The big difference is that kpop idols absolutely cannot be out. It's impossible, it's out of the realm of possibilities. Harry and Louis could come out if all of this was true. There's no reasonable reason to think they would put up with 250 beards and a whole fake baby. However if you're a Korean idol ? Nope, you can never come out. The only one who's out is Holland and he has a very small career.

also something important to add is that korean relationships and friendships are very different from what western people are used to and it was something that shocked and amazed me when i first got into kpop. men hugging men, holding hands, being very affectionate physically is seen as normal and not sexualized, and it's something that some western fans have a hard time understanding. i remember when i first got into bts and saw any interaction between jungkook and jimin (for example) and thought "larries would sh-t their pants if they saw something like this" lmao

I think shipping real people can be harmless and non-toxic, but Larries take it way too far, man. In my favourite band's fanbase, shipping exists, but it is very self-contained and the few times the members of the band have heard about it, they've said it's OK, just keep things like fan fic away from them, which we do. On the very rare occasion that someone has taken it too far, they're widely condemned by the large majority of the fanbase. Nobody likes the folks who take it too far. We see it as a game/hobby and write fan fic and draw art about it, but in our actual interactions with the guys, we don't bring it up or harass them in any way. I don't actually believe any of the ships of this band that I partake in online, it's just fun to think about is all. We know for a fact that 3 out of 4 of the members are straight men, the 4th guy is a bit up in the air because he talks openly about being attracted to men but has never labelled himself. And the majority of the fanbase would never ask him to label himself either, or force anything out of him at all. I'm honestly very proud of the way we handle things. Larries take something that is meant to be a game, and turn it into this horrible harassment campaign against Harry and Louis, and it's so sad to see. And I don't pretend to be holier than thou either, I haven't always been how I should with ships. When I was 14 in 2012, I shipped Dan and Phil super hard and it was the only ship I ever fully, 100% believed in. I was conspiracy level with them, not quite to the extent of Larries thankfully, but conspiracy level all the same, and I know for a fact that I directly caused drama in the Phandom once that ended up reaching Phil. I have felt so bad for years about that. But yeah, as someone who's been both a toxic shipper in a toxic fandom, and is now someone who tries to be as respectful as possible in a much more respectful fandom, I've seen both sides and I can tell you now, I don't think shipping real people is the problem personally. The problem is when people actually believe the ship and take it really far, instead of just, y'know, having fun with it and treating it like the game it is supposed to be.

I feel like any and all ship talk regarding real people/the personas of real people should start and end with the comfort/consent of that person. If they say "sure knock yourselves out" go wild, go crazy, go stupid. If they say "sure but keep it away from me" I appreciate the fans who actually accept and take that boundary in stride. Many don't, and that's always a huge shame. But if that person says "stop it makes me uncomfortable" FUCKING STOP. I had a friend (emphasis on "had") who didn't respect being told no, yet had a history of abusive relationships and hugely denounced r*pe culture...and she really didn't like when I asked her why "no means no" didn't apply to her overstepping this boundary. I agree with you tbh, shipping real people/their personas can be done in a non-toxic way, but usually when it gets to conspiracy/obsession levels of belief and engagement, it can't *not* impact that person's real life.

So many things going on here: 1. The idea that men can only be affectionate with a romantic partner. 2. Women, particularly straight women, fetishizing gay men. 3. Bi erasure. Even if Harry and Louis were together that doesn't mean that they couldn't be with women. 4. Tons of misogyny, probably out of jealousy. The girlfriends of male singers tend to be attractive, most likely more attractive than the fangirls. This is speculation on my part but I think some female fans like the idea of their favorite male celebrities being gay because it means that they never had a chance of being with them. There's no rejection or insecurity that they're not pretty enough. 5. Hypocrisy. Claiming to be supportive of gay rights but still trying to force people to come out. 6. The delusions of parasoial relationships. You may like Harry or Louis music and my follow them on social media but you don't actually know them. They are not your friends. You have nothing to do with their personal lives. Also if Eleanor, Freddie, etc are paid actors then why do the fans care? Why harass them online? If they're just being paid to be there then just leave them be until their contracts expire.

When people started debating the existence of Freddie or wether he was actually Louis' son I was revolted - Freddie never asked to be in the middle of this yet when he grows older and one day he wants to watch old videos of his dad or even if he just searches up his dad there will be these disgusting comments saying Freddie's not real, Louis is not his son he's going to be left so confused and hurt. Like if his documentary did not confirm the love and the existence of his own child then they need a wake up call because I don't know what more could be done to prove he's an actual living being that has feelings
a couple things to add on. in 2016 when larries were basically criticizing louis' parenting because he was always in the uk, using it as evidence of larry, in reality his mom was dying of cancer. and they made his and his family's lives more difficult. another thing is the stalking incidents. I don't know if they've just been wiped from tumblr but there was a period of time where larries were stalking freddie to get evidence he was not real.
what aggravates me about larries is that they’re predominantly made up of young girls and women yet are responsible for some of the most vile displays of misogyny i’ve seen on the internet. it’s surely internalised and something i hope they can all overcome eventually but the way they’ve continually taken their senseless anger out on the very real girlfriends of these two men over fictional accounts of their lives is really unsettling. the most recent to fall victim is taylor russell and seeing the nasty, racist vitriol she’s facing from people who claim to “love” harry styles but can’t begin to fathom that he could be happy in a relationship with her genuinely does make me sick.

FR. I'm sort of a larrie - i believe they were together at some point - but it infuriates me when people just cannot accept that they've dated/been happy with other people, especially women. The other larries and their behavior prevent me from saying that I believe that theory, because i don't want to be associated with the overanalyzers, harrasers, biphobics, delusional people, and especially people who don't believe in freddy. outside of believing in the theory due to evidence I've seen, i don't participate in any other "larry" behavior

Almost all my friends have had my chili because it's easy to make so I make it anytime I have to cook for someone. A big thing about these type of shippers is that they hate women. If Harry dates a woman, that woman is likely prettier and more successful than they are by a mile. Seeing him with them makes them jealous and insecure about themselves. So they prefer to believe he is completely out of their reach. So bisexuality isn't an option. He has to be gay. You can tell by how evil they imagine their girlfriends to be. They could easily think of them as friends helping their poor gay artist friend out. But instead Eleanor, Olivia, Brianna, Camille are presented as attention seeking evil, racist harpies. They hate their girlfriends.

All of this just proved to me how delusional I was in 2015 when I was sucked into the conspiracy that Benedict Cumberbatch's wife Sophie Hunter was a PR relationship. Niall recently spoke about his relationship and says he keeps it private because “there’d be all these theories”😭 these guys are traumatized and i can see why. they don’t even want to share anything anymore because people always ruin it. i just hope everyone affected is able to heal from this.

I just hate that the Larries never consider that it's none of their business. All of this could be true (though unlikely), but that DOESN'T MATTER because no one should have to disclose their sexuality, or the details of their pregnancy, or so on?? No one is entitled to that information. it's no surprise to me that they were very physically and verbally affectionate in the early years of 1d, and that it sorta died down as the larry conspiracy gained more steam. we all know that that kind of speculation can really fuck up a friendship. my best friend and i are really close and hang out with each other more than other people, and as a result there was a time when our friends + family members assumed we were dating, and after learning this it made us really uncomfortable. for a while, we never hung out without at least one other friend present and stopped hugging / being physically affectionate because we didn't want other people to take it the wrong way. and that was just because of a small handful of people we knew briefly assuming we were girlfriends, not hordes of online strangers dedicating themselves to anaylizing our every interaction to "prove" that were were together. (and also, even if we weren't dating, we were both queer and out, so there wasn't the added uncomfortableness of people speculating over our sexuality)

I honestly think that the only proof you need to disprove Larry is just how public with thier affection they were at least at the beginning. If they were really together I'm pretty sure management would've had them not interacting like they were from day 1 because it drew too much attention.
It’s super-common for boyband members to be touchy-feely with each other, to claim to be best friends, to play up to fan desires for sexual ambiguity. This goes all the way back to Take That at least in the early 90s (who at least came by their gay aesthetic honestly because they started out playing gay clubs). Everyone knows this is what teenage girls like.

You hit the nail on the head on why people like RPF; it's a way to enjoy the self-insert parts of fanfic while still keeping a safe distance from actually imagining yourself in romantic or sexual scenarios. I think what crosses the line is when the people being written about actually become aware of and/or become involved in the material (i.e. when others show them fan art/fiction/blogs/etc and ask for their opinions on it, or the stories that fans read shift from explicit fiction to actual theories about these people's lives.) RPF has the potential to be harmless, as long as those creating and consuming that content are able to separate fiction from real life- which becomes more difficult when 1. the people involved are often very young, and 2. the content involves real people and speculations about real events. Anyway, fantastic stuff as always Ashley! As someone who grew up in fandom circles, I appreciate hearing lore about those circles I wasn't familiar with, without having to hear someone condescend to the idea of "cringey" fandom or fans as a whole.
Idk something about it still feel ethically icky to me… you can still feel like a fly on a wall with fictional ships and fics why bring real people into it? Idk I just feel like if people were writing stories about me (smutty or not) I would feel very uncomfortable and I know not everyone feels that way but you don’t know who does and doesn’t so avoiding it seems like the most respectful and logical option. Also I feel like we REALLY dehumanize celebrities and treat them with very little privacy, and often don’t respect their boundaries and I think we have to remember that these are actually human beings not just icons to look up to and fantasize about.

@@remytherat2929 I think RPF is most acceptable if the people involved have larger-than-life public personas (i.e. pro wrestlers, KISS, or visual kei musicians) and the stories are about the personas only. No real people involved, nobody gets hurt. It’s a bit thornier, but still acceptable, if the real people are put in obviously fantastical situations (i.e. magical girl Taylor Swift, One Direction as Jack Sparrow-like pirates, BTS crewing a starship). This at least represents a firm disconnect of reality and fantasy, and shows the celebrities getting romantic with each other in the fantasy space only. When you start writing what you imagine the real lives of real people are like, though . . . that’s when the lines between reality and fantasy get a lot more blurry, and there’s more risk of feeding people’s distorted perceptions of reality.
btw Freddy Mercury was bi. He identified as bi, even though people kept calling him gay because biphobia. Like still to this day you find articles saying "he claimed to be bisexual but he could have been a gay man who got involved with women because comphet". Calling him gay though is not exactly wrong when used as umbrella term because he used that too as an umbrella term for himself.

I think with historical people, who had different terms and concepts for gender and sexuality, it's not at all easy to translate them to the modern understanding, and it's probably impossible task that would only flatten our understanding of history. For Sappho we can say she was in modern terms sapphic (duh), but I don't think we can say she was bi, though to be fair, we also can't say she was lesbian. We have Freddy on record identifying himself as bi and telling that one of the loves of his life was a woman, and the other a man. He lived in modern times, with modern understanding of gender and sexuality, and he did tell how he identified, there's really no question at all. But when a historical person lived in different time periods or we don't have records of them identifying themselves, I don't think it's fruitful to try to identify them posthumously. We can speculate and see some common experiences, but we can really never know.

i got into the fandom through a friend. she presented everything to me as if it was all facts and i was so into it all. i loved the fandom side of it; some of the best fics i've ever written or read was in that fandom. they were great muses lol but then i started realizing how uncomfy i was with certain things. so i told my friends i no longer really wanted to be in that side of things. within a few moments i was getting awful messages and was blocked by some dear friends. friends i'd stayed up all night talking with through break ups and sad times. friends who we'd traveled to see one another. friends who helped pay for my vet bills when times were tough. all gone in a matter of a day the moment i said "hey i'm gonna back off from this and enjoy one direction without being so invested in larry." i didn't even say anything hateful about larries. just that i wanted to step back from it. and that was enough for me to lose friendships i'd had for over three years. i've never really joined another fandom again after that. i miss it. i miss the creating and the fics and the support and friendships. but i am so scared of another thing happening like that. it was absolutely wild and really messed with me mentally for awhile.
i'm really sorry to hear that. i know what it's like to have a friend turn on you (even though my circumstances were wayyyyy different), i hope you get to enjoy those things again. if writing fanfic and sharing your love for something makes you happy, don't let those stupid ppl ruin it for you, there are healthy ways to enjoy fandoms (but even if you decide to step back forever, that's also valid). good luck on your healing journey

This is a good breakdown. I was never a 1D fan but when I was a teenager I was a Boyzone fan. Stephen Gately of Boyzone really was closeted for years and was the first member of a still-active boyband to come out, back in 1999. He was hugely supported by the British public. The idea that anyone in the British music industry would form a conspiracy to keep a boyband member in the closet is insane - we have loads and loads of evidence that teenage girls adore gay boyband members. The idea that said bandmembers would drop *hints* is even crazier. I guessed that Stephen Gately was gay long before he came out precisely because he was so very careful to avoid the subject of his private life while his bandmates were getting married and having babies, and everyone very carefully tiptoed around the subject and pretended not to notice. Closeted boyband members do not joke around about having a bromance.

I saw a screenshot of a Larry on tumblr tweeting/making an infographic about how they discovered that they’ve been living in a home with black mold and that black mold was affecting their judgement and making them very delusional about Larry and ever since they got rid of the black mold they no longer believe in it and they decided to retire and leave the Larry fandom. So basically, my own theory about larries is that they either have carbon monoxide poisoning or black mold, and that’s why so many of them are hysterical about two glamorized strangers being in a top secret gay relationship and feel compelled to track a woman’s menstrual cycle and try to get ahold of her child’s birth certificate just to feel an ounce of validation from a non existent relationship that shouldn’t even affect them personally bc any kind of celebrity relationship isn’t any of our business and doesn’t include us.

im deeply embarrassed to say that 10 years ago i was entrenched in the larry lore. given i was about 14 and had 3 braincells due to various reasons, my heart was in it. I never really was one of those hardcore shippers that harassed them or family members, and I think was more embroiled in the supposed love story. ive always loved love, and having been in fandom culture for most of my life, it felt like the most logical thing ever. looking back on it now as an adult, im still very iffy about rpf. the ethics around it to me are bit grey and im not too keen on shipping culture. but man was it a ride back then. name a larry fic on ao3, ive probably read it. anyways so excited to tune in, and im kinda excited to unlock that vault of repressed memories. love your videos!! 💕
I've landed on neutral on rpf. It's not for me but I understand the appeal. I dont think it is inherently a problem as long as the people interacting with it understand that it is fantasy and not reality. I think the problem is that fans (especially young fans) way overstep with their interactions with celebrities and don't understand the difference between a personal public persona/stage presence and reality (which is what the PR people want tbf). Social media has made it so much easier to interact with celebrities which is where it gets scary. RPF belongs on fanfic websites not being sent to the celebrities themselves.

Fans often confuse people not believing the ridiculous “yes and” of the theories for people not believing it’s possible for 2 people to have had feelings for each other. I believe Harry styles and louis Thompson could have had or wanted a romantic relationship because people often have romantic feelings for other people. What I don’t believe is Simon cow or faceless business people orchestrated this whole coverup. I’m sure Harry and louis could be messy and confusing without someone controlling them. Especially as in the uk it’s a different climate for queer celebrities. The uk is one of the most secularised countries in the world and unlike the US, there’s been continued acceptance and support for lbgt for the last 30 years. as a former larrie, i do want to point out some things: 9:47 both of these things (the tweet and the tattoos) were linked to larry without a single confirmation from either harry or louis. harry had a habit of just tweeting random quotes or lyrics completely out of context, and of course he never explained them. larries have taken a lot of those quotes to believe that harry was quoting louis, but that's part of their confirmation bias. likewise they've never confirmed the oops and hi thing. at most, louis said on a wired interview that he got the oops! tattooed bc one of his tattoos in his arm came out a little wonky. 10:56 most of the problems associated with this is that people just straight up assume that louis must be cooking chicken or whatever else was in the recipe in that photo. in reality this was never confirmed, like there wasn't an aftermath where we knew what louis cooked that day... and while it could have been that recipe, there's also the possibility that louis considers the experience of cooking for his gf his first real cooking experience because he did all of it himself, plus making it for somebody else. just adding to your comment about the situation too 12:34 18 was written by ed sheeran for the group. he did say he wrote it from their perspectives, so based on the couples going on in the group (he didn't specify which, and at the time i believe it was louis and eleanor, zayn and perrie and liam and danielle), but probably the "18" part larries were so fixated on was not meant to be taking super literally. 12:50 the roommates thing is a huge thing for larries so i was shocked when i got info that actually all of 1d moved to the same apartment complex (princess park), where 4 lived together on pairs and one on their own, because of 1d's deal with syco at the time. as a larrie i genuinely believed harry and louis just moved out together somewhere, turns out larries were twisting the facts, how shocking. also, the person who made that babygate buzzfeed article (sexatoxbridge) was a well known larry in the tumblr community. actually a bunch of the most popular larries were adults with jobs who would use their influence to spread the larry conspiracy in their workplaces (there was this woman at yahoo, and another guy who was also a journalist... i've forgotten about them lol) but for the most part your video is well researched and i appreciate the shade and quick explanations you add between the conspiracy bits. i did get war flashbacks multiple times... i remembered being on vacation and getting on my mom's phone (bc i didn't have data) to browse a larrie tumblr blog on an incognito tab, whose url i memorized to check on the latest news (because they could come out at any moment!). it's both embarrassing and very humbling lol

for a brief period i had a friend i met on tumblr through another fandom. She was also a directioner and since i wasn't, it didn't really come up much, until the news of the baby broke out. She then went on a rant about how that is all fake and a conspiracy theory and how i should just wait and see and i was so speechless. She was about to finish medschool, a seemingly intelligent girl in her mid twenties. I was so caught off guard. Needless to say, the friendship didn't last long after that...
no it's terrifying. most of the people who were larries during the band's big days continue to be larries still, and they're all full grown adults, with jobs, and who participate in society. that's insane to me.

Most close friends act physial with eachother and that's normal. Ugh this video was amazing, im gonna subscribe! A similar topic i find just as interesting is how misogyny runs rampant in fandom culture, particularly shipping culture. Some examples i can think of off the top of my head are how larries treated eleanor calder (the witchhunt to find anything problematic that shes done and harrassing her for it) or any of harry's previous exes (the threads made by larries about 'why olivia wilde is problematic' were sometimes very off the wall crazy lmao). Not to say that olivia and eleanor havent done bad things, but the way larries would try to cancel olivia for her dancing at harrys shows and for not "taking care of her kids bc shes out partying" really rubbed me the wrong way. I think shipping real people can be harmless and non-toxic, but Larries take it way too far, man. In my favourite band's fanbase, shipping exists, but it is very self-contained and the few times the members of the band have heard about it, they've said it's OK, just keep things like fan fic away from them, which we do. On the very rare occasion that someone has taken it too far, they're widely condemned by the large majority of the fanbase. Nobody likes the folks who take it too far. We see it as a game/hobby and write fan fic and draw art about it, but in our actual interactions with the guys, we don't bring it up or harass them in any way. I don't actually believe any of the ships of this band that I partake in online, it's just fun to think about is all. We know for a fact that 3 out of 4 of the members are straight men, the 4th guy is a bit up in the air because he talks openly about being attracted to men but has never labelled himself. And the majority of the fanbase would never ask him to label himself either, or force anything out of him at all. I'm honestly very proud of the way we handle things. Larries take something that is meant to be a game, and turn it into this horrible harassment campaign against Harry and Louis, and it's so sad to see. And I don't pretend to be holier than thou either, I haven't always been how I should with ships. When I was 14 in 2012, I shipped Dan and Phil super hard and it was the only ship I ever fully, 100% believed in. I was conspiracy level with them, not quite to the extent of Larries thankfully, but conspiracy level all the same, and I know for a fact that I directly caused drama in the Phandom once that ended up reaching Phil. I have felt so bad for years about that. But yeah, as someone who's been both a toxic shipper in a toxic fandom, and is now someone who tries to be as respectful as possible in a much more respectful fandom, I've seen both sides and I can tell you now, I don't think shipping real people is the problem personally. The problem is when people actually believe the ship and take it really far, instead of just, y'know, having fun with it and treating it like the game it is supposed to be.

1. The idea that men can only be affectionate with a romantic partner.
2. Women, particularly straight women, fetishizing gay men.
3. Bi erasure. Even if Harry and Louis were together that doesn't mean that they couldn't be with women.
4. Tons of misogyny, probably out of jealousy. The girlfriends of male singers tend to be attractive, most likely more attractive than the fangirls. This is speculation on my part but I think some female fans like the idea of their favorite male celebrities being gay because it means that they never had a chance of being with them. There's no rejection or insecurity that they're not pretty enough.
5. Hypocrisy. Claiming to be supportive of gay rights but still trying to force people to come out.
6. The delusions of parasoial relationships. You may like Harry or Louis music and my follow them on social media but you don't actually know them. They are not your friends. You have nothing to do with their personal lives. Also if Eleanor, Freddie, etc are paid actors then why do the fans care? Why harass them online? If they're just being paid to be there then just leave them be until their contracts expire.

a couple things to add on. in 2016 when larries were basically criticizing louis' parenting because he was always in the uk, using it as evidence of larry, in reality his mom was dying of cancer. and they made his and his family's lives more difficult.

it's no surprise to me that they were very physically and verbally affectionate in the early years of 1d, and that it sorta died down as the larry conspiracy gained more steam. we all know that that kind of speculation can really fuck up a friendship. my best friend and i are really close and hang out with each other more than other people, and as a result there was a time when our friends + family members assumed we were dating, and after learning this it made us really uncomfortable. for a while, we never hung out without at least one other friend present and stopped hugging / being physically affectionate because we didn't want other people to take it the wrong way. and that was just because of a small handful of people we knew briefly assuming we were girlfriends, not hordes of online strangers dedicating themselves to anaylizing our every interaction to "prove" that were were together.
(and also, even if we weren't dating, we were both queer and out, so there wasn't the added uncomfortableness of people speculating over our sexuality)

You hit the nail on the head on why people like RPF; it's a way to enjoy the self-insert parts of fanfic while still keeping a safe distance from actually imagining yourself in romantic or sexual scenarios. I think what crosses the line is when the people being written about actually become aware of and/or become involved in the material (i.e. when others show them fan art/fiction/blogs/etc and ask for their opinions on it, or the stories that fans read shift from explicit fiction to actual theories about these people's lives.) RPF has the potential to be harmless, as long as those creating and consuming that content are able to separate fiction from real life- which becomes more difficult when 1. the people involved are often very young, and 2. the content involves real people and speculations about real events.
Anyway, fantastic stuff as always Ashley! As someone who grew up in fandom circles, I appreciate hearing lore about those circles I wasn't familiar with, without having to hear someone condescend to the idea of "cringey" fandom or fans as a whole.
Idk something about it still feel ethically icky to me… you can still feel like a fly on a wall with fictional ships and fics why bring real people into it? Idk I just feel like if people were writing stories about me (smutty or not) I would feel very uncomfortable and I know not everyone feels that way but you don’t know who does and doesn’t so avoiding it seems like the most respectful and logical option. Also I feel like we REALLY dehumanize celebrities and treat them with very little privacy, and often don’t respect their boundaries and I think we have to remember that these are actually human beings not just icons to look up to and fantasize about.

@@remytherat2929 I think RPF is most acceptable if the people involved have larger-than-life public personas (i.e. pro wrestlers, KISS, or visual kei musicians) and the stories are about the personas only. No real people involved, nobody gets hurt. It’s a bit thornier, but still acceptable, if the real people are put in obviously fantastical situations (i.e. magical girl Taylor Swift, One Direction as Jack Sparrow-like pirates, BTS crewing a starship). This at least represents a firm disconnect of reality and fantasy, and shows the celebrities getting romantic with each other in the fantasy space only. When you start writing what you imagine the real lives of real people are like, though . . . that’s when the lines between reality and fantasy get a lot more blurry, and there’s more risk of feeding people’s distorted perceptions of reality.

I think with historical people, who had different terms and concepts for gender and sexuality, it's not at all easy to translate them to the modern understanding, and it's probably impossible task that would only flatten our understanding of history. For Sappho we can say she was in modern terms sapphic (duh), but I don't think we can say she was bi, though to be fair, we also can't say she was lesbian. We have Freddy on record identifying himself as bi and telling that one of the loves of his life was a woman, and the other a man. He lived in modern times, with modern understanding of gender and sexuality, and he did tell how he identified, there's really no question at all. But when a historical person lived in different time periods or we don't have records of them identifying themselves, I don't think it's fruitful to try to identify them posthumously. We can speculate and see some common experiences, but we can really never know.

i got into the fandom through a friend. she presented everything to me as if it was all facts and i was so into it all. i loved the fandom side of it; some of the best fics i've ever written or read was in that fandom. they were great muses lol but then i started realizing how uncomfy i was with certain things. so i told my friends i no longer really wanted to be in that side of things. within a few moments i was getting awful messages and was blocked by some dear friends. friends i'd stayed up all night talking with through break ups and sad times. friends who we'd traveled to see one another. friends who helped pay for my vet bills when times were tough. all gone in a matter of a day the moment i said "hey i'm gonna back off from this and enjoy one direction without being so invested in larry." i didn't even say anything hateful about larries. just that i wanted to step back from it. and that was enough for me to lose friendships i'd had for over three years. i've never really joined another fandom again after that. i miss it. i miss the creating and the fics and the support and friendships. but i am so scared of another thing happening like that. it was absolutely wild and really messed with me mentally for awhile.

I dont think it is inherently a problem as long as the people interacting with it understand that it is fantasy and not reality. I think the problem is that fans (especially young fans) way overstep with their interactions with celebrities and don't understand the difference between a personal public persona/stage presence and reality (which is what the PR people want tbf). Social media has made it so much easier to interact with celebrities which is where it gets scary. RPF belongs on fanfic websites not being sent to the celebrities themselves.

there needs to be a name for this type of shipping conspiracy because theres a pattern to both real people (this one & gaylor) and fictional characters (the johnlock conspiracy) having their relationships turned into this supposed puzzle that people can solve, with an end goal of a big reveal, when in reality its a series of non existent connections. i cant imagine what its like living your life genuinely believing these things, investing so much energy and refusing to admit you were wrong when to anyone else it's clear people are being hurt.

Yeah, I got into harry styles last year as well and as a result kind of went down a 1D/1D members rabbit hole and there are these timeline videos on yt that actually make Larry seem very real. It only took me a couple of days to realize how effed up the whole thing is, but for a brief moment I actually thought that this was real (didn’t believe in baby gate for even a second though, bc wth)

It’s strange, fans would sooner believe louis has a fake baby than make their already unrealistic conspiracies slightly more realistic.
Like why can’t louis of hypothetically cheated on Harry or their were on a break and he experimented with a woman or he’s bi. And then 2 things can be true at once.
Gaylers, Larrys, etc all make these impossible connections to make their theory make sense but still keep their fave as “a victim”. When realistically many gay men have children and many people have crushes or flings or relationships that end. And everyone is messy and confusing especially when they’re a teenager/young adult - but everyone but celebrities get to look back and cringe.
Imagine someone you liked / dated /friends with when you were 16 and you’re now 30 and everyone keeps acting like it was the love story of the century.
Fans often confuse people not believing the ridiculous “yes and” of the theories for people not believing it’s possible for 2 people to have had feelings for each other. I believe Harry styles and louis Thompson could have had or wanted a romantic relationship because people often have romantic feelings for other people. What I don’t believe is Simon cow or faceless business people orchestrated this whole coverup. I’m sure Harry and louis could be messy and confusing without someone controlling them.
Especially as in the uk it’s a different climate for queer celebrities. The uk is one of the most secularised countries in the world and unlike the US, there’s been continued acceptance and support for lbgt for the last 30 years. We’ve also had multiple boybands with queer members like blue, boyzone, wham!, westlife, etc.
as a former larrie, i do want to point out some things:
9:47 both of these things (the tweet and the tattoos) were linked to larry without a single confirmation from either harry or louis. harry had a habit of just tweeting random quotes or lyrics completely out of context, and of course he never explained them. larries have taken a lot of those quotes to believe that harry was quoting louis, but that's part of their confirmation bias. likewise they've never confirmed the oops and hi thing. at most, louis said on a wired interview that he got the oops! tattooed bc one of his tattoos in his arm came out a little wonky.
10:56 most of the problems associated with this is that people just straight up assume that louis must be cooking chicken or whatever else was in the recipe in that photo. in reality this was never confirmed, like there wasn't an aftermath where we knew what louis cooked that day... and while it could have been that recipe, there's also the possibility that louis considers the experience of cooking for his gf his first real cooking experience because he did all of it himself, plus making it for somebody else. just adding to your comment about the situation too
12:34 18 was written by ed sheeran for the group. he did say he wrote it from their perspectives, so based on the couples going on in the group (he didn't specify which, and at the time i believe it was louis and eleanor, zayn and perrie and liam and danielle), but probably the "18" part larries were so fixated on was not meant to be taking super literally.
12:50 the roommates thing is a huge thing for larries so i was shocked when i got info that actually all of 1d moved to the same apartment complex (princess park), where 4 lived together on pairs and one on their own, because of 1d's deal with syco at the time. as a larrie i genuinely believed harry and louis just moved out together somewhere, turns out larries were twisting the facts, how shocking.
also, the person who made that babygate buzzfeed article (sexatoxbridge) was a well known larry in the tumblr community. actually a bunch of the most popular larries were adults with jobs who would use their influence to spread the larry conspiracy in their workplaces (there was this woman at yahoo, and another guy who was also a journalist... i've forgotten about them lol)
but for the most part your video is well researched and i appreciate the shade and quick explanations you add between the conspiracy bits. i did get war flashbacks multiple times... i remembered being on vacation and getting on my mom's phone (bc i didn't have data) to browse a larrie tumblr blog on an incognito tab, whose url i memorized to check on the latest news (because they could come out at any moment!). it's both embarrassing and very humbling lol

Just... wow.... I used to be a directioner and absolutely believed in Larry, because I desperately WANTED it to be true. The weird thing is the that way I remember it, the "evidence" was much more compelling and left little room for debate - in my mind it was obviously true. But when you lay it out like this I realized how much of it was just bullshit and that any form of critical thinking would have immediately disputed almost all of it.

for a brief period i had a friend i met on tumblr through another fandom. She was also a directioner and since i wasn't, it didn't really come up much, until the news of the baby broke out. She then went on a rant about how that is all fake and a conspiracy theory and how i should just wait and see and i was so speechless. She was about to finish medschool, a seemingly intelligent girl in her mid twenties. I was so caught off guard. Needless to say, the friendship didn't last long after that...
no it's terrifying. most of the people who were larries during the band's big days continue to be larries still, and they're all full grown adults, with jobs, and who participate in society. that's insane to me.

The fact that this kind of fanatical theorizing is still happening today baffles me and I feel sorry for everyone who has to endure it, the celebrities involved and sane fans alike.

oh my gosh this is so real! Me and my best friends are very physical and we do a lot of the same silly stuff as Harry and Louis and we're about as straight as you can get. Most close friends act physial with eachother and that's normal. And coming from someone who has about a million brothers and male cousins teenage and young adults boys are espessially physical with eachother a lot and can still like girls. Like it's absolutly dumb to think that just because two people are physical with each other the only option is that their in a relationship. I'm convinced Larries have never had close friends atp smh.

Honestly, this Babygate shit makes me so angry for this reason. Freddie is going to grow up and see thousands of people on the internet arguing over being his father’s kid. Freddie is probably going to feel incredibly uncomfortable and upset that so many people wished he was not Louis’s baby. Ugh this video was amazing, im gonna subscribe! A similar topic i find just as interesting is how misogyny runs rampant in fandom culture, particularly shipping culture. Some examples i can think of off the top of my head are how larries treated eleanor calder (the witchhunt to find anything problematic that shes done and harrassing her for it) or any of harry's previous exes (the threads made by larries about 'why olivia wilde is problematic' were sometimes very off the wall crazy lmao). Not to say that olivia and eleanor havent done bad things, but the way larries would try to cancel olivia for her dancing at harrys shows and for not "taking care of her kids bc shes out partying" really rubbed me the wrong way. I just wish some fans would let them enjoy their private lives without speculating over them because, in the end, theyre REAL PEOPLE and not FICTIONAL CHARACTERS
