Basically he's still loyal to his old boss, and is trying to figure out who killed him and why because somthing about it didn't add up. And he also has two or three sisters, one about Ivy's age so that might be his subconscious telling him NO.
The most logical answer is the reason he didn’t shoot ivy is because ivy is atlas aka mordecai previous late boss goddaughter and well it either he doesn’t shot or kill girl or just have respect still for him aka late atlas he’s previous boss
Comic-reader here: Atlas took Mordecai in and basically raised him. He gave Mordecai a home, a father figure, and a start in the business due to his... unique talents. Atlas was basically his dad. Ivy Pepper is Atlas' Goddaughter. She is basically family to him. Because of his love for Atlas, he will absolutely flinch at killing either Mitzi or Ivy... and they are the _only_ people Mordecai would hesitate at killing. Except maybe Viktor, potentially, since he considers Victor a close friend. If Atlas was still alive, they wouldn't have even been on opposite sides.
He told Victor to quit the underworld business when he joined Marigold, because he didn't want to have to go toe to toe with Victor. And when victor refused to step down Mordecai just shot Victor in the knee cap like god damn
Goddaughter not niece but yeah the point stands. Also didn't Mordecai and Viktor get into an argument and Mordecai broke Viktors knees and that's why Viktor is a bartender now because he's not able to do field work? So not so close friends anymore, but before that yes. I still doubt Mordecai would be able to bring himself to kill Viktor.
@phoney2627 If I remember right, it wasn't an argument that resulted in the violence, but the reason for the argument. Mordecai kneecapped Victor with a pistol _so that he would never have to go up against his best friend professionally._ In a twisted way he was trying to _protect_ Victor... Victor was refusing to retire from the underworld business, and he was leaving for a rival gang, meaning they would, sooner or later, end up facing off. And Mordecai didn't want to ever have to kill Victor. So in typical Mordecai fashion he solved the problem the simplest, easiest, surest, and most logical way. Victor wouldn't willingly retire, so Mordecai made him physically unable to do it and forced him to. If you want proof Mordecai has a heart under his cold, remorseless exterior, remember that he would rather have his best friend hate his guts than have his best friend's lifeblood on his hands.
Mordecai is a very interesting and complicated character. He's a sociopath who began his career at an early age and atlas was almost like a father/mentor to him. While atlas wasn't the kindest boss, especially to Mordecai, he showed Mordecai a new path when he was lost. He respects him even in death. Piper reminded him of the old days and she acts almost like a monument to what lackadaisy was and to destroy that meant to harm Atlas' work
No wonder. I wasn't familiar with the characters because I never read the comic before seeing the pilot episode. Makes sense that he wouldn't want to kill his old friend's goddaughter, it kind of makes his character a lot deeper.
not to mention that Viktor is very protective of Ivy so Mordecai knew that if something were to happen to her because of him, Viktor would find a way to kill him.
@@katylepetsos7512 He also likely considers viktor a (close) friend, so even if he wasn't afraid of being hurt by Viktor, he might be afraid of having to hurt/kill viktor.
So based on the new Lackadaisy short that came out, Mordecai knew Ivy since she was a child; I think when Ivy looked back Mordecai recognized her and just couldn’t bring himself to do it.
I'd read the comics prior to the pilot, but even if I didn't, I would've suspected that Mordecai either recognized Ivy (and had some sort of connection with her from back in the day), he had a conscience about not shooting girls, or she reminded him of someone he knew from way back then (thus getting "sentimental about old times"). Either way, it leaves it open-ended for when the series finally comes out.
Um actually Ivy going to college isn’t a false pretense, it’s just wildly played up. She purposely makes it so that she has to stay in St. Louis (specifically over the summer), but she is actually going to college.
Needless to say. Viktor hates it and actively trys to get rid of any reason she comes up with to stay there. Including scaring off, and even beating off her boyfriends.
For those who haven’t read the comic I’d highly recommend it. The pilot was good, don’t get me wrong, but the comics have so much charm and in my opinion do the characters and their personalities more justice (especially Rocky and Freckle)
He respects Victor and Atlas too much to do it. Whereas he has no qualms with shooting rocky before they got to the quarry, and actually shoots Freckle in the head. She is the only one he refuses to harm.
I was also quite confused with the scene at first, but now I understand a little bit about Lackadaisy's insanely deep lore (pun intended) and all the good stuff.
Cold as Mordecai is, the comics showed he at least cared about his mother and sisters. So he might have qualms about killing young women. Especially ones he's seen grow up, like Ivy.
Only just discovered this yesterday. Such a beautifully done piece of work. I thought the hesitation was something else. I'll be bouncing around looking for clues. Thanks for the insight.
one thing i thought of is that ivy is about the same age as mordecai when he was recruited by atlas so i thought he would have seen a bit of himself in her.
You should do a video on the comic series. Because it's so good and well-written and has so much depth also the background in terms of the characters. How there are more layers to them than what was shown in the Pilot.
He also only had 2 bullets left(2 shot at Rocky and 2 shot at Freckle). So even if he was willing to shoot Ivy he wouldn't because he would only have 1 bullet for either Rocky and Freckle afterwards.
It is because Ivy is Atlas's God-daughter. Mordecai use to work for LAckadaisy and knew Ivy when she was very young so he could not bring himself to kill her.
This might just be me being a bad reader, (which I am lol) but in the comics, Mortacai and Mitzi have a conversation in a car about how he gave her a gun, foreshadowing that Mitzi was the one who killed her husband (Atlas). So, I’m not completely sure about this fact but I was wondering if anyone else notice this to…
He didn't give her a gun. The conversation is basically Mordecai threatening to KILL her and bring Lackadaisy down if She doesn't stop competing with The Marigold and stop double-dealing.
I think Mordecai gave her a gun for a different reason because the newest comic revealed that he doesn't know how Atlas died and now suspects that Asa Sweet may have been involved somehow.
It makes me wonder if Mordecai was one of the cats Viktor was thinking of when he told Ivy (in the comic) that she “shouldn’t be here at all.” I mean, Mordecai was basically his partner yet still was willing to shoot him on his way out the door.
I myself am a Lackadaisy fan and grew a lot of interest in the Lord and characters. Notes aside, before I saw this video I was confused why Mordecai didn't shoot Ivy when he had the chance. I believe he must of known her before, such as having a friendship with her in his past life.
