Some people might complain about this cover being different from the original.. but this is exactly the purpose of a cover, to bring another dimension to it and this one does it perfectly to me. I'm not a Voivod fan, but I fucking love this cover.
Pretty damn faithful, really. The difference is two decades of heavy rock becoming more aggressive. Floyd attacked the track with an abandon still considered abrasive by most rock and roll fans in '67. As Floyd evolved, other heavy rock and psyche/kraut bands continued pushing the envelope and the gear got more powerful. Voivod and Floyd are different bands is the only real profound variable here. Covers should be like this, near perfect homage, or attempt to elaborate upon another artist's composition by concentrating on their own creative strengths.
It's different from the version released on Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but the structure is identical to the version performed live on Ummagumma, which is brilliant.
@@psychedelicpiper999 "Early 60's music" as in music made a couple of years before the song was written? You make it sound like that would have been a very novel thing to listen to.
A cover that kicks the original songs ass. Voivod were waaaay ahead of their time and their music still hasn't dated at all. Brilliant, probably the most underrated band ever.
One of the best covers I’ve ever heard. Covering Pink Floyd takes fucking balls. They honored the original while giving it their own twist. Just amazing.
I saw them on this tour back in the 90s... The venue lineup was Soundgarden, Faith No More and Voi Vod as the headliner inside tiny L'Maours Brooklyn. Amazing show. Great band live,
Plusieurs années passées, la première fois que j'ai entendu cette chanson j'ai capoté, Oh wow! Quelle Toune Man!! Un moment donné j'ai entendu la version de Pink Floyd! ahahaha! Belle reprise Rock Québécois! BRAVOOOOOO !!!
I think this cover is more based on Floyd’s live version from Ummagumma. I agree that this one is better than the original on Piper at the Gates of Dawn but I still like their Ummagumma version better than this cover.
Amazing song by an amazing band! I finally got to see them in Barcelona in 2009 with Sepultura, Municipal Waste and someone else... Away came up to me outside the venue and told me "cool t-shirt" as I was of course wearing the original Voivod t-shirt. Got a photo with Snake as well inside the club. They all seemed like great guys. Long live Voivod!
this is the video that got me into Voivod... never looked back. For those interested, they also did a killer cover of The Nile Song on their The Outer Limits record
Nothingface is a great album. And for those who listen to this as "only" a cover, the song kinda convenes itself as an inseperable part of the whole album. It really shifts into a different realm compared to the original version.
I like to keep thinking that if PF had not been there, the music would not have reached such high melodic spheres. Since my childhood, PF was a revelation for me, my nickname testifies to it. I'm so happy that my favorite band is still on the road today. I have seen many tribute groups, excellent others and very average ones, but the pleasure of hearing again and again this fabulous music live despite the fashions and the passing of time always fascinates me. Fabulous masterpieces have marked many people, but my favorites remain: - the entire Dark side ... - Echoes - Dominated Astronomy (so underestimated, science fiction and psychedelia at its best!) - Dogs - Atom Heart Mother suite - Shine on ... - the whole of The Wall Long live PF !!! It misses the famous flight: Oooooh! (8x) Why? Bravo to this pride of Jonquière !!!
Even if you didn't like heavy metal or Pink Floyd, you have to admit that song and video are stunning. It was an instant classic when it was released, and still stands up more than 20 years on.
I love the Nothingface album. Nobody else was doing anything like that one at the time. Great cover song 1349's version of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" is pretty awesome too.
I can guarantee VV had no intentions beyond paying homage to Syd-era Floyd when doing this cover...and it introduced me as a teen to greatness I wasn't aware existed pre- DSotM. The fact it's a great cover is a by-product of the love that went into making it.
I read somewhere that Syd Barret was a normal boy who grew up to be a normal mate that in his 40s discovered this band VoiVod and fell in love with this song of theirs that talked about planets and the cosmos. He then, after a series of events triggered by his love of VoiVod, fell into a time machine that took him back to the 60s where he met some great musicians and together formed one of the best bands in the universe. A couple of years later he wrote down his favorite VoiVod song and performed the cover in front of his bandmates - they all loved it and put it in their next record believing that it was theirs. Only Syd knew the truth.
So then who wrote the song? Voivod said its a cover, you said Syd heard it and went back and covered it. Then its a cover of a cover and on and on a never ending loop of insanity. No wonder Syd lost it. Glad I'm a newt such deep thoughts could hurt or blow up the universe. No.
@@ary9437 so, let me get this. Syd heard himself play it, I guess in a drug induced time sift or altunivers thingy then voivod must have picked up on that wave and bam! The loop.
@@dankeith6522 Nah mate, premise is that Voivod wrote it, then Syd travelled back and altered time using it as his own. There are undoubtedly flaws in the theory, but it's just an amusing thought in the first place
... just to make you understand the attention to detail of this Band: at the 4:06 last 3 bits of drums are 3 flame of which 1 of snare and 2 of double kick. Brilliant.
I started a big thread on a site regarding this very tune by Voivod. Many didn't know anyone covered it. Was happy to expose it. Voivod simply in my eyes did it justice. Bass line is stellar. Still listening to it to this day.
I love thissssss🖤I was just listening to Pink Floyd like an hour ago and I thought “hmm now I feel like listening to voivod” without even knowing they did a cover of this song. Now that I know I can finally die happy.
I believe I saw their first show in the US back in 85 or 86. They opened for Venom at the Ritz and completely held their own with the Masters. After they performed, I was hanging with the singer watching Venom and he kept saying with a heavy accent, "I love America!!!" True story.
Some people might complain about this cover being different from the original.. but this is exactly the purpose of a cover, to bring another dimension to it and this one does it perfectly to me. I'm not a Voivod fan, but I fucking love this cover.

as a Pink Floyd fan, I find this version better than the original
As a 60 years old Pink Floyd fan who loves early Pink Floyd : this cover is excellent
This is EXACTLY how you cover a Pink Floyd track!
Syd Barret would be damn proud.
Maybe if they got the lyrics half right
+Ira Nonsense, my dear! It's perfect! 😉
Yes totally perfect!

I'm with you brother
This is one of my 2 favorite covers with the other being Doro's version of "Breakin the Law" with the orchestra behind her.
Korn does a great pink floyd cover too and I'm not even a big fan of Korn. Voivod rules.
I listened to the Pink Floyd original after hearing this. To me, Voivod owns the song!!!
Seen it live in 91 at the trick in philly

this band is so underrated , i love there old stuff as well

Amazing show. Great band live,
so did I in st Louis
Thank you Voivod for showing us what a genius Syd Barrett was with your amazing cover of his Pink Floyd song
Some of the best sounding basses on any album ever. Voivod is the greatest🔥
Syd's smiling, somewhere.
The best Floyd cover ever.
That drumming though
The bass guitar😜
They are both fantastic. 👏😄
I hate covers but this one is another thing.
this is just what would happen if pink floyd were born on saturn, it's just a song from another dimension,

Voivod has been totally revitalized since Target Earth. They knocked it out of the park with The Wake.
They sure did.
Chewie's awesomeness really helps take some of the sting of losing Piggy.
This was absolutely mind blowing to watch on Much Music when it was a brand new release 🤯
One of the greatest cover versions of any song ever. This one is so amazing that it actually beats the original.
Agreed.
Could have had one of their girlfriends singing some of the backing vocal siren voice...

No it most certainly does not beat the original...

I'm a big Floyd fan and have probably had their version so imprinted on me that I can prefer no other. But this is a damn good one.
I've played in a PF cover band for 13 years and this is still one of the most true to life covers I've ever heard... We steal this version often!

The louder sound makes this version so much better
pink floyd have done louder version, Ummagumma live album version for example
Good to know ty
Yeah, but the lack of innovative guitar playing makes it worse and run-of-the-mill.
this is the video that got me into Voivod... never looked back. For those interested, they also did a killer cover of The Nile Song on their The Outer Limits record
Didn't they also do a King Crimson cover?
Trippy and rocking! They did justice to pink floyd. I love it. 👍🏻👌🏻
