@Joshua G Sadly true. I'm no animation expert, but I do know studios and animators are constantly looking for, not necessarily shortcuts, but easier and faster ways to create animation so they can animate better, animate more, and reduce the amount of money and work it takes to make animation happen. And animation is HARD. It can take months to get animation like what we see here. Imagine doing that CONSTANTLY. Now, I LOVE the animation we see here, and I think it would be great for a film or maybe a comic art style, but for a cartoon series, not so much. They'd have to really downgrade the animation if this was, say, on TV and had a TV budget, but then it would lose a lot of what makes this cool in the first place.
something ive noticed, people usually criticize the sketch lines you can sometimes see and the final speakeasy scene being ''unfinished'' while i think it just adds to the aesthetic of it being: A: a cartoon from the 1920s B: a dream/daydreaming sequence sketch lines are the best things that can happen to an animation, it just adds to the feel of it being hand drawn by a bunch of talented people.
The sketch lines call back to the better days of animation. Sure, our technology has become more sophisticated, flawless, and easier to look at. But with it are fewer stories to tell. This is a labor of love, not a soulless corporate product, and every sketch line I see reminds me that this is a real story worth telling.
You can rewatch this a dozen times and still find an amazing number of little background details and moments of animation of characters that aren't the main focus of the scene, but the changes in expression, the way EVERYONE MOVES and isn't still in the background is incredible.

If you’ve read the comic, the “Sable” sign for the quarry makes a lot of sense. No spoilers, but it’s brilliant is connected to Wick’s reaction later in the episode.

I love how they got actual cat mannerisms to convey emotions too like the flicking of the tail to show annoyance or excitement, airplane ears, fluffing up, etc…
SAME! I also liked the detail when the lady put her hand on the bartenders arm and it looked like a paw but a second layer was gesturing with fingers like a hand.
The tail poof when they get scared was completely accurate! My cats have scared each other while playing and it looks just like how it's portrayed during the train passing scene in the graveyard.
YESSSS! IIRC the extra expressive range cats have is why Tracy J. Butler chose to make the characters that species in the first place! I also love how at 21:11 if you turn on the captions, you can see "cat trill" followed by "upset cat trill". Very accurate cat behavior! XD
If I recall, creator Tracy Butler chose cats precisely because their personalities and mannerisms felt like a good fit for an underworld of criminals and gangsters in an era when everyone was trying to act classy while rolling around in the mud... just like a cat.

I absolutely love the attention to detail for the firearms here as a big gun nerd. Any other animators take notes when adding guns to animations, have at least one gun obsessed nerd on your team for reference material and you'll be doing great. 8:08/9:01 are great highlights of this: the muzzle smoke, the flying casings, the fire rate, all of it. Chef's kiss.

16:56 WOW. The historical detail is INSANE! For those who don't know, when she says "done in by a scarf", it refers to the death of popular dancer Isadora Duncan who was tragically killed when her long scarf got caught in her car tire. She drove away, and the tightening of the scarf broke her neck. This animation and story is so good. This needs to be a movie.
should sift through the comic if you havent. many pages are just excuses to draw fictional universe-appropriate prohibition-era St Louis with little captions below the page concerning the research she did for it
And more interesting - she was wife of the Sergey Yesenin. And lived in Soviet Union. For those, who don't know about this man - he was famous Russian poet
Another little detail at 12:08 , the M1918 BAR being used as intended, firing from the hip while advancing on foot. Admittedly, it does have far too big a magazine, and was famously bad for sustained fire IRL because of the small box mag, but still, I just love little history tidbits like that in cartoons.
As someone from Missouri who is just now watching this for the first time, y'all got St. Louis (during this time) pretty accurate! Some of it even still holds up, nearly a century later.
Honestly the pilot animation comunity was quite dry from 2021-2022 so it isn’t surprising that a half an hour pilot with this level of qualify drops everyone it watching it.
It's awesome to see that happen, that's for sure. People are making their voices heard without being bound by extremely moronic corporate politics that can cause any project to be cancelled for the stupidest of reasons (~cough~ Netflix ~cough~)
Lmao! I was just going to make that comment, I keep hearing people say their tired of cgi and all that and miss 2d animation and that if they didn't start making it, independent artists would do it themselves......well here we are and it's better quality than what most these big companies are willing to pay for.
Fr, I actually prefer to watch these kind of animations on RUclips way more than watching the crap that is produced on Disney now. It’s weird how these “small” 2d animations are wayy better than the 1 hour movies coming out in Disney right now.
I remember watching this a week after it came out and falling in love. I hadn't even read the webcomics, but I just remember this was a magical experience. And this introduced me to a world of indie animation. Thank you Lackadaisy.
I went into the comments to see if any other dance nerds had noticed the part about Isadora Duncan, and found an unexpected friend. insert Gimli and Legolas meme with dance and history buffs, respectively.
Exactly. Tracy has been working hard for *17 years* to get to this point and it really shows the hard work it takes, and that you don't stop doing things after you're 20 😅
Lackadaisy alongside Tamberlane are my favorite online webcomics. I've been dreaming on seeing Lackadaisy get adapted into animation since Middle School. Hope the Tamberlane webcomics gets similar treatment in the future, because the art style is beautifully drawn and the characters are very likeable.

It's Rocky's violin. His--ambience--has drastically affected it. It now has all his insanity, insouciance, and absolute ability to take a licking and keep on ticking!
As funny and absurd as Rocky is, he’s debatably the most tragic character of the cast. Almost every character has gone through some tragedy, but they all can do something Rocky can’t, leave with something to fall back onto and that’s what makes it so depressing . Whether it’s because of their skills or their charm every character can have a “normal” life. Rocky’s a dysfunctional, mentally ill, socially inept 23 year old who has no family to come crawling back to, money to soften the fall or skills in demand. He fights so hard to keep his place, and while many of the bad things that happen can be traced back to his decisions, much more is directed at him unfairly. Victor punching him, and generally being neglected (with the notable exception of Mitzi Zib and Ivy) and mocked are more often than not a result of actions by Rocky that were out of his control. As someone who grow up mental illness I’ve seen what happens to people left untreated, they end up like Rocky, dysfunctional and hated. All of this makes Rocky such a wonderful but tragic character, I hope that one day he’ll find some inner peace and happiness (if Tracy and Fable allow it that is I certainly hope they do).
@@leehoohn1379that’s so sweet! It really wouldn’t be that hard. I’ve seen way worse, I’ve been way worse. He needs therapy, stability and a loving environment and that woukd be a great start.

. Rocky is certainly dysfunctional and suffers from mental issues but he’s ultimately not that bad. I was way worse than Rocky, he just needs someone to come along and provide him with stability and affection. It’s just the environment he’s in and his own insecurities get in the way. This is so unreal, to think as a young amateur artist I recall seeing Lackadaisy artwork on Deviant Art over 10+ years ago, and now an animated pilot of it all the same. How incredible!
Rocky, Ivy, and Freckle are such an iconic trio to me, but funnily enough, this isn't the first time I've seen them. I only learned of Lackadaisy last year through some old ProZD voiceovers and devoured the entire comic immediately afterward. I can't express my excitement.
I remember when I first came across it something like a decade ago, I spent three days just... Absolutely beingeing it nary getting a wink of sleep. 100% worth it. Haven't touched it much since. Might be time to binge again and catch up as I love to do with my comics and anime. : )
I learned of it when they started making the movie (I watch a lot of indie animation and aspiring animators) and spent literally the next 3 years or so procrastinating reading it. Finally binge read it over the course of like 3 days when the trailer came out and I realized "Oh shit they made a movie in the time it took me to....read the free comic on my phone"
I love the small attention to period-accurate detail. The hairstyles, the rumrunners, and the fact that rocky is slightly unhinged and crazy due to the mercury used in his hat.
Watching this for a third time and every time cannot get over how rocky’s poem about the Mississippi river is an ORIGINAL POEM by tracey j butler. The talent that went into every aspect of the comic and this pilot is so incredible

The animation, the dialogue, the story, the voice actors are amazing 🤌✨ This deserves soooo much more attention! Can’t wait for the 1st season episodes to drop!
I love the intro poem, especially how it shows how the world looks through Rocky's eyes. The sparkles, the golden bridge, the curly plants and the sky full of stars, as unstable as Rocky is, he has a wonderful way of seeing the world.
Video incoming with thoughts on it perhaps? Self-published animated shows seem to becoming more commonplace on youtube and the quality of lackadaisy is jawdropping!

Man, they fucking NAILED the 1920's art deco/prohibition-era feel. The fancy theatric voices, the language, the color palettes, its all so beautiful. I personally love Mordecai's focus scenes. The clock ticking, the aspect ratio shrinking, its so fluid and cool. Sensational. I want to see so much more. Edit: THE MUSIC?? OH MY GOD
I also liked some of the referenced historic events (like Miss M reading about the death of Isadora Duncan, which happened in September of 1927) and the weapons they used like Mordecai’s Colt 1911, the M1928 Thompson and later Colt 1908 Vest Pocket used by Freckle, and of course that sexy sawed-off M1918 B.A.R. used by the one Cajun cat who’s name I forget. The decade long dedication Tracy Butler gave to Lackadaisy and the years long effort her and her team made cannot be described. I hope this pilot gets picked up so Trace and her team can continue developing their vision through phenomenal animation
I hope it's not from a major studio. You know how they like to 'meddle' and end up ruining things. Maybe "Dreamworks"... they DID just do a phenomenal job with "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish". But that might just have been a fluke. The execs might have been too drunk to pay attention to how much actual talent and effort was being utilized. ;D

something ive noticed, people usually criticize the sketch lines you can sometimes see and the final speakeasy scene being ''unfinished'' while i think it just adds to the aesthetic of it being:
A: a cartoon from the 1920s
B: a dream/daydreaming sequence
sketch lines are the best things that can happen to an animation, it just adds to the feel of it being hand drawn by a bunch of talented people.
I dislike the distraction they create but love the aesthetic despite that. So, I'm split but overall in favor of them
This comment is underrated.
@@mitchramey5052 I don't mind it much
The sketch lines call back to the better days of animation. Sure, our technology has become more sophisticated, flawless, and easier to look at. But with it are fewer stories to tell. This is a labor of love, not a soulless corporate product, and every sketch line I see reminds me that this is a real story worth telling.

I can fix him

. Rocky is certainly dysfunctional and suffers from mental issues but he’s ultimately not that bad. I was way worse than Rocky, he just needs someone to come along and provide him with stability and affection. It’s just the environment he’s in and his own insecurities get in the way. He’s not unfixable. He definitely wouldn’t be sent an asylum because he’s not insane, he’d be sent to prison if he was caught. I think a lot of people vastly overestimate how sick he is. He just needs some love
@@ek5310 Asylum use was very liberal at the time, so people who had even slight psychotic breaks like he did with the dynamite would warrant him to be sent to one. I just read the comic and my personality is a combination between Modaci and Rocky.
no joke it's a good poem about the Mississippi river. A certain Samuel Clemens would be proud.
Also Rocky: *I M B I B E*
I love how the reflection of the moon on the water is shaped like a cat.
This was AMAZING!!! Absolutely unreal job on this!
Haha if the Nostalgia Critic himself loves it, you know it must be amazing!
Didn't expect to see Doug Walker in here.
Wow! Never thought I’d see you here!
Video incoming with thoughts on it perhaps? Self-published animated shows seem to becoming more commonplace on youtube and the quality of lackadaisy is jawdropping!
Cool seeing you here, Doug!
These Disney animators don't stand a chance against RUclips animations
I know Mordecai may seem like a mood but he's the only person to take his job seriously. Even while Nico and Serafine are having a blast.
Regular show Mordecai thinks otherwise
PUNS
Rocky going insane the second he gets access to explosives is a mood
He's a professional. Professional's have standards.

The fact that this came from a comic in the 2010s that i ACTUALLY READ makes me over joyed. Its like seeing something you wish you had more of, get more!
Is it based on it or a full animated series?

This pilot has singlehandedly rejuvenated my passion for hand-drawn animation. I really hope it gets enough support for the full show to be produced!
I'd sort of put this up there with Vivzie's work. Heck, it reminds me of her Die Young music video.
TBH id hope they dont get snatched up by a company but instead get funding to make it so we can still view it. Like the other commenter said about VivsiePop. I was damn invested in Hazbin, but once it got took by a company, im still not able to watch it anymore because it isn't on youtube TwT
This definitely gonna rival viv now haha
@Chimmichurri How can you not watch it.? It isn't out. Do you not have TV? I'm sure people will be uploading the episodes places once they start airing!
@@chimmichurri6940 probably because hazbin hotel isn’t out yet you dummy, it comes out in summer
I became a fan on New Years Eve. I must help spread the word. This show deserves to be seen.
All very common bootlegger and outlaw weapons of the prohibition era (the BAR in particular was in a very similar configuration as one used by Bonnie and Clyde)
There’s no furry in 1920s

@@buzzytrains9037 Diesel/gasoline, not steam. Still clutch-and-cable and period-correct, but not steam. They even have the electronic start controls in the cab and it makes a nice rumble rather than the chuff and wheeze of steam.

It would reach even more viewers of other backgrounds if we later see subtitles for some characters with realistic accents. from watching the isle of dogs by Wes Anderson. I don't know why but Rocky was singing a Irish pub song called "Whiskey in a Jar" it is pretty charming coming from bootlegers.
I love how Freckles goes from a shy quiet soul to a psychotic maniac once he gets his hands on the Tommy.
A Chicago typewriter does that to you I guess.
Lesson one children, don’t give Freckles the Tommy.
Orange cat being an orange cat
I love the detail on the Tommy gun here's a few details I noticed.
1. The bull horn sight/handle for the bolt
2. The muzzle break, the fanned barrel and the smoke coming from the muzzle shooting in the right directions
3. You can even see place where the stock is attached to the body
4. The casings ejecting and then bouncing off the magazine and rifle body
Also the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) feels like it has actual recoil. It also switches between firing firing full auto and semi auto.
Nah but fr I love how crazy freckles goes lol
This is so cute. The art, design, voices and everything. I really missed quality animation like this. 🥰
The execs might have been too drunk to pay attention to how much actual talent and effort was being utilized. ;D
@@Alondro77 I doubt dreamworks would do it they’re not known for doing adult shows and I doubt they would pick one from RUclips anyway.

We should take a moment to appreciate Tracy's portrayal and extensive knowledge of the 1920s. It's an era that's often generalized/idealized, but Tracy's dedication to historical accuracy, from specific historical events and technology to the characters' clothing and vocabulary, makes the world of Lackadaisy feel all the more authentic and captivating.
Show the world as it was, rather than the idealized romanticized version of it
The location of the radiator hose was not accurate, but for a two second scene it’s pretty passable
@Sunfishen Sunfishen I bet you complained about the pipes in Titanic and the night sky in that movie too
Actually I’ve never seen it. I’m just a car enthusiast
@@sunfishensunfishen2271 If you’re going to be nitpicky, the M1928 Thompson submachine gun should be a larger stick out (to any gun nut, for obvious reasons) but Being as it’s a work of fiction and we quite literally have nothing else like it, I’d say virtually anything would be “passable”.
(If you’re curious, the M1921AC didn’t have the large compensator at the front. The model used in the video has a cuts compensator, making it the M1928A1).
Rocky is the most unexpected guy ever he can be playing violin, and then he can be tossing dynamite

Hold on for a moment. There can only be a possible series of Lackadaisy if it reaches the optimal amount of views. I bet it needs over 10 million views, for a series to be possible.
I just realized how they kept "cat zoomies" alive in the characters as they just make impulsive decisions tail twitching and fidgeting and all with adrenaline
I think Rocky is the very definition of "cat zoomies"
People say that they should’ve included more music in but I have to disagree. That’s where the beauty of it comes in. We get to see these characters be without any interruptions
And it plays the magic when it wants to
Rocky is a such a chaotic little theater kid and I love him! Also freckle being so nervous and containing so much chaotic feral energy is wonderful

Rocky my beloved.
The prohibition era lends itself to so many good stories, I’m glad we have a series using it!
God always finds their way in the underground and it’s a beautiful flower they bloom
After the "Horrors of Crime City" and "Galante" skinlines appeared in League of Legends, I wondered if, during Prohibition, there were such people with abilities beyond human comprehension and running their games against the backdrop of normal Mafia families.
Actually within several years of Prohibition came the Great Depression and then World War II the deadliest war in history. The kids who were born in the 1920s were the soldiers of that conflict and their called the Greatest Generation
I love this. As a fiddler, I’m glad they took the time to make Rocky’s fingers and bow move appropriately. It’s nice to see.
Whoa! That some attention to detail!
Same! I also play violin, so when people animate it right it makes me happy

Rock is now my spirit animal. Poetry, madness, chaos and an eagerness to prove and provide all wrapped up into one unhinged bundle. Also, can we just take the time to appreciate the animation, because WOW! So smooth, so detailed and articulated! It must've taken the team forever!!!! And it looks as good as anything from any major studio if not better! And the music!!! Oh, the MUSIC!

Keeping the faded base Artline on each character made this pilot a unique art piece!
According to their Twitter, they added those back in later because they wanted to make it look more like "moving pictures" rather than modern perfect looking animation. I love the choice, it gets the job done excellently.

@@gunjfur8633 I mean it is more similar to classic works brought into modern light rather than modern stories in the silhouetted style of classic works. Basically, they’re not trying to make the 1920s equal to “today, but with less technology” it’s very genuine to the actual culture at that time.

My absolute favorite thing about this is how they aren't humans shaped like cats, but cats shaped like humans.
