The polyphonic has been my favorite! I still want a "real" ride but this thing does a pretty awesome job at being my crash/ride. If I want it more 'pingy' I just slap a piece of gaff tape on it!
His collection of cymbals sold would pay my rent for half a year or more but he's an endorsed artist they sent him a large amount and likely with no cost to him and I'm sure being a member of I Prevail didn't hurt either most of us today will never have it like this social media had made sure of that alit think it's made it better but it hasn't only chance to easily profit is like this a youtube channel but takes a lot of time and slot of money to do that as well. With the year at best I've got left my gear will be out of pocket will bring no profit only music to leave my wife and child as My Legacy and most definitely will in no way be Meinl not on my budget LoL
By the way allow me to inject one more thing no one will ever say as young as he is he hasn't earned his endorsement he's done multitudes of videos and at 47 yrs old now even I have learned from some of them myself but like many that reach a certain level and like Metallica lose the hunger they had to get to where their making money and once they do they don't try as hard anymore not sure if that's happened to him or last I haven't really watched many of his videos anymore but I do know the second album from I Prevail in my opinion was an example of that definitely lacked in several areas and often that comes with making a decent profit off the first but it's easy to strive to be the best when you are trying to get paid once you have it's not so necessary to try as hard but when labels see that your not as big in the next release that money slows down as well and slot of artists go through it fast and just end up in debt and can't climb back up a second time at my age I've seen it happen alot too much actually and have done it myself and at my age not even trying to be a success I just love the music and playing it and have some amazing cymbals even I can afford and sound as good or possibly better in the studio time will tell sorry for the length to everyone I tend to ramble these days but I've got a year at best so if I think it's worth saying I'm going to say it LoL
21" Transitions, 21" Polyphonics, 22" Darks & 22" Foundry Reserve Lights are the "BIG 4" here to be honest. Gonna have my hands on them one day. Great content as always, Gabe!
This was probably one of the most useful comparison videos. It's really helped me realise which kind of ride I want. Currently on the transition but I know I want a heavy ride now. Thanks! 😊
If anyone here is like me and is very, very far away from being able to afford Meinl Byzance check out Zultan cymbal. No, they're not on the same level in most cases but still hand made Turkish B20 cymbals for your family man, hobbyist type. Many of them are damn close though and about 1/3 of the cost
I was looking away from my phone and I was thinking “wow that ride sounds amazing!” Turns out it was the cheapest one at $80. I was very pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the video!
Dual Crash Rides are better served as a crash considering they explode and get out of the way. The attack is noticeable because of this and you can hear the attack strokes when recorded.
Great video, I just considered that the recording could be more focused on the ride, probably isolated ride sound at some point of the execution. I’ve the 22 heavy hammered and a 21 Meinl Foundry proof extra dry heavy bell ride (prototype)
The classic custom darks sound amazing to me. That dual crash ride is certainly more of a crash / jazz ride I felt. It would be awesome to find something affordable that can do it all.
This is such a great video, love the photo transitions between cymbals so I can really see the difference, plus just great overall quality of video production. Thanks!
Same the cheapest one sounded the best to me I accidentally got my hands on a Meinl 18 crash ride that I use as a ride over Sabian and zildjian I never would have though it’s Meinl bcs I can’t even find those in store but i would love to get the bigger ride for this Meinl 18” for cymbal work
As a metal drummer I found that Meinly lacks a great mega bell ride. The classics custom mega bell doesn't sound good at all. I'll stick with the Sabian HH powerbell. Meinl needs to bring back the soundcaster custom mega bell or make a Byzance mega bell
Great video, I just considered that the recording could be more focused on the ride, probably isolated ride sound at some point of the execution. I’ve the 22 heavy hammered and a 21 Meinl Foundry proof extra dry heavy bell ride (prototype)
First. Finally someone does a ride comparison and actually crashes them. I've been hunting for a new ride, this video helped a lot. I'll have to watch it 10 more times.... It's amazing how good meinls lower-priced cymbals sound.
The mini skit in the beginning had me dying 🤣 Started checking out I Prevails discography and I really dig it man, there’s so much cool stuff in your guys’ library, rock on dude. Should do a short skating video sometime!
I picked up a Meinl Byzance Vintage Pure 22" light ride cymbal a couple of years ago. Rather dry with a lot of stick definition but it has enough 'wash' to be useful in a variety of musical applications and it crashes well. Meinl has come a long way and they have quite a variety of quality cymbals in their line up now. The Vintage Pure ride has become my favorite ride cymbal in my collection.
This video ist just killer, Gabe!!! Thanks for that! Can you do a video with hi-hats by any chance? That would be beautiful! Some of you might agree with me that the hi-hat can be very difficult to choose :)
The problem with most rides is I feel like they sound way too “big” when you lay into the side of them. I ordered the sweet k 21 because all the reviews talked about it being a nice crash. But when I played it, it took over and sounded bad.
@blank I’m Just now seeing this reply sorry man. I ended up getting the hhx thin ride 21” . It’s pretty good for what I was looking for. Seems like all the drummers I like ( superheaven being a good example ) use the Meinl byzance traditional though. I might get one of those in the future
I think these videos are fun, but not that educational. You need to play a ride in a room to really get the feel. Even play it with the band or song if possible. Long story short: go to your local drum shop!
Do you think that higher pitched/brighter sounding cymbals are inherently bad at recording? I mean, for recording purposes, should we be looking for darker sounding rides?
I wonder why meinl doesn't make a dual crash with a lathed bell option? Cuz the raw bell on that cymbal is sonically nonexistent. Beautiful sounding crash though.
It’s all so expensive. I just bought a few Meinl crashes and I’m going to return them because the money is just too much. Sure, you get these easily, probably at no cost to you, but for out of pocket people it really isn’t cheap, at all. Some of us will never have all those cymbals you have but then one day some of us might have way more.
They are the most inconsistent cymbals of all the major competing brands. You literally have to try ten of each of the same model to get an idea of what it's intended to actually sound like and then choose only one because the other 9 are not gonna cut it. They are also the most expensive which doesn't make any sense to me. But once you do find the one then nothing else on the market competes.
I absolutely love the Meinl Duals. I have two of the 20” Dual crash/rides but use them strictly as dedicated crashes. I also have the 22” Dual crash/ride that is used as the “big finish” far right side crash. I also managed to get my hands on one of the early pre-production prototype model Dual 22” rides. It’s considerably heavier than the crash/ride and has a much larger bell. It has, for me, the perfect balance of stick definition, wash, and a bell that will harm you if you stand too close.
Hey Gabe. Was wondering if you’ve ever played on the Meinl Byzance 22” Jazz Thin Ride? To me it has the perfect stick articulation mixed with a very thin, dark crashable dynamic.
The jazz rides are great and the thinner lighter ones make for amazing thunderous dark big crashes as well but their weaknesses are the bells. The bells are just way too washy and nonexistent but some people like that. For my live show ride for my band I like a defined bright pingy bell but still have crashability. The polyphonic is the best thing Meinl has for this description. Zildjian’s sweet ride and sabian’s evolution rides are all great too but the Meinl polyphonic is def my favorite ride of all time. I have a jazz medium thin ride and it’s great for a practice ride tho
I am sure that this list is comprised of the current catalog, but one of my favorite rides was the 22" Dark Raw Bell Ride. Meinl did make a foundry proof dual ride, which was my absolute favorite. I bought it from Memphis and it had the raw bell, the right amount of ping and was just a phenominal versatile ride. But limited on stock and they didn't pursue the concept into production. It was lathed on the outer edge like the Dual Crash Ride, but the inner portion was the dark hammering.
@@TheDarkerWalrus I can play it with heavier music but the bell is just so unique. It's not a crashable ride but that raw bell just is so profound. It has weight at around 3600g so it can cut and give a ping, but it doesn't last. Get in and get out.
From the ones you tested I probably like 20" sand and 21"polyphonic the most. Good definition, clear bell sound but not protruding, and crashes very well.

Ghost ride was my favorite!
My favorite is the transition ride with a close follow up in the sand ride. Will you do hats next? ;-)
My 22" sand ride is probably the best ride choice I've got until Meinl comes out with a medium thin traditional ride closer to Zildjians K light ride
The polyphonic has been my favorite! I still want a "real" ride but this thing does a pretty awesome job at being my crash/ride. If I want it more 'pingy' I just slap a piece of gaff tape on it!
Foundry reserve all day
That intro had me straight up Lolling. Bravo gabe. 😂🙏🏼
Haha thanks brooo ❤️
making the hcs sound so so sweet?? pure sorcery
That heavy hammered ride was fantastic, if only I had the money for such a beautiful cymbal. Same with the Ghost Ride (go Brann!).
Where'd you get the music from Gabe?
fav at 6:20
Gabe you should do a video on all your pants that you wear.
Just buy skinny jeans and rip a whole in them
Has meinl seen this video?
I don't know if it's the microphone but the hcs sound surprisingly good
The bronze ones sound great in person too!
I mean 2 of your cymbals are more expensiv than my whole drumset😂 anyways great video and great editing!!!

Spend money on cymbals and snares as these make your sound as many gigs will have a shared back line
well you could hammer it but it won’t do jack

Trying to figure out how to pronounce Byzance without looking silly. Anybody know where I can find a video of someone pronouncing it?
What about the Vintage Pure? I would love to hear it in the comparison!
Those are really awesome as well! Very light, crushable, and pretty darn quiet!
I liked HCS Medium Heavy Ride 20’’ and Classics Custom Dark Ride 22’’
Man that polyphonic ride is a dream, foundry reserve is beautiful too
Agreed! Both are my favorites for sure!

Heavy: Meinl HCS Bronze 20" Heavy Ride - 1:35
Medium: Meinl HCS 22" Bronze Medium Ride 3:39

love these small skits gabe😂would love to see more skits like mino-lisa. GREAT WORK!!!!!
The Meinl-Lisa has requested to be in more videos and I could never turn her down!!

Meinl are great but I've been playing sabien aax hhx for 20 years so never going to give them up but I can see me adding a few meinl to the mix

What about zildjian or sabian
(I don't know how to right sabian)
He probably won't do that since he is sponsored by Meinl
Very true! Plus, I'm just the most familiar with Meinl at this point.
I play the Istanbul Radiant sweet ride 20 inch.
As said, one sweet ride
