Pygmy puffs or puffskeins of each house colour, since that would be very cute and definitely reads, "Safest school ever" because we're already misleading people with that, why not mislead people with the mascots too?
I always thought that each founder chose their patronus as their house’s mascot. That would make the animal relate to the specific founder over the traits of their house, good and bad.
No it wouldn't. Your Patronus is a representation of your secret self, a part of you that is hidden but which is brought to light in extreme circumstances. Rarely does a Patronus reflect one's favourite animal or the animal most like their outward personality, and such a case reflect's one inability or unwillingness to hide their secret self and comfortability showing who they truly are. That's why I like the idea of the house mascots being their Patronuses and Ravenclaw's being a raven - one of Ravenclaw's valued traits is individuality and Rowena would embody that and not have a secret self and so her Patronus would be reflective of her personality, and the raven is the most intelligent bird.
Slytherin: i'll go with a snake because i can talk to them. Gryffindor: i'll go with a lion because they represent my values, and also they are awesome Hufflepuff: i'll go with badgers because of what they represent. I also find them cute. Ravenclaw: egle
J and Ben made an entire video on Ravenclaw's eagle. Apparently, "raven claw" is either Old English or Early Modern English for the "black claw" of an eagle.
I personally think each one has different rules. Gryffindor picked Lion to represent his ideals and the tie-in with his namesake. Slytherin picked Snake because he’s a Parselmouth. Hufflepuff picked Badger because they represent her ideals, because their commonality would match her willingness to accept all students, and honestly because I think she’d be the type to think they’re adorable. Ravenclaw’s is a bit more complicated (which is in character for her); I’ll bet that her family were Falconers (Eaglers?), raising and training hunting birds. That would be the origin of a name like Ravenclaw - people still have the surname Faulkner with the same origin. (I think you talked about that in another video?) Edits: But the Patronus / Animagus theory makes just as much sense. Heck, my reasons could be part of why they would have the corresponding Patronus.
I don't know about Rowena Ravenclaw being a woman from a family of falconers. The name is Ravenclaw for a reason. It's not falconclaw or anything like that. If she lived when she was young in the glen or in the valleys in more common language and there were eagles everywhere, she could have chosen that bird for that reason. Also, Ravenclaw sounds like a nickname more than anything. It might have to do with her dark coloured hair.

I think they choose non-magical animals so that it would be easier to disguise Hogwarts as a normal school when muggles see a Hogwarts uniform or merch owned by children.
Another idea is since a lot of the people who came to the school would be muggleborns who haven't experienced the community (doesn't really hold up with Slytherin but again he was able to talk to snakes so he's an outlier no matter what) it could have been to make the transition between the two worlds easier with animals they are familiar with

My headcanon was always that they were the Patronuses of the Founders, which would explain why they were connected to each founder. Plus it would mean that Slytherin having a snake and Gryffindor having a lion (aka 1/2 of a griffin) was just pure coincidence which is kinda hilarious. Just imagine Slytherin casting a Patronus for the first time and a huge snake jumps out and the other founders are just cracking up because "of course it's a snake! Slytherin! Slither like a snake!"
Your impersonation of the founders made me want to read an entire fanfiction about it! it was sooo good. It also kinda reminded me of the marauders which I find so cool 😊
6:57 - 7:01 "Actually, Scotland sent an owl this morning, and it looks like they've called dibs on unicorns." This should not be as funny as it is.... 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It can’t be a coincidence that both Potions masters we know were Slytherins and the bowl of Hygieia (a snake twined around a cup) is a symbol of pharmacy - muggle potion making.
I also like the thought of Slytherin being a pharmacist/healer. (They didn't really differentiate the professions at that time.) The snake would fit really well in there. And the Slytherin common room, being near the potions classroom is also fitting. And potion ingredients would stay fresh for longer periods in the colder cellar/dungeons of Hogwarts. Its highly probable, that Slytherin chose his quarters and the quarters of his students closer to his workplace. He wouldn't have wanted to walk through the entire castle for some late night brewing.
In the flims each of the houses crests looks like a family crest, maybe each founder chose that animal from their respective family crests because they were proud of their heritage, but this fits into the theory that they chose a house mascot based of their names.
I always had the theory that each animal was the Patronus of their respective founders. It'd make sense because you don't get to choose your Patronus and each animal does kind of add up with each founder.
"It is usual, but not inevitable, for a Patronus to take the form of an animal commonly found in the caster’s native country." Slytherin's snake mascot could be a slow-worm. It looks like a snake, is actually silver in colour, lives in abundance in the UK, and fits with the worm idea you mentioned in the video. I just thought that was kinda funny, so there you go i guess :))
I came so early that no one I could see mentioned HOW AMAZING THE FOUNDERS SKETCH/STORY BIT WAS!!! I so want to read or listen to their founders origins!!!!
I’d thoughts on the theory that states that each founder of Hogwarts made their own secret room. Slytherin - Chamber of Secrets (duh), Gryffindor - Headmasters office, Hufflepuff - Room of Requirement, Ravenclaw - Unknown/lost though is likely only accessible when the stairs form a certain pattern
I tend to believe that Godric was always running about with a giant lion following closely behind and he's like "oh you can pet him if you are daring and brave enough to risk your arm and life, like any true Gryffindor would" And everyone else be like: "😳 I think we gonna look at the cute badger of Helga but thanks"

In a world where Muggles are terrified of witches and wizards and often would try and attack them, it might be nice to have a contingency plan if they managed to get the location of Hogwarts from a muggleborn student and then attacked. And what better contingency plan is there than a giant murder snake only Slytherin and his descendants can control?
Yeah, it could have been a defense against someone who is attacking the castle, not specifically muggle borns. Protection from someone like Grindelwald or Voldemort himself.
@@maheshmestry5371 Fair point, but it is Dark magic and I doubt the other Founders would've approved. Or maybe that's how Slytherin thought, didn't want to tell them. Can't say for sure. But the basis of this whole theory is that he wasn't a blood purist, that was just a warped view people like Voldy and the Blacks and them had of his ideas.
Also basilisk works way better as a defence mechanism than a weapon for attack on specific group of people (Muggle borns) mixed with others (pure-blooded) - that would be very ineffective or dangerous, too many of "his" people would die. While being the last defence, basilisk would be a weapon of mass killing: you put all your warriors inside the castle and make the basilisk go in front of the castle walls. Enemies are dead or petrified. Easy. Or it could be used on enemies climbing over the walls. Or, if the enemy is inside the castle already, you can use basilisk even more effectively - in the corridors (enemies need to look around very well in order to not fall into some trap, so they would look into basilisk's eyes for sure). Basilisk as muggleborns killer doesn't make any sense to me. Extremely ineffective, dumb and dangerous for other people. You would be able to kill much more people just by using hair pins (you can actually kill with them, it's not a joke). Or with a nice dagger. Or a sword. Or by a poison. Or by using magic! We're talking about magical school, don't tell me Salazar wouldn't be able to come up with a better idea than basilisk, he was very intelligent.
"Lions don't live in England..." Actually, there is a species of lion that was native to the British Isles during the ice age, and lions were not entirely hunted to extinction in Europe until after the founding of Hogwarts. Many Scottish clans feature lions on their heraldry, including McNamara and McLamont (I'm descended from both)
the lion iconography in European royal banners and house crests comes from the Roman era where lions imported from northern Africa were used in gladiator arenas. Because lions were so powerful creatures they became a symbol for bravery and strength and then later a sign of royalty when pretty much every royal house in medieval Europe put them on their coat of arms (even though these lions look misshapen af) nobody in Europe knew about the original ice age lions before the fossils started to get discovered ...
Honey Badgers also stand up to literal Lions and Eagles which essentially makes Hufflepuff the most badass house, standing up to all 3 of the others without fear #HufflepuffPride
He didn't hate them though, he mistrusted them because of the hate towards magic in their time. Because of the prejudice they dealt with at the time it is understandable at the time, but it should have been gone by the time of the series, since it took place in the 90s.
@@Deerhunterjs "Slytherin’s discrimination on the basis of parentage was considered an unusual and misguided view by the majority of wizards at the time. Contemporary literature suggests that Muggle-borns were not only accepted, but often considered to be particularly gifted. I think if i could pick magical animals i would probably say Gryffindor: Gryffin (like come on obviously) but also because they're also a symbol of bravery and courage Slytherin: Basilisk (again pretty obvious) Ravenclaw: Centaurs (because they are one of the most wise magical creatures which fits the ideals of Ravenclaw house) Hufflepuff: Pegasus (as they are fiercely loyal and friendly creatures)

I read something several years ago saying that Hufflepuff’s mascot was supposed to be a bear but Helga decided to make a students pet badger the mascot instead.
Officially my new favorite Pre-Intro Intro. 😂 This is my headcanon now. My favorite theory is the four elements, and I actually think Gryffindor works with this. The tower being "in the sky" puts it closer to the sun (arguably the primary fire in nature), and the same way the fluid movement of snakes resembles water, the warm tones of the lion's coat and the motion of the male lion's mane can evoke/be reminiscent of fire. Also, LOVE that y'all are working with BetterHelp as a sponsor. 👏💯❤
Snakes are actually pretty appropriate for Ireland were it is said that is was full of snakes at one point, Lions are a national animal of England and badgers live in Wales as well
I like to think that they all decided to just pick their favorite nom-magical animal, partly as a symbol for the inclusively of Hogwarts (Here Slytherin went along, because he was not losing his 3 best friends over this issues, just yet) and partly because they all were big animal lovers
It's also possible that magical, or fantastic, creatures were simply too frightening for wizards and witches at the time. I'd imagine that magical parents would tell stories about the wicked Basilisk or Manticore to teach their children not to go out at nighttime akin to the boogeyman, or La Lhorana from Mexico.

I was thinking dragon... but I also wasn't thinking about the Three Blind Pigs story at all for some reason (until I read your comment and realized that's what he was going for).
@@erikliubakka6514 actually, it was the mice that were blind. The pigs were just little and build houses.
I don’t know why I did that.

Snakes do represent those things.
And for a long time.
One of the most known myths is the one with snake convinving a woman to eat an apple to achieve his goal. Conned her right on the spot.
"hey salazar, what would happen if you put chicken eggs under a toad"
I could totally picture salazar and godric making that bet, and then make rowena create the chamber of secrets.👏👏👏
Also please, create a founder series with Ben playing everyone.🙏🙂
I think they choose non-magical animals so that it would be easier to disguise Hogwarts as a normal school when muggles see a Hogwarts uniform or merch owned by children.
Yeah it's a lot more normal see a whole bunch of children walk around with little flags with lions on them instead of like a griffin or a werewolf
I get where ur coming from but the castle is a ruin to muggles and anything related to the school shouldn't be seen by muggles as well
I don’t think so we have tons of mythical creatures on stuff in the real word. The welsh flag literally has a dragon on it 🏴
That is a fantastic theory! I guarantee that J.K. TERFling didn't ever put that much thought into it, though.
Another idea is since a lot of the people who came to the school would be muggleborns who haven't experienced the community (doesn't really hold up with Slytherin but again he was able to talk to snakes so he's an outlier no matter what) it could have been to make the transition between the two worlds easier with animals they are familiar with
When he said "What Huffs and Puffs?" I said to myself "DRAGON!"
And then he said "Wolf" and I legit thought he was joking...
Nope, he leaned into it and chose Werewolf...
Which I mean...yes...make sense. But Dragon would have been AWESOME!
I was the exact same.
Until I realized he was basing his answer off of The Three Blind Pigs... and then I understood how his answer made sense.
Edit: but I still wanted him to say dragon

@@christianali5431 well I guess that’s true but the eagle was chosen because it rises above others
It can’t be a coincidence that both Potions masters we know were Slytherins and the bowl of Hygieia (a snake twined around a cup) is a symbol of pharmacy - muggle potion making.
It seems as if potion-making is a Slytherin specialty; perhaps the House's traditional forte
I also like the thought of Slytherin being a pharmacist/healer. (They didn't really differentiate the professions at that time.)
The snake would fit really well in there.
The acting in this video is the best part. I love how Godric just always carries his sword.
In the flims each of the houses crests looks like a family crest, maybe each founder chose that animal from their respective family crests because they were proud of their heritage, but this fits into the theory that they chose a house mascot based of their names.
"Ravenclaw didn't understand the assignment." Did you even hear yourself when you said this Ben?!
Right! I'm so offended! A Ravenclaw always understands the assignment!
lol Ravenclaws are so easily offended.
She wasn't wearing her diadem.
I always had the theory that each animal was the Patronus of their respective founders. It'd make sense because you don't get to choose your Patronus and each animal does kind of add up with each founder.
Great theory!!!
I really like that theory, it makes so much sense lol
"It is usual, but not inevitable, for a Patronus to take the form of an animal commonly found in the caster’s native country."
"Most uncommon of all possible Patronuses are magical creatures such as dragons, Thestrals and phoenixes."

Slytherin's snake mascot could be a slow-worm. It looks like a snake, is actually silver in colour, lives in abundance in the UK, and fits with the worm idea you mentioned in the video.
I just thought that was kinda funny, so there you go i guess :))
Noice
When you said “snakes barely live in England, there’s like 3 of them total!” I actually thought you meant 3 individual snakes 😂
Fun fact, in 2019 (I think) they discovered a new breed of snake and named in Salazar Slytherin. Like that's the name of the snake.

Raven is old English for black. Golden eagles, who were the most popular heraldic animal after lions, have black claws.
If the founders series does happen I want Ben to play all of the Founders
I’d thoughts on the theory that states that each founder of Hogwarts made their own secret room. Slytherin - Chamber of Secrets (duh), Gryffindor - Headmasters office, Hufflepuff - Room of Requirement, Ravenclaw - Unknown/lost though is likely only accessible when the stairs form a certain pattern
I tend to believe that Godric was always running about with a giant lion following closely behind and he's like "oh you can pet him if you are daring and brave enough to risk your arm and life, like any true Gryffindor would"
And everyone else be like: "😳 I think we gonna look at the cute badger of Helga but thanks"
I. LOVE. IT
"and if anyone asked say we all got into a big fight and I won" 😂

6:48 this would make even more sense in Harry Potter because in British English "badges" and "badgers" are almost IDENTICAL in pronunciation
Ben is now my favorite chaotic storyteller ever!!!! He takes half the friggin video describing how the founders choose their mascots
I am convinced the basilisk was a defense mechanism put there by Slytherin and his descendants just got the wrong idea about it lol
Defense against what, exactly?
@@diyavatsavai5778 Muggles!
I loved the basilisk skit part. It was so funny.😀😀😂😂 you guys should definitely produce and also act in a founder series.
"Lions don't live in England..." Actually, there is a species of lion that was native to the British Isles during the ice age, and lions were not entirely hunted to extinction in Europe until after the founding of Hogwarts. Many Scottish clans feature lions on their heraldry, including McNamara and McLamont (I'm descended from both)
That is very interesting. Thanks for that extra bit of information.
Wow.
the lion iconography in European royal banners and house crests comes from the Roman era where lions imported from northern Africa were used in gladiator arenas.
Clan Buchanan, too!!
Honey Badgers also stand up to literal Lions and Eagles which essentially makes Hufflepuff the most badass house, standing up to all 3 of the others without fear
#HufflepuffPride

I hope for more on this subject! Also hope for more on Newt and magical beasts, Its been awhile!
Maybe Salazar Slytherin didn't hate muggle borns as much as we thought...
Okay that can't be true
He didn't hate them though, he mistrusted them because of the hate towards magic in their time. Because of the prejudice they dealt with at the time it is understandable at the time, but it should have been gone by the time of the series, since it took place in the 90s.
@@Deerhunterjs "Slytherin’s discrimination on the basis of parentage was considered an unusual and misguided view by the majority of wizards at the time. Contemporary literature suggests that Muggle-borns were not only accepted, but often considered to be particularly gifted. They went by the affectionate name of ‘Magbobs’ (there has been much debate about the origin of the term, but it seems most likely to be that in such a case, magic ‘bobbed up’ out of nowhere)."

„Snakes are Snakes“ - Ben Carlin
Man! You learn something new every day!
The vrs snake theory is funny because it implies that salazar chose a mascot and then all the other founders just decided to meme on him.
The biggest thing I took away from this video is that "snakes are snakes."
and that they’re fluid
Like whose mane ones said : fame is a fame, Harry.
And “lions, like all other creatures, cannot exist in fire”
"Snakes are snakes." That's all I took from this
Ben's comedy acting as the different founders is so much fun!
When you said Door I literally died.
Snakes are actually pretty appropriate for Ireland were it is said that is was full of snakes at one point, Lions are a national animal of England and badgers live in Wales as well
11:54 Ben coming in with these hot takes that snakes are snakes
This is my FAVORITE episode, EVER!! Just because Ben seems to riff on and on without worry about Anything! Even half the audience!!
I like to think that they all decided to just pick their favorite nom-magical animal, partly as a symbol for the inclusively of Hogwarts (Here Slytherin went along, because he was not losing his 3 best friends over this issues, just yet) and partly because they all were big animal lovers
I just assumed that these were all the favorite animals of each founder
It's also possible that magical, or fantastic, creatures were simply too frightening for wizards and witches at the time. I'd imagine that magical parents would tell stories about the wicked Basilisk or Manticore to teach their children not to go out at nighttime akin to the boogeyman, or La Lhorana from Mexico.
Who else really likes the head canon that the Pensieve siblings ( from the Chronicles of Narnia) are the Hogwarts House founders?

@@ninjabluefyre3815 Maybe the Pevensie siblings encountered cursed artifacts that caused them to lose all memories of their shared childhood and previous adventures? My favorite JRPG of all time has a side story like that.

There's one thing we're missing here: did the Founders actually choose these animals? Or were they already chosen by their families?
Salazar, Rowena, Godric, and Helga all come from families whose crests are these animals. Though they are Founders, they all have families, too. Theh adopted and used their family's animals to create the Houses.
This video most definitely passes the vibe check I haven't laughed this much in awhile
