2. The muzzle break, the fanned barrel and the smoke coming from the muzzle shooting in the right directions
3. You can even see place where the stock is attached to the body
4. The casings ejecting and then bouncing off the magazine and rifle body
Also the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) feels like it has actual recoil. It also switches between firing firing full auto and semi auto.
Nah but fr I love how crazy freckles goes lol
Since Disney is lacking on hand draw 2d animation, the people are making it themselves!! This is what we want!
I hope your cat is doing well
It's awesome to see that happen, that's for sure. People are making their voices heard without being bound by extremely moronic corporate politics that can cause any project to be cancelled for the stupidest of reasons (~cough~ Netflix ~cough~)
Lmao! I was just going to make that comment, I keep hearing people say their tired of cgi and all that and miss 2d animation and that if they didn't start making it, independent artists would do it themselves......well here we are and it's better quality than what most these big companies are willing to pay for.
May my friend rest in peace because of cancer he couldn't breath anymore in the hospital, me and my friend binge watched this pilot together before he died today and we loved it so much. I will always love this pilot in memory of him. Thank you, Lackadaisy.

Hand drawn animation should never go out of style, and this is proof of exactly why.
yess! it's so special honestly
Animation companies these days could learn a lot from this.
@Frogger what cha mean by that?
@Frogger hand drawn art is significantly more expensive than 3D animation
3D animation its much easier to just reuse the same assets in the same circumstances compared to 2D and since colouring lighting and background don't need to be redrawn every time there is a change makes 3D animations much much cheaper than 2D
next these guys where not forced to used 2D animation they strictly chose to as it does look better and is more expressive
for reference per min of 3D animation it can cost between $1000 to $10 000
but 2D animation can cost between $7000 to $20 000 per min
and thats without the luxury that the cost goes down after the first episode with 3D animation as they dont need to recreate main characters or main areas again and can just render the new scene
BTW this pilot made 124k in the first hour on Kickstarter
@Joshua G Sadly true. I'm no animation expert, but I do know studios and animators are constantly looking for, not necessarily shortcuts, but easier and faster ways to create animation so they can animate better, animate more, and reduce the amount of money and work it takes to make animation happen. And animation is HARD. It can take months to get animation like what we see here. Imagine doing that CONSTANTLY.
Now, I LOVE the animation we see here, and I think it would be great for a film or maybe a comic art style, but for a cartoon series, not so much. They'd have to really downgrade the animation if this was, say, on TV and had a TV budget, but then it would lose a lot of what makes this cool in the first place.
Disney is dead now.

This will seem like a very oddly specific thing to focus on, but the way Serafine is using the BAR as it was originally intended, “walking fire” with the proper sling and all, is a very nice touch.
The BAR and Thompson were of course used in WWII but also the Korean War in the 1950s, In fact some US soldiers and marines still had Tommy Guns in their arsenal until the M3 Grease Gun took it's role
Came back to this again and noticed that today.
@@CrossOfBayonne Wasn't the greaser introduced during WWII? I seem to remember it being known for being one of the cheapest wartime designs.
@dingoatemybaby9739 Yes, The M3 Grease Gun was introduced because Thompson was an expensive weapon to make during WW2, The British did the same with their lend lease Tommy Guns mid war with the Sten which was a 9mm submachine gun but was prone to jamming and was not generally reliable

The use of a stopwatch sound to represent Mordecai’s intense focus is a beautiful artistic answer to the more common heartbeat sound effect.

It also ties into his existing motifs from the comic of gears and clocks.

something ive noticed, people usually criticize the sketch lines you can sometimes see and the final speakeasy scene being ''unfinished'' while i think it just adds to the aesthetic of it being:
A: a cartoon from the 1920s
B: a dream/daydreaming sequence
sketch lines are the best things that can happen to an animation, it just adds to the feel of it being hand drawn by a bunch of talented people.
I dislike the distraction they create but love the aesthetic despite that. So, I'm split but overall in favor of them
This comment is underrated.
@@mitchramey5052 I don't mind it much
The sketch lines call back to the better days of animation. Sure, our technology has become more sophisticated, flawless, and easier to look at. But with it are fewer stories to tell. The amount of times Rocky gets hit in the head in this and in the comics really explained why he is the way he is.
And he gets hit a lot. He spends as much time knocked out as he does walking.
Oh my goodness you might be right
What comics?
Lackadaisy started as a comics! But now they’re making it into a series for yt! Hope that helped explain
@@PLVZKEIIKOO Thx. Webcomics or paper comics?
I am absolutely in love with this. It totally lacks the “modern twist” most shows are obsessed with these days, and that’s what makes it perfect. That, combined with the lively animation, excellent character design, and absolutely PERFECT characterization. I cannot explain how happy this thirty minute animation just made me.
Wait until season one comes out. :3 It will likely be released early next year.
@@Myu_Tube I am excited.
i totally agree!! this was straight up amazing. i can’t wait for the first episode‼️
What "modern twists" are you refering to?
@@gunjfur8633 I mean it is more similar to classic works brought into modern light rather than modern stories in the silhouetted style of classic works. Basically, they’re not trying to make the 1920s equal to “today, but with less technology” it’s very genuine to the actual culture at that time.
this is my favorite indie animation EVER. the way you guys managed to create half and hour of pristine, consistent, high-quality animation with amazing writing, voice acting, and choreo??????? you're an endless inspiration. it reminds me somewhat of who framed roger rabbit, and that's saying something bc that's one of my fave animated movies period
after almost 1 year, this is still one of the best animated pilots out there...
Cats, prohibition-era, guns, epic animation, great voice acting, and electro swing. This checks so many boxes, it's almost unreal.
Exactly!
Right? Mordecai and Atlas inspired two characters of my own in a, story I'm still not writing 😂
I love the premise, but - in my opinion - it seems like this film lacks direction. That said, this is just a pilot, so it's fine and all things considered still very impressive.
EDIT: I read comic now.
@@Vulpilux The comics have a bit more going on lol. This is just a random side event that isn't directly related.
@@Vulpilux have you not read the comic?
I know Mordecai may seem like a mood but he's the only person to take his job seriously. Even while Nico and Serafine are having a blast.
Regular show Mordecai thinks otherwise

Rocky going insane the second he gets access to explosives is a mood
He's a professional. Professional's have standards.

I was wondering why I liked that grey cats voice... Michael Kovach is amazing!
13:56 when rocky starts going "insane" it sends a chill down my spine
You can really see the difference between a product made by a company and a project made by people.
and to be fair the animation and story for this one is better than most companies art
must be why the lackdaisy property has a copyright notice
Yeah, companies do a better work
@@X-3181 Do they though?
I love all the voices and animations for this so much
Freckle going from a sweet yet anxious guy to going absolutely manic when getting a gun is the best. He’s my absolute favorite now.
Fr bro
He's always been my fav, albeit kinda sad for certain reasons, you'll know from the webcomic.
Agreed!
Same-
His psychology is what interests me, in addition to his storytelling potential.
I have the inkling that he could be a heartbreaking tragedy.
50 seconds in. A CAT in a ZOOT SUIT!! 🤯 Brought a tear to my eye. I'm hooked already!
Freckle doing a small prayer when they open the box💀
Rocky: Irresponsible older brother
Ivy: Smart little sister
Freckle: Forgotten middle child

Just for those whom don’t know, liquor of any sort was illegal in the 1920’s

Best animated pilot on RUclips! Even better than Hazbin hotel!
Tbh this had a lot more people working on it than hazbin’s pilot did
Who else is re-watching the pilot on the one-year anniversary?
Yup
This animation is beautiful, and as a violinist myself, they actually paid attention to how the bow and fingers move for what notes. Kudos. Most live action films can't even manage that.
You have passion, my friend. Super observant you are
Big films don't have time to worry about details only a tiny amount of people notice, is why they don't manage it
@@BoltBarkingatthemoon they do though..especially big blockbusters...they have the money thus they have time. They just want more of the money so they won't spend that time
@@FOXY_SPHYNX Im so sad Starship Goldfish

It's 1927. Prohibition is in full effect. During the first half of the episode we have six characters, all sober, but half of them acting so crazy like they took something stronger than alcohol.
Cat nip!
It's confirmed in the comic that Rocky drinks magic cactus tea, so all those art-deco patterns in the beginning is just Rocky tripping balls lol.
Considering it's the 1920's they very much could be
@@FokoPoko991 sounds like sokka in the desert episode
YOU HAVE!!
Freckle: a timid and quite guy that goes full bat shit insane when he is handed a gun and cares about his partners.
Ivy: freckle but has more courage at points
and finally rocky, the eccentric, violin playing, explosives enthusiast, but he's just eccentric and sometimes looks like he is on the brink of collecting all the fire and TNT in the world and just blowing it up to cook a batch of smores.
been watching the development for nearly 10 years now, so lovely to see what it's become! Hope to see more! I've shared with my friends
How the heck did I miss this until now?! I love it! The characters are so funny, the voice acting and music are incredible, and the animation- just wow. Definitely will be telling all my friends & family about Lackadaisy :D
I love how they got actual cat mannerisms to convey emotions too like the flicking of the tail to show annoyance or excitement, airplane ears, fluffing up, etc…
SAME! I also liked the detail when the lady put her hand on the bartenders arm and it looked like a paw but a second layer was gesturing with fingers like a hand.
Omg this is my favorite part too!! I love their flicky movements. This is just too cute
The tail poof when they get scared was completely accurate! My cats have scared each other while playing and it looks just like how it's portrayed during the train passing scene in the graveyard.
Except they can’t see in the dark? 😔
YESSSS! IIRC the extra expressive range cats have is why Tracy J. Butler chose to make the characters that species in the first place! I also love how at 21:11 if you turn on the captions, you can see "cat trill" followed by "upset cat trill". Very accurate cat behavior! XD
One thing that makes my inner history buff happy is the level of historical accuracy for the costumes, hairstyles, and settings.

And cars

A year later and I'm still blown away by the sound design in this pilot. Absolutely incredible job!
Absolutely stunning this is...
I find myself coming back to this almost every time when nothing else on RUclips is doing it for me, creative inspiration, or absolutely incredible background noise, (that I usually find myself getting rightfully distracted by.) There's nothing not to love about this. A grand well done to everyone.
Dude, if this gets picked up, this could be one of the greatest adult animated shows ever, given that it gets picked up by the right people!
Who do you think will mostly be picked up by?
Hard to say, animation as a industry is hurting right now
@@ghostpatgaming2314 if Hazbin Hotel ends up doing well I would expect A24 Studios to pick it up.
@@ghostpatgaming2314 honestly I think Disney plus could pick it up as an adult animated series they have a lot of the adult marvel movies/shows such as Deadpool and punisher so anything could happen. HBO max and Netflix would be a death sentence if you know you know
The only streaming service besides Disney plus I see the show being successful on is probably amazon

Can't they also use their claws to fight if they are cats?

23:04 Freckle’s “I hAvE a hEaD inJurY” is perfect
Why don't they just let these people make modern cartoons. This looks so good, this needs the be at least 2 seasons and on tv.
Because making something good takes desires for more than just money.
There is danger in trying to get your ideas onto a network or with a larger company, since you're handing them the rights to your work.
Olan Rogers lost the rights to his OWN cartoon series (Final Space). It was his idea, his story, his animations, and he couldn't even touch it until recently. (Took him 2 years of fighting to even get the little bit of ground that he has now).
well for most animated tv shows the quality tends to take a dive thanks to tight production deadlines that causes script writers and animators to crunch which hurts both their health and the show. for lackadaisy, this one short pilot took years to make and you can really tell that everyone who worked on it took the time to polish it into a masterpiece. basically shows of this caliber tend to not be very compatible with big studio schedules which cares more about quantity over quality.
To be honest, I wouldn't wanna have any of my ideas given to a big TV network. They always ruin it by watering it down or making it have some sort of political correctness. I'd rather just upload any animation ideas I have onto RUclips, where money hungry production companies can only watch my success from the sidelines.

I love the small attention to period-accurate detail. The hairstyles, the rumrunners, and the fact that rocky is slightly unhinged and crazy due to the mercury used in his hat.

I love how catlike they made them, the tail twitches, mrrs, growls, the widening of pupils is so good.
