One of my splashes inverted itself at some time when I was playing outside. I reverted it, but one of my band members kept inverting it afterwards, because he liked that sound more then the original.
I missed the option of muffling the cymbals using two magnets (for instance those from Meinl). It's a great way of muffling and you can experiment easily looking for the right sound by moving them around the surface. Works great for my ride.
Dude. Using a pair of fast crash cymbals as hi hats is unconventionally brilliant. Love stacking the splashes as well. And goofing with your set is like putting a capo on a guitar, you'll play new things. Genius.
I really like the kitchen towel trick, if only it didn't look so ridiculous lol. I find myself in live situations in smaller room, where we want to maintain the energy of a rockin' live show but the result is just cymbals smashing everything else. Perhaps a tan towel, custom cut to each cymbal size could get the effect in small rooms without looking so shoddy.
I bet if you had some leather circles cut out to fit they'd mute even better... Cut them with a smaller diameter than the cymbals to reduce the amount of muting....
About 1:33 . A free way to do that is simply put tape on the threads. Any tape will do but gaffers tape might be better so it doesn't leave any glue residue. Other than that cool video
The kitchen towel on the ride shortens the sustain of it very nicely will have to try that myself thank you. also reminded me of the chain on the ride, so much inspiration for things from this.
I am a begginer drums enthusiast. I recognized at same time The sound of the inverted Splash. I knew The sound but did not know wich cymbal did it. Amazing video!!
I’m not a drummer but i really like this videos so much because i love drumms. Epic content, keep it coming ☺️❤️ by the way you look like Rick Astley 😎
Gaffer tape can also be used as bell protection if you get stuck. And as a cymbal mute. Use gaffer 'loops' to dull both heads and cymbals, it works a treat!
What a great video! I loved these tips! I have tried adding a splash in random places but it never sounded how I wanted, but I didn’t think about some of these other possibilities, so I am definitely going to be playing around with all my cymbals in the coming days 👹
you mentioned, that many hesitate to invert the cymbals bc they fear to break the cymbals ... even broken cymbals are very interesting sometimes, not only for stacking ... Steve Gadd already did this in the 70s ... there are even videos of him playing the big stage with Paul Simon where he uses a broken ride cymbal where roughly 1/5 to 1/4 of the cymbal is broken of
I had a drummer one time do your Splash trick, but use an FX splash and keep them together pretty tightly, and it sounded almost EXACTLY like a midi "clap" sound. It was a really cool way to get that trashy fakey sounding 👏👏👏 that you hear sometimes in hip hop music, and as an effect.
I have been trying to work on my push pull technique. Couldn't find a lesson about it on the site. Hope you guys can make one. Great video by the way. Keep them coming!
for the muffling, I think it'd be interesting for recording do one take of the song with tape on the cymbals and then another with towels or something on the drums and mix them together

Don’t really know if this comment has been made already, if yes, I’m sorry! But… I have been told that using duct tape to muffle cymbals is actually somewhat “dangerous” since it prevents the cymbals from swinging as freely as they naturally would. By interrupting this “natural swinging wave” the cymbals can easily crack. That being said, I’m more of a hard hitter, so maybe that’s a difference. What I did in a live situation where my cymbals were too loud: I used Moongels close to the bells to dampen them a bit. Worked really great!
Using Moongels on cymbals is something I have also done to great effect. I like it better than tape for a few reasons. It is easier to move around to different spots on the cymbal and to take off all together when doing studio work. If it leaves any sort of residue, which it usually doesn't, it is easy to wipe off (I use Trick drum polish for that typically). And of course, moving a Moongel from a cymbal to a different cymbal, or from a cymbal to a drum only takes a few seconds so, it is easy to use, versatile, and for my preferences provides the right amount of dampening. Cool to see other people using this technique as well!
Yeah, we use tapes or blankets to make drum sounds dry and tighter and why don’t we do it to cymbals? This video gave me some keys to new sounds. Thanks so much!
Even though It does work to put tapes on your cymbals, I tried it when I needed some muffling for studio work, it not so great idea because it’s really hard to take it back down. A specially if you forget it there, after a while it becomes impossible to peal it off, and leaves a mark on the cymbal. If you wanna maybe sell the cymbal or replace it it doesn’t look so good. I prefer to let them ring or yeah sometimes use a towel or a small piece of cloth to take it down a bit.
Your kit sounds like a dream. BTW the bath tub chain is something I've been using since 1978. Works best at thicker rides, like the 20" Zildjian ride I bought back then (and still use :-))
interesting vid. I've heard of cloth for drum but not cymbals. I could see using cloth on cymbals though for quieter practice, but otherwise, nah. I've heard of moongel too, but haven't tried it. I think it would tame certain frequencies, and would depend on placement on the surface.
Have the same towels, they look rad. Do they sound vintage of I don't wash them after cleaning my plates? Would love to convert my generic cheap cymbals and add some original patina :D
I sometimes use both of my 10" splash cymbals to make a stack, but it never sounded good. It always sounded dead. I might try inverting one of them and see what difference it makes! Thanks for the tip!
one of my favorites is bottom china 15" to 18" Top splash 8" to 10", now i have 15" sabian xtreme china bottom and the splash 10" from max stax also sabian top in a remote hihat pedal... really great, the china from the max stax 10" bottom have a 8" splash arborea top also like a hihat but in just one cymbal stand.
OMG! I can't thank u enough. I have just bought a China cymbal which sounds pretty good. However I was looki g for a trashy sound and mine does not sound as trashy as I would like it to. After placing a dodgy cymbal on top of the other...WoW, the trashy sound arises from hell. Still not perfect, but I am getti g Closer to what I was looking for. Maybe a lighter or smaller Splash Will do the job si ce the cymbal on top is quite large and heavy
oooof... i was experimenting since 2013... doing my own mini hats.. dry af splashes.. hammering down my old hats to a high (top) pitch and bottom (low) pitch chinas converted my old 20" ride to a darker china then went to pair it with the old high top hat now china then i thought it was a close enough to Luke's bullet stack...
try putting ball bearings inside your hi-hat and keep it closed for obvious reasons it might create a unique sound im not a drummer though and i dont have a set to try it out
Hey I have a Idea Can you try to make a Drumset whats Sounds Like Darkthrone on The Last Album Fenriz is a very awsome Drummer and He Had a Lot of Sounds but i Like The one from The lates Album The Most

I have an inverted splay with a regular splash ontop as a stack and it is super quick and cutting

Zultan cymbals are incredible!!! First time seeing a big channel like yours using them, it's great!!!

Those Zultan cymbals sounds pretty dang good, mate

Nice to see some love for Zultan!

In my experience, cymbals wear through tape pretty quickly, though.
Yes brother ! The inverted splash cymbal / stacked on a China…seriously just changed my sonic landscape. THNAK YOU.
Great! Have fun playing around with this idea! :)
The kitchen towel on the ride shortens the sustain of it very nicely will have to try that myself thank you. also reminded me of the chain on the ride, so much inspiration for things from this.

Your kit sounds like a dream.
BTW the bath tub chain is something I've been using since 1978. Works best at thicker rides, like the 20" Zildjian ride I bought back then (and still use :-))
I freaked out when he inverted that splash.
I yelled so loud my wife called from the other room, asking what's wrong.
Lol!
I can’t bring myself to do it. I paid enough for that splash to make me reluctant to break it. Maybe after a while I’ll get over my hang up.
