I mean, ingenue can definitely mean that, but it's also often used to describe a budding young woman who is entering high class "society". Ivy is shown be that, but instead she's entering a world of crime.
Great observation! Tracy and Fable are not just great artists, but great filmmakers too, the amount of detail is insane. Some smart cookie Ivy is. Let's hope she'll get through to the end of the series unharmed.
It’s nice hearing period accurate car models with somewhat accurate looks. The twin six is packard model that made in the teens and twenties. Jay Leno owns one, and a video on it.
One thing I really like about these films is that you can see the artist lines around their faces and movements. A loving detail and a mark of time, love and care put into the animation.
@@theberserker930 Precocious means having unusual intelligence or maturity for a child, adult-like reasoning and logic. Mordecai realized quickly that Ivy was incredibly capable of asking questions in a very grounded in reality way that was intelligent for a child. A simple lie didn’t entertain her because she saw how illogical it was along side other evidence, such as Mordecai carrying a firearm for some who is just supposed to be running numbers for a small cafe. He figured out quickly that he kept giving her the opportunity to extract more information she could figure out the truth even if he tried to lie... like what happened with Victor. Victor tried to lie and shit down conversation but that lead Ivy to looking at her surroundings more inquisitively: paying attention to what Victor was fixing and the evidence left behind. It’s more than likely if Victor ignored her she probably would of lost interest and left before making the conclusion of them being gangsters.
Interesting how the dead guy, Atlas, is basically just grayed out as opposed to how the other alive characters have color to them; could just be how he is though
In the comic, Atlas is a fascinating character whose motivations keep me up at night, and he hasn’t said a single word. Lackadaisy is masterful. Less than 200 pages, and more quality than we deserve.
Ivy's dad in the background speaking as Ivy sees the bullet holes? Perfect ambience for her own discovery "There were no bodies harmed in the making of this transaction"
The future of animation is not with big companies like Disney. They had their time. No, the future is with independent creators like those behind this marvellous series.
I agree. There is so much good content made by individuals or small studios nowadays. People have more opportunities to make content by themselves, then they used to have in past. And no one is limited by any made-up standards, by weird policies and so on. We can already see so many amazing art works. I'm looking forward to the future.
@@poenpotzu2865 I don't think they are interested in buying all of the competition, considering that 2D animators are unionized (that's what caused the big shift disney took towards 3D), and hopefully the animation industry falls back on the right hands once the CGI animators do so too
This definitely explains why Mordecai didn’t shoot her in the pilot when he was chasing her, rocky, and freckle CUZ THEY KNEW EACH OTHER WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER…
I find it interesting that Atlas doesn’t speak in this short. Like, at all. He was the boss of the Lackadiasy speakeasy, the place central to the entire series. His legacy is a shadow that influences the actions and future hardships of all of the central cast, and yet he’s such an enigmatic figure, even to Ivy, his goddaughter. Can’t wait to learn more about him!
Atlas being capable of easily intimidating his own friend with a blank stare, and then cracking a small grin to let said friend know he can go for that big warm hug, is more characterization in 10 seconds than some shows can manage with hours of runtime.
The animation of these gives such “Disney Renaissance Era”, when you could feel the artist in the animation, when it felt more personal, and I’m absolutely loving it.
(Talking as someone who never read the comics) I love how we learn things about Atlas without him saying or doing anything. Ruby is bowing slightly to show his respect, but looks confused when Atlas doesnt say or does anything and instantly goes to hug him once Atlss smiles, showing hes an imposing and respectable gentleman but also how close he is with Ruby, and later when he lets Ivy wear his hat for a while, how dear Ivy is to him as well.
I love this kind of storytelling technique - where the plot is happening *around* the child instead of directly to them, and the audience has to interpret a lot based on what they are seeing peripherally. It’s excellent “show don’t tell”!
A lot of people don't get it but kids aren't dumb by default, they just happen to know less about most things. The problem arises when the older people lookdown on and neglect to teach them. Even just regular interaction does a lot for them.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT! I keep saying that I was a dumb child but the reality is that I just didn't understand most things... and I had a pretty smart mind even then
i love how when ivy says the gangster line, victor and mordecai both react very clearly but for ruby its just his tail that curls up a bit. perhaps this is cause he's used to ivy's precociousness being her father and all. god i love this.
This illustrates Ivy's character extremely well. Not just her interest in mechanical engineering, but the fact that she was born a quick-witted, street smart criminal with an unassuming face, and that she knows. Most children her age would not respond with "What do you need the gun for if you're just adding numbers?" after noticing that the bookkeeper has a gun. Or the fact that she sees right through Viktor's lies, which he obviously made up to not have to tell a little child about war. She even asks him "Did you lose your eye in the war?" It also took her nothing more than the suspicious atmosphere, the gun-carrying bookkeeper and the realization that Viktor was installing armor on the car door because the previous one got shot up, to deduce precisely what she needed to know, which is that they're gangsters or robbers. And then, she immediately turns that into an opportunity and seizes it by blackmailing Viktor with this knowledge. She really is a born criminal, and easily the most catlike personality in the cast.
Hopefully without the weird, creepy fans and minors getting into content they shouldn't be interacting with (although Lackadaisy is acceptable for most kids)
I love how Atlas's color is just grayish in each shot we see of him. It perfectly symbolizes the mystery behind Atlas and his death later in the story of Lackadaisy. I also love at 4:00 Mordecai's sudden eye movements from shock to looking at Ivy then at Viktor in response to Ivy figuring out that they're gangsters.
Or the fact Ivy doesn't remember all that much about him, like we're seeing Ivy herself reminiscing of the past but even Atlas she can't recall much about him.
Young ivy slowly figuring out they're gangsters shows how clever and smart she was. I also liked how they showed her love of cars started at the young age.
I love how this scene captures a mix of nostalgia, mystery, and humor. The witty dialogue between the characters, especially Ruby and Ivy, keeps things lighthearted while still hinting at something deeper lurking beneath the surface. Ivy's playful curiosity and Viktor's dry responses make for an entertaining dynamic, especially with her attempts to figure out what's going on while poking fun at Viktor's failed attempts to lie. The bit about roller skating and ice cream scoops was a great way to add some levity.
If you haven't read the comics that this series originates from, I highly highly recommend it. The art style is gorgeously unique and the story is fantastic. The comics never actually finished because the creator went on to make the show but it's a great read.
I love how even if Ivy is seen as innocent and easy to fool, she really is good at knowing what are lies, what seems off and piecing things together. And of course, she's still a child so just guesses they're robbers + will try to get them to pay her to not snitch lmao
I agree! Ivy here is a really great depiction of how kids are smarter than most adults give them credit for while also still ignorant about a lot of things.
Now it makes sense why Mordecai instructed Nico and Sera to disable the vehicle. He suspected Ivy would be on repair duty so he would not have to face her, though considering how the siblings are pretty eager to unalive their opposition, that likely wasn't a good call.
Notice also that he had no problem shooting at the car when it was Rocky he saw in the mirror. But the second time when he saw Ivy looking back at him, he couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger.
2:16 environmental story telling! They're bolting boilerplate to the inside of the car door, and the upholstery has claw marks and bullet holes. This car has seen fights and will fight again.
I love that Mordecai tries to do the dramatic disappearing act like in movies, but this short decided to be realistic so all he did was dive behind the car and stayed there for a while hiding from the child XD
I haven't reread the comics in a while, but I love how I got every reference to them. I beleive I remember Mordecai's accident with his arm-- he kinda did fall down the stairs, but the main reason his arm got busted was because while falling, he was getting shot at. This also explains Mordecai's hesitation to shoot Ivy in the pilot, since he met her as a kid and clearly still cares about her and the Lackadaisy crew just a bit. Seems Serafine was right about them needing to worry about him getting sentimental about old times.
If you follow Mordecai's comic arc so far, it's pretty clear that he's tracking down whoever killed Atlas. Which implies that his care for Atlas is more than just "a little bit" (I don't Ship them, but there are lots of forms of caring other than romantic). And with Ivy as Atlas's goddaughter, I doubt comics!Mordecai would kill her... though it remains to be seen how much overlap there is in motivation and loyalties. I believe there's also a post where Tracy says that Mordecai and Mitzi spat like siblings, which is an interesting way to read their dynamic. I wrote a double drabble that was my best attempt to reconcile all the details we know about them and Atlas with the way that Mordecai and Mitzi have been acting and the negative way they act toward each other now; I think it turned out pretty good for being just 200 words.
I'm pretty sure Mordecai only changed sides because he's trying to find out who killed Atlas. And he kneecapped Viktor to ensure that he would never have to fight against him. He cares about Viktor.
@@pikathemimikyu6655 There's a page somewhere where Tracy dissects the meeting at that outdoor cafe, the point where Mitzi implies that Mordecai stealing their guns nearly led to Viktor's death. Tracy points out that Mordecai is trying to hide his emotional reaction, quite literally hiding behind the menu. I have some issues picking up on subtext so I always love seeing tiny details like that pointed out for me.
"there was a little boy and he ran yelling, Ma! ma!" You could see the memory in his face. I think Victor was calling to his mother about something much more serious.
I love the detail of Viktor coming to his senses when talking with Ivy...him knowing that she's in danger and trying to repel her to keep her safe. Love how Viktor protected her by telling her to go away, even though she got in to Lackadaisy eventually.

Precocious means having unusual intelligence or maturity for a child, adult-like reasoning and logic.
I love Ivy.

The future of animation is not with big companies like Disney. They had their time.
No, the future is with independent creators like those behind this marvellous series.
Hopefully, knowing how these big companies work I fear they'll just wait to buy out the competition when they are in a bad financial situation.
I am getting so sick and tired of people shiting on Disney it’s getting so annoying nowadays
I agree. There is so much good content made by individuals or small studios nowadays. People have more opportunities to make content by themselves, then they used to have in past. @@poenpotzu2865 I don't think they are interested in buying all of the competition, considering that 2D animators are unionized (that's what caused the big shift disney took towards 3D), and hopefully the animation industry falls back on the right hands once the CGI animators do so too

His legacy is a shadow that influences the actions and future hardships of all of the central cast, and yet he’s such an enigmatic figure, even to Ivy, his goddaughter. Can’t wait to learn more about him!
I think they just hadn't found a voice actor for him yet.
He's never had any lines in the comic either. He's always been the biggest mystery of the story.
Atlas being capable of easily intimidating his own friend with a blank stare, and then cracking a small grin to let said friend know he can go for that big warm hug, is more characterization in 10 seconds than some shows can manage with hours of runtime.

and I had a pretty smart mind even then
i love how when ivy says the gangster line, victor and mordecai both react very clearly but for ruby its just his tail that curls up a bit. perhaps this is cause he's used to ivy's precociousness being her father and all. god i love this.
She even asks him "Did you lose your eye in the war?"
It also took her nothing more than the suspicious atmosphere, the gun-carrying bookkeeper and the realization that Viktor was installing armor on the car door because the previous one got shot up, to deduce precisely what she needed to know, which is that they're gangsters or robbers. And then, she immediately turns that into an opportunity and seizes it by blackmailing Viktor with this knowledge. She really is a born criminal, and easily the most catlike personality in the cast.
Viktor didn't lose his eye in the war. Saying he did would have been the simpler lie, actually.

Though the idea of Victor losing an eye to an ice cream scoop is going to be in my nightmares for a bit.

This also explains Mordecai's hesitation to shoot Ivy in the pilot, since he met her as a kid and clearly still cares about her and the Lackadaisy crew just a bit. Seems Serafine was right about them needing to worry about him getting sentimental about old times.
