I can only imagine Lupin realizing that Harry has the Map, then biting his knuckles trying not to laugh when it starts insulting Snape and he FINALLY gets to see this ~20 year old prank come to fruition.
I never realized until reading this that they would have specifically added that for snape when they created the map vs using an enchantment that just insults whomever is trying to use it that shouldn't be like i thought is was.
@@sonorangaming449 I always thought it was enchanted to insult anyone who reads it, but I came upon a wiki entry about the "Charm to insult Severus Snape" one day.
Fred and George are such a delight in the books, they are goofing off but still manage to do so much good. I really like in the second book when Harry is suspected being the heir of slytherin, they act like his heralds "making way for the heir of slytherin" And it makes Harry feel better since the rest of the students know the Twins are always goofing, it kinda removes suspicion on Harry. And the books are just full of moments like that.
Reading Order of the Pheonix for the first time and I just got past the bit where Fred, George, and Ginny are all chanting "he got off!" After Harry's trial, it really shows how much they value Harry's brotherhood
This part made me choke on a bagel I was eating at the time. I came this close to blasting off this planet and I wouldn’t have cared in the slightest cause I went happy.
@@a.ychristian3562They really did include him into the family the second they met him. Fred and George like all other Weasleys saw him like real Family and loved him. Harry marrying into their family so they are now actually Family in title as well is just the best thing that could happen, same goes for Hermione being in as well.
Fred and George are the type of jokers who really want everyone to relax and have a good time. They usually want their "victims" to laugh along. Do they sometimes go too far? Yes, but it normally with good intentions. In their mind, someone like Percy could use a good laugh to relax. It's only malicious when their target is particularly vile, like Umbridge.
Yeah, that's so true for Percy. He was a real stick in the mud for a lot of the series. He was always a bit too uptight for me. Edit: Can we just talk about how cute J's twins in their Mario Bros Halloween outfits.
George usually keeps Fred in check I say this cause as revenge wjen ron was lile 3 Fred turned something of Ron's into spider and sometimes Fred is really mean to Ron it's def malice aimed at Ron from Fred all cause Ron broke Fred broom
I’m reading HP to my kids (4 and 7) and their favourite part so far was the Map’s insults to Snape. They absolutely LOST IT as soon as I said “abnormally large nose,” continued to laugh themselves silly through the rest of them, and made me reread them again and again. Gotta love those Marauders!
When anyone brings up the "only Marauders can see other Marauders" theory about the map, they seem to forget that Snape only shows up because he sees Lupin on the map going into the passage.
Well Lupin left the map on his desk open, just like in the case of Moody being able to use the map even though he'd be an unsavory character who doesn't know how to operate it, I feel the contents of the map are based on who opened the map, not who'd currently using it. Thus because Lupin opened the map it's able to see the other marauders, perhaps it's even an additional passphrase which enabled the viewing of the other marauders, which lupin invoked because it would allow him to see Sirius.
I like to think the map was designed with a little of the marauders inside, and reacts to everyone differently. So when it detects Snape in Prisoner of Azkaban it insults him (because the Marauders hated Snape). But when it detected Fred and George, it told them how to solve it because it detected their mischievousness. I also like to think that Lily once found the Marauders map, and it started flirting with her.
Because a lot of people bring up Harry seeing Pettigrew on the map as a counter to only the Marauders being able to see the Marauders, while this is the case in the movies, this scene plays out very differently in the books. In the books it's revealed that Lupin, Sirius, James and Remus are the Marauders, and that Lupin found them in the shack by seeing Pettigrew on the map, going further on to explain that he knows how the map works because he helped create it. In the movies it's never actually revealed who the Marauders are, the movie creates a different way to give Lupin the revelation that Pettigrew is alive, by having Harry tell him. Thus in the movies they combined two scenes, the scene where Harry gets caught with the map, and the scene where Lupin finds out about Pettigrew, into the same scene. In the books Harry is caught with the map after an incident in Hogsmeade, the scene where Harry is messing with Malfoy while using the cloak, in the books the cloak is pulled partway off him revealing his floating head, which Malfoy immediately goes to report. Harry rushes to get back to the school via the secret passage to cover himself, in a rush he leaves the cloak in the passage and leaves with the map where it's almost immediately found by Snape. Snape tries to force the map open, and when he's presented with the named Mooney Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs, as well as very unique insults the Marauders used to say to him, he knew who was behind the map, and went to Lupin with Harry. In the books Harry never sees Pettigrew on the map.
Imo Harry can see the marauders for the same reason he's protected from voldemort while at privet drive, the blood of his parents, he has the blood of a marauder
@@slayerking360 Harry can not see Peter, but Harry can see Lupin. Snape was able to see Lupin too. Why? The Marauders are visible on the map in HUMAN form, but dont show up for others in ANIMAL form, only to each other. It also makes sense.
Imagine if the Marauders had lived, gotten normal wizarding jobs like... working at the ministry like 90% of the british wizarding population, and made new maps. Maps of Hogsmeade, maps of Diagon Alley, maps of Nockturn Alley... imagine the utility for Aurors. Being able to immediately see criminal wizards entering any of the maps, regardless of disguise, and being able to apparate directly to their position, ready to stupefy. They'd turn crime fighting upside down in days, and rush through the ranks. Imagine if they made bigger maps... entire cities. They clearly had an amazing invention in their hands. It was the equivalent of having someone who you believed was one of your worst enemies learning all of your most embarrassing secrets. I actually really like that idea, and honestly as soon as you started bringing up the personality I was like "I know where this is going" Honestly I could see a whole situation happen around this theory, I can visualize the whole scenario The map: Are you up to no good? Twins: "The parchment talks?" "That explains a lot" "Would you say we're up to no good?" "Most definitely" The map: Solemnly Swear it Twins: "Seems tedious" "It can clearly hear us though" "Worth a shot?" "Filch didn't like it for a reason" Twins (In unison): "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" And viola, the map's secrets were unlocked.
Given that he probably helped create the map, it is likely that he knew what the only ways to reveal the map were. That means that he would not have to ask.
I like to think there is no real pass phrase, the map is just messing with them. Like, the twins found it and started talking to it like Snape did, and the map was like "I have found my people".
Sirius seems like the Slytherin, Black family, and had the cunning, ambition and resourcfulness to survive and escape askaban. Peter is the Hufflepuff but in a strange way. He understands loyalty is important but is confused to who he should be loyal to. Has a huge amount of hard work, dedication and patience keeping himself as a rat for 12 years. And a badger is definitely the most rat like out of all the other creatures on house crests.
Agree What's more, loyalty can be also something of Slytherin - for instance, Bellatrix Sirius- Slytherin James - Gryffidor Lupin - Ravenclaw Peter - Hufflepuff
The “only maurauders can see eachother” theory doesn’t work because A) snape see lupin on it and that’s how he knows where to go. And B) Harry see Peter on it in the movie (although maybe we ignore that one cuz it’s kinda dumb) what’s more likely is that the twins stopped using it by the time Ron got to school because they had in memorized already. And they’d only check it for specific reasons, and wouldn’t check the dorms
Yes! People act like the twins would constantly be keeping tabs on Ron and Ginny, but why? If it was Percy yea but the twins? Like they care if their siblings are sneaking out of the dorms?
Orrrr... The marauders can only see each other when they are in animagus form, others can see them only when they are in human form. Lupin doesn't have an Animagus form so Snape managed to see him, but the twins couldn't see Peter because he was always in animagus form. Harry was able to because Harry is a Marauder's son

I always assumed Fred and George gave the map to Harry because of Sirius. If someone was trying to get to you, what better solution is there than having a map that will show you they are coming
Also if you’re looking for it, you can actually see when Harry sees him and Peter on the map, Harry has two feet which move slowly. Peter has four feet at a time that seem to move quickly which shows that the map can possibly tell people who is in animagus and when they are one
I’m surprised you’ve never mentioned how often ‘at once’ is said in the books. Next time you read them, you should try counting and do a short video or yt short about it. (I think it’s 77 in prince and 66 in hallows)
I think the map is tied to Hogwart's main entrance. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Flitwich trains the front oaken door to recognize Sirius in order to not grant him access into the castle. I think the Marauders could have put a spell on the entrance to "scan" and "register" everyone that enters through it, then link them onto their map. This could be how even people who have never been to Hogwarts before or even live in the UK (such as foreign guests) have their name and location appear up on the map.
Depressing Fact: Freds death affected George so much he was never able to produce a corporeal Patronas ever again. This implies 2 things: 1, a fundemental part of his joy in life was Fred, and 2, now that hes dead, he will never have the same amount of happiness in his life ever again. Holy SHI-

I’m pretty sure that you made a video about how the map uses The Book and Quill to keep an up to date list of who all can appear on the map, but does anyone have any theories on what would happen if an addition was made to the school or if part of the structure was destroyed by a curse and couldn’t be repaired? Would The Map update itself or would The Map be out of date? We know it shows secret passages out of the school that no longer exist for various reasons and if I remember correctly the passage to The Hogshead isn’t on there (but that may be a Room of Requirement thing). Thoughts?
Yeah, you had it right. Fred and George warn Harry that one of the passages shown behind a mirror had caved in, which wouldn't be necessary if the map showed it up-to-date. They also don't say anything like "look here" when they say it caved in, further implying the map didn't "know". So presumably it does not update, with the likely exception of the parts that regularly changed when they were at school, like staircases.

When is J going to rate more Harry Potter covers? The first one was super fun and it was really cool to see what the covers looked like around the world.
5:00 was Filch around when the Marauders were? It's easy to think so since he's a really old squib, so what else would he be doing, but Mrs Weasly is younger than Filch (in the movie, I don't remember if Filch's age was revealed in the books as "greasy" doesn't really convey age) and she directly mentioned having not only a different groundskeeper but one that was a wizard. It would make sense that the office of the groundskeeper would be the same despite the owner, so the map probably got taken by a wizard groundskeeper.
Wasn’t there a different caretaker before filch? I remember Molly saying a different one caught Mr Weasley when they were out of the dorm late when they were in school. Apollyon Pringle (I looked up the name)

Here is a theory for you, why is Snape in Slytherin?? You get sorted based on what you value most, and Snape never really comes across as ambitious. Maybe you could argue that the reason Snape resents James so much is because of all the glory James seemed to get at Hogwarts 🤔 but the story really implies that has dislike of James is due to his feelings for Lilly.
ambition isn't the only thing slytherins value. his self proclaimed nickname was the half blood prince, which admittedly is a double, since his mother's maiden name was prince, iirc, and he was a half blood, but also referring to yourself as royalty is very prideful. he was also a double agent, which requires a lot of cunning.
@@dualcaster That's right. Snape had pride in himself and wanted to prove to people he was better than his muggle father by doing well academically. He basically wanted to prove to the world that he wasn't nothing.
Sometimes I think it’s simpler than a complex series of traits that you value. Sometimes it’s the people you look up to, and the legacies that you value. I don’t know exactly why Snape values Slytherin over Gryffindor, but he believed that Slytherin was the place to be, and so the hat listened. Similarly, Peter saw James, Sirius, and Lupin who all wanted to be in Gryffindor, and wanted to be as well, so the hat obliged and put him in Gryffindor. Ditto Ron, Hermione, Neville, and countless others.
Snape was ambitious, just not in a way acceptable to the school. Sirius said it himself: Snape knew dark magic even seventh graders did not know. And even if Sirius was exaggerating, Snape still was one of the best potions students and created all sorts of dark magic spells while still in school.

If you really think about it, Peter Petigrew mangaged the MOST mischief out of the 4 in the long run. He killed 12 muggles, framed one of his best friends for the murders, had his friend be sent to Azkaban, lived in hiding for years under the Order of the Phoenix's nose, orchestrated the kidnapping of Harry (during the TWT) and brought Voldemort back. I hate to say it... he's one sneaky Niffler! 😅
I'm always so astounded at the feats the Marauders achieved during their time at Hogwarts. I mean, 3 of them became an animagus (a very difficult, complicated, & long process) AND invented something on the level of the sorting hat? Absolutely mindblowing
The Marauders map is the early version of the wait times map for Disney! I'm sure Harry used it to see the wait time at the bathroom, cafeteria, etc. With cell phone technology, I'm sure Disney could put our names on the map if they so desired. =)
what you missed is that Lilly was probably instrumental in creating the map. As noted by nearly everyone who talks about her, she was the most talented with charms.
Finally.....someone has explained why Fred and George didn't see Peter on the map with Ron!! Even tho i have read the series twice, my brain tends to combine "book canon" with "movie canon", so I sometimes miss some of the things that only happened in the movie. The exception is the burning of the Burrow. I was very happy to find that incident only happened in the movie. And, since I watched the movies first, I could hear the actor's voices in my head while reading....even if the scene didn't happen in the movie.

Ive always been thankful thay the twins were able to be well rounded characters. They very easily could have just been the jokers but even in the films you see their heart and bravery
The only issues with the theory that only marauders can see the other marauders is that in book cannon snaps see them going to the shrieking shake when he is delivering lupin his potion
True, but Lupin unlocked the map and left in such a hurry he left it sitting open on his desk. So technically, from the map’s perspective, it was a marauder using it and they’d have been visible.
The map is basically like the "Bible" in the American Pie franchise. Maybe actively handing it down to the next generation of chaos-lovers was practiced more often than just from the twins to Harry. Maybe they were even told by older students that they have placed the map into Filch´s office and stealing it is part of the ceremony to become the next "marauders".
Except Harry saw Peter Pettigrew. He told Lupin he saw someone he knew to be dead. That was why he was out in the first place! And that’s why Lupin was looking for him too…
FYI: Messrs is French abbreviation for MESSIORS (sirs or Misters); plural for Monsier (Sir or Mister) How did the Twins learn how to activate and use the Marauders Map? Answer: Peeves the Poltergeist told them.
I always assumed that the phrase wasn't a specific passcode, but that anything the map recognises as acceptable would work. But Fred and George "unlocked" the map using that specific phrase (perhaps when they were goofing around with each other) and assumed it was a specific lock and key, passing it down to Harry. I think if Harry just said anything along the lines of "I'm the son of James Potter" that would have been good enough too, and he'd of course get custom greeting lines from the Messers first :)
It's seeing the different editing styles of Riley and Ethan. Prior to looking in the description section, you can just get the sense of who edited each one. Both produce quality work and they have their own distinct groove.
While its origins are in French, “Messrs.” is also now simply the plural of “Mr.” In English - i.e. “mister” and “misters”. No need to involve the French at all at this point.
I really think the "Why do Fred And George not notice Peter" question is overplayed. The much easier explanation is that they aren't interested in Ron's whereabouts or the goings on in the Gryffindor dormitories.
11:50 I think it's a variation on this theory. Anyone shows up on the map as a set of footprints with their name next to the footprints, except for a Marauder. Their names are forever on the front cover, so they only show up as unnamed footprints. And if you didn't know about that particular feature, you'd never notice an extra person on the map (especially if the unnamed footprints in Ron's bed were the size of a rat's). But if you're a Marauder and you know that the only unnamed rat-sized footprints that show up on the map belong to your one-time friend Peter Pettigrew...

The theory where only marauders can see eachother on the map is easily disproven by a small section from Chapter 19 of Prisoner of Azkaban: Snape was slightly breathless, but his face was full of suppressed triumph. "You're wondering, perhaps, how I knew you were here?" he said, his eyes glittering. "I've just been to your office, Lupin. You forgot to take your potion tonight, so I took a gobletful along. And very lucky I did... lucky for me, I mean. Lying on your desk was a certain map. One glance at it told me all I needed to know. I saw you running along this passageway and out of sight."

11:43 To counter the editor quotes above, Harry is James' son and James was a Marauder, it could be that the map sensed the connection and allowed Harry to have "Marauder privileges" while using it.
I've always been a bit disappointed there was never a scene were Fred and George reacted to finding out who the Marauders were. Any on else? Maybe the Carlin Brothers could make a video about how they think the twins would have reacted?
Everyone always seems to conveniently forget that Snape, too, sees Lupin on the map in Prisoner. That's the whole reason he comes down into the Shrieking Shack.

@@meleardil Yes well if you're asking me you're bending over backwards to explain what is simply a plothole. Sure, if you absolutely must have an in-universe explanation - to each their own head canon, right?
The map was completely wasted on Harry. In the 6th book he's apparently obsessed with finding out what Malfoy's up to but never bothers to go and check what Crabbe and Goyle are up to when he sees them hanging out in the 7th floor corridor for hours at a time. If he had he'd have realised sooner that they were using polyjuice potion and standing outside the room of requirement
The same with the two ways mirror. Harry is not really good at using all the ridiculously powerful magical artifacts he came into possession one time or another.
Fred and George are my favorite characters in the series!!! They even were the reason I became obsessed with the series!! Additionally, James and Oliver Phelps were perfectly cast as the twins!!
11:42 however, in book 3, Snape was able to see that they were all in the shrieking shack because he saw Lupin running towards the whomping willow in the map, which Lupin left open on his desk.
True, but he couldn't see all the way to the Shrieking Shack, as it's off the Hogwarts grounds, so he didn't see Peter or Sirius. He saw Lupin, because it was Lupin, a Marauder, who had accessed the map in the first place (and who had unfortunately left it open), and as he was a Marauder, it would show the Marauders to anyone who looked. That's probably why the Marauders had the password in the first place- to close and lock it so people couldn't see them. And, if kids like Fred and George found it, and if they had the right mischievous hearts, they could absolutely use it, but couldn't use it against the Marauders. I just wish Snape had seen the map earlier because then he would have seen Peter too, and MAYBE things would have ended differently. (Though I still doubt it 😔)

I once heard that the spell to create the map requires you to enchant the map in every room, kind of like planting bugs/video cameras. It would require getting to every room, other houses and head masters offices, which is why the room of requirement is not there, even if mapped, it was mapped as what ever it was but it would need that exact configuration for the map to work. Kind of would be a cool story of how the marauders got to all the locations.
The theory of the map not showing it Marauders to people who aren't Marauders themselves, sort of falls apart when you realize that Harry also saw Peter Pettigrew on that map
I think its also worth noting that the map has been confiscated by Filch more than once- and stolen back more than once. 1. In 1988, the map was stolen by Peeves from Filch. 2. The map had, by 1988, ended up in the possession of Mundungus Fletcher. The map was then stolen from him. 3. The Hogwarts Mystery player found the Marauder's Map in the Icy Corridor along with Scabbers- who was still Percy's. The Hogwarts Mystery player does not know what this is, and gives to Rakepick. 4. Rakepick told The Hogwarts Mystery player the secret way to accesses it. The wiki states, "The Hogwarts Mystery player planned to use the map, and talked about what they saw on the map. They mentioned a person moving so quickly that they couldn't read the person's name. After this mention, Rakepick took the map, saying that the person is the one who attacked Mundungus Fletcher and that keeping their name a secret is to protect Jacob's sibling." The person who attacked Mundungus was probably Peter Pettigrew. Weasley

Just a theory, but what if the Marauders simply gave the map to younger students when they graduated, who then lost it to Filch. Idk, seems more likely to me than them just giving it to Filch or getting caught.
I come from a small town and in the late 80’s prior to Mapquest and google maps a student drew a detailed map of our town which a lot of locals printed and used as a formal map due to how updated it was.
The map not showing the Mauraders except to other Mauraders is an interesting theory but has one major flaw in it. In Prisoner of Azkaban Snape only knows where to go to find Lupin because he saw Lupins name on the map going down the passage to the shreaking shack. Shapes not Maurader and is a known enemy of the Mauraders so if there was anyone they would have wanted to have themselves hidden from it would have been him. @@meleardil but Harry DID see Peter (as a rat). That's why he told Lupin that he saw someone (Peter Pettigrew) on the map who shouldn't be there because he knew him to be dead. Additionally, if what you say about human/animal form mattered then Peter was a rat up until Severus and Lupin forced him to change back to a human, so if the map didn't see them in animal form, Lupin wouldn't be able to see Peter and follow them to the Shaking Shack. Also Snape wasn't even able to use the map, so he wouldn't be able to see Lupin anyway, he physically followed Lupin to the Shaking Shack, he didn't use a map.

I’m reminded of the conversation between Harry and Mr. Weasley, in which Mr. Weasley says, “Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain[.]” I argue that the Marauder’s Map could have thought for itself, perhaps, not as intelligently as the Diary of Tom Riddle, but maybe enough that it also should not have been so easily trusted. There are a few things I’d like to point out. 1. How did Filch know that this blank piece of parchment should be stored with other “dangerous” confiscations? 2. All the characters who used the Marauders map, ended up dying. (perhaps making their mischief truly “managed”) Now, I’ve only read through the books once, and I most definitely could be mistaken, I have just been wondering if anyone else had noticed this?
The theory about only the Marauders seeing each other on the map is awesome, except for the fact that Snape saw Lupin running across the secret passage underneath the Willow in Prisoner..
Veery unfortunately, Snape sees Lupin on the map when he heads to the tunnel on his way to the shreaking shack so even Snape - and therefore everyone, I assume - can see everyone else, even the marauders on the map. I would have loved the theory that they were only visible for other marauders but it sadly is disproven by the books.
Harry can not see Peter, but Harry can see Lupin. Snape was able to see Lupin too. Why? The Marauders are visible on the map in HUMAN form, but dont show up for others in ANIMAL form, only to each other. It also makes sense.

I subscribe more to the idea that it's an artifact of the school like the room of requirement, maybe even created by the room itself. And if anything its probably not a Griff item. They are too courage to stop and create a map, risking it all. It's slytherin in nature, answering they are up to no good. Maybe it was a ravenclaw item, knowledge without purpose, and it was on 100% of the time. Then our favorite 4 trouble makers added a lock to it. My favorite part of your video is how Fred and George figured it out. I assume the key was given with it by the room itself. I like yours much better
I love and learn so much from all you episodes. Thank you so much. I do have a question. I noticed that at least, 1st year James Potter does not have glasses.Any clue on why, or when he started wearing glasses?
I always wondered if they just...asked the map nicely instead of demanding. Like, "Hey, what do you do?" or something rather than "I COMMAND YOU TO REVEAL YOUR SECRETS!" That seems like a real simple test for the map to suss out.
I’m so excited to watch this, I’m commenting straight away because I can lol and I love SCB, you guys are my favourite RUclipsrs and your videos are amazing 😊
I like to think there is no real pass phrase, the map is just messing with them. Like, the twins found it and started talking to it like Snape did, and the map was like "I have found my people".
I always thought it was NOT a word by word passphrase. It was a magically binding declaration of intent in ANY form. If you are a mischief maker, the map will aid you. If you are a rulekeeeper, the map will hide or worse, work against you.
It was mentioned somewhere that when Fred and George found the map it actually gave them hints to figure out how to work it (so yeah your theory is correct you just figured out the process with some of the details that weren't previously explained)

Yup, especially since they test their products on themselves to make sure they aren't actually dangerous

Very possible.
It's likely.
Fred and George were definitely the only students that Peeves respected
That’s a really good theory actually!!
Wouldn't be surprised if the maraurders gave the map to Peeves with the intend of filtch getting it from him
I’m reading HP to my kids (4 and 7) and their favourite part so far was the Map’s insults to Snape. They absolutely LOST IT as soon as I said “abnormally large nose,” continued to laugh themselves silly through the rest of them, and made me reread them again and again. Gotta love those Marauders!
I remember reading the first book to my siblings and they started laughing over the descriptions of the Dursleys… 😅
When anyone brings up the "only Marauders can see other Marauders" theory about the map, they seem to forget that Snape only shows up because he sees Lupin on the map going into the passage.
I just reread that line. You're 100% right. How have we all missed that?
Well Lupin left the map on his desk open, just like in the case of Moody being able to use the map even though he'd be an unsavory character who doesn't know how to operate it, I feel the contents of the map are based on who opened the map, not who'd currently using it. Thus because Lupin opened the map it's able to see the other marauders, perhaps it's even an additional passphrase which enabled the viewing of the other marauders, which lupin invoked because it would allow him to see Sirius.
@@DreadKyllerOh, that makes more sense.
i think it's because snape is a specials case. he spent years of his life hexing with the 4, make sense not all the defense mechanism would work

I like to think the map was designed with a little of the marauders inside, and reacts to everyone differently. So when it detects Snape in Prisoner of Azkaban it insults him (because the Marauders hated Snape). But when it detected Fred and George, it told them how to solve it because it detected their mischievousness.

Doesn’t Harry see lupin on the map at the end of the third book? When he goes down to his office to say goodbye?
Imo Harry can see the marauders for the same reason he's protected from voldemort while at privet drive, the blood of his parents, he has the blood of a marauder

Honestly I could see a whole situation happen around this theory, I can visualize the whole scenario
The map: Are you up to no good?
Twins: "The parchment talks?" "That explains a lot" "Would you say we're up to no good?" "Most definitely"
The map: Solemnly Swear it
Twins: "Seems tedious" "It can clearly hear us though" "Worth a shot?" "Filch didn't like it for a reason"
Twins (In unison): "I solemnly swear I am up to no good"
And viola, the map's secrets were unlocked.
I was always surprised that Remus didn't ask the boys how they figured out the pass phrase.
I suspect that might be either Sirius idea or James or both
Given that he probably helped create the map, it is likely that he knew what the only ways to reveal the map were. That means that he would not have to ask.
Since we the readers only know (for the most part) what Harry knows, it's entirely possible that he asked and we just didn't hear about it
my theory as to how filtch got it is when the marauders graduated they handed it off to someone who lost it

What's more, loyalty can be also something of Slytherin - for instance, Bellatrix
Sirius- Slytherin
James - Gryffidor
Lupin - Ravenclaw
Peter - Hufflepuff

I think the map is tied to Hogwart's main entrance. In Prisoner of Azkaban, Flitwich trains the front oaken door to recognize Sirius in order to not grant him access into the castle. I think the Marauders could have put a spell on the entrance to "scan" and "register" everyone that enters through it, then link them onto their map. This could be how even people who have never been to Hogwarts before or even live in the UK (such as foreign guests) have their name and location appear up on the map.

Yeah, you had it right. Fred and George warn Harry that one of the passages shown behind a mirror had caved in, which wouldn't be necessary if the map showed it up-to-date. They also don't say anything like "look here" when they say it caved in, further implying the map didn't "know".

So many people are talking about Harry seeing Peter Pettigrew on the map, but that only happened in the movie.
Snape should've taken his potions improvements and published a companion to the Advanced Potion Making textbook if he wanted to prove his superiority.
This also explains why Harry could see Peter, being James’ son

The map is basically like the "Bible" in the American Pie franchise. Maybe actively handing it down to the next generation of chaos-lovers was practiced more often than just from the twins to Harry. Maybe they were even told by older students that they have placed the map into Filch´s office and stealing it is part of the ceremony to become the next "marauders".
Except Harry saw Peter Pettigrew. He told Lupin he saw someone he knew to be dead. That was why he was out in the first place! And that’s why Lupin was looking for him too…
FYI: Messrs is French abbreviation for MESSIORS (sirs or Misters); plural for Monsier (Sir or Mister)
How did the Twins learn how to activate and use the Marauders Map? Answer: Peeves the Poltergeist told them.
I always assumed that the phrase wasn't a specific passcode, but that anything the map recognises as acceptable would work. But Fred and George "unlocked" the map using that specific phrase (perhaps when they were goofing around with each other) and assumed it was a specific lock and key, passing it down to Harry.
I think if Harry just said anything along the lines of "I'm the son of James Potter" that would have been good enough too, and he'd of course get custom greeting lines from the Messers first :)

4:20 Was 5+ Peter a subtle reference to ATLA?
Messrs is the abbreviation for the French version of "misters." It also leans into the proper pronunciation of Voldemort.
Was just wondering about this the other day, so I’m really glad you guys have an explanation
Can't remember. Is Harry seeing peter on the map a movie only thing?

I laughed out loud at the addition of the spongebob audience! That was so unexpected, but hilarious! Great job to the editors there!
The problem with the theory about the Marauders being hidden on the map from anyone but other Marauders is that Snape saw Lupin on the map in PoA
Lupin had previously opened the map and left it open on his desk. The map cannot detect who is using it, only who opened it.
Harry can not see Peter, but Harry can see Lupin. Snape was able to see Lupin too. Why? The Marauders are visible on the map in HUMAN form, but dont show up for others in ANIMAL form, only to each other. It also makes sense.
The theory where only marauders can see eachother on the map is easily disproven by a small section from Chapter 19 of Prisoner of Azkaban:
Snape was slightly breathless, but his face was full of suppressed triumph.

Seconded!

(Though I still doubt it 😔)

according to Seamus' theory, was harry able to see peter because he is james son and some kind of magic that makes him now a marauder like an heir?
Honestly I just assumed that the twins never saw Peter sleeping with Ron or Percy because they never bothered to stalk them at night.
This! Exactly! Everyone’s obsessing over this but why would they bother checking on their little brother?! Like they care if he sneaks out?

I once heard that the spell to create the map requires you to enchant the map in every room, kind of like planting bugs/video cameras. It would require getting to every room, other houses and head masters offices, which is why the room of requirement is not there, even if mapped, it was mapped as what ever it was but it would need that exact configuration for the map to work. Kind of would be a cool story of how the marauders got to all the locations.
The theory of the map not showing it Marauders to people who aren't Marauders themselves, sort of falls apart when you realize that Harry also saw Peter Pettigrew on that map
That was in the movie
These guys are talking about the real Harry Potter canon not the film adaptation

The theory that only the mauraders could see other mauraders is great but a bit off because Harry sees Peter on the map and tells Lupin this.
Harry can not see Peter, but Harry can see Lupin. Snape was able to see Lupin too. Why? The Marauders are visible on the map in HUMAN form, but dont show up for others in ANIMAL form, only to each other. It also makes sense.
Just a theory, but what if the Marauders simply gave the map to younger students when they graduated, who then lost it to Filch. Idk, seems more likely to me than them just giving it to Filch or getting caught.
I come from a small town and in the late 80’s prior to Mapquest and google maps a student drew a detailed map of our town which a lot of locals printed and used as a formal map due to how updated it was.
whoever has been editing these videos (particularly this one and the thanksgiving hot wing quiz) needs a raise. absolutely ROARING 😂
My reference for this is chapter 19 of Prisoner of Azkaban about 59 seconds into the audible version.

The theory that only a Marauders can see the other Marauders on the map, would also have to apply to their descendants (since Harry sees Peter on the map). Additionally said descendants wouldn't have the same protections since Harry could be seen on the map by Freorge.

This felt like a classic SCB video and I loved it!
This video is so brilliant!
I always thought the Marauders' Map acted like Tom Riddle's diary. Maybe the four of them found a way to attach part of their mischievous memories to the Map, like Tom did to the diary. To be able to recognize Snape and ward him off. Hahahah. The idea of them having so much fun while doing those charms is hilarious 😂
The editing of this video is amazing and hilarious.
"I suspect it's a Zonko product", he said, probably dying of laughter inside =D
Harry isn't a Marauder and was able to see Peter on the Map (or was that only in the movie?). Or maybe, the map reveals Marauders to their the descendants too.
that was ONLY in the movie... Harry can not see Peter, but Harry can see Lupin. Snape was able to see Lupin too. Why? The Marauders are visible on the map in HUMAN form, but dont show up for others in ANIMAL form, only to each other. It also makes sense.
Thanks for explaining the pun in messrs. That one had passed over my head.
It actually is short for the French messieurs, so it had struck me as odd that they would use a French word, but then I didn't know who these "misters" were when I read that bit, so I passed it off as someone trying to be fancy.
I think the map might prompt someone into the right incantation, but if anyone were to spontaniously come up with the right phrase, it would be the Weasly twins. Also, if the map doesn't reveal the mauraders to non-mauraders, why did it tell Harry where Pettigrew was?
1) 5:19 why didn’t Dumbledore make a map for security purposes?
2) 11:23 Snape actually saw Lupin go to the Womphing Willow tho…
Yeah because Lupin opened the map and left it on his desk, that's why Snape saw them.

@@meleardil Cap. Harry can't see Lupin bc only the Maurauders themselves can see each other on the map. Snape only saw them bc Lupin left the map open on his desk.
And btw it doesn't matter if someone is in his animagus form or not. The map can still see who that person/animal is. The map isn't fooled by animagi, as well as it isn't fooled by ghosts or any other magical creatures like werewolves etc.
Guys its always appreciated the time, dedication and passion you put into your work😊😊😊😊😊
Solid theory! This is one of your best, in my opinion.
1:09 sorry guys but the speech marks are in the wrong place lol. Idk if ur able to edit it or not but thought I’d let you know in case you wanted to :)
Once again, a fine theory crafted and presented in such an entertaining way. Bravo! Please keep them coming because we need great entertainment and Harry Potter is such a fun series.
I think peeves the poltergeist might have something to do with it too, being the manifestation of troublemaking in the school, and his bond with Fred and George.
One of my favorite headcanons is that after Mooney dies the map stops working. Now the parchment only says “Mischief Managed.”
I've just finished reading the books, and I don't know if anyone else has thought of this before, but it recently occurred to me that there might be more depth to the Marauder’s Map than we think.
(perhaps making their mischief truly “managed”)
Now, I’ve only read through the books once, and I most definitely could be mistaken, I have just been wondering if anyone else had noticed this?
5:55 well James had the cloak, so he could’ve known the secret 😊
Slight error, I believe Snape says the reason he comes down to the Shrieking Shack is because he sees Lupin, Peter and Sirius there on the map.

2:11 They're laughing at the precautions... but the map is a precaution.
Most correct
I always thought it was NOT a word by word passphrase. It was a magically binding declaration of intent in ANY form. If you are a mischief maker, the map will aid you. If you are a rulekeeeper, the map will hide or worse, work against you.
A humunkulous is a perfectly made miniature person.
It is a non-living humanoid form magically brought to life. Size is not defined. :D
What if Snape heard the full prophecy?
What if Voldemort hid the Diary in Filch's office?
I love the 8 bit laugh joke because i always say I see in 8 bit when i take off my glasses 😊😂
It was mentioned somewhere that when Fred and George found the map it actually gave them hints to figure out how to work it (so yeah your theory is correct you just figured out the process with some of the details that weren't previously explained)
