  • Latest look at the Youghal - Midelton Greenway . Starting in Youghal at the recently unearthed loco turntable , and finishing at Midelton Train Station. The Midelton to Mogelly section is practically finished with tarmac and landscaping works complete .

      The focus should be on developing the area around the existing Cork Suburban rail catchment area to cater for future growth while upgrading the capabilities of the lines for higher capacity service, rather than extending it to some small town 40 kilometres away. At least with the greenway the route is preserved...

    It is such a shame to pull up all the railways through out the country, there's grid lock in all the major towns, its just going backwards.

    Is it possible to move the greenway to allow for reinstating the railway at some point in the future?

    • @dronehawk
      @dronehawk  2 месяца назад

      There's plenty of room to run a greenway alongside the old railway line however the issues arise when the railway- greenway come to bridges and overpasses , there's only room for one.

    It seems a travesty that a vital piece of public rail infrastructure is lost to another greenway. In this era of urgent climate action and road congestion it seems insane that the rail line between Youghal and Cork via Middleton is not being restored to railway traffic. The RPA still own the land of the track bed. That line could take 000s of commuters cars off the roads to Cork, improve quality of life for Youghal residents, boost tourism traffic and serve local commuters, not to mention reduce the CO2 foot print of road transport between this busy tourist and commuter town and Cork City. The turn table was recently restored to working order. Can you imagine the levels of passenger traffic this line would attract all year round? Youghal's local economy would reap a massive boost? Is it true the local chamber of commerce formed the short sighted view and voted accordingly that they didn't want to import anti-social behaviour from Cork City by trains at night? IF true talk about shooting oneself in the foot. Based purely on the need for urgent climate action this short line should be reopened to rail passenger traffic ASAP, and the historic old station buildings at Youghal restored. History will not be kind to the short term decision makers. Such a greenway will not attract the levels of traffic on the Dungarvan or Westport greenways because it has no dramatic scenery, just 20km of boring hedgerows to see, no mountains, no sea, no cliffs, no viaducts! Only 20km of line needs to be relaid on the existing trackbed with only 9 automated level crossings. No large engineering structures or bridges need to be built. Urgent climate action demands rail over greenway everytime. I enjoy greenways myself, but this seems a travesty and massive mistake that will be regretted in time.

    Its silly that they're turning this into a greenway, when they should be building new tracks and adding Youghal as a route with Irish Rail. It would cut down on both traffic and pollution, but no - one step forward and a thousand back as it always is in Ireland.

      @@rectangle216 There are 2 'animal ' metaphors to quote here in the discussion but I am not sure which is correct. Is it 'the elephant in the room' or is is a' sacred cow'?
      In any event everyone knows it as the right-guaranteed by the Constitution-to the employees in public transport to engage in industrial action as part of the collective bargaining process with employers.
      Although curses may be rained on the private car from time to time because of its idiosyncrasies . the private automobile is sometimes endearingly referred to as 'her' because it does not posses this privilege.
