@@FairyLotusUnicorn Film used
@@FairyLotusUnicorn footage ages. It called generation loss. As it’s printed in to more and more dvds or shown on more and more channels, the original pixels will break down and the quality will go down. I may have already been somewhat pink by the time in made it to the usa on Cartoon Network. It didn’t air in the usa until the show had already completely ended in Japan. It was already 5 years old. anyone who has only been able to see it online through streaming services, including crunchy roll, certainly has only seen its pink tinted coloring. Networks only own pink tinted versions now because of aging. That’s the whole reason this fan has to go in and change the colors, a copy of the original quality can no longer exist. If pictures and videos are saved then shared and saved then shared for long enough the original quality will not exist anymore. It’s why a lot of old media looks red tinted or brown tinted, especially cartoons. It’s the colors breaking down leaving those tones to stand out. It really is a just a sign of aging. There are generations who may have never seen the original colors. There’s nothing wrong with it, it just gave younger fans a shock lol. I don’t remember the original colors I was born the year it came to the usa and originally watched it when I was around three 😂 I have no memory of watching it that young and no memories came back when I rewatched it, but my mom claims I did. Of course you can see it in old merch and some current still, but the creators and business end seem to like the pink tint considering some products feature the pink tint. Edit: mystery solved! As CB below says, it's very likely due to how VHS's had more subdued colors for 90s kids and older, so the subdued pinks of the color grading may evoke more nostalgia in us than the bright colors of the original due to that! And that totally tracks, because I didn't grow up on Sailor Moon (rather, I watched it on Hulu as an adult). And yet I still see the pink as more nostalgic even so. However, I did have VHS's in my early childhood, which explains it! I think this is a very cool and interesting psychological phenomenon, so I'm glad for all the answers but especially CB's one that solved it!
OG
I think what it is is that the pink not only adds a lil extra girly charm that tracks pretty well with the show, but it also sort of gives a bit of a 90s VHS type feel, if that makes sense. It feels oddly vintage for some reason. More nostalgic somehow, even if it's not the actual original. It'd be interesting to hear from someone who knows about color theory as to why they think the pink does this.
Pink fits the girly and cute tone of the show, so some people think it looks better and more ""aesthetic"". It was basically luck that toei used a pink fading shitty tape to record it on wwwww
If it was on a tape that degraded to green like DBZ, it's likely that more people would like the restored version better bc it doesn't fit the aesthetics or the original colors used in the show
So like TLDR: toei accidentally color graded their anime
@@eldritchomen ah, yes, I figured that much. I also agree that it does add a nice extra charm to the show.
What I was asking was more like... Why does the pink make us feel this way? Like, psychologically. I understand how the pinkness plays along wonderfully with the girly vibes of the show. What I'm looking to understand psychologically, however, is why the pink makes us think "nostalgia", but especially the "vintage" part. Why does the pink make this feel vintage, when the original is older yet does not?
Why is it that this coloring pattern feels vintage to us?
@SpecialInterestShow I can assume that it has to do something similar with sepia effect, colors became less saturated, warmer more cohesive and brain thinks "looks like something old"
Just my theory
The warmth of pink is probably why people like it. If you look up color psychology you'll find stuff. Mostly it'll just give you a good idea, but there are a lot of contradicting things based on the context of the color and it varies across cultures. But it's a good basis to help you kind of interpret what a color means especially in conjunction with other colors and the specific shade of each that you are working with. Ultimately it's very subjective and you have to go off of your own feelings. In this case, because it is a very warm, soft pink, it probably has something to do with the coziness, creativity, admiration, love, and girliness.
It does also darken the colors which maybe people like that, personally I do think the old colors look better, though the pink background is nice.
It does add a nice warm saturation to it, and the vintage vibe of course. It's like listening to vinyl music, rather than digital.
Honestly the aged colors make anime look so beautiful. Especially sailor moon.
Yeah, theyre much more vibrant....which is usually not the case for colors. Usually they get more washed out and dull.
It's kind of like how copper turns green (exactly like on the Statue of Liberty) after a few years of exposure to the elements and people love that color a lot more.
I like that everyone has their preference. I prefer the original look because that's what I grew up with but I appreciate that there are people who love and appreciate the vintage look. I think restoring it doesn't take away from those things. We can have the best of both worlds. It's nice to have options!
i like the pink look because im blonde my skin is pink too, i got made fun of a lot as a kid but sailor moon always looked so cute
Pink skin and green sky is wack. I would watch more 90s anime if it had proper coloring. it just looks bad when its discolored. literally put on Tinted glasses, or Screw up you moniters color balance if you like everything tinted

I'm personally glad that someone took to restoring the original Sailor Moon to its former glory. You don't see that often nowadays. Don't get me wrong, the pink tint makes it look a little more classic, but you can't go wrong with original coloring.
I mean yeah. But hey, now there's the option to either watch it in original colors or the aged colors. So I see it as a positive
it really doesn't
I mean, no? It really doesn't...
The problem is that these altered colors, such as the pink tint of sailor moon, are usually the result of transitional issues in converting them to digital formats. And these issues can span a *lot* of different sources, from using poorly aged or low quality originals to issues in the transition method used, a lack of refinement, or to simply not having accounted for how TVs have changed a lot in the last twenty years.
The only reason so many classic animations from the 70s through the late 90s have altered colors is because a *lot* of them underwent these processes, where something went wrong or wasn't accounted for along the way.
If you had watched most of these as they were airing, or on VHS or any number of other ways that aren't in the modern digital formats, you'll notice a drastic difference.
@@shiftfire4511 True, though sometimes it's that low quality that actually makes it more charming and benefits more than an HD remaster.
In Sailor Moon's case, the pink filtration actually benefits the charm and overall appeal. Not saying that the HD restoration of Sailor Moon is awful or terrible. @@summersnyder5436 Twitter has just more fans. Less casual watchers in a way. And as a fan of alot stuff: Keep it original, keep it real. Also the pink "filter" has a major problem. @@livedandletdie I know but it just brings a nostalgic feel to it. I think I saw someone call it real rose colored glasses.
says someone who's too young to have ever seen a VHS in their life, let alone have "childhood" VHS's lmao
Yeah, it makes it feel like that old recording that has aged over decades. But not how it was. A bit like pixel art games. Stuff didn't look like that back in the day.
@@CockroachMunchingKrabbyPatty reading comprehension clearly isnt your strong suit. So to put in simple form, they're comparing the nostalgic feeling of finding old childhood shows to the feeling of the pink hue in the new sailor moon
Love how silly and adorable this one was, and the retro adventure game vibes were cool. An expanded version of this could be a fun tool to teach beginners how to type!
I have a color palette in my drawing software based off old anime color codes. I always say preserve the original colors where possible.
Based on the tweets you showed, no one is upset. They're all just saying they prefer the pink.
Its been a shitstorm on twitter for days; he showed less than ten tweets. Its a RUclips short what did you expect. You've also neglected the fact that the shitstorm is directly attacking someone who is just trying to restore the actual anime; they're targeting a specific person. Attacking someone whose trying to restore an old piece of media isn't "just preferring the pink" lol
@@Nocturne989 If they were actually upset, then show the upset tweets. Based on this short, the tweets shown are pretty passive, and are just saying they prefer the pink.
fr was about to say
it makes it seem like he's over-blowing it for content
@@roblue5470 definetly is. The most I've seen someone getting mad in twitter about this is one or two people saying that the people who like the pink one don't care about restoration.
@@Nocturne989Based on what he showed which were actually just people saying they like pink more, no arguing, I assumed he was being dramatic for comedic purposes. I assumed this video was hyperbole. A joke. A bit.
i feel like everyone is spectacularly missing the point there lol
its not about "it looks better without the pink"
its about "it originally didnt have the pink, so we should at least have access to it in the original colour schemes, whatever version is better or worse"
this
Absolutely!
It's just a light pink tone. Why so much fuss? People are crazy.
Exactly
@@malenafreak5774light...? this is pretty intense colouring
I like both. The og colors are great especially for color matching for art, and the pink tint of the video degrade gives it a very aesthetic vibe that fits with the show. Either way a win. ❤
Now I have to check what it looks like on some old tapes I have lying around
90% of Twitter: Ngl I kind of prefer the pink tones *surprisingly calmly*
Mark: THEY ARE GOING TO LYNCH PEOPLE IN THE STREET AND DO ARSON AHHHHHH
exactly 😐
right like he's exaggerating 🫡

Yeah. I think the exploration of the colour changing/restoration was an interesting fact, but I'm not a fan of how this clip is sensationalized
I mean, Twitter has been known to have actual psychos on it, so can you blame him? (This may not be an actual instance of that, but still.)
Mark: Sailor Moon has ANGERED THE INTERNET!!!!!!!
The posts: I like this version better than the other one.

DEAR GOD! HOW DARE THEY HAVE AN OPINION!
most of the screenshots he showed were simply saying that they prefer the pink. if anything this guy is getting mad over nothing
I dont know why, but I like the pink affect for salior moon
I agree. This is the first I heard about this, and I just think it looks nice imo
It's probably cause it fits with the show's cutesy magical girl aesthetic.

Twitter crying about a non-issue? I'm shocked.
"Nontroversy" is one of Twitter's main feature
As someone who has the old dvds(bough them in the early 2000s and they're fansubs), I always thought ppl were putting a pink filter on the screenshots. XD genuinely surprised 😂
i never really liked the pink, it was cute sure, but i was confused why it was pink if everywhere else its the normal colors
The pink is definitely a vibe if you want it, but this is what makes physical media so important.
Mark mentions literally any show and the comments get filled with people saying he "HAS to review it now"
I mean, I'd be down for it.
Sailor Moon was my gateway drug into anime. I used to draw Usagi from memory. The pink hues were definitely not the original coloration! My brain even said, “hmm, that doesn’t look right!”
What a social agreement is reached, you can’t manually correct it even if it’s wrong
You could spill a bucket of shit on the footage of something, proceed to clean it off, only for people to go ,"how dare you, the shit is what makes it good, you monster 😡"
Taking “rose tinted glasses” to a whole new level
Imagine putting in hard work to restore the OG colors and people hate you for it
The pink makes everyone look like a newborn baby lmao
Me colorblind and not able to tell the difference between the screenshots:
:|
Honestly it is not that huge of a difference, I think he is exaggerating the response it got
I think they _wish_ that its palette more closely matched the vaporwave aesthetic that has largely dominated 80s and 90s nostalgia in art for the past 10 or 15 years now… and like, I don’t agree with it, but the fact that this is happening is culturally REALLY fascinating.
i like how both of them look, though i like to admit that the pink hue of the aging makes it more dreamy
Flora has this "anime dead mom" hairstyle☠️
This is akin to people finding out white marble statues were actually painted or that paintings were not painted in warm brown tones. The varnish just got old and discolored the paintings.
I'm glad somebody's restoring the old colors! Shout out to that person! You're doing a hero's work
People are so willing to die on a hill no matter how wrong they are lmao wow
Tbf, the old animation being tinted pink like that does give the visuals some texture that they’d otherwise lack. It gives a kind of VHS/CRT look, rather than just looking like Hana Barbara
Mark should now review sailor moon
Yes I'm here for exactly this
I hear MistareFusion's about to review a Sailor Moon show, so might as well follow the leader!

sure they do! being angry at everything, and spreading hate and toxicity is their hobby.
@LaBeIIe Mark never framed the tweets as evil? Just that they said the degraded colors were better and "iconic" which is exactly what they said. Yall reading way too much into this short. When he said the tweets called it "evil" that was clear hyperbole. I understand alot of youtubers (particularly anime ones) just makes stuff up but I don't think this is an instance of this.

This is the animation equivalent of saying "I prefer the newer release of this song because they messed up on the remaster and now it sounds different, and any effort to restore the original sound is evil."
Most underrated comment! This sums it up perfectly!
