The Zildjian Sweet Ride and the Paiste 900 were the two best to me and would work the best in any style of music. Mean while the snare and bass drums stole the show.
The depth and clarity of the Waronker is on another level. I can definitely hear that working in a lot of contexts. Meinl Spectrum is my next fav, cool tone and controlled wash.
I think the Meinl Polyphonic ride is another good one too. Ride it, crash it, do whatever you want to it and it has a solid sound for all. Fits with a lot of stuff
I'm leaning towards the Zildjian sweet ride and the Paiste 900 series. I recently purchased a Zildjian 21 inch sweet ride at a local drum shop and I really like it.
I would gladly take any of these rides as a fine addition to my kit. However the Zildjian Sweet 23 . In my opinion had the best sound and performance. All these rides are awesome. I guess it’s time to upgrade huh?
The cymbals will also sound differently in person, although this does give a good contrast between these particular ones in the same setting. My personal preference is the Sabian Medium Brilliant. Yes, I also have the Zildjian and it is nice -- but not as nice as the Sabian. My crash cymbals are Zildjian and all of them are up to over 50 years different in age.
Back in 1975 I made a great investment it cost me $225 it was a Zildjian 21 in rock ride with a heavy duty Bell best investment ever!! never heard a ride cymbal better than that one!
That Paiste 900 has sweet ping and a surprisingly nice wash. Both riding and crash are very musical IMO. Bell cuts through really nice. May be a bit light for hard & louder music, but most other types I see this doing the job nicely. I may have to lay down some chips and add one to the arsenal. Nice demo all around.
Great review Tom! Each Ride has it's own special signature qualities. For now, I'm sticking, no pun intended, with my Istanbul Mel Lewis 22" it just works for me! Thanks and Blessings!!!
The Great demos along with good prices, free shipping, and the kicker, no sales tax. All those things and more make y'all my go to drum store. Keep up the great work guys.
I had a 19" Avedis Zildjian Medium crash, with such unusual overtones with a beautiful medium long decay, and a 21" Avedis Zildjian Ride cymbal that were both stolen from me by, of all people, Our Manager. We were doing film and television soundtracks at the time, not playing out as a band, and this guy who I had placed my trust and love in for sooooo many years, just up and f**ked me over! That was years ago, but this shit happens! Always keep an eye on the people who are in your orbit, supposedly "looking after your artistry, whether as a "Manager," a "Publicist," or as something called "a Lawyer." Be careful, composers! Do your homework before you ever release one tiny piece of your compositions!!!!
The Paiste was my favorite, though they all sounded great! It cuts through pretty nicely without sounding too pingy. The 23" Zildiian was a close second, I got to actually try that one out once and really liked it. The Paiste's still probably my favorite though cause I like the stick definition on it
I'm really liking everything I hear on the Paiste 900 series, the stick definition and the high pitch of the bells and real crisp crashes. Probably not my very first choice as the most musical cymbals but they have a very good profile that I think will work well in rock settings and they come in 4 colorsound choices! I'd like to have them as an alternate set of sounds for certain situations. They are on the wish list.
my favorite ride cymbal of all time is paiste signature bright ride. it is very versatile. i wished paiste still made this cymbal. my go to ride is sabian 21 aa rock ride in brilliant finish.
dogmart look up Zildjian z custom mega bell ride sound and that rude destroys metal recordings doesn’t sound great by itself but in a track that thing will cut through any distorted guitar like nothing
Thank you for this demonstration. The 900 and the AAX seemed most versatile. I never understand when watching these demos why the snare and kick is mixed so loud when trying to really hear the cymbal.
Nice collection of cymbals. I recently purchased a Meinl Byzance 22" 'Vintage Pure Light Ride' which I like a lot and is now my 'go to' ride cymbal for most applications. I have a collection of cymbals most of which I acquired used, came along with used drum set purchases, or even found in garage sales (and would you believe I found a few good ones..like Zildjians..out by the road in people's trash!) I have purchased only a few of my collection new at full retail price the Meinl ride being one of them. Tried it out at local drum shop and just had to have it. By the way the finish on that Canopus kit very similar to the Ddrum 'SE Flyer' kit I bought two years ago..I bought the version in the natural ash outer ply finish. Great little kit.
I’ve been fortunate enough to play the Joey Waronker ride at a church I’ve played at and its beautiful. Easily my all time favorite cymbal for riding and crashing. I definitely want one of my own in the future.
I play a Sabian HH medium ride and it does the trick. It has 2 or 3 sweet spots that when you find them it makes the cymbal sing. Love y'alls videos. Keep up the good work
@@kuriza69 I agree. I play right now in a country band and the bell is not utilized as much. Luckily I have a 19" Vault saturation crash from Sabian with a unlathed bell and it does project and sound good so when i need a bell i use it and the crash is rideable as well.
I heard rumors that sabian are going to do to the hhx line what they did to the aax line - split the rides to 3 categories- "thin, medium and heavy" -that could be really interesting@@sneedville80
@@kuriza69 i like Sabian right now thats the only thing I play. However if I had it to do all over again and I had the money to buy over again I would look heavily into Meinl they seem to be doing amazing things with their cymbals and they are not afraid to take risks with their sounds they create. I think Sabian does a good job of making musical cymbals that aren't as bland as zildjians.
@@sneedville80 In my opinion Meinl are very dark, washy and lack stick definition. I prefer high end Paiste. the problem is they don't take custom orders
You guys get the best drum sound. The combination of the room mics and closer mixed drums are amazing. Kind of Albiniesque but the snare sounds even better and better sounding cymbals. Great player too.
Once again, it's the Paiste and Meinl brands that blow me away. They both have these razor sharp overtones that I LOVE to hear. I tend to fall for sharp sounding cymbals and while the dryer cymbals can be so bloody PERFECT for recording, I'm thinking more about performing cymbals on a stage. Sabian and Zildjian might as well just join forces, they sound too similar to me, like "one and the same." The European cymbals are the ones I really like.
Yes, as some of us know, Zildjian is made by one brother, and Sabian by the other. Their father taught them both, but one brother makes Zildjian, and the other Sabian. S, a, and b are the first letters in his children's names, thus Sabian!
The Zildjan was the only “all purpose” ride in my opinion. The Sabian and Paiste were rock/metal/funk rides. The Meinl and Istanbul were jazz/prog/folk rides. I personally liked the Meinl most. But the Z takes the “all purpose” prize.
The Paiste 900 was surprisingly good considering that it is a mid-range product. I would have used the 2002 20" Ride in this comparison. It is a really versatile cymbal. The Istanbul and the Meinl (although I never really fancied them for some weird reason) were the best. The Sabian was lifeless for me and the I felt that the Zildjian was missing a "sound profile". By the way...are you selling Bosphorus as well? They came out with the Philly Joe Jones ride. Others drum shops demoed it and it sounds great, but your videos are usually a lot better sounding than anyone else's.
To my ears, the Meinl rides tend to have a too much integrated sounding bell but many drummer love them obviously. I just kinda used to Zildjian and Sabian distinctively brighter bells even for their darker rides.
I too was surprised the 900 sounded so good. I think it was because it wasn't a colorsound and no paint. I have both the 20 & 22 inch 2002s and use the 20 the most.
Paiste 2002 , 22 inch Ride , Best cymbal ever!!!# better than a 24-inch 'Big Al ride' the Bell is very pronounced and cuts through any music very nicely
The Zildjian A Sweet Ride was my favourite but for all round playing, I tend to like something between the Zildjian and the Istanbul. Dark but with definition, some wash and a nice bell.
Honestly some of the most versatile ride cymbals I've played are the Sabian RBDR's. They're a little heavy, but outside the AA, there's still some complexity to them.
This is fantastic! Keep the "groove" in groove. I met James Brown on a plane one month before he passed away. Now there's some groove! He was wearing a full purple suit with his hair slicked back. In a gentle yet high pitched voice he said hello to me. It was a groovy moment and one I"ll never forget. Keep the passion 🤘🥁🤘DC
Ill take the Sabian Bell sound with the Zildjian Bow sound and the Istanbul edge for crashing lol Each definitely shined in its own area! Really cool to see the different types of stick shape affecting the sound as well, always something to consider! But let’s not pass by that Ludwig Anniversary black beauty snare which stole the show😮🤟🏽
So for me personally, since I’m a church drummer at 2 churches full time… the 24 Joey Warnoker makes my heart all bubbly and happy. It’s sooo washy and buttery just the way I like it!
I've been playing Zildjian cymbals for over 55 years and my Sabian AAX Medium Brilliant is now my favorite ride. I've only owned a few Paiste's and didn't like any of them. By the way, the vintage Zildjian Avedis and the new A-Series have nothing in common, as far as I'm concerned. I own both. I won't say one is better than the other but comparing them is like apples-to-oranges.
@@boomerguy9935 agree, owned the classic Avedis for almost 30 years and I refused to change then with the new ones issued in 2013...they are another planet, period :-)
Nice sounding cymbals, my number one is a 20” Zildjian K Left Side Ride. Perfect for me, ride is midrangey, bell is clear, and I like the sustain or “cushion” afforded by the rivets. It crashes beautifully, too. I favor it over my EAK 22”, Kerope 22”, vintage A 21” Rock ride, vintage A 20” crash ride, and Istanbul 21” Mel Lewis. That’s saying something.
My Opinion : 1: Zildjian 23" Sweet Ride 2: Paiste 900 22" Ride 3: Sabian Brilliant 22" Medium Ride 4: Istanbul Atop Joey Waronker 24" Ride 5: Meinl Byzance 22" Spectrum Ride Keep in mind this is just for the cymbals in the video and not for the actual brands. (Meinl would have been higher.) Also, I personally thought all of the cymbals were really good.
After having owned more than 60 or so ride cymbals and countless crash cymbals, my favorite all-purpose-cymbals are a Dream bliss 22" crash-ride and a Istanbul Agop 20" Om crash Both come with a superb crashed sound and a nice bell. They sound great when taped up as dry jazz rides or when played with rivets. I use them for every style and play them in almost any of my live or studio setups.
Meinl Byzance Dark Spectrum 22'' first choice. Zildjian A sweet 23 was a second. Both could be a ''go to'' Ride for most all situations. I tried to find something that would fit the bill in the other choices, but could not. Wash and tone was thick and low in most of the other cymbals. I use a 22 Flat and a 21 Istanbul agop for everything. Thanks for the 'All-Purpose' showing.
I have both the 21" & 23" Sweet rides I misappropriate them as crashes, however as a primary rock drummer my favorite bell sound sits on top of the Sabian Med Ride
This videos really help the drummers how to pick up the sound they want, just one suggestion, include more standard sizes for example 20 and 21 inches!
I liked that first Paiste. My personal all purpose ride is their 20" Signature Dry Ride. I got it used in 2014, and it was made in 1991. I use it all the time. I can play jazz to metal with it, and can make it work. It has definition, I can "bob" it with the shank on the bow, and if you switch up the stick, new dynamic possibilities are available. It's kind of "semi-dark", and warm, but the dryness gives it some definition. For the jazz I'm using a Regal Tip 7A, and for louder music, Regal Tip Groovers. Between these two sticks I can get a lot out that one cymbal. The last jazz gig I played, the guitarist actually remarked on the attributes of that cymbal. For heavier music I usually go to the Paiste Dry Dark Ride.
I have really liked the Zildjian Sweet Ride since high school and it sounds amazing here. However both the Istanbul Joey Waronker and Mienl Dark Spectrum impressed me. I have looked at several videos of the Istanbul Joey Waronker being played and based on that I would have to try playing the Zildjian and Istanbul both here to make up my mind.
Thanks for another great video DCP. I would love to see demos of paiste rides.Im currently using a 20 k medium ride for my jazz kit and a 21 k hybrid for everything else.Moving more in the direction of paiste.
So many good rides. My favorite is oddly the Meinl Dark Spectrum. Which I had and got rid of. But then again mine didn't have nearly that much wobble and was heavy as a beast.
My ears really perked up when that 22 inch Meinl Byzance Dark Spectrum was played. I would love to hear the swell from a good pair of soft tipped mallets on each of these cymbals. Maybe I am just wired weird but it's easier for me to hear the overall character of a cymbal that way.
All nice cymbals, but the only 2 I'd consider for all around are the sabian and the paiste. I play thrash metal and a Neil Diamond tribute band. I actually got a sweet ride and the next day tried using it for a Neil Diamond gig and the thing was so weak I couldn't even hear it, I returned it the extra day... Not a fan. I'm currently using a Zildjian k hybrid 20" And it's fantastic! I also have a paiste alpha full ride that is extremely similar to the hybrid ride. I'm very interested to try out some of the new sabian aax cymbals! They look and sound like an upgrade from the older ones. I have a sabian aax dark crash that I love, I'm thinking of getting a second one or a 18" aax stage crash.
My go-to ride? Over the years I've been buying and selling and keeping the stuff I love. Haven't tried exactly everything, but... The ride cymbal that has pleased me the most as an allrounder is the Sabian 21" HH Hot Ride. Then there are of course rides which have their respective specialties, but as an allrounder it's gotta be the Hot Ride :)
I really enjoyed the Paiste and was surprised to see it was the lowest cost of the bunch. Well done Paiste!

Honestly some of the most versatile ride cymbals I've played are the Sabian RBDR's. They're a little heavy, but outside the AA, there's still some complexity to them.
Thanks for this test. I played Istanbul Agop 22” Jazz Ride... Amazing Ride !
Ill take the Sabian Bell sound with the Zildjian Bow sound and the Istanbul edge for crashing lol
Each definitely shined in its own area!
Really cool to see the different types of stick shape affecting the sound as well, always something to consider!
But let’s not pass by that Ludwig Anniversary black beauty snare which stole the show😮🤟🏽
So glad there’s finally a video like this! You all have been knocking it out of the park with comparison videos!
So for me personally, since I’m a church drummer at 2 churches full time… the 24 Joey Warnoker makes my heart all bubbly and happy. It’s sooo washy and buttery just the way I like it!
Thanks guys for helping us out when we don’t have the local selection to choose from. Paiste for me
Thanks for watching, Jorge.
The AAX Medium was really impressive to be heard and really the most homogeneous.
But Q/P ratio of semi-pro Paiste 900 is unbeatable
My Opinion :
1: Zildjian 23" Sweet Ride
2: Paiste 900 22" Ride
3: Sabian Brilliant 22" Medium Ride
4: Istanbul Atop Joey Waronker 24" Ride
5: Meinl Byzance 22" Spectrum Ride
Keep in mind this is just for the cymbals in the video and not for the actual brands. (Meinl would have been higher.) Also, I personally thought all of the cymbals were really good.
After having owned more than 60 or so ride cymbals and countless crash cymbals, my favorite all-purpose-cymbals are a
Dream bliss 22" crash-ride and a
Istanbul Agop 20" Om crash
Both come with a superb crashed sound and a nice bell. They sound great when taped up as dry jazz rides or when played with rivets. I use them for every style and play them in almost any of my live or studio setups.
The bass drum sounded so good i could not focus
Meinl Byzance Dark Spectrum 22'' first choice. Zildjian A sweet 23 was a second. Both could be a ''go to'' Ride for most all situations. I tried to find something that would fit the bill in the other choices, but could not. Wash and tone was thick and low in most of the other cymbals. I use a 22 Flat and a 21 Istanbul agop for everything. Thanks for the 'All-Purpose' showing.
Nice to know my ride made the list! The 22 Spectrum is such a beast.
The A Sweet Ride sounds amazing.
The bell on that Sweet Ride is amazing.
My favourite of this bunch is the Istanbul Agop 24” Joey Waronker signature model. Least favourite for me was the Paiste 900 series.
I have the Zildijain A Sweet 23". It has been a great all around ride.
I wasn't expecting the Joey Waronker ride, he has good taste of cymbals!
I really liked the sound of the Zildjian
OMG! The Big Istanbul Agop sounds fantastic! Now that is a fantastic Ride Cymbal!
I’m digging the Meinl-stick definition and wash seem well balanced. Nicely done review-thx.👍
I like the first cmybal, your snare sounds great, did you tune it herself.
Nothing sounds better to my ears than the Zildjian A custom !
The Zildjian A cymbals are my go-to ones. But, that Paiste really sounded good. Price was decent too.
Tom, I would love to see a comparison of rock/metal ride cymbals, with the huge bells! I know there are many on the market.
Paiste 900 for rock and the Zildjian for everything else. Go with both.
Man y’all got that snare sounding perfect.
Sabian 22". Nice drumming- great video.
Thanks, Alex. We appreciate it!
That Paiste,...such a pleasing sound. That wins for me -- then to contrast it the Meinl,..then the Zildjian.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE Paiste 900 22'!!!!! it's AWESOME! saving money for it...
This video introduced me to the 900 series, thank you!
But then again mine didn't have nearly that much wobble and was heavy as a beast.
love the kit your playing on! I like the Paiste 900 Series 22" ride! fyi
Paiste 900 💥 especially for rock. Clean sounding ping n bell.
I love my meinl 20" ride , got it for a bargain at my local music store :) Awesome vid ty :)
Thanks for watching!
The Zildjian Sweet did it for me.
Paiste Traditional 22” Lite Ride is my go to/end all around choice. 😎👍
Amazing ride!
I’m normally a Sabian guy, but I would have to go with the Sweet ride..
Great demo....Should have thrown in a 24"paiste 2002...but great demo.
Love that AAX Bell!👌
That snare... damn!!!!
