    At last! SO pleased you have started getting into N gauge. I am 74 and have had n gauge for well over 30 years. I have around 40 locos all of which are dcc chipped. Farish/Bachman are excellent about probably the best around. I look forward to your future n gauge videos. Thanks

    Holy crap, as an N scale enthusiast this sparks my attention! I was not even one of those N scale enthusiasts pestering you to do it. I did not even know my people were lobbying you.
    I got into N scale as a kid because... well I was a child back then and had little space to build a layout in at the time. I stuck to the scale because I liked to build and modify trains later on and when I got the space I could fit more on it.

    N Gauge is what I have. Never had any problems with the split chassis in a lot of newer models. Most of my models are Graham Farish with a couple of Dapols too.
    Good to see you cover this Gauge.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 месяцев назад +4

      Yep - it's certainly not the same split chassis design we used to see from Bachmann in OO... much more reliable and also robust!

    I bought this set recently as well, seems to be a pretty solid runner. I've always liked how train sets in the UK are honestly complete trains, here in the U.S. most of the trains in sets are abbreviated (for obvious reasons). The shorter consists are appealing. I've never been a big fan of the track clips in the British sets. Try a loop of N scale Kato unitrack if you can, I think you'd like it.

    • @jamfjord
      @jamfjord 8 месяцев назад +7

      Kato unitrack seems super popular with North American N scale modellers - how realistic does it look? What code rail does it use?

    • @XNick291X
      @XNick291X 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@jamfjord it's code 80 if I'm not mistaken and with a bit of weathering/ballasting it'll look more realistic

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 месяцев назад +12

      Yeah absolutely - this is technically a complete and realistic train, if a short one... love it!

      I’ve been running o scale trains for over 20 years, I never had a issue with them my first set was a Lionel RTR NKP long hauler set, I remember when i first got it under the tree 25 years ago, engine tender and 7 cars and a caboose. Todays sets are way different and in my opinion absolutely terrible but this set is very nice I really like it, but I will definitely stick with my larger trains, but this is a nice step to try something new!

  • @ajorsomething4935
    @ajorsomething4935 8 месяцев назад +18

    I'd argue the scale is an advantage since you can get a lot more "scale miles/kilometers" of trackwork in the same space. A 10' x 10' nscale layout would have much more stuff on it than a larger scale would have in the same area. Also really fine details on the trains don't matter as much because it would take a much more critical look to see flaws like an undetailed cab or bits that are molded instead of seperately fitted.

    • @drosera88
      @drosera88 8 месяцев назад +7

      Yep. That's the whole reason I do N scale. I focus on operations more than anything so being able to pack more sidings and yard tracks into whatever size space I am working with is a huge benefit to make things more realistic.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 месяцев назад +7

      Absolutely right - I think that's a massive advantage of the scale... I reckon I could get about 3 scale miles into my loft if it was all N gauge!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

    • @mlalbaitero
      @mlalbaitero 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@drosera88 besides operations, you can potentially have more variety in a loop circuit than just a simple oval cause of the extra space

    I'm a new modeller, and building an N scale layout for reasons of space, plus I just like the scale. I watch all your OO reviews because they're enjoyable to watch, even though I don't care much about the locos etc as I'll never be able to use them. I still learn a lot about what to look for and what to avoid by watching them, as much of it applies to N scale also. So I am *ridiculously* happy that you're going to be covering N scale stuff sometimes too. Looking forward to seeing you bring the same diligence, fairness and detail to N scale reviews as you do for OO.

    One third of my collection is N including a modest layout in progress.Yes it’s fiddly and making/painting accessories is a challenge but it’s a space saver(my ho/00 layout is packed away)and I must say out of the fifteen locos I own only one has given me trouble as in motor problems and derailing.It lives in an engine shed on static display.You may have opened the floodgates for your collection Sam but at least you wont have to put an extension on the room.Btw half of my N collection is GF and locos and r/s are excellent.

    Welcome to the wonderful world of N gauge, Sam!
    I have quite the collection of Continental N and all of my locos are light, sound and flywheel fitted (also the correct scale at 1:160!). The prices can be eye-watering but nowadays, most of them stand up to HO/OO in detail where possible.
    As far as couplers go, my trains tend to be fixed rake and I don't do shunting. All stock is fitted with magnetic couplers which are very discreet but reliable (I use TJ Modeles couplers here in France, which are very reasonably priced and extremely discreet - the magnets are powerful enough that you can paint them on locos so they become nearly invisible). While I do have some larger scale locos, too, there's something fascinating about N and watching full-length trains snaking around the layout is very pleasing, indeed!

  • @Simon-Davis
    @Simon-Davis 8 месяцев назад +11

    Welcome to the small side! Something to try with the pickups on your Pannier is to clean the factory grease out of the bearings and their mounting slot in the chassis. I use the Farish Jinties, which are effectively the same mechanism, VERY reliably at exhibition on slow speed shunting. If you want the 'wow factor', I'd highly recommend you try the Farish 8F with DCC sound, but even the DC model is impressive to the point where its arguably better overall than the Hornby 00 8F.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 месяцев назад +4

      Thanks for that - yeah that's true actually, found the same in some OO locos - I always replace the grease when it comes to servicing... so I'll do that for sure!

    Welcome to the world of N gauge! Most N gauge models have working lights now, its mostly your smaller 0-6-0s that dont, but when you look at the size, its understandable. I would highly recommend the Kato class 800, they are amazing and are honestly one of the best models in this scale (for the price). Farish's diesels are great, and Dapol HSTs are good models too. Unfortunately, Dapols lack of Q.C is true of N too, but when you get a good one, they really are amazing!

    As someone who's been modelling in N gauge for 20 years now, I'm glad to see you dipping your toes into the scale!
    With regards to the features, here's my experience:
    Lights: most N gauge diesels have them. I've yet to see an N gauge steam loco with a firebox glow, but maybe there are some out there that have them.
    Painted cabs: Rare, but not unheard of. (My Graham Farish 4F has one, for example)
    Sprung buffers: I don't have any N gauge models with them. Maybe there are some that do, but I've yet to see any.
    I'll look forward to seeing more of these!

    I run n gage. A 6 X 9 layout, on DCC. It’s small, but after using it for a short time you lose the sense of tiny. Track laying is not difficult, turnouts like PeCO and motor like tortoise or cobalt work
    Fine. Most of my N gage locos are diesels. And crawling is not an issue. But generally I find crawling much better on DCC with a quality decoder. Couplers I use micro trains. They work flawlessly even over magnets for coupling and uncoupling. All my locos have lights etc. Kato is excellent, for performance but La la the detail as others such as scale trains or broadway limited. As far as rolling stock, micro trains is my go to standard.

    Hi Sam, one model I would purchase is a Graham Farish Class 37. It's been a whilst since I've had a look at either of my N Scale models, but I remember the 37 had glazed windows and directional lights (though they may just work on DCC), it has a centrally mounted motor driving each axle.
    My other one, the Graham Farish Standard 3MT Tank, was quite a poor model from what I remember. Details were loose in the box, the DCC chip didn't actually fit meaning the cab roof wouldn't fit properly. It isn't split chassis, but the axles don't have any bearings and sit in square slots. The valve gear disintegrated not long after I got it too.
    Overall, if your after a good model, go for the Farish 37, if you want a poor one go for the Farish Standard 3 Tank
    Great review sam

    My first set back in the 70's was a Graham Farish N guage set, I chose it as I would get the biggest set possible in the smallest area - I was 8. I now have a large collection of OO guage 'stuff', that, when we move back to the uk from Spain next year, I'll put together. For some reason, I didn't realise N guage still existed, let alone Graham Farish, although now Bachman, if I'd realised, I'd have bought N guage instead. An option for the future.

Since I'm from the US most of my engines and rolling stock are American in design but I do have one Dapol made GWR 4575 Class locomotive in my fleet. I absolutely love it. I've seen lots of your 00 reviews, but since you've ventured into N, I've subscribed. This video is an excellent intro to N gauge; as you get into it you'll notice things like: the Pannier has plug-in NEM couplers which can be changed to shorter ones; the wagons and the Toad have sprung couplers which are really difficult to change. If you can lift the coupling pin without the wheels lifting off the track - fine! Not many Dapol wagons pass this test, but it's needed for reliable coupling up as your video showed. Look forward to more N on your channe in the future! Cheers.

    Welcome to N scale!!! Super pumped as that is scale I model in myself! I've watched your videos for years, and now some will actually apply to me. You should check out Kato Unitrack and their trains, which is where I got started myself, and I still use primarily Unitrack, as I can setup a train layout on the kitchen table, and then take it down in 30 minutes after a fun weekend of running my trains.

    Really cool to see you starting to give N scale a try.
    Looking forward to more reviews if you decide to do any, I've been particularly curious about KATO's items and starter sets for some time now.
    I have heard a lot of praise about them and they do have some beautiful looking locomotives so, I'll be keeping an eye out to see if you review some of their N scale items and what you think about them

    Hi Sam, great to see you dipping your toes into the N scale world. I’ve been building a layout at this scale for the last six months - I tell my missus it’ll all be over by Xmas & then she looks at me like I’m Kitchener… 😄. Seriously though, I’d recommend checking out some of the Dapol N scale locos. I recently bought their M7 class & a class 121 bubble car (it has directional lighting; yes, lighting *is* possible at this scale) & have been well impressed.
    Anyway, keep up the good work. ✌🏻

    The newest models from GF are fantastic for detail. Also look at the new Sonic N guage locos with a fantastic low crawl. Putting on track can be a pain especially on something like a 4-6-2 with a bogie. Biggest problem can be points you really do have to get the alignment perfect.

    As always, it was an excellent review. I have a bit of N scale myself, though none are UK. Regarding the pickup issue, you may want to clean the track and engine before testing, as there are always manufacturing residual (mostly oils). I always do that with new engines. Cheers.

    Hi Sam, I’ve been subscribed for sometime but only occasionally dip my toe in as I model N Gauge and of course you haven’t done anything N Gauge until now. I started building my layout around 5 years ago and to be honest I’m a complete novice in model railways as a whole. I chose N Gauge because I wanted to run full length trains realistically. I have a lovely cabin where I’m building a layout based around GWR and Southern. I’ve got to say I have been so impressed generally with N Gauge and the details for such a small size are amazing, well I think anyway.
    I’ve built lots of kits and done some scratch building, it is small but doable but if your eyes aren’t so good this isn’t for you!.
    It was a really good review and I really do look forward to your next N Gauge offering, cheers for now Sam, John

    Hi Sam, I was sooo tempted by this set! I can see you getting more track and points very soon. A couple of vans & a B set or autocoach would make for some fun too. What a fabulous set, a little pricey, at rrp, but not bad at the retailers, & clearly quality. Cheers Same as always, Dave.

    Welcome to N Gauge! It’s a brilliant scale. Your pannier is lovely little loco, but this is a simple model. I just had a sound fitted Castle Class in the shop. Simply stunning! One of the best models Iv ever had in! The detail was amazing and sound quality was better than many OO models!
    Split chassis is common in N Scale. Many prefer it because you don’t have tiny whipper to deal with, and spit chassis allow for a higher weight too.
    On price Bachmann and Dapol tend to match the price with OO if they make the model in that scale too.
    By having N Scale now Sam, you can also review OO9 and HOe models!

    To start with, i have been a n scaler since 1966 when i was given my first n scale minitrix little donkey. That i still have and still run. I've been watching your channel for some time now, and though a bit bigger, i have enjoyed your 3d printing cars that i think you did a really good job on. So though bachmann is better now from my experience if their thomas and friends is a good example! However, in my opinion, if you really want to experience a good n scale example, you need to get a kato n scale locomotive set! They have taken n scale to another level. Parts, details, repair, and running. Thanks for the n scale video!

    I remember the original 57xx panniers coming out - they cost a whopping £30.....we are talking late 90's but still. The thing to consider with N gauge is that it's a different world than it was 30 years ago. The level of detail and variety of rolling stock options is leagues apart from the times when it was Poole made Farish or Minitrix.

      Much, much coarser. One thing to note with the new generation from Grafar is that the wheelsets are all (moderately) finescale and can absolutely run on code 55 track rather than the code 80 stuff they give with the set (I don't think they ever made anything else in house) but it all works perfectly well with the peco setrack. It really is a difference of night and day between the '90s- '00s and the current generation in a similar fashion to the triang generation and the Hornby Railway stuff now

    Congrats on joining the best gauge! I run a small 2*4 layout on a desk, or at least did until I needed room for a sewing machine for my puppetry projects. Once I get a bigger place there'll be room in my life for tiny trains again There's a lot of great stuff in N Gauge, and I find the focus more on proper running than fiddly detail makes for better experiences overall, and allows older models to stand alongside their fresher counterparts.
    Some misc thoughts from an Ameriacn:
    * EZ Track by Bachmann is bad. I don't know anybody who uses it beyond the basic train set. If you want to use something in a similar style, Kato Unitrack is genuinely great. The accesories they use make hitting switches very easy, and they have a full double track line that makes running multiple trains a breeze.
    * The Bachmann Thomas line I think is better than their OO Scale counterparts. Better running, better proportioned, even better packaging.
    * In geneal, I think that you can get a more "global" feel in N scale than in other scales. Japanese locomotives are primarily N, and so are many chinese engines. There is a scale difference between American and British N Scale trains but to be honest, I've hardly noticed it.
    * If you want some of the best N Gauge stuff, I highly rec Kato or Con-Cor. Kato's amtrak range is great, and Con-Cor's older steam locos hold up really well.
    * Finally, N Scale fits very well with the high grade model line of Bandai Gundam kits! So if you want your trains to be on a battlefield in the Universal Century, go ahead and pick some up!

    Great to see an N scale review. I switched from OO to N scale and you can achieve alot with N scale in a small area. Dapol N scale are good and so are Graham Farish.
    Also Kato track is very easy to work with if you find Peco a bit fiddlely.
    I think your reviews are very good

    Eyy, welcome to N scale Sam! Having dabbled in the hobby myself for over a year now, I'd recommend you check out a Kato set. It's my favorite brand to buy in this scale and their modern trains are the best runners I've handled thus far. They've also got the best track system, IMO. They typically make American and Japanese stock, but I have seen them make British/European stuff as well.
    That said, I wonder how easy it is to get Bachmann's Graham Farish trains over here in America. The last time I tried to buy a British based model (from Dapol) it cost me quite a bit of money to get it imported and it turned into one of my most expensive trains when all was said and done.
    Another thing I'd like to mention is that Bachmann recently released a Toad brake van for their N scale Thomas line. I wonder if that Toad was in mind when they made the Toad for this set.

    Hi Sam, welcome to N Gauge. Interesting review of the Farish GWR set. I’ve been modelling N Gauge for about 10 years and am running the Dapol version of the Pannier you were looking at. Interesting comparison of the two locos. I’m basically running diesels - the Pannier’s the exception - but all of them, apart from 08 shunters - have running lights. Also, almost everything is sound fitted, including an 08. The detail you were describing is really good, though fairly standard today, with particularly detailed wagons having recently been released by Revolution Trains. I’m currently running a Cargo Waggon Train, where their units are particularly heavy as well as highly detailed and also a petrol train, where their tankers are unbelievably detailed. Hope you enjoy your N Gauge experience and I look forward to some more reviews in the future

    Ok. So i thought i'd break the cost down. The loco retails at around £99.95 (dapol one being slightly cheaper for a 57xx). Toad brake van is £26.95 RRP, the wagons are exclusive to the set and they are £21.95 each (for similar wagons). For the Wagons OO Gauge is the same price (£21.95 bachmann 33-088A), the toad brake van in oo gauge is less at £24.95 (bachmann 33-300H) and the loco for a bachmann 57xx (closest i could find) was £134.95 RRP (Bachmann 32-216A). So the total without track or controller for OO Gauge would be around £203.80. Sources - (Derails for the gwr oo gauge wagons, Kernow models, Rails of sheffield and TTC Diecast for the 57xx). The wagons for me are a slight bain due to how closely priced they are to OO gauge items. I have not bought much new in N gauge for quite a while due to prices these days. One set i would recommend reviewing is the Kato IET. Its similar money as the set you purchased but its pretty special as a model goes.

    I recently joined a model rail club and was blown away by the N gauge layout, I was also amazed at the detail and content of the stock and locos… the detail is to me equal to a lot of OO if not as well engineered (less separate but similar detail levels)
    Would be interesting to see you tackle a full layout with scenics etc. in this scale, similar to what you started with TT

    When I re-entered the model train hobby a few years ago I started in N scale. I was very impressed as my few childhood memories of N scale trains were that they were coarse and finicky. Modern N scale is much more detailed and reliable. I'm more into HO scale now, but I still have some N scale trains and plan to keep them.
    One of my favorite model locomotives, in any scale, is my N scale Scaletrains Conrail C39-8 with DCC sound. It's so reliable, well-detailed, and strong for its size it puts some "premium" HO scale models to shame! It wasn't cheap but it's worth every penny I paid for it.
