I had always assumed that the Lake was Loch Ness, the Giant Squid Nessie, and Hogwarts was Castle Urquhart. I am now not so sure. I also love that Ben butchered how to pronounce 'Hebridean', but was worried about Bethir.
so there's this idea that Hogwarts is actually built like a maze for the purpose of warding off invaders because when the school was built, the magical community is very fragmented and is constantly at war with the muggles. The staircases change all the time to confuse invaders, the Gryffindor common room entrance is a hole you have to crawl through to slow down and make enemies vulnerable to attacks, Hufflepuff common room door attack you if don't have the correct password, etc. On top of that, the castle sits with its back to the lake and surrounded by mountains, it's a very easily defensible position against an army, as we have seen in the battle of Hogwarts
Well the changing staircases aren’t book canon, but if you’re going off of movie canon this is great! Plus it still kinda works with the book-canon castle senanigans, like the trick stair you get stuck in, only to be immediately killed by the wizard(s) at the top of the stairs and also all the passwords for doors and secret passages behind tapestries or inside of statues.
Hogwarts is actually never described as being unplottable in the books. In GoF, Hermione speculates that Durmstrang could be unplottable, but the word is never used in association with Hogwarts.
Unplottability could be limited to humans. It explains how house elves can also apparate in, out and within the castle. And it would be in line with that one consistent part in the universe, that witches and wizards usually forget to account for non-human magic, because they don't value it.
Yeah owls make a bit of a plot hole. As SCB once said, if the ministry needed to find Sirius Black / Voldemort, just send them a letter and follow the owl! 🦉
SLYTHERIN is the tail and in the dungeons. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCHOOL. HUFFLEPUFF is near the kitchen so mabey it was the stomach because to get into the kitchens you have to tickle a pear. GRYFFINDOR is the head as explained in the video RAVENCLAW is the second highest tower so mabey it could have been a nearby bird or a wing of the dragon
Hufflepuff might be near the kitchen, and one of those might be the stomach, but I’d think the kitchen was the stomach while the Hufflepuff common room was the lungs (because of the “huffling” and the “puffing”).
I believe GRYFFINDOR would need to be the heart and RAVENCLAW the head, (due to knowledge) but then that would kinda cloud Ben and J’s whole thing?…. Great theories all around tho!
Considering how meticulous JK was in her research into different kinds of folklore, It wouldn't surprise me at all that the drawing of the dragon in the Fantastic Beasts book, was indeed inspired by the mountain.
I’ve been into Harry Potter since 2001 and I’m active in fandom and have been for over 2 decades. The fact that you guys can keep spiting original theories and headcanons is amazing and I look forward to it every time! Thank you!
This is going to drive me insane. I could swear Hogwarts motto was mentioned in one of the books, yet I've spent a good time scouring them in the chapters I thought it could be and it's nowhere to be found.
I personally love the idea that rowena ravenclaw said this to helga hufflepuff because you'd chip a nail getting dragon scales and it just stuck. It's also hiliarious thinking if hogwarts wasa sleeping transfigured dragon hufflepuff's common room in near the dragons under tail.
The main staircase seems to be pretty much in the middle of the school, which would be like the stomach of the dragon. If I had a bunch of kids doing bat bogey hexes and stunning spells in my belly I'd probably get indigestion, too, so the moving stairs makes sense.
Very similar to a DnD quote from our games many years ago: "Don't hug the dragon." When, at the end of a massive dungeon, in a frozen cave, and a little girl asks your True Names.... a halflling in the group decides to hug her...... promptly got backhanded 300ft in a 50ft room.... splat. (No, not me, but the player did rage quit and threw her dice in the dumpster...)
I feel like either there's a big piece missing, or that DM was just being mean. I mean, hugging a small child (even if they're actually a dragon) shouldn't result in instant death unless there's a ton of warnings and things saying not to hug them.
@@KuraiLunae Many DMs are mean due to belief that it's DM vs players, instead of all of them working together to create amazing stories. Of course not saying that it was the case, but it wouldn't be at all surprising.
@@NaoyaYami I've had the good fortune of being in collaborative games since my first, but it's still horrible manners, if nothing else, to take world-bending power and use it to kill a character off without any warning.

But was busy making a new character while the rest made it into the cave. Missed most of the NPCs conversation other than there definitely being signs that she was not normal, so hugging her was not smart. Very not smart. DM didn't go out of his way to spoil the party, at least compared to other DMs I've had the mispleasure of knowing.
When I saw the title for this video I was sitting at my desk, and I looked over and saw my Hogwarts crest night light sitting there all lit up. I will never be able to look at it the same again after this theory 😂 Love you guys! Thanks for the great content!
This would be a great idea to include in a Founders series! One can only wish for new wizarding world content but WB decided for a remake of the series 🙄 Still gonna watch it tho 😂
What if Ben is slowly absorbing J's essence to feed his own power and that's why his Hey Brother is getting longer while J's is getting shorter? I'm onto you, Ben 👀
I think "Don't tickle a sleeping dragon" means "Don't mess with Hogwarts" because there is strong power here. It's a message from the school to those who seek to go against it. Voldemort tickles the sleeping dragon, he pitches himself against the magical power of love held at Hogwarts (Dumbledore, Harry) to his detriment.
after Voldermort was defeated *at* Hogwarts, you can bet people will take that motto seriously from then on. Any future villains in the Wizarding World would probably know better than attacking the school itself 😅
If Harry grew up in the wizarding world, I think he'd have already lived with the Weasleys because: -Sirius was in Azkaban, -Snape would NOT have wanted to raise the child who was more or less responsible for killing the love of his life, -Dumbledore and the rest of the Order that was left wouldn't have taken him in willingly, -Neville's parents were tortured and ended up in St. Mungo's, and -the Weasleys already had a load of kids at that point so what's one more? lol
@@DaShirtBoy1 pretty sure Dumbledore’s Order had members who the books literally quoted as being extremely happy to accept Harry as their own and MOLLY come on, she’d accept Harry on principle. She’d be happy too since besides the morals of it because Harry avenged her twin brothers.
I’d just like to let you know that I’ve been listening to you on Spotify and it’s amazing how you manage to still have things to talk about that we may not know! It’s so fun!
Dear Ben: I really enjoyed your delivery of this theory. Have to share something with you at the 2:27 I paused this video looked at my wife and said ben is about to tell me that Hogwsrts used to be a dragon. I only share this beacuse I have been watching you guys for years now and I love guessing your theories about HP. and to be that on the mark just made me happy
7:51 WHAT IF the castle used to be a dragon... Me: Yeah righto, this will be fun, but yeah nah no it's just a magic castle. Also me, at end of video: How did you just convince me that this is undisputed canon 😅
I’ve known about the motto for years. I took Latin in high school (I was REALLY bad) and every year we’d go to this quiz night with a whole bunch of other schools, and the first thing we did before the quiz officially began was translate our school motto from Latin into English; and they’d always introduce it by saying ‘Hogwarts’ motto is… what’s your school’s?’ (Our school was alway the only one whose motto was actually in English. Made ‘translating’ it awkward.)
So, I have a question. The castle is protected by enchantments so Muggles can't see it, Grimauld Place is hidden in a row of townhouses so muggles don't see it and Diagon Alley is hidden from Muggles. Question: Can a muggle enter a Magical Village like Hogsmeade or Godric's Hollow? Can a muggle enter the Dark Forest? If so what would they see?
I would imagine it's very much like Grimmauld Place: it just would not exist and a Muggle would appear from one extreme side (the entrance of the Repello Muggletum field) to the other (its exit), without knowing or even believing anything is there whatsoever. That's why the house at Grimmauld Place seems to appear from out of nowhere: because to the Muggles, it IS nowhere because it doesn't exist. It'd be like a field of Obliviate for just that area, for just Muggles.
@@hallbjornthefirebreather8376 Both Hufflepuff are Slytherin underground and if the dragon is laying chest they would be in the stomach area and I think Hufflepuff being near the kitchen makes them fit as the stomach and Slytherin's only real good part left is the heart
"Never tickle a sleeping dragon" 🤣 fits perfectly to Griffindor, because all of them are ALWAYS inviting dangers into their lives 😅 ("the land of the brave is a true Griffindor's place"). This is my head canon: that since bravery is one of the most specific trait of a Griffindor, Godric knew they would need his sword to save them from trouble(s) so he hid the sword in his hat because he knew it would become handy one day (or constantly) to all the Griffindors 😂
As soon as I heard the translation for Caput Draconis, I knew what was coming. I never thought about this and it just blew my mind. Honestly, with the amount of research it takes you guys to do this, I sometimes wonder if JK did all this research and laid everything down waiting for someone to figure everything out, or if all these connections were never planned.
If gryffindor tower is the head, then maybe Ravenclaw tower (being the tallest tower in the school) was the tail, slytherin and hufflepuff go underwater and underground respectively so could be the feet, and so maybe 5he great Hall is the body, being more central and larger than the other rooms.
Wait, so the motto is "Never tickle a sleeping dragon" and Draco means dragon...so the motto is actually "Never tickle a sleeping Draco". You're welcome, Draco/Harry shippers.
Love this theory. I think this warrants a series delving into the sections of the castle and possible transfiguration comparisons. I want to hear more.
Maybe the dragon that was in the dark arts room was the dragon that the founders found in the place they built the castle...it's about 30 feet...and Godrick griffindoor tried to tickle the dragon😂
I'm pretty sure I've heard somewhere that the founders found a dragon somwhere and Godric was like "I'm gonna go tickle it" but then Salazar was like " no don't do it" or something like that.
Hufflepuff: near kitchen, belly? Ravenclaw: smart whippy people, whip of the TAIL perhaps?!?! Slytherin: …cunning people who want power without risk. Wings maybe? Although they are in a dungeon under water… so the bladder…
fascinating! I wonder if that means Gryffindor got the Head, Ravenclaw got the Wings, Hufflepuff got the Stomach, and Slytherin got the... "Plumbing"? gross. maybe we can say he got the claws or smthn.
I see you’ve changed the podcast description from a ‘chapter by chapter read through’ to a ‘chapter by chapter discussion’. That definitely sets expectations better.
8:35 I don't know if Hogwarts Legacy is canon or not but theres is a dragon statue around the bottom of the castle with that fraze on it. (Edit) The statue was of a Hungarian Black.
8:37 the motto may be derived from a phrase used to describe the experiments on the Demon Core, which was that they were "tickling the sleeping dragon's tail"
Me imagining Howarts calling The Casa Madrigal on the weekends just to chat, because there have kinship in knowing what it’s like to have magical people living inside you.
veery interesting! So Gryffindor is the head Hufflepuff has to be the body (heart and stomach) Slytherin is a snake, so the tail. Ravenclaw, is either the litteral claws, or the wings. Maybe even both. Air symbolizes wisdom and knowledge.
Bro, you do realize how many species of dragons are mentioned in the series and we only get to see a few of them. That's so lame. I feel like we were owed more dragons in the prequel series
Yup. Fantastic Beasts would have been so much better as a magical version of a NatGeo/Animal Planet show... just have Newt wandering the world looking at magical creatures. Maaaaybe some light plot lines here and there.
Roenaw: "guys I just had a crazy dream about a pig, who's up for building a castle?" Me: "I just had a crazy dream about a toilet, who's up for pizza?"
Oh wow! I just finished up a 2 month roadtrip. The first popcorn culture podcast I heard was talking about Ben's tattoo. And now I'm seeing it for the first time! It looks so cool! Glad you were able to get something you wanted Ben!

I am now not so sure.
I also love that Ben butchered how to pronounce 'Hebridean', but was worried about Bethir.
How are they supposed to be pronounced?
@@rebekah4761 The stress in 'Hebridean' is on the two 'e's 'Heb' like 'head', 'ri' is unstressed (sort of a 'ruh' sound), 'dean' like the name 'Ian'
@@rebekah4761To be fair though, the way Ben pronounced Hebridean is consistet with the British vs American pronunciation of Carribean
How do you pronounce “Bethir” then?
so there's this idea that Hogwarts is actually built like a maze for the purpose of warding off invaders because when the school was built, the magical community is very fragmented and is constantly at war with the muggles.
Actually, they do change, but only when nobody is there to see it, such as staircases leading elsewhere on certain days of the week.
@@EntwinedKarma72 that’s not the grand stair case, those are individual staircases. I didn’t realize that was what you were talking about

"And, because what we do is over-analyze every detail of the story" is the most relatable statement ever 🤣
“I just had a crazy dream about a pig, who’s up for building a castle?”. 🤣🤣🤣
For being unplotable, it’s amazing how easy any owl ever can seemingly find it.
cause owls are maaaagiic
Hogwarts is actually never described as being unplottable in the books. In GoF, Hermione speculates that Durmstrang could be unplottable, but the word is never used in association with Hogwarts.
True. They should definitely do a theory on that
Unplottability could be limited to humans.
I hope in the future they dive more into the other schools that’s in Africa, Brazil and Asia
Same
Same! The cloaks from the Japanese school sound super cool with how they grow and change colors
Same I would love a series that shows the other schools, their classes and everything they offer it would be so dope
SLYTHERIN is the tail and in the dungeons. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCHOOL.
HUFFLEPUFF is near the kitchen so mabey it was the stomach because to get into the kitchens you have to tickle a pear.
GRYFFINDOR is the head as explained in the video
RAVENCLAW is the second highest tower so mabey it could have been a nearby bird or a wing of the dragon
Edit was just spelling mistakes
Surely RavenCLAW tower would be the claws of the dragon? Maybe it had a limb raised to strike when it was transfigured.
@@adamrobinson6951 omg. Yes. Love it
Hufflepuff might be near the kitchen, and one of those might be the stomach, but I’d think the kitchen was the stomach while the Hufflepuff common room was the lungs (because of the “huffling” and the “puffing”).
This has always interested me. I’m so glad that SCB is covering it. Love your vids! ❤
So we could have a future story where the Dragon wakes up
Very similar to a DnD quote from our games many years ago: "Don't hug the dragon."
When, at the end of a massive dungeon, in a frozen cave, and a little girl asks your True Names.... a halflling in the group decides to hug her...... promptly got backhanded 300ft in a 50ft room....
Should've rolled an insight check
@@KuraiLunae Many DMs are mean due to belief that it's DM vs players, instead of all of them working together to create amazing stories.
Of course not saying that it was the case, but it wouldn't be at all surprising.
@@NaoyaYami I've had the good fortune of being in collaborative games since my first, but it's still horrible manners, if nothing else, to take world-bending power and use it to kill a character off without any warning.
@@KuraiLunae generally a very good DM, far better than the other DM that used to be my friend, long story of TMI.
This was a very long dungeon, my character died after a series of pit traps he almost survived, but Nat1ing a crossbow while falling didn't work. I was still having fun.
I will never be able to look at it the same again after this theory 😂

Yeah, Griffimdor took on the head, Slytherin on the tale, Ravenclaw on the heart, and Hufflepuff on the stomach.😂

They kinda did that in the If Neville was the chosen one series
yeah where he was raised by sirius, it's my fav version of harry to date :)@@sheerdumbluck
If Harry grew up in the wizarding world, I think he'd have already lived with the Weasleys because:
-Sirius was in Azkaban,
-Snape would NOT have wanted to raise the child who was more or less responsible for killing the love of his life,
-Dumbledore and the rest of the Order that was left wouldn't have taken him in willingly,
-Neville's parents were tortured and ended up in St. Mungo's, and
-the Weasleys already had a load of kids at that point so what's one more? lol

Wait, if the common rooms are the parts of a dragon, the slytherin dorm in the dungeon would be the colon, right?🤣
which would actually explain why the huge pipes and massive pipe system below the school were large enough to house a fully grown basilisk 😆
@@sleepynightowl1550 That would make the pipes, veins, since they go throughout the castle
that's also a possibility. I was thinking more along the lines of small and large intestines though, but who knows@@atleastdecent3810
Or the buttocks
7:51 WHAT IF the castle used to be a dragon...
Me: Yeah righto, this will be fun, but yeah nah no it's just a magic castle.
Also me, at end of video:
How did you just convince me that this is undisputed canon 😅
I’ve known about the motto for years. I took Latin in high school (I was REALLY bad) and every year we’d go to this quiz night with a whole bunch of other schools, and the first thing we did before the quiz officially began was translate our school motto from Latin into English; and they’d always introduce it by saying ‘Hogwarts’ motto is… what’s your school’s?’
(Our school was alway the only one whose motto was actually in English.
It'd be like a field of Obliviate for just that area, for just Muggles.
acutely, Hogsmeade is the only village in the UK that isn't part muggle. so yes, they can
I mean, never underestimate an urbex photographer 😂
Godric's Hollow has muggles.....
Different magic though, for example, 12 Grimmauld place is under the Fidelius charm.
I'm starting to really question the logic of having the entrance to the kitchens involve tickling now.
Slytherin's common room is the heart, Hufflepuff's is the stomach, and Ravenclaw's is one of the wings!
I would say Hufflepuffs is the heart and Slytherin is the tail. But I like Ravenclaw being the wings
@@hallbjornthefirebreather8376 Both Hufflepuff are Slytherin underground and if the dragon is laying chest they would be in the stomach area and I think Hufflepuff being near the kitchen makes them fit as the stomach and Slytherin's only real good part left is the heart
@@MercuryIsDumb I accept that
"Never tickle a sleeping dragon" 🤣 fits perfectly to Griffindor, because all of them are ALWAYS inviting dangers into their lives 😅 ("the land of the brave is a true Griffindor's place").
I read somewhere that Salazar and Godric were walking and saw a sleeping dragon.
Godric decided to Tickle it 😂😂😂
Wait, so the motto is "Never tickle a sleeping dragon" and Draco means dragon...so the motto is actually "Never tickle a sleeping Draco".
You're welcome, Draco/Harry shippers.
Draco just means dragon in Latin.
@@lordedmundblackadder9321
Yes, very good. You appear to have almost gotten the joke.
Love this theory. I think this warrants a series delving into the sections of the castle and possible transfiguration comparisons. I want to hear more.
Maybe the dragon that was in the dark arts room was the dragon that the founders found in the place they built the castle...it's about 30 feet...and Godrick griffindoor tried to tickle the dragon😂
the idea behind this video reminds me a lot of the theory they did about the knight bus... i love that their theories can sometimes back each other up
Not to mention, JK lived in Scotland, started and finished the series there, and we already know many elements were influenced by this.
Dragons protect their treasure. The students are its treasure!!
I loved hearing the first idea spark into your heads in the pod. I knew you would find out how it works and it would be great!
Theory idea:
Where do kids go before Hogwarts?
Do they have a magical school for little kids?
If there's a dragon involved, I'd say it's more likely to be the mountain Hogwarts is built on, rather than the castle itself.
That would make more sense, though whether or not its a dragon's corpse or sleeping one its hard to say.
YAY!! Thank you sooo much for posting this video!🎉
I'm pretty sure I've heard somewhere that the founders found a dragon somwhere and Godric was like "I'm gonna go tickle it" but then Salazar was like " no don't do it" or something like that.
slytherin common room being symbolically in the “belly of the beast” is very cool to me in this context
"Plumbing"? gross. maybe we can say he got the claws or smthn.
reading over the comments now, I've seen a few others suggest the Tail for Salazar, which I like as well!
Considering slytherin is in the dungeon, makes the tail slytherin area , which kinda looks like a snake. Like a dragons tail
This might be my favorite theory in a while
I always used to wonder what it means. I came across the motto in a trivia quiz. Also there is a sleeping dragon statue in Hogwarts legacy.
This is the most creative and amazing theory of all your theories. I ABSOLUTELY love this idea.
I see you’ve changed the podcast description from a ‘chapter by chapter read through’ to a ‘chapter by chapter discussion’. That definitely sets expectations better.
You got your letter when you read the first book. You went to Hogwarts with the characters.
Doesn't it mean never tickle a sleeping dragon? I'm not exactly sure and this is before I watched it
8:35 I don't know if Hogwarts Legacy is canon or not but theres is a dragon statue around the bottom of the castle with that fraze on it. (Edit) The statue was of a Hungarian Black.
Does that then make the secret passageways the bum hole? 19:05
8:37 the motto may be derived from a phrase used to describe the experiments on the Demon Core, which was that they were "tickling the sleeping dragon's tail"
Love their videos
Speaking of suits of armor, one of my favorite little details in Hogwarts Legacy is the pettiness of the suits of armor toward each other. Love it.
13:55 Surprised that you didn't highlight the venomous sting that accompanies the dragon in the tale as being the basilisk
Me imagining Howarts calling The Casa Madrigal on the weekends just to chat, because there have kinship in knowing what it’s like to have magical people living inside you.
It was crazy to see the start of this theory on Through The Griffin Door
Thought Ben was saying he was 23 at first and felt old, I always thought they were both older than me, until I realized he was saying he was 34 💀
veery interesting!
So Gryffindor is the head
Hufflepuff has to be the body (heart and stomach)
Slytherin is a snake, so the tail.
Ravenclaw, is either the litteral claws, or the wings. Maybe even both. Air symbolizes wisdom and knowledge.
So fun to go back and listen to this after the new through the griffin door episode today! Love the episode and the theory!
Gryffindor tried to tickle a sleeping dragon and Hufflepuff yelled at him to stop it, leading Ravenclaw to translate it into the school motto
Your crazy amount of research is the thing of legends!!!
It could also be that they chose the area because the locals feared the legend of such a fierce dragon, and figured no one would ever go there.
40? How dare you? I'm 51 and still waiting! 😂
I did not know what to expect when clicking on this theory, but let me tell you: this is now my headcanon. I'll believe it; it's not that far fetched.
What-if proposal: what if Draco did go to Durmstrang instead of Hogwarts?
