      There are a few things I disagree with you about the marauders map.
      I think there's much more to the map than Homenum Revelio. I think there is some form of legilimency on the map as well. Similar to the magic of the sorting hat only a little less sophisticated. It would only encourage and give hints to how to use it to people like themselves. While insulting anyone else who it didn't deem worthy. They did forget to close one loophole. If you are told how to use the map you could use it regardless of whether you were worthy or not, hence Barty Crouch Jr. Being able to use it after Harry told Mad-eye (Crouch) how to use it.
      I also think that the map only works for places that the marauders themselves have been. I have no doubt that the chamber of secrets is unplotable but the marauders also never knew where it was. It's a little unclear whether Room of Requirement is unplotable or not. Draco did say that you can make it unplotable if you need it to be. That doesn't mean that it's unplotable at all times. It's entirely possible that the marauders never discovered the Room of Requirement in their time there. The biggest argument for this is Hagrid's hut. I doubt the marauders would have been as friendly with Hagrid as Harry was so it is highly unlikely that they would have dropped by Hagrid's for tea. It's also the place that Peter Pettigrew chose to hide after faking his death. Lupin also stated that he saw Harry, Ron and Hermione enter Hagrid's cabin and then leave the cabin with Pettigrew with them. He never said that he saw Pettigrew in Hagrid's hut. I would think that if Lupin had seen Pettigrew in hut when Harry entered. He would gone there immediately and not waited until they were outside.
      Also, as far as I can remember, the only common rooms that Harry has seen people in on the map are Gryffindor and Slytherin. He sees Draco in there when he was keeping an eye on Draco in Halfblood Prince. I can totally see the marauders sneaking into the Slytherin common room under the invisiblity cloak to mess with the Slytherins and in particular Snape. They probably wouldn't have bothered to sneak into the Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff common rooms since they wouldn't have had any animosity towards either of them. Also, Harry and Luna were using the map to get to the Ravenclaw tower in Deathly Hallows yet Harry never noticed Alecto Carrow in the Ravenclaw common room waiting for them? The Carrows didn't strike me as being smart enough to magically hide themselves in a way that wouldn't show up on the map and who knows whether they even knew about the map. Pettigrew may not have thought that it wasn't important enough to mention and if Barty Crouch Jr told Voldemort about it. Voldemort and the death eaters would have no idea what happened to the map after Crouch jr was caught. There would have been no reason to think that Harry would have gotten the map back, therefore, no reason to conceal one's self to not appear on a map. Therefore the map doesn't work anywhere the marauders have never been inside the castle and the grounds.

    Harry never saw Peter on the map, that was film only! The book provides enough clues to prove that a marauder in animal form could only be seen on the map by another marauder. Snape didn't see him, either, when he saw everyone else on the map were in the shrieking shack (because Remus accidentally left the map open on his desk). He even told Fudge that he never saw Pettigrew.
    This was a smart protection, and probably Remus' idea, as James and Sirius were too arrogant to believe anyone else could figure out how to activate the map. Remus was forward-thinking enough to see how getting caught just once would cause them all to be expelled and have their wands broken.

    that it shows someones true name despite polyjuice potion is actually one of its strongest accomplishments. Yes it doesnt show the full name but had harry actually seen professor Moody where the map showed Barty Crouch in his place, things would have been clear anyways. So basically the map protects hogwarts from anyone who tries to sneak himself in with polyjuice potion which is incredibly powerful on its own.

    • @Khaled91
      @Khaled91 2 года назад +3

      Exactly! It's not a limitation as the guy explains in the video. The map benefits the reader of the map, so the reader can see through the deceptions of a Polyjuice potion/Invisibilty cloak/animagus. So that's a huge advantage for the reader of the Maruaders' map!

    I wonder if in Hogwarts Legacy you will be given a special sort of map similar to the Marauder's Map that would make navigating Hogwarts a lot easier? I imagine in times past the school could have issued similar magical maps that outlined the floor plans of the castle, but with certain areas redacted and only your name and footsteps are shown, kind of like one of those digital kiosk maps you see in shopping malls. That could be a nice blueprint for the Marauders to have used when creating their map as I doubt any of them are skilled at drawing or know anything about architecture.

    I like to think the reason Peter Pettigrew was accepted into the Marauders was because his animagus form being a rat meant he could explore just about anywhere in the castle undetected. No room, drainpipe or cupboard on Hogwarts grounds would have been inaccessible to him, thus making it easier for the Marauders to map out the entire castle in no time, while also using Peter to do a bit of recon work whenever they skulked around the school, pulling pranks or getting up to all manner of mischief.

    What I heard was that filch didn't get hold of the map but marauders, in there 7th year intentionally gave it to filch. It was in a way that filch would think that he got his hands on the map with lot of effort but in reality it was the marauders intention. This was because they thought now that they're in their 7th year and wouldn't be needing the map. So they decided to give it to filch so that prankster like them if the coming generations like Fred and George could use it.

    The map never revealed Peter in the books to Harry. It only revealed him in the movie. If you go by the books which are largely the more accepted cannon, then Peter always remained a mystery to everyone but Remus who knew Peter's animagus form.

  • @barbiquearea
    @barbiquearea 2 года назад +6

    I think the map is tied to the Book of Admittance. It most likely only provides the name of a person that was admitted into the Book of Admittance during the Sorting Ceremony and won't add anything to distinguish them even if there are more than one person with the exact same name. I for one think it should have assigned regnal numbers to people with identical first and last names to tell them apart. People often name their children after their parents or themselves, who by default would also be given the same family names. It would have helped Harry a lot if the map identified Barty Crouch Snr as just "Bartemius Crouch" and his son as "Bartemius Crouch II".

    • @leventebardossy5962
      @leventebardossy5962 2 года назад +1

      I think there is more to it. Filch, Peeves and Mrs Norris also appear on the map, and I'm sure they never got written into the book. Also, it makes no sense why someone who was, for instance, trained in a foreign school, wouldn't appear on the map. We never see it, but I think Igor Karkaroff would, despite never being a Hogwarts student.
      My theory is that the map is linked to the entrance itself. I book 3, the door is trained by Flitwick to recognize Sirius Black. I guess the Marauders put a spell on it to "register" anyone on the map who didn't appear on it before. For the real name, I'm sure there is a spell for it. The spell was never found on the door, as it does nothing else, and doesn't hurt anyone, ergo nobody thought to check it.

    The Marauders' story and their map were some of my favorite parts of the third book.
    I was so disappointed when they were barely talked about it in the movie. We don't even know who they were and how it relates to Harry believing he saw his father.
    I was further disappointed by the following movie, and ended up not watching any of the other movies when they came out.
    I finally watched them a few months ago and they're pretty good. I just needed to see them as what they were: movie adaptations.
    I'm still disappointed about the Marauders not being explored though.

      I share in your disappointment although I will say both movies and books were a triumph in my opinion. Personally I'd have liked to see things through Peters eyes, he's portrayed as a runt like and evil figure but honestly I think at heart he was good just troubled like the other boys. There was an immense amount of love and darkness amongst the marauders, we get a sense of that but never a true taste, perhaps that is the nature of time and life, we only seem to get echoes despite our best endeavours.

    The reason why Jr. And Sr. Doesn't show up on the map is it's not in the name at birth. It is like a nickname. Just like how it wouldn't show anyone else's nicknames, as we all know people at the age they all are a lot of people use nicknames, especially in their group of friends even if no one else knows or just don't use them.
    But yes it does have a major flaw, or should I say JKR just didn't think about it when writing the third book. It doesn't show people the time travel or Lupin would have seen two Harry's and two Hermiones in the entrance hall. One of the pair with Ron that headed straight to Hagrids and the Harry/Hermione pair waiting in the closet while the other passed. As he did state that he was watching them in the map because he thought they might try to sneak to Hagrids. So if the map was "Always Right" as Sirius stated Lupin should have see the extra pair and new something was up. If he had seen them a lot of things could have happened differently.

      @@jamieA7Xfan90 Perhaps, but until the Map chose them, they couldn't use it. The Map chose them as it recognized them as being mischief makers
      Just look at Barty Crouch Jr. He could only use the Map because Harry had activated it. Barty couldn't clear it or reactivate it. Same goes for Snape, when he used the Map to chase down Lupin and the Trio. But when Snape tried to get the then deactivated Map to reveal its secrets, it rejected him and insulted him.
      I don't think that insult is specific to Snape, but an opening into the Map. If you recognize the invitation, the Map will reveal its password, and open itself, like the Portrait of the Fat Lady

That’s how it even knows new students. And it was written by exploring the castle, that’s why it knows about the passage to the shreeking shack but not the room of requirement or chamber of secrets because the muraders never found those places.

    random question.... do you think the philosephers stone give a squib magic? i mean its not as tho they have no magic at all. they can see ghostts, magical creatures, hogwarts. muggles cant see those things. especially hogwarts or the hogwarts express. but he can see all that so he must have the physiology of a witch/wizard without the secret sauce we call magic. but if the stone can grant eternal life, then is it not imparting magic to the elixer's drinker some how?

    • @clover2739
      @clover2739 Год назад

      Well yes, I don’t think the philosophers stone would grant magic to a squib. As in they won’t be able to do magic but they would have that eternal life. In fact Nicholas Flamel is a real person who is a French scribe who built up a reputation of being a alchemist who was believed to have created and discovered the philosophers stone and had achieved immortality. So I don’t think the stone is based off of magic exactly, which was why his name was so hard to find.

    • @thedailyracecar2064

      @@clover2739 i know who irl nicholas flamel is. along with his wife who both have streets named after them in france. squibs cant do magic normally. however, the stone can do many things. its clear that the eternal life granted is magical in nature. to simplify my question: since squibs have the biology of witches/wizards would the introduction of magic into anatomy designed to manipulate magic gain any ability to control said magic as their anatomy is designed too?

      @clover2739 Год назад

      @@thedailyracecar2064 I don’t think you got what I originally said, when I talked about the real life Nicholas Flamel I was saying that it’s more to do with him being an alchemist than a wizard. I don’t think it’s to do with magic, which is why it wasn’t easy to find him or stuff about the philosophers stone in most magical textbooks so I don’t think it’s necessarily to do with magic.
      Plus I think you’re confusing it, squibs and muggles can’t do magic, as in they can’t make stuff like potions or elixirs and spells themselves. However spells and potions and magical objects always work of them, even if they can’t see it or know it’s happening. A squib wouldn’t be able to make the stone but if the stone is already made it would work on them like everything else does.

The only difference between James and Snape is that James grew up whereas Snape didn't, something that an obnoxious Snape fan like yourself will NEVER understand. James was a lot more braver and ten times the person than Snape ever was. Also, James never 'took' or 'stole' Lily from Snape, Snape was the one who drove Lily away. Lily CHOSE to be with James, something you Snape apologist/fans are jealous.
      The one thing I will say about Snape though is he never really changed. Harry aside, he was a jerk to most of his students, look at how he treated Neville, as far as we know Neville’s parents didn’t do anything to him and yet he’s still an ass.
