: my comment is obviously more geared toward their ED and related outbursts, not substance abuse. I cannot speak on that personally, but either way I wish them peace at some point. I don't think they're a horrible person, they just happen to need extensive help.

      @@pobster88j94 singular “they” has been used consistently as a pronoun since the f’ing 1300s. It was literally only in the 18th century that certain grammarians started deciding that “they” could only ever be plural. Many of those same grammarians used similar arguments to claim singular “you” was also incorrect, so “you” was only used as a plural for a while - though as YOU no doubt know, as I am singularly referring to YOU right now, that eventually fell out of fashion. Kind of like your tired ass joke about they/them pronouns 🙄. If “you” can be singular and plural like it originally was, so can “they”.

      Yeah exactly. Like I understand that eating disorders, mental illnesses and addictions etc. are serious problems, but that doesn’t mean it can be used as an excuse or scapegoat for your actions. They can’t expect everyone to cater to them all the time. Sure they have their struggles, but it’s also their responsibility to do what’s best for them. No one else can or should be expected to fix their struggles, that’s their responsibility to do themselves. If they know they get triggered by things like fan art or photos of models on the internet etc. it’s their responsibility to do whatever they need to do in order to avoid those triggers. If they need to get off the internet, they should do that. They should be mature enough to understand that the entire world can’t change to fit their needs, their recovery is in their hands only and it’s up to them to make the right decisions for their life and no one else’s. I don’t have any personal experiences with eating disorders, but I’ve dealt with other mental health problems and I can say from experience that you will not get better by blaming your problems on mental illness, when you do that you’re just feeding the mental illness and letting it control your life. To heal you need to make the effort to not let it control you anymore and no one but yourself can do that. If you sit and wait for the world around you to do something about your problems you’ll never get better, you need to be responsible and fix yourself instead of expecting others to fix you. And that’s what Demi does wrong. They’re waiting for the world to fix them when what they really need to do is make that effort themselves and do what’s best for them and not let triggers control them.

Demi has been toxic to others many times, and i do understand that it's their own suffering and insecurities that cause this, but still they have the means to get therapy and help for this. • @ellen8695

      What I always understood from it was that there isn't a "normal" body in the sense of a certain body type being considered normal, "standard". Because being skinny is what many consider to be what's normal and having fat is a transgression from the norm, a problem. And most women that are skinny to that degree are not like that because it's their nature, they starve themselves to achieve it. Look at Taylor herself, she talked about her eating disorder. She used to be so unbelievably thin and now that she's in a better place, her body looks much more healthy. I agree Demi shouldn't have said it like that, it seemed rude and destined to misconception, but if that's what they meant, it's not wrong.

    The lady Gaga vomit was for an artistic purpose related to her experience with SA - was not aware before I posted which is completely on me - there is still something to be said about the shock factor but lady gaga was not just employing vomit for no reason, to be clear.
    In 2017, Demi took a 23andme test and found out that they mostly Spanish, Native American, Scandinavian, British, and Irish. They then had a follow up tweet that just said
    "and I'm one percent African!!!!" This combined with their tattoo of Africa (yes the continent) they got after a charity trip to Kenya led to quite the twitter roast. Demi later posted,
    "Just thought it was cool and totally random. Yall are mean af. twitter sucks." Which yes, it does. I think everyone besides Demi has realized twitter is not the best space for them.

As a victim, they know what is good and bad but they have not received the proper training to stand by them beliefs. They should have educated themselves, go to courses, look out for role models that could help them vocalize their thoughts at the proper time with the proper words but instead they remain an (well intentioned) angry, resented victim that is not really helping anybody. I, myself, have stuggled with bulimia on and off from a very very young age (i’m 23 now) and I still remember how proud I was of myself for losing over 20 lbs safely. ED’s have alot to do with control and I had finally felt like my mental health was under control to a point where i was able to drop pounds in a healthy way, rather than purging, laxatives, and skipping meals- i was now eating healthier foods, not binging, and hiking for an hr a day. If she gives up on one (ie, when she gave up on being sober/went “California sober”) she’s given up on the other as well, as the treatments build off the same base skills.

    Just a quick side note! I think you mentioned that the issues in Israel and Palestine are centuries old, when actually the nakba (arabic for catastrophe) began in 1948 when Israel was created and thousands of palestinians were forcibly displaced. It’s a common misconception that this has gone on for centuries, when in reality Palestinian Jews and Muslims coexisted prior to British occupation and the creation of Israel. Don’t mean to be rude by correcting you either, it’s just important to mention in regards to the reason for Palestinian resistance :)

    • @talgordin6966
      @talgordin6966 Год назад +1

      If by “coexisted” you mean that Jews were experiencing antisemitism, yeah, they were “coexisting”. What a twisted way of trying to talk about the conflict. Jews were miserable here before they got independence in their land. They bought lands legally and decided to have a country on their own lands, and only after being attacked by 4 different armies did the Nakba (which is horrible) happened. If you wanna talk about history and correct her, at least don’t be biased and tell half the story. P.S.- Demi’s only mistake here was that they apologized for visiting a holy site. Many artists come and throw concerts in Israel and it’s only a big deal if you make it a big deal. People all over the world deserve to listen to music and Demi can choose to visit a country without people making them seem like the bad guy for it.
      P.S.S. Palestinian resistance is in the shape of terror against civilians. Calling terrorism resistance is a terrible look.

    After the froyo thing & after they came out as non binary, it's rare to find a video about Demi where
    1) their pronouns are respected
    2) their issues are being talked about with understanding and patience
    So I thank you for that and I really wish all creators that decide to talk about Demi do so in the same respectful/considerate way you did here.
    I've been a Lovatic forever (for 14 years now lol, grew up with them), I love them so much AND I think there are many things wrong with their personality.
    It feels like I've known them for so long, their good parts AND their awful ones. Part of being a fan of someone for REAL is acknowledging when they mess up, analyse their harmful attitudes and know that they CAN do and SHOULD do better next time. Because people grow and learn.
    Although people want famous artists to do things right without ever making several mistakes apparently...
    Demi has grown up publicly and not only that, they are the kind of person that likes to speak their mind. Which is one thing. Another thing, is when they speak without really taking the time to think things through. And that's Demi's main problem.
    They rarely set (or even see) boundaries, they take everything to the extremes and they're not used to do some balance and live a life with tranquility and light, controllable emotions. It seems that they don't know who they are without excesses, without putting their whole heart and mind in absolutely every step they take. My bet is their loved ones aren't able to support them and guide them in the way that they so desperately need, and I'm not saying their family should do everything for them, but their family has been SO enabling and bland towards them and it seems also that Demi hasn't found the right therapists YET.
    It hurts my soul because it seems that Demi is CONSTANTLY throwing their soul onto something (or some relationship), losing themselves. They've never been in control of their own self. It's scary, dangerous and concerning.
    Their personality annoys me many times. They're not someone I'd say 'oh I'd like to be friends with' BUT STILL I love them so much that words can't explain (because loving someone doesn't necessarily mean you'd want to be friends with them), love them genuinely and when you love someone, sometimes it's not a matter of liking their personality anymore but a matter of looking after them, being excited when they're doing something they're proud of, supporting their journeys, their accomplishments, wishing the best to them, being by their side...
    So no, Demi is not someone easy to deal with. But is someone WORTH LOVING.
    It's worth hoping their better days will come, worth understanding, it's worth defending them from people who judge their mistakes as if they comitted the worst crimes in the world, when they have clearly done more good than harm...
    They've been a trailblazer. In speaking up for uncomfortable, awful things. In encouraging so many people and leaders to prioritise mental health and prioritise trying to understand the dark, heavy, sharp things that most society avoids acknowledging.
    Demi might be an example that being humans consists in the f*cked up, difficult thing' and not only the 'glow up', 'doing great' part. Do they take it to the extremes? Yes. Do they need to work on the way they perceive things? Yes. But SOMEONE had to pave the raw way to break society's rules of being silent and hiding the uncomfortable, hurtful stuff. Their contribution to mental health specially in young people is massive and undenniable.
    And of course, when they're not messing up, they're a LOVELY person, so talented, funny, unique, smart, loving, helpful, creative, unforgettable.
    LOVED the video! Such a great work and admirable approach. I'm definitely subscribing.

      Their pronouns aren't respected because they were announced as a way to push aside the froyo drama. No one decides they're nonbinary all of a sudden right after a controversy. If their pronouns are REAL, they should have waited until the controversy was long forgotten instead of "coming out" as a distraction.

    • @MilaBelen
      @MilaBelen 2 года назад +15

      @@Nakia11798 So coming out has to be planned? You know all the NB people in the world to conclude that all of them came out at a time that wasn't controversial in their lives? Besides Demi being the messy person that they've been, has been constantly in controversies so it's not like they could have ever came out at a 'good' time... If their intention was to come out as a 'distraction' it doesn't make sense, 'cause it made things worse.
      They'd been clearly keeping in secret for months that they identify as non binary and it just came to a point where they couldn't hide it anymore, besides being comfortable with one's lgbtq+ identity takes time (it happened to me too), it's such a fragile thing that someone else saying 'you should've come out before or after' is unfair. To me they just felt the emotional release after the album came out and felt free enough then (coinciding with the podcast -a podcast is made to express oneself openly...) to vocalize their NB identity journey.

What you said in that section implies that you don’t have much experience with substance abuse and the sobriety journey. The abstinence only model is not the sole way to get sober and while Demi’s “California sober” comments were not in great taste, AA doesn’t work for everyone and treating abstinence only like the sole legitimate option doesn’t help those people.

That’s beyond dramatic and a hyperbole. Demi is way too open and comfortable being open . Demi knows the relationship they have with their fans , and the impact demi has on them and chooses to share things because they know they’re not the only one going through shit because fans always hit Demi up and stop Demi to tell them how much they’ve helped them handle issues in their own lives , demi absolutely does not have a victim mentality . Demi chooses to be an example, for better and worse , and is never scared to own up to their shit . You’re just not comfortable with celebss being human, and it shows . You’re dramatic and trying to paint a braid brush for a human being who’s capable of being wrong . Except Demi always apologized and owns up to when they are in the wrong. Demi has helped and saved thousands and thousands of people with being open about their story. Celebs weren’t open about personal issues until demi started being vocal, idc what anybody says the whole shift of celebs and media talking about mental health and celebs going through stuff only started when Demi started being open. A thing about Taylor, is during her 1989 era, she was deep in an ED. So the “normal” bodies comment just makes me feel so sad cause that’s just, to me, a horrible thing to say to any person without an ED, much less someone with one. Also, about the reasons for bad blood, I’m pretty sure that Katy and Taylor were friends before this, and then Katy poached Taylor’s backup dancers. This isn’t like, a crime, but imagine you’re deep in an ED and a friend basically takes your employees and you’re scrambling to find new ones. I mean, this situation isn’t the best thing, but also, Katy and Taylor, lol it’s weird saying their first names, have kinda gotten into each others good graces again, so it was never really a big deal if they were able to move past that. I really didn’t think that Demi’s points were at all good regarding Taylor swift and just wanted to give a little context to the song. It’s probably not necessary to put this here, but just wanted to put my two cents here. 😊 everyone have a great day!!!!

In the dancing with the devil documentary their mom mentions that it was difficult to feel as though they could say anything to Demi considering they were the bread winner. Demi also discloses in the Dancing with the devil documentary that they are a master manipulator and liar which led into the conversation of making everyone believe they were sober and advocating for others’ sobriety while simultaneously using substances without many knowing. Their friends even say that they didn’t know that that they had relapsed until they had overdosed. There are a lot of layers to Demi’s drug use but it is wrong to want to point fingers at somebody in particular.

    I feel like Demi’s idea that women cannot argue or disagree or even have beef is less feminist than taylor having a dramatized narrative music video with a spy lady training camp to help her get revenge (or even what the video can be boiled down to: women fighting). Yes, she may have been inspired by whatever the song referred to, but it’s bizarre that people interpret a video that is clearly styluses using references to spy and thriller movies to be a somewhat literal interpretation of how she saw the situation. Besides, the song being about Katy and the backup dancers was just speculation lol
    There was definitely a feud between them, probably initially about the backup dancer thing, but id argue that the feud really started when the media and gp speculated the song and video were about Katy. I’m a fan of Taylor’s, but she has so many songs about people betraying her or wanting revenge that it seems silly to think the only person it could be about is Katy lol (the fact that she has so many songs like that is a topic for another day hahaha)
    Edit: i agree that bad blood is a flop though lol
