I don't think you can go wrong with Paiste, Zildjian or Sabian, depending on the particular cymbal, for sure. Sabians are basically Zildjians as improved by dearly departed Robert Zildjian in the Canadian plant he received in the lawsuit against his brother. But, Sabian did their own thing, for sure too. Sabian is an anagram he and his wife figured out from their kids, Sally, Billy and Andy.
I loved the Paiste! Seems like the best all-rounder, and the bell sounded great! Istanbul sounded great when just used as a ride in the traditional sense, and not used for crashing.
#1 Zildjian cuts bright, bell also bright, clear sticking. Not a good crash ride. #2 Paiste cuts lower in tone, clear sticking bright bell. Not a good crash ride #3 Meinl cuts lowest tonally, very clear sticking, bell low tonally. Could crash ride #4 Sabian standard cut, sticking washy, brighter bridge, bell mid range. Much more of a crash ride #5 Istanbul agop standard cut, pleasent sticking, bell blended in, mid range tone. Great crash ride My humble opinions are based on your title. Best "Rock" ride cymbals. Everyone's ears and preferences will come into play here. However, how very lucky we are as drummer's to have a channel like DCP to provide us with video comparison's like this. Thank you guys so much from your fellow drumming community 🥁🤘
Jetty 1502 zildjian custom hybrid ride is much more of a crash ride than the Sabian raw bell dry is. The sabian with its heavy weight, flat profile, and smaller bell just doesn’t crash that well
I own the K hybrid 21 and the Sabian Hh raw bell dry ride. The k hybrid is more open and loud, the bell sound is clearing and cats. The Sabian is more mellow but as a beautiful sound. The bell on the Paste is superb.
I think the Zildjian was hands down the best at crashing. It was way louder and brighter than what I'd expect from a K series cymbal, which tend to be darker and lower volume. But it *IS* a K _Custom_ , which means it's going to be experimental and different. I thought the Istanbul had the most complex sound as a pure ride cymbal, and it's crash sound was _OK_ . But it's bell sound was kinda odd. Its bell sounds kinda like an old school alarm clock! Maybe the Istanbul isnt ideal for pure rock music(??), but good for jazz.... The Paiste was nice, and would work well as a rock ride. I thought the Sabian HH raw bell one was equally nice. The Meinl ride doesn't have a very good crash capacity, but was adequate at riding.. it's bell sound was good.
@@HighlanderNorth1 Yes, I heard that good analysis, ride cymbals are all different, even within the same exact model sometimes. For me they are the real ear candy on a drum set. I am always looking for cool ones that fill a niche for me.
My favorite rock ride is the Meinl serpents ride. My favorite all around ride of all time is the Meinl polyphonic ride but if you want a loud rock ride with a crazy loud bell with great stick definition and still have crashability the serpents ride is where it’s at! The polyphonic ride has a raw bell but it’s still defined and bright and the crashability is the best ever on that ride.
This segment is wicked important! I love that Paiste reflector the best. But please try the 22" Meinl soundcaster fusion, with the raw part on it a little. One of the best ride cymbals I EVER heard!!
I'm a Sabian guy but that Zildjian K Custom hybrid!! I'm in love! Should of done the Sabian 21 AA rock ride.. perfect rock ride. Just ask Chad Smith and Ray Luzier...
Naw, sabian aax metal ride is their best, but truth be known Sabian really needs to beef up their powerful rides, they don't have the powerful bells like Zildjian does, or paiste does for that matter. That's why the serious metal players use Paiste, they are the best tools for that job. My heart is with Sabian, I started using them when they first came out, so they will always be MY 💖 brand, but I'm not in denial.
Paiste for sure. All of them sounded great (Meinl close second) but the Paiste had articulate sticking action, piercing bell and a beautiful ambient crash.
They all sound good in their own way. I own about 12 Paiste, Sabian and Zildjian rides. I might sell 2-3 eventually. I find it helps to carry a few of your favorite cymbals for comparison in a cymbal bag with your desired sticks when checking out new or used ones in the store. Sometimes one that catches your ear in the store might be redundant to what you have already, or fall flat against what you have on the kit at home. I have bought probably 4-5 cymbals over the years I thought were nice or even great in the store, but just didn't quite measure up at home. Also, every cymbal is different. I have two 20" Zildjian flat top rides that sound very different, but both are super cool in their own way. I put those on two different kits as they fill the function(s) best for a given set up (the particular drum kit, the genres being played, their mix with other cymbals, suitability for live gigs or recording, etc.). For example, one flat top has a warm, gentle, compressed, low volume but distinct ping for recording soft passages in a song, while the other is brighter, louder, clearer, and more shimmery for live playing and has a more generic, classic ride tone (picked it up used for only $75 in excellent condition). It amazes me how two of the same Zildjian flat top 20" rides can sound so different, but both be useful depending upon the application, and their mix in the context of other cymbals on various kits.
I really liked the Zildjian K Custom Hybrid,..probably my favorite of the bunch. Then a toss up between the Paiste and the Meinl for #2,...and the Istanbul which had the most unique tone of the bunch.
I own a 20 k custom IT’s everything Great bell. Stick articulation. Wash crash. Can sound mellow if played right. After crash stick articulation comes right back.
My 21” KCH isn’t really dark at all. It has a nice low shimmer when crashed lightly. Mine is over 3000 grams and it still crashes well. It cuts like a MF with that amazing bell.
That’s why they made it, it’s a balance between the great articulation and cut of bright crashes, and the great dark bell sound you get from the classic dark K cymbals
I cant believe how well the meinl dark ride sounds, with such a huge hammer pattern. Now you could also add the Zildjian S dark ride, if it weren't sold in a pack!
As a life long (and very happy) Sabian player, I have to say that the Paiste and Meinl rides sounded the best for this particular application to me. Not that the other offerings were bad, but the sound I would want for solid rock playing was exemplified in both of those cymbals. I have to say I am becoming more and more intrigued by Meinl cymbals in general.
😕 I've had a somewhat negative opinion of Sabian cymbals, because of the _extreme_ dislike I had for the very 1st crash cymbal I ever owned. It was a Sabian B8 of roughly 18" that came with my first drum set(an old worn out kit that I bought in 1994 for $200 with stands and 3 newer cymbals). The 14" Paiste hi hats included with that set were very thick and clanky, but they were acceptable. However, the Sabian B8 crash sounded so bad that I cringed every time I hit it. I tried to avoid using a crash because of how bad that cymbal sounded! About 2-3 months later, I bought a new Pearl Export series 5 piece set, but used up all my extra money on it. So, again, I was stuck with those same cymbals. Then I moved in 1995, and wasn't able to play drums where I moved to, so I sold the set. It wasn't til 2004 that I got a new Sonor kit, with an entry level Zildjian cymbal set(ZHT or ZBT, I don't recall which). All of them sounded immensely better than that Sabian B8 crash. Since then I've heard quite a few Sabian cymbals I like, mostly HHX. The Sabian HH ride ^here sounds pretty nice.
I just ordered the Paiste Bell Ride, to me its just the perfect sound, but I have to admit the Meinl sounds really good to me too. If I wasn't so in love with Paiste, I would probably go Meinl.
Good video, nice to see someone doing Rock Rides. Another KILLER Rock/Hard-Rock/Metal ride to check out is the Zildjian A Custom Rezo Ride... Very articulate and defined ping that's very cutting without being offensive. It's VERY clean and musical, and blends well with out overpowering. Absolute ear candy. check it out if you can find one, I've seen them for cheap because I don't think people know what they have
I’m a Sabian guy but I should say that PA Meinl and Istambul are amazing!!!! I think HH ride you used for comparison is not the correct one... I would have chosen AAX 21” Raw bell dry ride or AAX 20” X-Plosion ride... regards from Mexico!!!
Another great video! What's missing (and it's important) is the gram weights of all of these. Gram weight helps you identify that "sweet spot" you like in a cymbal. And, with some manufacturers, certain models can have quite a bit of gram weight difference (within the same model), thus making them sound different from cymbal to cymbal.
When I buy a ride cymbal online if I can’t verify the weight I simply won’t buy it. There enough examples here on YT that if you find a sound file of a cymbal within 20 grams they should sound very similar.
I liked the Meinl Cymbals Classics Custom Dark Ride 22” but for dark Rock. It's not a "sweet" sounding as all the other rides but I feel like the pitch is lower but without being almost in audible like some big thick rides are. I thought of "Come As You Are" Dave Grohl style with that.
Imo having stick definition with a nice bell along with crashability is one of main points of a ride being versatile. But that’s just me and what I look for. It’s not versatile to me if it doesn’t have crashability for what I need a ride for. Imo the meinl polyphonic ride is the most versatile ride I’ve ever played but that Sabian one is pretty nice too
I own the Sabian HH raw bell dry Ride 21and first notice for me will be the Zildjian K Custom Hybrid Ride 21! Although the other 12 cymbals are Sabian HHX Evolution... Nah, i'll stay with Sabian:).
The K Custom seemed to have the most middle of the road characteristics in terms of wash/ping/bell/crash, which is why it's my favourite of the bunch. (Still not as great as the A Custom Medium I have, but anywho). The others are all better in other areas but lack in certain ways, like have a better bell but the crash is too gong-y etc, so of those 5 the K was the most well-rounded.
Observation #1: Years ago I was the first drummer in the local rock and punk scene to buy a K Custom ride. The bell and the ping were great, but the "dinner plate" wash kept it from being perfect. Looks like Zildjian finally solved that dilemma. And it only took 30+ years! Observation #2: Is there any doubt from the retailer and peanut gallery that the CCD's are the greatest bargain in all of cymbal manufacturing right now? It's a good thing Meinl is hitting on these because someone in Germany needs to throw them back on to Mr. Rodgers Trolley OUT of the Land of Make Believe where you price your Euro-style cymbals at the same price point as the 2002's, and expect to win in the marketplace.
Seems odd the picked several dark rides for rock. Usually people use bright cymbals for rock. Not saying it won’t work but the darker lines tend to have less volume and don’t cut through like bright one. Just an observation.
I love Paiste, but not a huge fan of their ride cymbals. I used this video to get my K Custom Hybrid. Overall best in stick def., bell, and crashability.
Wow I am going with the Sabian....2.Paiste 3.Istanbul and I'm a Zildjian guy! but to my ears I do not care for the high overtones produced from the Zildjian hybrid, at least here.
I think most will be drawn to the Paiste, however, that distinct tone of their alloy and design does not blend well with other manufacturers. I don't like to mix brands but it is possible to do so with most i.e. Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl etc. Given that, I recommend and own the K hybrid. At that, the particular one I possess is heavier that the norm so it is undisputedly my go to "Rock Ride"! Looking and sounding good Tony!
That is a very sweet K Custom Hybrid Ride. I like the stick sound of the Istanbul Agop Raw Ride, but the bell just doesn't do it for me; too sedate and "blendy." Thanks DCP for these awesome comparison videos, it's very helpful to hear gear compared directly to other gear in the same space, recorded the same way.
I think I like the Istanbul the best, and the Meinl the least (by far). The Paiste and Sabian are a tie for me as a close second to the Istanbul. The Istanbul's crash sound is was sold me as to why it's my favorite of this bunch. Nice selection of ride cymbals.
If I was getting one, I'd get the K Custom because of the crash. Best for clanging along to a hard rock beat: Meinl or Paiste. Most character: Agop. I've generally used and been satisfied with Sabians, but that one is the worst of the lot.
The Paiste hands down.
Just one preference
Playing PAISTE Signature Reflector Bell Ride 22" for more than 10 years already. Stunning cymbal!
It’s a toss up between the paiste and the k custom hybrid. I’d take both of them!
Proud owner of the Paiste. Unbelievable cymbal.
the paiste has a savage bell.
I own the k hybrid. Depending on the stick it's a pretty versatile cymbal.!!! Love the bell on the paiste.
I always listen to this paiste signature... and I always fall in love....
I've always been a Zildjian fanboy up until recently. Paiste always blows my mind in bright and cutting stuff
Ясен-красен что эстонцы лучше 🎉😂

#1 Zildjian cuts bright, bell also bright, clear sticking. Not a good crash ride.

The HH RBDR is my favorite. I also would recommend the AA version of the raw bell series.
3:05 K Custom Hybrid
3:18 Signature Reflector Bell
OMG! That Meinl! OMG! The Paiste! You know what? ALL of them had great sounds.
Paiste Bell with Zildjian body!!
Luiz Gustavo Schneider or with Sabian body. I like the slight trash.
I own the K hybrid 21 and the Sabian Hh raw bell dry ride. The k hybrid is more open and loud, the bell sound is clearing and cats. The Sabian is more mellow but as a beautiful sound. The bell on the Paste is superb.
Paiste is the Best! Awesome!!
I love my Paiste Powerslave bell ride! It sounds and look amazing!

1. Paiste

The Zildjian has a beautiful high frequency that appears about 3/4 into the full hit. None of the other's have it. It's such a sweet sound.

@@adamfrost8417 I think so ha ha.
I like the reflector best also
That is a very sweet K Custom Hybrid Ride. I like the stick sound of the Istanbul Agop Raw Ride, but the bell just doesn't do it for me; too sedate and "blendy."
Thanks DCP for these awesome comparison videos, it's very helpful to hear gear compared directly to other gear in the same space, recorded the same way.
For the money, the Meinl is amazing. My "rock" ride is a 21" AAX Stage Ride, but I also really like the 20" A Custom Ping Ride.
I don't understand this 'for the money' thing...Like, "This cymbal sounds great, it's actually better than many others, but it doesn't cost 450 euros"
I think I like the Istanbul the best, and the Meinl the least (by far). The Paiste and Sabian are a tie for me as a close second to the Istanbul. The Istanbul's crash sound is was sold me as to why it's my favorite of this bunch.
Nice selection of ride cymbals.
I´d take Sabian over the others. Thanks guys!
Game over right out of the gate, K Custom.
All are great
Great video. Thanks for the comparison.

If I was getting one, I'd get the K Custom because of the crash. Best for clanging along to a hard rock beat: Meinl or Paiste. Most character: Agop. I've generally used and been satisfied with Sabians, but that one is the worst of the lot.
