@@JSpin-js4vr That "SODA MACHINE" line and the comment about soda being really bad for you came while I was taking a sip of my diet coke. I had to pause and take a second to reflect on my life choices before continuing the video.
Even though it's a video I still get a strong sense of satisfaction when I see the loading screen just briefly. "Oh wow! Fast loading times in this!" ...is what my mind says.
That was so charming! I am so happy to finally see you make a cartoon!! I remember your character from long long ago and finally seen something original from you warms my heart!!!! hope you can keep making this cartoon TM!!!!!
I think it's because they seem from different eras of games, karoto has a dice so apparently a TTRPG style, so he wouldn't be used to pop-up stats and level ups like that
Having a little blue fella with a telekinesis staff and a carrot man with music powers determined by dice rolls fight a giant dog made of lighting in a floating grandma’s cottage is the kind of out-there stuff you can only get in animation and I love it. Thanks for all the hard work man.
It feels exactly like the sort of bonkers nonsense you would get in PS1 era RPGs. It's fantastic! Also, really glad I'm not the only one to look at the bard and think "that's a carrot."
I like how despite the fact this is a world of sentient vegetable people, Grandma is still just a regular old lady with regular vegetables in her fridge
I cannot express how much I fucking love the way the dialogue is expressed through timed text. The delay is not too long, but always gives plenty of time to read. But more importantly, it gives it a comic book feel, which is crazy, because it feels like I'm WATCHING a comic book. I dont if its a weird thing to fall in love with, but it definitely captured my attention insanely well, which is great. Good job, dude, I dont know how many people were involved in this, but every single one of them should be proud.
It uses the garbledygook of the likes of Banjo-Kazooie, but the pauses are definitely along the lines of a disk based game needing to load audio. This is evocative of sooooo many different nostalgic things, it tickles the nerdy brain in so many good ways
I love the idea of Nabiu being a sort of "videogame protaganist" whilst having the traits of an absolute side character Not only is Nabiu incredibly crafty but she seems to make up in a lack of fighting experience with just crafty usage of whatever is at her disposal.
Nabiu is a videogame protagonist and Caroto is a board game protagonist ( like d&d ) That’s why he’s confused when he sees the videogame text, and he uses a dice to elevate his power.
And since the series is focused on Nabiu, everything else is video-game themed; textboxes, loading screens, music, quick time events, and the leveling of course. Amazing/
The design of Hour clock woods is so beautiful. Even the layout of the environment makes it a clear love letter to early level rpg forests with the winding yet rectangular paths, it’s adorable
A retro RPG-inspired series about a little blue mage with a telekinetic staff, and a carrot man bard with a Magic-Powered instrument controlled by dice, on a quest to find a teleporting armchair, just has that signature charm and wackiness that only someone like TerminalMontage can cook up. I really hope this thing takes off as a series.
I'm loving the subtle sound design detail: The blips for speaking aren't just random, they closely follow the words being spoken down to the syllables! It's especially obvious when Wizzro and Nabiu talk about the chair's trigger word.
I love how when the lycan is in the grandma whenever it talks it sounds like it’s cycling through the voice lines that a grandma would say instead of saying something else
Honestly love that Captain Broccoli was polite and respectful to Grandma. Makes me really hopeful for a good antagonist, or whatever role the Captain will have
Seems like it might have been inspired by NIghtmare from Kirby's Adventure? But the specific phrase "the stars were its cape" might be a reference to something else as well, it sounds so familiar.
Probably a reference to Joseph in the bible. Genesis 37:9 NIV Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
I'm getting an idea for the future where Karoto comes to care for Nabiu but doesn't realize it, until he sees his Deceitfulness score go DOWN when he levels up and he's like "no no no no wait"
I honestly don't mind. He already protects Grandma and Nabiu in the pilot, so he's not a completely selfish guy from the start. Nice to see a rogue with some depth.
This was insanely good. I went in kind of not expecting much, a lot of parody creators who go do their own thing tend to forget what makes their stuff magical. But you absolutely doubled down on what makes your work uniquely yours, you wear your love for the genres that inspire you on your sleeve, and it just came out incredibly cool. I'm ridiculously invested now.
Thank you everyone for being here! This was a labor of love by a very small team (4 people). The original music is by www.youtube.com/@MyNewSoundtrack and will be uploaded to his channel after the premiere!
I love how the expectation of tropes is messed with multiple times. Going to grandma’s house only to find out that it’s creepy. Assuming the creepiness is normal only to realize Nabiu just completely looked over something obvious and dangerous. It kept the story from being predictable while adding that TerminalMontage’s signature flair we love. I love everything about this and can’t wait to see where the story goes!
oh found it. At the end of subspace parody when luigi goes to basement and there are many notes on his theories on the zoom out scene showing it all there is one sticky note on the floor saying something about vegetables on an adventures and a few drawings one of which is clearly a carrot
My favorite thing in this was how "Show don't tell" it was. For example, Karoto's instrument starts out as a flute, then he gets a great roll and it becomes an electric guitar, and then it seemingly defaults to an acoustic guitar afterwards. This insinuates that he rolled bad against the guards initially, and got stuck with a dinky flute, probably why he is constantly checking on the die's cooldown in the prologue. I really like it when Rouge/Outlaw characters rely on luck, especially the way Karoto does. There are a lot of creative and fun situations you can take that in, like Karoto making the best out of being stuck with cymbals in the Lycan fight. Keep up the good work!!! This is one of my favorite projects you have done. Nabiu is absolutely adorable.
A really cool "show don't tell" moment I noticed was with the echo rod vs the lycan. No words are needed to effectively communicate "oh, it isn't made of matter, so the echo rod won't work on it" and then you get to experience that lightbulb moment along with nabiu when she realizes it's possessing matter!
I don’t think a flute would come from a bad roll, especially since a 2 equates to a simple pair of cymbals. Also, the flute was normal when the video started, implying it ran out of mana, while the cymbals lasted the whole Leyline Lycan fight and the electric guitar only lasted for a few seconds. I’d say the flute would be more of a 3 or 4, while a 1 could be something even worse than cymbals, like a triangle or a thingamajig
Nabiu helping a carrot and there's a kingdom of broccoli, No wonder it's called the Fruitless Quests of Nabiu. Jokes aside, loved this and how much it feels like a homage to fantasy games and the timer for text boxes is the best design for something like that
I just gotta say, the creativity here is insane, I love how she flung up the tree and it ends up being useful. A lot of the time in cartoons, silly things happen just to be silly, and they have overall no effect on the plot or move the story forward. So I really liked that detail
I ADORE how this acts like a fake video game, I also adore that the loading bar and the character running animation on said loading bar stagger a bit I just LOVE the detail!
I’m really hoping TM’s team will surprise us with a full game when the series (or at least season 1) ends. At the very least, surely some talented, dedicated fans will make a solid fan game from it??
Even the Name of the Series is gold. In a world full of anthromorphic VEGETABLES of course the quest is "Fruitless" . Holy cow. No notes. From sound design to story telling, this is a homerun. I anxiously look forward to more
This is incredibly fun!!! The Leyline Lycan is both a good name and it had such a cool design and set of powers! The whole battle flowed so well and the way the Leyline Lycan's properties were revealed and then used for and against it was great. Like the way it being out of an object left it vulnerable to sound-waves, but being in objects made it vulnerable to the Echo Rod! The whole sequence did such a good job at being engaging to follow AND seeming like it'd be a cool video game battle with follow-able mechanics. Not even to mention how fun the environment of Grandma's floating house was! This whole episode was so great but I don't have time to ramble about all of it. Thanks for making it!!
On my third rewatch, I’ve really grown to appreciate how clearly defined the Lycan’s weaknesses are. The size of the rupture shrinking is like a progress meter, with Nabiu and Karo respectively only being able to defend against it depending on which of the two states it’s in. Amazing stuff!
Even the Lycan appears to figure this out and adapt. When it is in its normal state, it seems to be aiming for Niabu more, and when possessing furniture it turns its focus on Caroto
This checks ALL of my favorite story tropes! - Companion with ulterior motives - Wholesome protagonist with inspiring kindness - Unique and thoughtful worldbuilding - Tasteful, timely humor - rising stakes leading to a foreshadowed climax (Brocolli really is evil!) This has great potential. To call Jeremy talented alone would be a disservice; he is hardworking, diligent and earnestly passionate. God bless!
This had me laughing and cheering like a small child, to the point that I don't have the language skills to express how absolutely wonderful it was to watch this. It feels like the pinnacle expression of all the culture surrounding the works you've made up to this point. Just amazing beyond words. Can't wait to see where this adventure is going!
0:11 I just realized that Karoto was holding a flute when he was escaping, implying that he probably rolled a one trying to fight the guards. I'm also excited if we ever get to see more carrot-like people (or broccoli)
I saw that too. So it got me thinking, the dice side we see is a 3. So maybe the 3 is the flute, two is rhe symbols and 1 is ??? Because with a flute you can at least play different notes, and ptiches. With a symbol you can really only go loud or soft. So 1 might be a single note/pitch instrument.
@@hakai1014 given he was being chased. I would wager he must have. But it wasn't effective with so many guards. Maybe the flute works best for small groups.
Going back to this video again and I just realized, while Karo is deceiving Nabiu those few lies wouldn't really seem like enough to get a +90 in his stats. Then it hit me that a good chunk of that boost must have come from the start of the episode where Karo deceived all of the guards by 'vanishing' off the roof top until he was in the clear to book it. After all he didn't level up until then. God the amount of detail in this pilot is amazing, I wanna see so much more from these characters
A bizarre and nonsensical fantasy world that you have full control of filled with quirky oddities? A party of a pure hearted mage girl doing her best alongside a skeevy trickster bard with a dubiously criminal past? The classic RPG overlay, music and tone to match your usual chaotic energy of your Something About series? Oh yeah, we got an absolute banger in the making. Here's hoping this pilot pops off so we can get more
Oh man, I've _so_ missed this kind of fantastical creative whimsy; something I haven't seen since the Mother series. I love this, so much! Please continue this, it's such an awesome piece of art that you've created, and a breath of fresh air with it's creativity!
please don't be discouraged by Nabiu having less views than your fandom works! its incredible fun, and incredibly done! the rpg mechanics, character design, Nabiu's active reaserch, the physical comedy of hiding the stat page, the unique text babble for ever character and the Haunting for voice acting being used to show something intrinsically wrong, all of it is just so much fun. i want to see more of this series. you and your team are starting something wonderful and exciting and i hope there will be more, no matter how long the wait.
The cynic in me thinks that this will be another Monkey Wrench situation where a cartoon with soul, heart, and charm is overshadowed because it doesn't get 1 million views within 6 hours.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the 20-minute runtime makes it less appealing than the shorter-format videos that are a norm for this channel. Then again, the 20-minute Smash Bros video has 30 million views, so that couldn't possibly be true! Right...? Sometimes the original works just don't get the same viewership because there isn't an existing fandom to draw from like the other videos do.
Rewatching this made me finally realize the absolute sick detail at 0:18 The dice is still on cool down for 36 seconds, and actually takes that amount of time in video for it to be ready. Insane attention to detail, Jeremy is truly built different
The Leyline Lychan is such a cool design for a monster, love how the animatorss used it's electricity based form as an excuse to do all sorts of crazy expressions and poses. I also love the little lore tidbits in the credits
@@alexanderdavis6754 Leylines exist in many different settings and even some real world folklore. They are usually something akin to magic energy veins in the earth
I love the fact that while some characters are clearly more pure than others, both Karoto and the Knight in the post credits scene have a sense of ambiguity around them, they both have a sense they are not what they seem, but they still have manners and keep up appearances.
@emmaroni lol, I mean it makes more sense than my thought of them just being brocoli in Armour but then again this is terminalmontage with no limitations soooo
@@itz_paetzaI mean the two are helping citizens of Broccoli Kingdom based on the description and it would match the theme of produce (Nabiu being a blueberry and Karoto being a carrot) so the knights are probably broccoli
I haven't seen anyone else mention this, so can we talk about how awesome it is that there's a timer bar for longer dialogue? As someone who sometimes struggles to read quickly, having that timer to know how long the text will be one screen, when to pause, etc., is such an amazing & underutilized accessibility feature that I have seen nowhere else! This show is amazing for so many reasons, and I'm really looking forward to watching the rest!
It's also something I really appreciate! Even though I'm a fairly fast reader, TerminalMontage's style being so snappy and quick (which is really cool!) made me worried that I'd have to pause for longer boxes. It helps SO much with the flow, to see when I do and don't need to pause. And the delays were the perfect amount of time too, not lingering too long nor just disappearing once fully typed. I think I only had to stop once, moreso because my brain skipped a beat and I got confused misreading something entirely by my own oops.
Man, I don't know if it would be possible, but if at the end of the series having a book Nabiu's complete journal from throughout the series as a physical copy would be awesome merch.
An aspect I adored that I feel may have been overlooked by others was the creature design. The clockbirds in the woods, the Layline Lycan, the wooden gnomeophone, all of it was so well thought out and interesting!!
A Leyline Lycan... a Big Bad wolf, was impersonating the grandma that the intern in RED was thinking of. Was this episode supposed to be a Little Red Riding Hood seasoned episode? Are they all going to have a flavoring of those kinds of fairy tale seasoning?
I noticed that too! And they got there from information from a fox! Edit: I think I got sleep deprivation from playing this on loop the whole night, got NO idea what foxes have to do with little red riding hood.
I love everything about this. The voices fit so good, and even fits their non-verbal personalities. Their facial expressions, and everything. Also the tiny things, like the loading icon freezing for a second. And Nabiu is soooo cute, I love it.
I absolutely LOVE his attention to detail. Like in the intro, it takes a real 33 seconds from when the timer on Karoto's die says "00:00:33" to when it is able to be used. We know Mister Montage has amazing attention to detail already, but I was especially excited by that one for no particular reason.
I absolutely love the timer bar underneath all of the dialog so slow readers can pause if they need without having to rewind. It's such a wonderful addition, even as someone who reads quickly, I love it. As always, amazing work, can't wait to see more!
something that seems cool is that while Nabiu seems to work on RPG logic, Karoto seems to function more on DND logic, given the dice and the surprise at RPG elements happening around Nabiu
@@goli8699 to be fair, dnd is the most popular ttrpg, and not everyone knows the term "ttrpg" and even then not all ttrpgs even use dice so dnd is a fair term for the destination, even if "ttrpg vs jrpg" would be more accurate
What makes TerminolMontage so good is the small, tiny moments he adds in that adds extra story and enjoyment in. For example, the scene with the monkeys bullying karoto. Even karoto getting hit by toast made it better
12:41 this whole interaction out of the house is so funny. Karoto acting like he didnt notice anything so they can gtfo, while nabiu is probably dead serious when saying she thinks grandma seemed kinda off *turns to giant glowing crack and floating house with a possessed grandma inside* "are u sure?" 😭😂
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SHOW. The insane attention to detail, the video gamey aspect, Nabiu's walking animation, the chaotic nature the screams TerminaMontage, and the simple overarching plot. Just found my new favorite show!!
Completely agree, my only gripe is that it’s sometimes a bit hard to read all of the text displayed in the time allotted, other than that, perfect show :)
Loving how creative the RPG elements are depicted in the show and how the characters interact with them. Also extremely smart giving text boxes a timer so it doesn't mess with the flow of the show. Ya got something real special here.
The way I smiled when The Paladin of Green Tree (I had to call him something) Ate grandmas cookies. This whole Pilot captured my attention from start to finish and I can't wait to see more.
"Nabiu" is Catalan for "blueberry," and "karoto" is Esperanto for "carrot." I bet that TerminalMontage will make that knight's name just be "broccoli" in some obscure language.
I love Karo's silent "WHAT??" at 11:40, and all the character and creature designs are super cool. This pilot was fantastic! I'd love to see this turned into a regular series!
This was an absolute treat to watch. Your love for JRPGs is real and heartwarming. I love how you make them talk like Banjo Kazooie or Undertale characters. And Nabiu is the best and cutest little black mage ever! I would absolutely love to see her and Karato be guests in your future parodies. They deserve a spot among the megastars like Mario and Kirby!
It's a little thing, but I adore the progress bars under dialogue boxes to show when the action on screen is about to stop, and the scene is set to advance. That tiny detail is such a fun way to set pacing and adds to the style of this "game".
My daughter and I just watched this pilot and we are both REALLY looking forward to the next episode. You captured the lighthearted silliness + action + fun of a Nintendo RPG in a show format and we loved the Bestiary/Diary entries at the end too.
Never have I thought someone I've watched since high school has made it this far into making their own series. I love this with a passion. Please keep up the good work
This is fun we get to appreciate the subtle details, like the cool, glowing mushrooms, the multiple buckets by the well, that one shutter that's coming off, and the door frame being bigger than the actual door. This house is fairly old and someone probably lived there before Naibu. The thumbnail makes me think we're going to meet Oak's Soodowoodo from the Battle Royals.
I need 12 more episodes, a Christmas Special and Nabiu's hat as merch !!! Seriously speaking, this pilot was amazing (waited all night to watch it with 5,000 more people at the premiere); I can't believe just 4 people made this. It has all the classic charm one would expect from Terminal Montage and there are a lot of fun references to the Parodies in the Channel. EDIT 1: After rewatching this, I didn't realise that Nabiu is a girl !!! Anyway, she is adorable and really looking forward to her adventures in this beautifully animated world. Plus, Professor Wizzro is my favourite character. EDIT 2: My comment is longer hearted after editing ? :'(
You know that N64 game where the main character gets poisoned by goblins? Because you can't cure goblin poison, and main dude's friend died. He wore a hat like the wee lass.
Nabiu is so cute when she stops to doodle and take notes, and her very loud, long "YEAH!" 😂 Love her already And Carrot-oh has got me intrigued 👀 His weapon/instrument mechanic is genius, too!
I do love the amount of world building is set via "show don't tell" allowing us to fill in the gaps ourselves while having explain portions be diagetic from the MC's pov than what would be usually explained by a narrator or a long lecture of how "EVERYTHING WORKS". Leaves me wanting more as well want this world to be interactable in a RPG I can play or experience, but with how expressive the animations are would be very difficult to fit in a genuine game. Real excited to see where this goes!
I am SO GLAD the grandma made it out okay! I live with my grandma and everytime I see an old lady grandma type character I think of her. Such a good pilot!
Honestly, it works even better in this context. Anyone who's played an action RPG knows how painful 30 seconds can be when your ability is on cooldown.
Thought I didn't care to watch this, then RUclips autoplayed it for me 10 days after it came out and I was immediately in love with the mixture of actual stakes, serious characters and your brand of humor (which I thought was the only thing I was on this channel for). Really amazing work
This series is giving off strong "over the garden wall" vibes, but it's so creative and screams "terminalmontage" in every way. Absolutely LOVING THIS so far!
Just pure fuego. The loading bars on the dialogue telling you how long they're gonna last so you can pause if you need to is a crazy touch. Such a good quality of life addition
Ohhhh my goodness, I had a big ol' smile on my face the entire time watching this. All the background work is especially eye-catching. And your comedic sense of timing that's present in all your work shines forth and makes every scene snappy and fun. AGH! GAH!!! I'm so excited to see more of this!!!!
The amount of creative ideas in this is insane. And I love the little details put into it. The humour is there too, like the knight falling from the rooftop. The best part of it all, is that it's structured like video game!
TerminalMontage is the Genndy Tartakovsky of RUclips animations. He can create amazing worlds, characters, all within a fun plot with little to no dialogue. I'm excited to see what he can do with something that's 100% original.
There comes a time in every fan creator's life when they strike out to make an original story, and you've hit it out of the park! Hoping to see more of Nabiu and her epic adventures!
The fact it took THIS long to get a TerminalMontage Original is criminal. With just the pilot, this is already my favorite animated series on yt. It's really charming, I love the characters, the creatures are really cool and the worldbuilding is awesome! Really good start, looking foward to episode 2!
The Leyline Lycan really FEELS like a boss fight, with the different "phases" even being vulnerable to different parts of the "party's" kit (The base form vulnerable to the guitar's sound and the possessed objects being vulnerable to the matter manipulating Echo Rod). Very good use of RPG ideas in the choreography of a non-turn-based battle. Fantastic premise, excellent pilot, do give all the mores of that plz. You know, in due time and all that.

I'm loving the subtle sound design detail: The blips for speaking aren't just random, they closely follow the words being spoken down to the syllables! It's especially obvious when Wizzro and Nabiu talk about the chair's trigger word.

Karoto hiding his stats was very funny as his biggest stat increase was in deceitfulness. Also Nabiu’s face when meeting him was adorable
So far, Karoto seems like he's going to follow the trope of "guy who eventually betrays the party but comes to regret it and rejoins."
I'm getting an idea for the future where Karoto comes to care for Nabiu but doesn't realize it, until he sees his Deceitfulness score go DOWN when he levels up and he's like "no no no no wait"

@@MokonaModokiESthank you for doing the legwork on this!
I didn't pay attention to that!

17:51 I love the detail of Karo hiding his “decietfulness” stat from Nabiu by walking behind it! All the video gamey references are so great!
I ADORE how this acts like a fake video game, I also adore that the loading bar and the character running animation on said loading bar stagger a bit

The OST did NOT have to go that hard! Every single theme was an absolute bop, and nailed the RPG theme this show is going for!
@@Duelkitten1 must be a Triangle then

@@hakai1014 given he was being chased. I would wager he must have. But it wasn't effective with so many guards. Maybe the flute works best for small groups.

Going back to this video again and I just realized, while Karo is deceiving Nabiu those few lies wouldn't really seem like enough to get a +90 in his stats. Then it hit me that a good chunk of that boost must have come from the start of the episode where Karo deceived all of the guards by 'vanishing' off the roof top until he was in the clear to book it. After all he didn't level up until then.

please don't be discouraged by Nabiu having less views than your fandom works! its incredible fun, and incredibly done! the rpg mechanics, character design, Nabiu's active reaserch, the physical comedy of hiding the stat page, the unique text babble for ever character and the Haunting for voice acting being used to show something intrinsically wrong, all of it is just so much fun. i want to see more of this series. you and your team are starting something wonderful and exciting and i hope there will be more, no matter how long the wait.
A half million views in a day seems juuuuuust fine, to me. :)

Longer, and *Important* dialogue
This is the type of animation that actually needs to be on Netflix and stuff like that
Pls dont ever sell out terminal lol they would dilute your style til is all squeaky clean family friendly
Absolutely not. Mainstream media with ideological agenda is exactly what creators do NOT need.
Also netflix would just cancel it after 2 seasons, NEVER make a show with them
Man, I don't know if it would be possible, but if at the end of the series having a book Nabiu's complete journal from throughout the series as a physical copy would be awesome merch.

I love how Tate is based on his version of Yoshi and how the flying wooden doll that Wizzro talks to looks like an elderly Geno.
You know that N64 game where the main character gets poisoned by goblins? Because you can't cure goblin poison, and main dude's friend died. He wore a hat like the wee lass.
Don’t forget a Halloween special too
I really need plushies.
Twelve episodes might seem pretty demanding. Eight episodes may be sufficient enough. =)
Nabiu is so cute when she stops to doodle and take notes, and her very loud, long "YEAH!" 😂 Love her already
And Carrot-oh has got me intrigued 👀 His weapon/instrument mechanic is genius, too!
I love Karroto immediately applying his deception increase to help him hide his deception increase from Nabiu
Agreed, grandmothers are precious.
0:48 The madlad. It’s actually timed to the count down. It’s not stretched out for the sake of story. Well done!
Honestly, it works even better in this context. Anyone who's played an action RPG knows how painful 30 seconds can be when your ability is on cooldown.
I like how the scenery lingers a bit so we can enjoy a few more seconds of it (:
Thought I didn't care to watch this, then RUclips autoplayed it for me 10 days after it came out and I was immediately in love with the mixture of actual stakes, serious characters and your brand of humor (which I thought was the only thing I was on this channel for). Really amazing work

I can tell that story design is your true ambition. Keep it up, Jeremy. This was great!
Honestly, finding a teleporting chair is one of the most original quest ideas ever.
I have a feeling they won't be finding that chair for a while
The fact it took THIS long to get a TerminalMontage Original is criminal.
