That all said, it was amazing. And frankly, I love her work and the fact that she did decide to animate her series. Honestly almost prefer the pilot to the comics.
Imo Lackadaisy blows Helluva out of the water. The author is a master of characterization and world building and as long as she maintains creative control, I think it’s going to do great things. Helluva kind of turned into a hot mess; I don’t think it’s as well written/crafted. No hate, it’s fun, it’s just not on the Lackadaisy level
@@Gorypaladin346 this is exactly how it is with the Omori Game. It's concept and production was before Undertale but because it took like 8 years to finally be complete and be released, like 5-6 years after Undertale, it often gets compared to Undertale and judged as if it is an Undertale-inspired game.

@@acanimatics906 oh I agree, I don’t dislike the changes. In the comics it took a while to meet Wick, and the Cajun twins. Better to have the players introduced early
It’s crazy to me Lackadaisy now has an animated pilot, i was reading that in Middle School in 2007. So many awesome webcomics deserve the same treatment.
I really enjoyed how this pilot conveyed how Mordecai is a calculating professional from how he recognizes the type of pistol being fired at him and starts counting the shots in the pistol and comes out of cover when the pistol needs to be reloaded. As well as deciding not to shoot because he knows it is unlikely his shot is going find its mark.
I love the Lackadaisy pilot, It's an absolute masterpiece! Everyone who participated in the project did an outstanding job bringing the animation to life!!!
As somebody who saw it uploaded and sent to my recommended around 4 hours after release I can tell you I have watched the pilot over 6 or 7 times now. I absolutely loved this pilot and I've nearly no knowledge regarding the original webcomics. I for one am EXTREMELY excited to see where the story goes next and am going to have to stop myself from looking at the original comic so I don't spoil anything. (Also I genuinly have such a huge love for the Prohibition 20's era and 40 and 50s noir style they went for, I've always loved things like the old architecture and jazzy music style)
From everything I can tell as a reader of the webcomic, the pilot takes place sometime after the last part of the comic (which didn't have an ending so much as a pausing mid-sentence). So unless you care about spoiling like potential characters that show up or worldbuilding, you'll be fine to read it and not have story beats spoiled, etc... My rationale: the clothes Ivy wears in the short are only seen near the end of the comic, and (warning: very minor spoilers:) the coffin wouldn't have been "sunset rose"-filled until after the comic.
@@innersight6070 No. This is obviously impossible... Rocky's "Mississippi" poem is near the start of the comic, but in a completely different context. This is very different from Helluva Boss tho. For one, it is set in the 1920s, it doesn't rely much on humor, and the art style is very different. Not to mention, the three main characters have very big difference when it comes to personality. Plus, the lore is the biggest difference. I can't wait for this show to continue.
it makes me so happy that it has received so many views. there are too many jaw-dropping animations on youtube that barely reach 200k, and its always so sad to see it. lackadaisy deserves every bit of attention it gets and then some

The original webcomic was one of my favourites way back when it started. I didn't know about this existing until this weekend, but have already watched it three times. Really hope there is more to come. Absolutely loved every frame of this.
Lackadaisy is a masterpiece. I didn't know anything about the series, so I went into it blind. I enjoyed the mystery and not really knowing what was going on at first.
I absolutely love Lackadaisy. I love every character! I love every detail! I hope they come out as an entire series! I think I love Rocky the most because he's adorable, musical, and insane; 3 ingredients for a great character.
Saber spark made a video. I watched the pilot after he advised to do that, and it was glorious. I went back to the comic and quickly read 10 chapters now I’m hooked. Seeing people pour their hearts and souls into something gives me hope that the independent animation renaissance is upon us.
This pilot for Lackadaisy is in one word: Amazing! Speaking of setting up the premise of the show. The Pilot schuffels around some of the scenes from the webcomic. The webcomic begins with a intro explaining the death of Atlas & Mitzi getting Lackadaisy. That opening scene with Rocky does happen a bit later after the intro.
I found out about the short through Saberspark, watched it like 3 times, blew through the webcomic, and watched it a few more times. It took me a whole 72 hours to become hopelessly obsessed with this world.
I found this story learning to draw, but lemme tell you- that swirl of flowers at the beginning really sold me. That moment perfectly captured the poem. So, so good! Also, electroswing dub drop in a 1920's car chase? Point awarded. Such a great choice.
This pilot was a marvelous work of art! Much like Hazbin and Helluva, I hope more projects like these continue to flourish because they're giving the mainstream media a run for its money!
I also love the construction lines, it’s a great distinct little feature. It took me a minute to notice because I was sobbing watching the opening scene, it was just so pretty 😭😭❤️❤️
Honestly, 1920s + anthro furry people is just plain interesting. Well, the 1920s in general are an interesting setting. Also the guns :))) are kinda accurately portrayed, so big props on that
I watched the pilot when it came out, and four months later I’ve read the entire comic and pledged $50 for the series kickstarter. What an amazing show this will be!!
Lackadaisy really inspired me. I’m personally working on my own animated series and seeing stuff like this always lifts my spirits. I’m hoping the best for the lackadaisy team ❤
I love the comic so much and I'm happy that the animated pilot is so well received. The intrigue the comic creates throughout its run is so GOOD and the art and layout has continued to grow more and more amazing?? It's crazy. Love these gangster cats
i ran into the lackadaisy webcomic by total random when they were still in the process of making the pilot and was hooked as soon as i saw serafine because i felt an instant kinship with the voodoo queen and this lead me to buying the lackadaisy emoji pack (despite my inability to actually USE them) and a bad ass serafine poster that is currently pinned to my wall. lackadaisy is both funny and dramatic and i REALLY hope it get's a full animated series because it needs one and i need more serafine in my life.
My mind is absolutely blow at the pilot. Masterpiece! That opening scene alone was jaw-droppingly gorgeous. The poetry! And the music?! And the animation is next-level, so fluid! Amazing, I'm so excited for more.
Thanks for this- I had no idea what Lackadaisy was, but when it cropped up in my feed the other day I bookmarked it because it looked cool and intriguing. Will definitely watch now!
Another huge plus for me personally was that they had captioning. Like not auto generated but actual captioning. As a hoh person who has a lot of trouble watching shows without them as music can sometimes be just a little too loud/distracting, it made me immediately have respect for the people behind it without knowing much else. I love Lackadaisy so much, it's so amazing
Been a fan for sooooo long can't believe I actually saw the animation n how it finally turned out. Best web comic turned it into an amazing animation they made.
The cusp of this new age: the indie animation renaissance, feels like just the creative poke mainstream animation needs to realize they need to go back to prioritizing the art above all else. In other words, it’s a wake up call. Not to say indie animation can beat the big animation companies/studios. But rather inspire them to get back to their roots as storytellers again. We have indie projects like Hullabaloo, Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel, Villainous (which was picked up by CN years ago), Long Gone Gulch, Monkey Wrench, The Amazing Digital Circus, Murder Drones, and of course, Lackadaisy, that’s pioneering a new trail for animation and storytelling where studios like Disney and Pixar used to.
Damn. I did see this on a non signed in account, I meant to check this out but I 1000% will do now. Also thanks Johnny for the other suggestions! Looks amazing! Makes me really inspired to want to finally get my ass in gear and finally make my own stories
Discovered this series through the pilot. Fell in love with it! My top fav female characters are Serafine and Mitzi. Serafine is my number one though, this guy cannot go wrong with a sharp dressed woman who knows how to handle a B.A.R. And is crazy in all the good ways possible in my opinion. I enjoy her character so much that I have her tattooed on my arm and I’m proud to say it 😊. As for Mitzi, well she is just adorable. I lover her character design so much. Can’t wait to see the new episodes!
Lackadaisy is wonderful. I love the comic so much and this pilot was amazing. I really hope that this animated series kicks off. I particularly love the 1920's Prohibition Era settings and music, so it was nice seeing it come to life. I hope this, as well as other animated projects, take off and find success.
I never read this comic but I think the pilot is just a good way to give people a feel of Lackadaisy’s world and cast and the potential it holds for the animation medium Especially considering it’s a short film too, they probably wanted to focus on grabbing people’s attention first In my perspective if this pilot helps them get the attention and traction they need for a future project of a mini series or something like that to happen, they’d probably go the more classic route of the intro style and whatnot rather than just tossing you into the chaos and then doing “some plot” or whatever you want to call it I’m bad at wording so idek if that makes sense lmao
You pretty much said everything I had on my mind watching this video. And I gotta say I *loved* this pilot, especially the antagonists who are just so much fun despite their motivations. (But I feel obligated to point out that that's a Steam Shovel, not a tractor. It's the precursor to the modern excavator. This means almost nothing to anyone whose not an engineering history fetishist, except that Rocky probably couldn't have started a Steam Shovel fast enough to ride to the rescue, because a steam engine needs time to boil up a head of steam before it can move.) : P
To see lackadaisy get its attention is amazing and awe inspiring for me. Personally I love it because I’m a history nerd and love everything about history especially the prohibition era, so it stuck to me very easily and very quick. I hope to see more of Lackadaisy in the future
ayyye! Been with this project since 2020. Been part of the discord since the same year. It is so surreal to see so many people love this thing I have loved for years. ❤❤❤
This was a really good video and I agree with a lot of your points. I liked that, even though Rocky's solution was fun and entertaining, the show did still acknowledge how threatening Mordecai, Serafine, and Nico were, and just how lucky the trio was to get out. But I also do agree with you this cast has so much history, and the way it was all introduced did leave a little to be desired as far as hinting to that and the direction of the series. Still great, but if they do get picked up, I agree they may want to be clearer in future episodes. Though, a small correction, the trio is young, but they are all young adults by the start of the story (1927, I believe).
I started to watch this on my lunch break a day or two after it released. After 30 seconds I waited till I got home to finish, didn't want to cheapen the experience with bad glare and sound. I've legitimately lost count of how many times I've watched since.
I agree the studios weary of new ideas has made it difficult to support their lackluster content. Sure seeing Futurama come back is somewhat exciting, but we're all starved for new original content which is why independent animation is growing right now. I too didn't know about Lackadaisy until the pilot dropped and now I'm invested and will likely check out the webcomic too.
Lackadaisy was unbelievably good from the first comic the creator posted. She is absolutely insane with he dedication to period-accurate design and it shows if you followed he for the years before it came to the animated feature. Unbelievably talented and good.
I’ve seen the jazz cat dance loop once and fell in love but had no idea that an animation was in the works or a web comic. Now I’ve watched it about 10 times and am reading the web comic!
Well, you are the guy who got me into Disenchantment so I'll do it. Although, going off by the view number I don't see what I can really do to contribute.
I mean, I wasn't going to. By the time, Lackadaisy was on my radar, it had a fandom problem. I had no idea that was my issue with it until I started watching this video. I'm over the idea of fandom issues now. All fandoms have them, and if people assume things about me because I like a cartoon, that's kind of a red flag. Anyway, about twelve seconds into this video, I realized wow, I need to watch this show. And probably go back and read the comic, too. Great video, Johnny! I always trust your recommendations, and I can't wait to watch this. I'm going to cry a lot, I can tell. Pretty art makes me cry sometimes.
I went to watch LACKADAISY because of this video and I instantly became a fan! I honestly believe that indie animation is carrying modern animation and I can't wait to see more.
It’s such a wonderful Piece of Art! I’ve watched the Pilot at launch and over 60 times in the last few days. I’m so glad the Pilot has released and I can’t wait for more! I loved Rocky’s beautiful Poetic Serenade to the Mississippi River was absolutely beautiful. I feel like I relate to Rocky the most, especially with his fluency in Poems and his maniacal side. The Pilot and The Comics have inspired me to return to my own Art and to hone my skills so I can make my own Creations come to life. I really really really hope we get more Lackadaisy in the Future. And it truly deserves to have a series with how truly wonderful it is. I’m so excited for the Future! ❤️😻❤️
The “adult animation genre” or whatever they call it now has like a stigma to it? Thanks to the success of the Simpsons, South Park and then Rick and Morty people seem to think adult animation can *only* be crass and crude comedy. But lore and character development and ongoing story are so much fun! Has so much potential! And can look absolutely gorgeous while doing so. Why else would Gravity falls, Steven Universe, The Owl House, Amphibia, My little Pony and Adventure time be so popular with kids *and* adults?
This. Just all of this. Animation for adults invokes a certain vibe but animation is a medium and not a genre and creators (mostly those in big studios) need to stop thinking of it as one. We need to allow animation for adults to be as compelling and thought provoking as live action equivalants. I've seen animation "for kids" be more mature and full of life than animation geared to adults (like the ones you mentioned).
I also didn't know about it. It just popped up in a suggestion on youtube on release day. I hovered over it and decided to watch it out of curiosity. :) Didn't realize it was such a big hit!
Been reading Lackadaisy for a long time I didn't think we'd ever get a fully animated film and I didn't think it would be this good but I should of known better with the rep it has.
I fall in love with Lackadaisy very late as of earlier this year due to the trailer. And I've been hooked ever since! I already read through the comic and reread it ten times or so, I loved the pilot and felt it did a pretty good, decent job of jumping you right into the world & story also giving you a taste of some of the characters. And making you want more of there stories. While not super perfect, I still enjoyed it so much. I deeply hope the Lackacrew will get more good opportunities from this pilot because I want more. 🙏🏾 ❤
I would strongly second this one - it’s a travesty that it doesn’t also have millions of views by now. In a year where Helluva Boss is in its second season, Lackadaisy premiered, The Last of Us had its first season, and the Super Mario movie dropped, this was somehow both the independent animation and video game adaptation that impressed me most. It’s done mostly by one guy in a ‘70s animation / neo-noir sci-fi aesthetic that just oozes style, and the dialogue writing and line delivery are a league above contemporary cartoons not named BoJack Horseman. Unlike the frenetic pace of most modern animation, it gives itself room to breathe and languish, which lends it a weight you don’t often see. It’s incredible that it’s all in service to what amounts to a fancy fan fiction. And not to disparage the notion of a passion project for an established property, but it’s kind of a shame that it’s not its own thing, as it probably means that even in this indie animation boom, it’s not going to get the attention it deserves.
Watch something this golden and perfect, that's full of heart and love, makes you really really mad at companies like Disney who waste everything from gobs of money, time, and talent to push controversial junk, getting into cultural and political fights, and making trashy content, burning there bridges with fans
You don’t have to beg I wanted to watch this for a long time. It’s great to see awesome original animation I can only imagine all the hard work that went into this, well worth it.
I feel bad because I know it's going to be endlessly compared to Helluva boss. And this was a good enough pilot on its own.

This is weird. Lackadaisy showed up on my recommendations before this was posted. I'll check it out.
i went to the website after watching the pilot, and i was shocked by how good the website was.
Alright you twisted my arm... I'll watch it... again... for like the 12th time
Thanks for this- I had no idea what Lackadaisy was, but when it cropped up in my feed the other day I bookmarked it because it looked cool and intriguing.
One of my favourite animations recently is Whitefall. It's a story about wolves with powers and it's very interisting! Would totally reccomend!
Top Notch, kept hearing the name for the past week, glad you recommended, may not have checked it out otherwise
I bought the new vol. 1 book that will be coming this year some weeks after watching this Pilot, I really hope it thrives and becomes something big
People should also read the web comic, it's amazing in many ways. The art, story, and ties to history is both unique and well thought out.
I never read this comic but I think the pilot is just a good way to give people a feel of Lackadaisy’s world and cast and the potential it holds for the animation medium
Especially considering it’s a short film too, they probably wanted to focus on grabbing people’s attention first
In my perspective if this pilot helps them get the attention and traction they need for a future project of a mini series or something like that to happen, they’d probably go the more classic route of the intro style and whatnot rather than just tossing you into the chaos and then doing “some plot” or whatever you want to call it
I’m bad at wording so idek if that makes sense lmao
Thanks for all the recommendations! You sure know your stuff!
Honestly, Glitch productions deserves a shout out too. They're making great animated shows right now!
As someone who started reading Lackadaisy in '07, it's wild to see how far everything has come
5:10 YES i love the rough draft lines when they pop out, its so personal feeling, they need to keep it
I agree the studios weary of new ideas has made it difficult to support their lackluster content. Sure seeing Futurama come back is somewhat exciting, but we're all starved for new original content which is why independent animation is growing right now. I too didn't know about Lackadaisy until the pilot dropped and now I'm invested and will likely check out the webcomic too.
I am a big fan of the Lackadaisy web comic. When I saw the pilot, I love it. I hope this become an animated series.
Amazing for a pilot! I havent read the comics yet and it looks awesome
Lackadaisy was unbelievably good from the first comic the creator posted. She is absolutely insane with he dedication to period-accurate design and it shows if you followed he for the years before it came to the animated feature.
Unbelievably talented and good.
I saw the Pilot and then decided to read the webtoon! Both are fantastic and I can’t wait to see what else is coming
I’ve seen the jazz cat dance loop once and fell in love but had no idea that an animation was in the works or a web comic. Now I’ve watched it about 10 times and am reading the web comic!
Already watched it and loved every moment of it!
🤞Hope we get to the second episode soon.🤞
Already did, and it is STELLAR AND BEAUTIFUL 🎉🎉❤
I went to watch LACKADAISY because of this video and I instantly became a fan! I honestly believe that indie animation is carrying modern animation and I can't wait to see more.
I visited the Lackadaisy site not too long ago, and I had a lot of fun.
Sounds so cool, thanks for sharing
I've been following the comic and the project for YEARS and I am ababsolutely stoked about how excited everyone is about it!
I love that he's doing videos on indie animation, I recommend Murder Drones next.
I didn't find out about this project until like 2 years ago(?) and I was so happy when this released. I hope to hell this series can make it.
The music, dude - THE MUSIC!
Dang, Lackadaisy basically caught a lot of youtubers attention from Saberspark, Channel awesome, Johnny 2 Cellos and Spilling the milk
I found Lackadaisy through the pilot, fell in love with it, and found out that there was a comic behind it, and I've been binging it since!
Just went and watched. Gorgeous show. Thanks for recommending!
Seeing this come out after watching the behind the scenes and previews over and over is so satisfying
I am so happy to see the incredible skill o these animators and designers that have a platform...even if not as public as they deserve yet
Never heard of this thanks for covering it. Any interest in talking about a Fox in Space?
Ooh maybe!
If Johnny and Saberspark both recommending this than I should definitely check it out
I love it! I’ve already watched several times ❤
Watch something this golden and perfect, that's full of heart and love, makes you really really mad at companies like Disney who waste everything from gobs of money, time, and talent to push controversial junk, getting into cultural and political fights, and making trashy content, burning there bridges with fans
Love the whole All Dogs go to Heaven/ Sly Cooper feel it has to it. Definitely gonna peep this.
You don’t have to beg I wanted to watch this for a long time. It’s great to see awesome original animation I can only imagine all the hard work that went into this, well worth it.
