Youghal Railway Station Turntable Video (June 2022):
Anthony Daly talks about the restoration of the railway turntable at Youghal Railway Station.
Anthony discusses the magnificent work that went into building the structure and how the metal centrepiece is finely balanced within the circular concrete structure. The wheelhouse was a device for turning railway locomotives so that they can be moved back in the direction from which they came.
He talks how the turntable was covered over with gravel and earth back in the 1980s to preserve the metal structure as the railway line was discontinued at that time. The remarkable state that the metal and nuts and bolts are in after all these years.
The next stage is to sandblast the metal and paint it in the old Black and white, and grey, railway colours. It is hoped to put an old train locomotive back on the turntable when complete.
