Today is a blast from the past, at least for me. We're talking about the Peter Pandom (very much inspired by Jenny Nicholson). Another thing I want reemphasize for the folks who are reading this description, although these posts from 10+ years ago are certainly goofy, I'm sure many if not all of these people have grown and reevaluated and they deserve that grace. As another tumblr teen I'm certainly not one to talk.

@@dragonfire7965 I used to work at a zoo that had peacocks walking around. A lot of times they would fly on top of buildings and hang out there. One time though one of the peacocks jumped up and pushed a toddler over with its feet. It was kinda funny to watch happen ngl. A peacock can defend itself pretty well

I love seeing people interact with characters but when they stalk them or start treating them like THEY ARE the character and that they’re friends… ugh.

OK there is nothing quirky or cute about harrassing a character actor doing his job. I feel bad for the guys who had to put up with this constant harrassment. People will say there were just being cringy teens but teens are old enough to know you treat workers with respect, they didn't consent to be part of their bizzare fantasy role play kink.
bro same the clips of the ppl literally RUNNING after peter as he tries to get away from them is incredibly uncomfortable. i definitely think there being a community of people encouraging in-park stalking definitely had an influence on people thinking it was ok. Teenagers are so vulnerable to groupthink and there was a LOT of it on tumblr. incredibly icky.

There used to be videos of this other girl who just followed him literally everywhere. Someone was filming as she did it. He literally ignored her but she followed him until he went on break.
If you can believe it, this girl now WORKS there, as a character host. So she's now the person who gets to "officially" follow them around.
Worst part is, she's not the only person I know of who was specific character obsessed who then got a job there specifically to be able to do that.

I have a relative who worked at Disney Japan as a stage performer for several years. Because he had blond curly hair and blue eyes, a lot of local Japanese girls became fans and formed a following.
Even though he never posted online his work at Disney or his performing schedule, a group of girls would show up almost daily just for the chance to catch one of his performances. They even started leaving him gifts and sending fan art. At this point they knew his name, so he didn’t have a nickname for people to refer to him by like they did with the Disneyland Peter.
He found out later that the cast members who worked the costumes department were the ones posting his real name and his performance schedules online (VERY against the rules)
So yeah, Disney fans can be wild! 🤗
I hope those cast members were fired

Somebody I used to work with went on to play Peter in Tokyo Disneyland for a few years, he’s also a blonde blue-eyed guy. I can only wonder at what his experiences with guests there were like, I imagine a similar fate probably befell him

I’m either not old enough to remember that, or it happened recently, and I’m not aware of it.
The post 2014 backlash that started the Tumblr Cringe Era really warped our perception of our interactions on the site before 2014. I never had a cringe phase so I see it a little more clearly, but lots of us forgot that we too believed the hype, we thought all those clearly fake posts were real. We were children and our Tumblr presence is a great time capsule to remember what it was like to be in a community of teenagers that were simultaneously huge liars and gullible idiots.

I mean, a culture that encourages stalking and chasing an actor down at his job, or writing fanfiction about real people and sending it to them does deserve shaming, even if it was mostly dumb teenagers that were involved.

I really love that Spieling Peter (or the actor that played him) was actually a pretty decent guy (from what I’ve heard). Even linking self harm hot lines to the self harm post made about it. I hope he’s doing pretty well today.

Not this genuinely unlocking a core Tumblr memory. I only remember seeing spieling pan on my dash back then and I also assumed he'd gotten fired for becoming too famous, but the 'he aged out of the role' like you mentioned does make sense. I am glad the threads of 'what happened to the Peters' ended up being more wholesome than expected.
I was a little too late to Tumblr to witness any of this go down, but being in the Once Upon a Time fandom, I was definitely part of the wave of people who had a crush on Robbie Kay's Peter Pan.

I think the extra draw with Spieling Peter was that the actor was dating a Wendy character actor from the park too. Just tied into the appeal and fantasy.

10:41 I did actually have an experience like this at DisneyLand once. When I was 13-ish? I lost my jacket on one of the rides and I was wearing short sleeves that day, and started crying and freaking out because I had visible self harm scars and I was very self conscious about them. It was near the Maleficent area, and since I was having a meltdown, she stepped over and guided me over to a security guard who found my coat. She didn't even say anything directly to me the whole time other than "we'll find it." When I told her my coat was missing.
She was super nice.
I don't know if I still have the photo I got with her, but it was genuinely a really nice experience, especially since some of the scars were fresh and I was worried how people would react.
I think she did quip something about me not crying, something like "don't cry, child, crying is pointless." Like still in the character vibe but not horrendous or something that would make me cry worse. This was a long time ago, I'm an adult now... Time flies.
I did get a photo once with Spieling Peter, I didn't know he was famous or popular, but I did remember the amount of girls around him kind of odd. I felt uncomfortable that there were girls I didn't know that photographed while I was trying to get a photo with him. It was so weird.
He was nice though. There wasn't much to the interaction, just a quick photo and moved on.
I remember this era of my tumblr too!
But it was really weird for me because I personally know DimplePan - he was my first ever acting coach and is an amazing human being. The stories he'd tell about being friends with Peter were WILD. He was in WDW and eventually he got to be so popular that they sent him to train character actors in other parks.

not a tumblr memory, BUT I was following this girl who posted her poetry on instagram for years, I want to say starting in 2012. she was a disney girlie and absolutely ~obsessed~ with the actor that was friends with peter at Disneyworld for a while (who could blame her?) I LIVED for her updates on going to see him and the photos and videos she would post of them interacting....it was such a random and specific time of my late middle school early high school memory and this video just brought all of that back

What you said about that era of "teen girls watching Dan and Phil and also wanting them to be together" is EXACTLY how I felt back then when the phandom was at its peak, I've never heard it put into words so perfectly. Flirting with cute guys/being flirted with was scary and awkward to me and I really didn't want to be in that situation myself, so seeing it through the lens of a cute guy flirting with another guy instead was so much more palatable. I'm so glad you could finally put words to my cringey teenage feelings :'D
I think it's nice how wholesome a lot of this turned out to be! The peter pan actor being a Tumblr boy himself is just great. Seriously tho, harassment of customer service workers is not cool but I'm glad this turned out to be mostly positive for the actors involved.

I knew nothing about this, but the relationship between Andrew and Halli is adorable and I love that Huggy Peter and that vlogger are friends. I was a big fan of the 2003 Peter Pan film and had the biggest crush on Jeremy Sumpter, so I do understand crushing on the actors who played Peter at Disneyland.
Telling them to go find the treasure and then running away was hilarious and smart. 😂
SpeilPan has Joseph Gordon-Levitt energy, another genuine nice guy that got a massive tumblr following in late 00s/early 10s, i can see a pattern of boyish good-looks and just genuinely sweet personality that mimics a first crush in high school

i remember stumbling upon disney vlogs back in the day and being extremely confused. a lot of the people were so excited the actors remembered them and i was like how many times have you met him ???
Omg, I loved spieling Peter Pan back then, but like not in a sexual way. The way he talked and interacted with the kids and came up with fitting responses fascinated me, as I was rather socially awkward myself and it actually helped me with my babysitting skills 😄✌️ Also he was in a relationship with another cast member since forever and they even won a wedding contest or something because they had such a big following online. This was top notch real life romance for my 15-old single soul 😂🥰 Now they even have two kids and I have a daughter myself who loves my Peter Pan impressions 💚🤓 Keep adventuring and stay not a grown up I guess 😂

Omg I just burst out in tears hearing “to write love on her arms” wow tumblr culture was so toxic. As a healed adult I just cried for the girl that stayed up late at night seeing such toxic things over and over. I just thank God i never took my depression too far. I love anyone who went through that or has had problems with self harm and self hate. It’s not worth it there is a healed version of you watching you feel so bad. Trust me it will get better if you just believe. ❤
i think back to that time in my life and just wonder how i could’ve been in that much pain. thinking about it, i notice that i bet a lot of my pain was exacerbated by the online culture of pro-SH/ED/depression. Not that seeing those things will mean you will become depressed, but as an anxious preteen, it definitely pressured me to not stop. definitely gross, and i’m sad and upset for the young me who wouldn’t have thought she was fat if she never heard those gross songs and prisms quotes

I remember the Pan phenomenon from around 2011 just before I went on the Disney College Program--seeing as Peter Pan is my favorite Disney character, I was most excited to meet him and was lucky enough to do so twice during my program--I worked in merchandise at Hollywood Studios and by far my favorite story was I was ringing up a fellow cast member (as evidenced by his Disney ID) who wore a Peter Pan lanyard clip, which I complimented. This cast member said something as if to hint that he got to hang out with Peter every day, so I asked him, "Are you friends with Peter Pan?" His mom, who was visiting the park with him, replied, "He's REALLY good friends with Peter Pan!" It took everything within me not to have a fan kid moment!
I FORGOT ABOUT THIS... Yep this was a whole era on tumblr, like I unironically saw those pixelated gifs back in the day and thought "dream job honestly". I hope all those actors are alright!!!
i was never in tumblr. all my tumblr knowledge came from facebook page reposts of tumblr posts. i just wanna share that there's a guy who disneybounds a lot and makes tiktoks showing off his fits to the cast members in disney parks and peter pan would always playfully flirt with him. now everyone who follows the guy ships the two together. the pandom is still going strong ig

Ashley thank you for reading my mind. After watching videos on Disney’s Fast Pass from Defunctland, Jenny Nicholson on Star Wars Land and the Evermore. Multiple time people kept talking about cast members even the characters and i remembered Peter Pan. but i remember how odd i felt when people would obsess over the person who played Peter Pan. I appreciate you going over it.

Its very nice to see someone address the Ducote situation, as romantic and sweet as his story with his wife is - all of that obsession always struck me as odd but I also was very obsessed with Pan as a kid and around that same tumblr time. Not face characters mind you, the actual book and movies.
I met Peter Pan when I was 15 because I was also obsessed with him and he was one of my faves as a kid. Like I specially Disneybound as Wendy cause I was like “I didn’t see him as a child let me have this.” There was a line for meeting him rather than just free roaming and a kid accidentally got ahead of me while playing with the rope and Peter addressed him first and his parents were like oh no she’s ahead of us and I was like it’s “OK he can go first” and Peter was like “oh I thought he was your little brother you remind me of Wendy. Do you just want to protect kids like that?” Hearing you talk about how sometimes all the teenagers would cloud over the little kids reminded me of it. I wonder if that was a common thing for that “friend” of Peter Pan to see

Kind of mind blowing that the character actors who have to deal with people in-character all day are also paid minimum wage. That is definitely skilled labour.
Although it does seem like in the end once they left they were all okay with it. But in some of the videos they really do seem a little angry and short with the girls and trying to get them to go away, particularly in the "go find treasure" and "I saw someone who looks like me, I'm gonna have an adventure with them" parts.

Honestly I don’t think this fandom was only teenage girls. Yes most of the teenage girls lived on Tumblr but for the ones who were locals and who physically went to the parks to see Peter often, I think some of those people were 18-30. Because 1) if we know anything about Disney Adults is that they can sometimes be Like That 2) you have to have some kind of money to afford an annual pass and enough free time to be able to go to the parks whenever you can and have a way to get there. Even though many teens can be quite self sufficient I also feel like many teenagers would have to ask their parents to take them to Disney and a parent is not gonna want to do that all the time. Also from the voices of some of these videos, the pitch of their voices sort of sounded more mature to me. But idk. Definitely a fandom run by teenage girls but I think there were definitely 18-30 year olds involved in this
I think the reason people latched onto these Peter Pans is because 1) they found the actor playing Peter hot 2) Peter was a source of comfort in their childhood. Growing up can be really difficult, so latching onto a part of your childhood, especially onto a character who does not want to grow up, and having those characters interact with you and bring you a source of happiness and give you attention made them feel good
I wasn’t deep into the lore of the fandom but I definitely remember going through the spieling Peter tag and reblogging so many posts haha. I watched that keep calm and stay sassy video so many times!

I feel so bad for the poor guys who had to play Peter Pan during this era. Like imagine getting a job at Disney, only to have a bunch of random people making gifsets and flower crown edits of you, and following you around with a camera just to make a Tumblr post. It’s one thing to fangirl over a fictional character, but the actors at Disney are real people. I can’t even imagine what it must have been like.

Eh, I can attest that at least one of the Peters that were big on tumblr (not Andrew or Huggy Pan, I never got involved in the Fandom so I never learned his nickname, I'm not sure if he even got one) isn't that nice of a guy in real life (we were in theater at the same high school at the same time , and we spent a summer working together at a non Disney theme park in our hometown in the entertainment/character section. A lot of people didn't like me then because I was weird even for a theater kid due to my undiagnosed (at the time) autism, but he in particular treated me like shit, at both school and when we were coworkers, stopping just short of actively bullying me. Not surprised he went on to be a Disney cast member, he was always a talented actor and knew how to turn off the emo dick mode and turn it on for the kids, VERY surprised that he was one of the more famous Peter's I was seeing gifs of every single day on my tumblr dash after I left high school, it was annoying and brought up bad memories.)
Memory unlocked omg 😂 it was the GIFs of speiling pans crooked smile and scene wig that made 17 year old me- a girl from Canada with no chance of going to the parks absolutely swoon. I feel bad for him in the clip where he asks the girl to promise to get treasure because he obviously wants space
You should cover the mad hatter fan base. There was a similar fan base for the mad hatter in Disney land with different nicknames as well and people following as them around too.
I keep having to start and stop this video the way those girls keep harassing him makes me so uncomfortable.
I kinda got forced into being part of this and it is still such a strange part of my life. There were a few groups, like Huitzi's group, that would go visit characters who had genuinely become friends with them over years and, for the most part, were just wannabe photographers who tested photography skills on park characters. So one day we all woke up with THOUSANDS of notes on out pictures of Spieling with no explanation cause he quite literally blew up over night. And we were essentially the catalysts of this fandom we wanted NOTHING to do with because everyone was so weird and obsessive that it made US seem weird and obsessive. I am still friends with a lot of these people (Hali included, I was never super close to Andrew) and even then I still feel weird looking back on it because of how wild the fandom got.

Lol I had a crush on him too when I was 6, but then I got more into the lore of Disney Fairies themselves (Tinkerbsll’s friends) and stopped caring about the character of Peter completely. I didn’t get the appeal of the Disney actors since to me they seemed very unappealing, turns out I just liked girls more than guys. (The fact that I found the mermaid scene from the 2003 movie hot probably says something)

As a Mom I'd be really upset if my toddler was trying to say hi to Peter Pan and was swarmed by teenage girls with cameras, and even more upset if those videos of my kid got posted online.
I totally get having a crush on a character actor and wanting to interact, but following them around, ESPECIALLY when they are clearly trying to get you to stop, isn't ok. Imagine if it was Wendy, instead, getting followed and harassed by teenage boys, with forums dedicated to her. Disney would have put a stop to that immediately. I just feel bad for the actors.
