    There are so many great historical touches that add to this pilot. My favorite is Serafine being able to fire single shots while her BAR is still in full-auto. The full-auto cyclic rate on the BAR is slow enough that squeezing off single shots like she does is absolutely possible, and her "walking fire" style was a technique that was really taught to BAR riflemen during WWI trench raids.

      I highly recommend going through the comic if you haven't already, cause I'd like to think Tracy had a lot to say about certain historical accuracies portrayed in the pilot due to how much she's researched for her work.
      There's a lot of snippets of historical info she leaves under new released pages and I'll always remember the one about laws on putting food down the sink XD also the comic is just .. marvelous. The shading, use of color and fine details make any page worthy of being a standalone print honestly.

    For anyone wondering why Mordecai doesn't take that clear shot at Ivy:
    Ivy Pepper is Lackadaisy's long-time 'jazz baby' - adopted by Atlas May (founder and original boss of Lackadaisy) as his goddaughter. When Atlas died, Viktor assumed the mantle of Ivy's godfather. Viktor and Mordecai were partners throughout most of Lackadaisy's history, so Mordecai well understands *exactly* how extreme Viktor would react towards anyone who harmed Ivy. Mordecai detests the Savoys, so he wouldn't lose any sleep if *they* killed Ivy - a very satisfactory reckoning to his way of thinking - but Viktor would know Mordecai's handiwork (if he had taken that shot) and has absolutely no desire to incur his former partner's personal wrath.

    • @whoasked3961
      @whoasked3961 2 дня назад

      Um... Is this a theory, or is it confirmed?
      Because, based on the comics, I would assume Mordecai wouldn't be overly concerned with incuring the wrath of Viktor, having kneecapped him to force him into retirement upon his departure. I just assumed he couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger here because of the sentimentality mentioned by Serafine, especially given this entire thing was a trifling matter to begin with, and he only seemed to feel Lackadaisy was worth their attention after it was all over.

    • @twylanaythias
      @twylanaythias 2 дня назад

      @@whoasked3961 AFAIK, it's not canonically confirmed. But as former partners-in-crime, I doubt *ANYONE* would know Viktor better than Mordecai.
      Viktor has repeatedly show himself to be more a force of nature than a mere mortal being - akin to the berserkers of lore. There was that one ambush in the comics where Viktor took a shotgun blast to the chest and just kept fighting as if he'd never been shot; only after it was all over, and everyone else was safe, did he settle down and his injury began to affect him.
      Also in the comics, Mordecai saw first-hand how Viktor took hits and shots which would have felled anyone else and just kept on coming - and that was "just business". As his former partner, Mordecai also knows that Viktor is far more cunning than one would expect from his rough exterior.
      I'm pretty sure you'll agree that Viktor would make it his mission in life to bring tremendous suffering to anyone who harmed Ivy. And I'm sure you'll also agree that few people would understand this as well as Mordecai. I, for one, would never risk giving that surly Slovak reason to specifically come after me!

    • @whoasked3961
      @whoasked3961 День назад

      @@twylanaythias While I'm sure Viktor would definitely want to hunt Mordecai down like a dog if it ever came to that, I'm just not convinced he'd be very effective in his current state. "Viktor took a shotgun blast to the chest and just kept fighting as if he'd never been shot." No, he did not. He managed to punch out one guy after being shot, but he was woozy and coughing and visibly "a mess" according to Ivy, and in denial about needing a doctor. He was not firing on all cylinders.
      "Only after it was all over, and only after everyone else was safe, did he settle down and his injury began to effect him." His injury effected him immediately, but ignoring that, Freckle was still actively shooting farmers when Viktor settled down. Rocky was still being hunted down at that time. Viktor tried to get down to the bar to help. He didn't stop because the threat was taken care of, he stopped because he couldn't get down the stairs, because of his bad knee. "See? This is why you're supposed to be tending to the bar now," Ivy says, commenting on Viktor's lack of effectiveness in the fight. Peak Viktor may have lasted longer, and maybe he'd even have taken care of the farmers after getting shot, but Viktor today can't manage stairs. Hell, Viktor probably wouldn't have been shot at all if he was still in peak condition, but he wasn't. Mordecai crippled him.
      "Mordecai saw first-hand how Viktor took hits and shots that would have felled anyone else and just kept on coming." That was before Mordecai shot the man in the knee, a step he took in order to hamper his effectiveness in fights, forcing him to retire. Mordecai was surprised Viktor was fighting at all, once he heard about how Viktor almost died that night. Mordecai is also insistent that the one tk blame for everything that's happened is Mitzi, because she insists on keeping Lackadaisy open, inviting the dangers that came naturally with this line of work.
      I'm not entirely convinced Mordecai wouldn't shoot Ivy if he was ever actually instructed to. Maybe he'd still opt out of it, maybe he still couldn't bring himself to do it, but he did promise, "do a more thorough job of 'destroying what you have left' if I'm asked to divert my professional attentions to you again." There's a good chance he only allowed himself to let his sentiments get in the way because he didn't have to kill Ivy, because this was a side quest that went astray. But if Asa told him to directly, he may force himself to act cruelly just as he has towards Lackadaisy since Atlas's passing.

    Btw in the graveyard scene, Rocky mentions Burke and Hare "did much worse and things turned out fine for them".

The main difference is that while most of them simply dug up graves to steal corpses, Burke and Hare straight up murdered people, as mentioned above. Fun fact, after Burke was hanged, his body was dissected, in a bit of poetic justice. That’s why his skeleton is on display at the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School.

Viktor notices Ivy and Freckle close, and he's like "woah, wtf is going on here-" and then he glares at Freckle. Freckle notices, he becomes worried. Next scene, Freckle is looking toward Viktor's direction.
    I'm sure if you've read the comic, you'd know exactly why. And you'd also know why he'd scratch the bar after Freckle and Ivy leave. I'm assuming Mitzi knows, since she's smiling at the two before patting Viktor on the arm once she leaves, too.

Zoot suits are mostly associated with the 1940s, though, and also have some very specific cultural history that I wasn’t aware of when I first started work on the comic (see the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943). I’ve long since veered away from drawing the suits that way. Grasping 1920s fashion took some learning, as did many other facets of Jazz Age history. Research has been an endless, ongoing part of making this thing, really. I’ve learned so much along the way and I’ve corrected many of my own errors when possible. I’ll inevitably make more of them, though, as any point in history is a vast, branching, convoluted topic.

      When Freckle has the gun he yells ivy to stop the car he probably knew that if ivy stopped the car nicodeme (I think that was the brother name) would be obligated to move the car to one side and get closer when done that Rocky puts Freckle on the window so he could have a clear shoot
      While he is checking the paper I believe he is the one that made that research (explains why his face is on the paper too) so he is the reason why they found the alcohol
      In the comics *SPOILERS*
      When Rocky is captured by the pig farmers they decide to kill him with a train that is gonna pass by and he hears they had to kill one of the pigs they had on the truck and notices the dead pig next to him and when he is in the train rails he says “hey why not take advantage of this situation and put the pig here?” The farmers agree and they leave and Rocky has time to escape

    Lackadaisy is set in the Prohibition Era 1920-1933. Cat's Don't Dance is set in the 1930's, specifically 1939. The same vernacular, slang, and fashion are relevant to both eras. Which is why Lackadaisy reminds a lot of people of Cat's Don't Dance. It's also set 50-60 years before the Fazzbear timeline so it was really, really stupid to even try to make a reference.

      Actually no. I've found some data on this, an M1927 is an M1921 factory-altered at Auto Ordnance with a semi-only trigger pack, literally just milling off the "1" from an existing gun and changing it to a "7." Only about 100-150 were ever made and they were a commercial failure, police certainly didn't want them and at the time it was still legal to just buy the auto version (National Firearms Act didn't exist until 1934).
      Of course, because of these origins and the fact that under NFA a gun "remembers" its original configuration, they still have to be registered as Title 3 machine guns even if they're still in their semi-auto configuration.
      Of course, since the gun in the episode is fullauto, there's no reason to identify it as anything but an M1921AC, short of seeing the "full" milled off the trigger settings or the 1 being replaced with a 7.
      The "M1927s" you mostly see are modern replicas made as M1927-A1 by a company called Kahr Arms, and produced by Auto Ordnance starting in the 1970s. They can easily be distinguished from period guns by their longer barrels, 18 inches with the Cutts and 16.5 without, as opposed to 12 and 10.5 inches.

The scene where he gets very excited over the explosives has me wondering if Rocky’s a pyromaniac. Or maybe he’s an eccentric that happens to be an adrenaline junkie? In any case, this pilot perfectly encapsulates the drama, danger, romanticism, style, and lack lively times of the 20s/30s. Love the electro swing! Really adds to the atmosphere.

    This has got to be the 20th time I'm watching the pilot, but I just now noticed - they got *bullet velocities* right.
    In the quarry scene, when Seraphine first fires her BAR at Ivy and Freckle, from their PoV, you can hear the zip of the bullet first, followed shortly by the gunshot sound. The BAR fires .30-06, the bullets are supersonic, they travel faster than sound, so this is accurate.
    But when Freckle shoots the pocket pistol, which fires the subsonic .25 ACP, where the bullet travels slower than the speed of sound, at Mordecai and the Savoys from their PoV, we first hear the gunshot sound and then see the bullet impact. This is accurate too.
    Same with Mordecai's M1911 when he shoots it at Freckle. .45 ACP subsonic, from Freckle's PoV, gunshot sound comes first followed by the bullet impact.

      25 acp with FMJ is 760 feet per second
      45 acp from a 1911 in 1927 would have been 830 feet per second and 950 feet per second from a Thompson.
      these are after leaving barrel but velocity will increase then fall after a certain distance. this is why in tests 22lr from a rifle with a maxim silencer would have several sonic booms as the 22lr increased velocity as it traveled.
