The Lackadaisy Pilot stands its ground in the history of 2D Animation. In this video I'll tell you how it was made, the challenges it faced, the wonders of crowdfunding, how I got involved in it as an Animator, and the power of "You got the job".
It is no exaggeration when I say Lackadaisy changed my life's course.

Edit: Season 1 Campaign was funded with $2 million dollars! Good job everyone!!
To me, the pilot was on-par to golden age Disney. the animation reminds me of stuff like the jungle book or fox and the hound even Bambi. This is really wonderful.
The Pilot was BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! The storytelling, the shots, backgrounds and animation were all so incredibly amazing!! I'm glad you made this video, as this was informative AND very educational for a person wanting to get into animation as a career. Thanks so much to you and the Lackadaisy team!
omg man it just premiered and you're posting this video right away!! i watched it without knowing much about it. I was just subscribed and waited, but it was amazing and i fell in love with it. thank you for everyone who've been involved!!!!

The fact they managed to animate such complex characters! Usually animated characters have easy to recreate shapes because your going to have to draw them 1000s of times but these characters are so stylized I thought it would be impossible to keep them on model! And yet not only does freckle look exactly like he did in the comics wedge shaped cheek fluff and all but all the characters are so fluid and expressive!
aw gosh omg this was such a lovely watch ToT I was an animator on it too and it was such a lovely experience. I feel like I missed out on a bunch due to my time zone, but despite that I could still feel how supportive everyone was!
as an aspiring animator/illustrator, my dream is to work on something like this, something special and meaningful and fun! I didn't know anything about Lackadaisy when I saw it pop up in my recommended a few hours ago but it inspires me so much and it makes me really happy to know that the talanted people behind it had fun working on it too, since the animation industry is notoriously unhealthy for animators sometimes.
Im actually glad they left the bones in the drawings. it shoes what its made of not just some content cartoon that was just spawned out of nowhere
Dude Lackadaisy showed the others how it is DONE. No over-reliance on swearing and crude humor to be funny... god what an amazing pilot.
I didn't know about the original source material, I just saw the trailer and was intrigued to see what I thought was just going to be a short film. Within the first few mins I was blown away by the passion that was jumping out of the screen and the pleasant surprise of seeing you and some more of my favorite animators in the credits. It's sad to see projects like this being too risky for studios to fund in the modern day, but the success story of this pilot from the dedication of the crew to the crazy support from the fans has me hopeful. This story was really inspiring. Well done to everyone involved - the end result was beautiful! Hope to see it as a full series some day.
I agree that we need more cartoons that are shifting towards the young adult audience.
I didn't know this web comic existed until I came across the pilot. I hope I can become a decent animator someday.
I actually found this AFTER seeing the pilot, so it kinda feels like watching a behind the scenes special you get as an extra on a DVD.

That use of such a simple phrase as "you got the job" to combat imposter syndrome is actually quite brilliant and sounds like it created a Core Memory in regards to working on projects like this. Much kudos to Fable for being able to lead and inspire so seemingly easy.
When I spotted hunicast in this I was like !!!!!! and then when I saw the far-fetched shout out at the end I was like !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha thank you so much dude and also you are an incredible animator dude, never forget that. This was a fantastic look over the pilot's production. Absolutely agree with everything you bring up.
this show is fucking inspiring. its a beacon for anyone that wants to seriously pursue their art career. With all the doom and gloom in the industry currently taking hold I think its important to realize that if we want our art to leave an impact and keep making these projects we need to look out for each other and create a community that matters. Big corporations or a mayority of the public might dismiss our contributions as artists as meager or unimportant but as long as there are people that have a vision and care about telling stories you will have a place to belong. I know we tend to be lofty dreamers that shut themselves off in their room to sketch away at stuff alone for days - but if there ever was a time to actually look for other people to share your projects with and work together... its now. cheers folk!
This was so amazing Manu! I got to clean up 2 of your scs and they were an absolute honor. You’re an all around talented and lovely person. I hope to work with you again in the future!
oh man you can totally tell a bunch of the artists involved in this pilot were fans of the webcomic, the passion is just BURSTING out of it!! thank you so much for helping to make such a gorgeous animation, i hope we get to see more lackadaisy in the future!
