A sentimental journey on one of the last passenger trains on the Cork to Youghal line.
In a train, you felt that you were really getting somewhere.
The narrator describes the pleasure of travelling by train as opposed to the growing popularity of air travel.
The Cork to Youghal line is now being replaced by a bus service.
Regular passenger services to Youghal station were withdrawn on 2 February 1963.

Should never have closed it..
I remember this route well. Our father was a driver in CIE so we had a free pass for our Sunday excursions to Youghal. We would head up the beach to a spot called clay castle. Our lunch was always egg and tomato sandwiches packed by our mother. A nearby cottage supplied boiling water for a shilling, you just had to bring along your loose tea and teapot. No teabags in those days. The return journey to Cork was always a drama with screaming kids most likely suffering sunburn and maybe a jellyfish sting. Sand got into everything especially sandals. Those days in the 50's and 60's had a surety about them that has now sadly been lost in these uncertain times. Happy days boy....
About 1964/1965 we went on holidays to Youghal train station. CIE turned old carriages into holiday homes, there were about 4 of them and we went on holidays, two families, Nana and the dog. Had the best time, going to the beach, meeting up with cousins from Cobh that had rented a house in Youghal, going on the swing boats. Candyfloss. Had a key for the toilets on the station that had been done up for the holidaymakers.
There were 4 bedrooms, the chairs for the table turned into ladders to get to the top bunk. We went to Dungarvan a year or so later.
The best holidays.

I remember seeing pictures of when my Dad and his family went on holidays in one of those. Can't remember where though, but in some scenic location. I thought it was such a neat idea.
Ireland used to have such an extensive railway system and it was largely shut down it's sad really.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👈 Things didn't change for the better.. Trains are still great to travel in. Just fast cars now and too many road deaths.

I agree with you, it would have been great if they'd kept the trains running and looked after the tracks. So many fast cars on the roads and some of the railway tracks have been turned in to cycling tracks called Greenways where the cyclists travel dangerously fast.

My grandfather worked on that route at that time and any other spare time was boxing and trainning the UCC boxing team.
The 1st stage of the railway line reopened in 2009 but the 2nd stage should reopen to cut down on 1) Pollution, 2) Car Accidents/Road Deaths & 3) Pollution they need a 24 hour service in summer months & St. Stephen's Day trains too.
They are turning the rest of the line into a greenway - once that happens, the railway ain't coming back.

@@martinwalsh3228 I agree but that is not what is happening. The plans for turning the Midleton to Youghal line into a greenway are already underway.
@@ewanduffy Green-ways should be removed from disused railway lines. There should be all relocated to seas, rivers, lakes, woods & canals etc.
Was coincidentally looking old Rail network map of IE few weeks ago, was vast enough.. Great decision in hindsight to close them...Yala.

Hard to understand how anyone could dislike this. They should never have closed the Railway lines or joined the EEC and allowed our country to be taken by creeping stealth and our fish stocks by foreign trawlers.

This old railway line is been converted into a green way for cycling and walking
I'm a laid back person, that's nearly to fast for my liking and I'm not joking.
Scandalous that greenaway is being put on rail line from Midleton to Youghal which will mean it can never again be opened as a railway line.
