Not just dog dander. Probably dust and mold. Wear a mask during demolition. Strip it back and keep it simple. Great floors. Air B and B customers will appreciate the simplicity and rustic setting more than fancy furniture.

I agree 100 with your recommendations. When we pulled the carpet up from the 150 year old house we bought in the fall, the original floors were really good. We replaced some planks and then painted the floors and put area rugs in for the yummy factor.

I hope you're going to make a whole series about this restoration, with the exterior of house and the garden included. There seems to be an almost insatiable interest in house restoration these days [with many of those houses being nowhere near as charming as this house] so you should get great views.
Meanwhile, it's great to see the cottage has not been mucked about with too much. Just look at that baseboard on the stairs. It was cut to curve up/around the stairs and it looks so much more attractive than just a straight cut. I wonder if the people who built the Keeper's Cottage paid extra for that little detail or whether it was just routine back then. I paid a *lot* extra to have that done in a cottage I was having renovated 20 years ago!

Be careful with this old plastic floor in one of the rooms. These old tiles may contain asbestos. They were used in the 50s. Wish I could live in that cottage!

In addition to animal fur and dander, you’re also pulling up dust mites and their poop-sure to make your sinuses and eyes irritated. It’s always a good idea to wear a mask and vacuum while you work. Also, open as many windows as possible. That’s what I would do.

  • @LongevityBound

Julie! You should wear a mask when pulling up flooring. Not just because of the dust, but because you never know what you may find underneath (mold, asbestos, etc.).

Please put protective gear on rest of demo u do in that cottage.Yes, the wood will definitely look good when refurbef.PLEASE DON'T PAINT.The natural would will look fab! The paint will ruin the wood. Hate wall to wall carpeting.Gross.That floor surface in that one room could poss.

Mine as well! With your "sweat equity" there will be more budget for other repairs and renovations. Good for you. Along this line I have one thought. I live in Florida where humidity is high for 6 mos. of the year: My bug man wears some kind of sleeves made of a wicking material. He says they keep his skin from accumulating too much sweat. He feels more uncomfortable crawling around underneath houses without them.

Oh Julie, I had to finally stop at 20:19, you really need a mask and gloves to pull up carpet. I hope you don't come down with something bad. This will be a great transformation, am looking forward to future vlogs but please think before you do demo. We all want you healthy at the end of this project.
On another note, the hardware on the doors is stunning. Not sure why you'd want to paint the floors after sanding. Wouldn't it be nicer to either stain or clear coat, so the full beauty of the wood comes through? Paint those floors where the wood might not be so great. Not sure what a cost difference would be but surely it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

I pulled all of the carpet up in my “new” house a few years ago and I struggled with catching my breath too. My chest hurt. I thought it was dander as well, but really I pulled a muscle in my chest. My Doctor said it was very common, and that only rest would heal it. It did and I paid someone $100.00 to pull up the carpet in the last room. Best of luck

Sand floors and stairs. You can rent a commercial floor sander. You just walk behind it, less work than a hand sander. You would need only a hand sander to get close to walls. Then just put a clear coat of poly on floors ( 2 coats) . Paint and new lights. Keep the bottom kitchen cabinets, paint like a dark green. Put wood shelf’s at top for plates, glasses , bowl sets etc. The bathrooms tile the walls white, 2 showers and 2 toilets and a 2 pedestal sink. I would eliminate the bathroom downstairs and make it a utility room with washer and dryer and shelf’s to hold the luggage, shoes and a place to hang coats and all clothes. Then all the guest personal stuff will be in one place. This would Eliminate a wardrobe upstairs. If you paint all walls white and ceilings and keep the wood floor clear stain. The house will look huge and bright. This is an Airbnb not a home someone lives in all the time. Simple and less costly. A nice area outside to have a table and gazebo and fire pit. All you need in bedrooms are a Bed one nightstand and two chairs. Sitting area Couch and 2 chairs and coffee table. Dining room a table and chairs. Eliminate all clutter the other airbnb is nice but to much furniture. To much to dust and clean when the guest leave. Julie your in physical shape to sand floors and paint. That will be your exercise for the month!!!! Next time you get a box cutter to cut the carpet into strips before removing from floor it is easier to remove from house. I am a women and have redone many homes. You can do it!!!

I loved the colorful backsplash. So sad to have seen it go away. For reals. I totes understand taking things back to the plaster, or even the framework, but when budget is a consideration, there was a lot that could have remained and flipped this without so much de-construction (esp if the goal is to generate revenue).

  • @marypeterson226

If someone else said something about this already, I missed it in the comments. Looking at that tile floor, I'm wondering if those are asbestos tiles - if so, before you started ripping them out, I hope you got proper protection because asbestos that gets disturbed send out cancerous fibers and can be very unhealthy. In the US, if its already been disturbed or is breaking down, we have to have very expensive "remediation" by companies that some with masks, overalls, breathing apparatus and tent the whole area to make sure none of the fibers escape. If the tiles are in good shape, obviously carpeting over them is the cheaper alternative and still safe.

It was hard to see in the sitting room if flooring was tile and you might want to do a test to see if it’s asbestos tile. I know that sounds weird but I just watched a video not that long ago by a Canadian vlogger who was renovating her house and discovered that and how she dealt with it. Cotswolds Vlogger Josie (formerly JosieLdn) has a bed-and-breakfast called Strawtop Cottage with lots of really nice touches within the accommodation. You might need to stay there to check it out :). Here's an anecdote about our experience with floors (US Midwest). We had layers of ceramic, sheet vinyl, and vinyl squares on top of oak floors. Old vinyl is tedious but not hard to pry up. For us the hard part was getting the black, tar-like glue off the wood, which we did by pouring mineral spirits on it and wiping and wiping (on a windy day with all the windows open). There may be some staining around your fireplace but I suggest it would be worth getting that old vinyl or lino up.

I agree with Jean Thobaben's comment below. Originally, this would have been considered a simple, humble little cottage. As such, it should retain its cozy and rustic charm by not over decorating it. The decor should reflect what the Keeper's House was/is: a charming English cottage.
About those stripey socks! Luke, you are not plain and boring, but rather understated and dignified. I'm with you regarding the socks. 👍😉

Oh guys this place is gorgeous! Please guys PLEASE when you restore this place can you do it up in what it should have been? I mean make it look like the period it was built. Seriously, people traveling to Europe want to feel like they've stepped back in time and so many like in Scotland take these wonderful OLD cottages and hang new sheet rock and bring in all the modern looking stuff. Please keep it with the period. Like with the floors, geez leave some of the oldness of the floors. The character in that old place could be amazing!! And please don't take all the ivy of the front. That's another thing.. don't try to make the outside look brand new☹️... you've probably had an allergy attack from dust!

Love the project! Wear a mask, use a box cutter to strip the carpet into more manageable sections, cover your body when uncovering years of old construction material. Take care Julie! ❤️ Christi, Alabama.

When we took over my in-laws house, we also tore out all of the carpets, living room, dining room, halls and bedrooms. There was beautiful hardwood floors beneath. Thank goodness. I can’t have carpeting due to allergies so we were quite successful in modernizing the h Ouse and removing allergen collecting carpets. I’m sure you will be equally happy. I would suggest wearing long sleeves and a mask while you do this. The materials have been there for decades and could have tons of allergens there

Awww…. Such a charmer. I’m imagining roses trailing over the front door and a happy kettle whistling on the hob. Looking forward to your magic here.

Loved this! But from now on, please, please wear mask, gloves and eye protection. You have no idea what nasty stuff you are breathing into your lungs. 😁

Too late now and not that you are asking for advice but I have found removing old carpet is much easier if you cut it into 6 foot strips first. smaller pieces to manage. Plus here in the US as you know, the garbage people don't pick up something that's bigger.
