We are campaigning for the completion of the Connemara Greenway.
A 76km pathway from Galway City through the grounds of NUI Galway, on to Moycullen, Oughterard, Maam cross, Recess to Clifden.
Loosely following the path of the old Galway City to Clifden railway which closed in 1935, The Connemara Greenway is steeped in history.
We believe the greenway will rejuvenate local communities, create sustainable jobs and contribute to the health and well being of the people of Galway City and County.
The Greenway will provide a safe commuter path for cyclists, providing relief to Galway’s worsening traffic situation.
This green tourism initiative will facilitate rural regeneration and in the first year alone is predicted to attract 55,000 visitors, create over 400 jobs, welcome a €36 million local spend and adding €18 million to Galway’s recovering economy.
Travelling through dramatic landscapes, exploring historic sites and visiting great villages and towns along the way, when completed, the Connemara Greenway will be the longest and most scenic off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland with a multitude of activities, places to stay and warm welcomes along the way,

Since they’re building a heritage railway at Maam Cross, I think this greenway would definitely be a great tourist attraction.

The steam or diesel trains was the cheapest journey than any private transports

Ireland has been surprisingly slow at reclaiming the many old railways for cyclists and walkers compared to the neighbours in Scotland, England & Wales. Now there is the successful example (increased local income and more visitors) of the Achill Greenway from Westport, Co Mayo there is no excuse for not going full steam ahead on a Connemara and other Greenways!

One wonders why this hasn't been built years ago -- seems like a 'no brainer' to me...

I think think the main problem is too many adjacent property owners think they own land.

@@petermcmahon3557 so many land owners along the way know they own the land. The land and property was sold off by the vandals of the Irish state

Can we identify and publicise what and who is holding this up . Is it some vested interests looking for more
€€€€€€. The benefits could be so invigorating to the local economy that they far outweigh any possible objections. Can our local politicians not motivate themselves to get this done asap for the benefit of all.

On a matter unrelated, but relevant... Why did the state allow the quiet man cottage remain in private hands to be allowed to crumble and almost disappear. Why did the state decline the offer of Lissadell for 4 mill, although thankfully it is now in good private hands. Why did the state buy Durrow Abbey in Tullamore to allow the stunning house to fall into ruin. State does not do accountability
