I love how the soldier doesn't die in a heroic pose like the hero he thinks he is. He dies being petrified by his own weapon, desperately crawling away from it. Really poetic.
I love the character/personalities of each of the snakes. They aren’t generic, mindless or bending to Medusa’s will. They are their own organism separate to her. When they are not eating people, biting them, or turning them into stone, they actually seem like good sidekicks, good friends, very goofy too 😂
You made a beautiful retelling of the myth here! I really love your designs for Medusa (the reddish purple complement the teal snakes perfectly) and the Hero/Perseus. The fact that he not only used war prisoners for slave labor, but also the stone bodies of petrified enemies to literally build his kingdom, was downright chilling. Even if I'm a bit bummed that Medusa had a start of evil at the end, it's not all that surprising considering the amount of shit she had to go through...
that is indeed admirable. i will always be faithful to this story. and wish Medusa nothing but the best over her new dominion. also, RIP the beautiful woman the ceaser petrified for hurting his eye. i would treat her better.
The actual Medusa's story itself is the worst. She got forced upon by Poseidon, and Athena didn't even bother to help her, instead cursed her because she got R. And if I remembered correctly, because of her madness she devoured her Sisters, and became a monster from the guilt of killing her beloved sisters.
@@Become-Eggplant depending on the version there are actually quite a few different stories from her bring a cursed woman to just being born as a Gorgon one story is not more true then the others as the story is never really about her.
I really like this version of the story, as it tells a different event to the classic story while also incorporating other elements, such as the fact Medusa was originally BORN as a Gorgon rather than it being a curse by Athena. And Perseus here is a surprisingly effective villain. He's cold, ruthless, strong and powerful as expected of a Greek Hero, and most importantly smart. He clearly remembers Medusa and seems to have pieced together that his shield's petrifying power came from her rather than the snake he cut off and took advantage of his scared eye's lessened sight to bypass that while still allowing him to see her. And you can clearly tell he's not a guy who plays around with his enemies. The second he sees you're a threat, he immediately goes for the kill. No monologues. No shows of honor. No underestimating his opponent.
Perseus is often portrayed as a different kind of "hero". Rather than relying solely on valor and strength of arms, he is cunning. In some versions of the story, he doesn't fight Medusa; he decapitates her while she's sleeping. When he brings the head to Polydeuctus, he uses it to petrify him and his entire court, saving his mother Danae from marrying a man she didn't want. He also accidentally kills his own grandfather Acrisius with a discus, making himself ruler of the land. In none of these scenarios does he rely on straight combat. Rather he uses his wits and/or other tools to defeat his enemies.
That ending seemed almost....ominous. Like Medusa had to give into the savagery of her enemies a bit, just so she could smile at the closest to 'peace' she might ever get.
Agreed, and the green scales that appear on her face concerns me. I'm happy that the tyranny is over, but I hope Medusa doesn't start becoming the monster that legends claim her to be.
@@toxicghost58 fortunately I don't think that's the case as in sequel comic which by the looks of it took place centuries later probably around world war 2, and there she was a lot more expressive and kind hearted actively against bloodshed, even saving a wounded soldier.
@@damonlam9145 That's true, but you can tell that this installment takes place centuries before the original comic, and anything can happen in between.
I’m sad there’s no happy ending, but I realize that’s the point. Medusa’s tale was never meant to be happy and cute. It was and forever will be a devastating tale. I enjoyed your take on it, the retelling, and your art style was beautiful. Thank you for this.
well, this isn't Medusa's tale at all. The art, animation and story version are beautiful but let's not compare it with the myth 'cause they're clearly different things
@@cypvh74 They meant that at the end everything is lost. The ending isn't uplifting, if anything it's melancholic, because despite the villain has been defeated, the loss was too much for it to be a win. He killed so many people and conquered so much, just so he could die at the end and in my opinion he got off light, compared to what I would have chosen for him.
A beautiful story about a girl who has no one to love because she was born with a curse, and a man who has no one to love because he wanted the power of the curse for himself.
To be more precise, Medusa tried to run away from Poseidon and went to the temple of Athena to seek her help, but she did not answer, and Poseidon found her and raped her. Later, Athena scolded Medusa for engaging in "lewdness" in her temple. @@asldmyt8459
I really like the Kings design. He's drawn like a good guy. Every time he looks happy it feels genuine, not like he's enjoying other peoples pain or anything. It makes the whole story feel like a tragedy. He had opportunities to be good. But every time, he chose to do evil. And that brought destruction on everything he cared about.
@@lionpraid9408 That is a fair point, though he definitely was prone to outbursts of anger and cruelty. Even for the time, making slaves/prisoners break apart their petrified friends and loved ones is pretty messed up.
@@lionpraid9408 В смысле - «нельзя называть злодеем»? Убийство своего сюзерена во все времена было именно злодейством. Поцыент как раз-таки являет собой пример эталонного злодея и тирана. I like his design too, although, he's drawn not necessarily as a good guy, but as a human. He had people he loved and wanted to share his successes with, and he made choices which he regretted and couldn't take back.
That dude is built like prime mike tyson combined with ronnie coleman and has a evil eye scar and literally builds monuments out of his enemies corpses like the wall of his kingdom are built out thousands of dead bodies which are built by his slaves who probably knew those people that were petrified
I know this isn't supposed to be a story with a happy ending where things work out well for her, but man, I still just want to give her a hug! It'll be my headcannon that she someday meets someone blind and can live a happy life together.
There's a story sonewhere in RUclips, i saw YEARS ago, where she finds a blind baby and raises it. If i remember correctly, it ends in tragedy (i mean, it's Greek, why not?) Still sad tho
god this is incredible. it was only one image, but the image with the two deer... that nearly made me burst into tears on the spot. the father waited with his child... ever since they first got petrified, and died by their side... brb gonna go sob my eyes out
I'm glad to finally see Medusa seen as a more troubled relatable person and not just a straight up villain for once. Her backstory is so tragic. And I love how beautiful she looks in your art style
I think I seen stuff where she wants the picture of the year. I just dont remember what they were called. if I find any of them I will make sure to tell you
Gosh, this was absolutely breathtaking! The art, the music, the STORY... I remember watching the prequel when it first came out and while I never forgot about it, this installment was still such a surprise! After all these years, Medusa has a *whole kingdom* to live in--a place where she can finally be free and never hurt anyone or be hurt ever again. Its still sad that it was either this or death, of course, but at least she's *safe* and, in a way, *free*
I don't know if that's what the end is alluding to. Her snakes are all red-eyed again at the very end... I ain't sure what it could mean, but it doesn't seem good.
@@Lamplordable My personal theory is that she's embracing her more gorgan side rather than sticking to being wholly human with snakes for hair...but that's just a theory.
Well, this now brings me some trouble connecting with the ww2 comic. Yet,we have witnessed a fragment of what would happen if she went full nuclear (and i belive this was tame because it were only the eyes of Gorgon, who had died many years before, and so its power must have decresed to some degree)
While she wasn’t meant to be, the Gorgon sisters were just another series of monsters birthed by Medusa, I’ve always loved how people reinterpret Medusa as a tragic hero, often letting her live past her bout with Perseus either through magic or Perseus being merciful. This version where Perseus turns into a violent tyrant is no less interesting.
Except it's not a reinterpretation, not really. Originally she was a victim who was cursed. She was punished by Athena, blamed for being that victim. Honestly, she deserved better. She may not have been a "hero" per se, but she was definitely tragic.
Well it depends on which version your speaking of your referring to the one where Poseidon did you know what. but the most oldest version of the story was that she was always a monster and she had two sisters
@@yndrelbosch3678that’s a Roman version from a guy who apparently didn’t like the gods all that much and originally (or as original as it gets with stuff passed down through oral tradition) she was just one of the gorgon sisters, having always looked like that
What are you talking about? In the original version, the immortal sisters (Stheno and Euryale) were the sisters of Medusa (Medusa was a mortal). They were originally the priestesses of Athena temple. However, one day, Poseidon saw Medusa, and captivated by her beauty, he raped her in the Athena temple. And Athena saw that as a transgression from Medusa, because someone has to take the blame, and gods are blameless (although some interpretation says that Athena did so out of jealousy, and others say that Medusa's beauty was the cause, and therefore should be punished). Yes, that's how god's logics work. So Athena cursed Medusa, and when Stheno and Euryale defended Medusa, they were cursed too.
This version of Perseus is honestly growing on me. He's ruthless and intimidating but there's still enough humanity in him for us to show him sympathy, he's kinda giving me similar vibes to Dracula from the Castlevania TV show
I agree. After all, Everyone is the hero in their own story. Ppl rarely see themselves as the villain (unless they've gone mad and given up their humanity to speed run their villain arc). Villains that aren't relatable are lazy writing and make for boring stories IMO. Like in most versions, Medusa is a villain. But we feel great pity for her. We know it wasn't her choice or even her fault to be turned into a monster. I feel bad for her anyway
Thing is, this is a *complete* inversion of his character. Perseus in mythology only went after Medusa to stop the king from raping and forcefully marrying his mother (and the king sent him after her with the explicit intention of getting him killed), after he was finished using her head as a weapon he relinquished it as an offering to Athena and lived the rest of his days as a wise king next to Andromeda, the only woman he ever loved. For Greek Hero standards, that is *extremely* tame.
My head canon for why he betrayed Atlas is because he wanted the head of monster with snakes for hair. Perceus realized that the head he got wasn't the one Atlas wanted and it would not only show that the gorgon might still be alive, but also that he would force him to hunt down and murder a child. So, he had to get him out of the picture. Sadly, he his new responsibilities ended up making fill the same niche Atlas did back when he still ruled.
This should win an award. 🥲 That last gaze from Medusa, giving in to villainy send goosebumps to my soul... And actually, she should be a villain after everything she'd been through
Not a word spoken, a literal slidedhow as the main way to tell the story, and yet it's *AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE.* God, please, give this person an animation studio already.
This feels like watching a an old Disney Movie, when they were still good. It was breathtaking, it was exciting, it was refreshing and it was very sad. Thank you for making this, I will treasure it.
So wait, his eye getting slashed actually had a point narratively?! At first I thought it was just to show his collapsed marriage, but it actually served a purpose later! Damn that was clever. Also, I remember finding your original Medusa story years ago and absolutely loving it! It was very beautiful, and I'm so happy you've added more to the story. This was beautiful too. It was a very pleasant surprise, I wasn't expecting to see this. I absolutely loved this too! 😭
Only silent and ashes remains, the echoes of an era that reach it's end, but at last, Medusa is free from the chackles of endless suffering, now able to choose a new path, far away from the painful memories of the past.
I love this. The fact you can tell a heartwarming story without any dialogue it’s just… ahhhh my heart, it is sad, but happy to find this randomly in my subscription feed
Oh my God! The part where she sees her mother again and runs to hug her had me tearing up! And as she turned to dust, taking the shape of the cobr head for a moment was beautiful! The story and art is so captivating that i often forget it's just pictures and not an actual motion picture! That's how magnificent this is! I love EVERYTHING about it! X3 Words cannot do this art justice, there just isn't enough!
This is simply amazing! This is proof that you don't need dialog to tell a good story. Also I just wanna say that I LOVE Medusa's character design here!
Absolutely gorgeous. And the fact that the entire thing is perfectly coherent with no words, just visuals and music, is a testament to the artist's skill as a visual storyteller.
I really enjoyed this! It’s like if a Disney Renaissance film had the dark, gritty “survivalist” tone of “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal”, especially how it manages to tell a mature and compelling story without any dialogue. SIDE NOTE: It’s probably just a coincidence, but I couldn’t help but notice how the stripes on Medusa’s snakes have the exact, same dark green colors as Fang from “Primal.” xD
Like the part that the shield backfires on Perseus and as he turn to stone, he sees his deceased wife Andromeda but she wouldn’t look at him and walk away. Perseus was heartbroken, defeated and remorseful. The song was perfect for this part
An ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, IT'S OUT AND IT'S AMAZING AS HECK. The artstyle, the lore, the character designs and expressions... I'm literally shaking in my chair while writing this. The beauty of this is indescribable.
You are such a talented person, I'm actually crying rn. Medusa never deserved any of this. Her mother, her parent-like cobra, her lover(blind soldier), all died. Her snakes are trying their best, but they can't help it if their rage, instincts, and hunger take over. This is a really sad, really good story, please make more!!💚
now after I have seen the prequel as well (yes, I saw this one first as it was recommended first.) This is my canon of Medusa now. Man looking at this gave a rollercoaster of emotions. It was such a GOOD story and credits to you for doing all the work on your own, talk about one man army! It was so good at the point where I straight up applaud.
This is like time travel, thank you for your work, can't wait to see it ! Edit : Okay. The art. The music. The rhythm. Everything is near perfect. And yep, I teared up.
I honestly loved it. The change of the myth was refreshing and interesting. The art was beautiful. The story was touching. That smile and expression changing at the end was amazing. A poor lonely girl to whom the world tunred its back on, now turns her back on the world. I'd be excited to see more of this or anything else you create. Keep the great work!
This is an unexpected, but incredibly appreciated, surprise. I loved how you portrayed Medusa more sympathetically in the Prequel, and it’s so cool to see a version of her that is becoming more of a Greek hero than just a random monster (especially since, as many have said these days, her most famous origin story is incredibly tragic and messed up). Plus, it’s good to hear this is the *true* sequel, as while I think Medusa and the Blind Soldier is good, it was too sad for me and didn’t always make a lot of sense regarding what was going on. This story feels more like a genuine continuation. I do hope we get at least one more part to your version of Medusa-hopefully one where she can find companionship and a happy ending. I’d love to see that, especially since so few people are willing to show that. 🙂
I love the way in which you wove together a mythological "What If" here. What if it was Perseus who was the true monster, and the story was a lie? In the end, there's a darkness, a sort of sad acceptance of "Yeah... this is how this should have ended," in her eyes, filled with a loathing of the very people she has sought to avoid for so long. In a way, she becomes the 'monster' of myth, but in a greater way, she puts an end to the blight that her near death caused in Perseus' hands. The story of Medusa in myth has varied perspectives on the character, and this much more sympathetic variation, and a view of Perseus not as the clever and brave hero, but an opportunistic and demanding monster far worse than those he ever slew, it's ... interesting and certainly visually compelling. I'm very glad you finished this work.
I... if this were the original myth i would have believed it. You have brought forth something so beautiful that i can only gasp in awe on every scene. Every frame is art and despite not having words said, you gave all the elements to under stand. Take all the time you need for the next time, I will be waitng. I love dearly how you treated Perseus. i loved how he, by his own morals, was corrupted after attaining so much power. but in the end, he realized the why his wife turned on him, scared of what he had become.
the fact that I'm so invested in this. I've always loved the story of medusa and seeing you put your own twist on the story as well as giving her such depth, it's just, mwah chefs kiss. she never wanted to hurt anyone and when she saw that he was using this power for bad she knew she had to stop him. I love the hidden warning you added as well with his wife wanting to leave him. even if she truly loved him, she knew how bad he would become and how his heart had turned to stone (pun intended), and she knew she could do nothing to help him. I think that's why in the end she didn't go to his side and instead she left him there, turning her back on him and walking away, and when he saw that he realized how horrible and evil he had become, that's why we see him giving in. wonderful piece, I'm excited to see what you do in the future!

Absolutely fantastic, beyond gorgeous, 10/10 great. The art, music and storytelling all come together to make something that feels grand and dynamic despite being a slideshow. I love Medusa’s portrayal and her giving in and accepting the label forced on her by others was tragic, judging by the smile at the end. In the end I think I ended up feeling the most sorry for the king, being blinded by anger and accidentally turning his wife to stone, sending him on a downwards spiral into tyranny all while constantly gripped by regret, constantly fighting and killing since at that point it seems to be all he knows, and at the very end when he sees his wife turn away from him, you can see how all his guilt and regrets consume him and the way he just gives up made my heart ache. Two tragic ends befitting the retelling of a classic Greek legend.

How is not a happy ending? The evil guy is defeated, and Medusa lives. There is still all the terrible tragedy, but the ending is uplifting.

A beautiful story about a girl who has no one to love because she was born with a curse, and a man who has no one to love because he wanted the power of the curse for himself.
medusa didn't born w a curse. Athena cursed her because she slept w poseidon
@@asldmyt8459 yeah but in this storyline she was born with it
To be more precise, Medusa tried to run away from Poseidon and went to the temple of Athena to seek her help, but she did not answer, and Poseidon found her and raped her.

В смысле - «нельзя называть злодеем»? Убийство своего сюзерена во все времена было именно злодейством.

С таким походом к делу, долго не живут.
There’s a comic out there similar to this where she meets a blind soldier

I'm glad to finally see Medusa seen as a more troubled relatable person and not just a straight up villain for once. Her backstory is so tragic. And I love how beautiful she looks in your art style
I think I seen stuff where she wants the picture of the year. I just dont remember what they were called. if I find any of them I will make sure to tell you
I loved the way she looked at the end.
Evil or not, at least she had a happy ending, as well as seeing her mother one last time. 😍😭
Well at the end there, she is now descending down a dark path, she seems to be cool leaving nothing but stone and death at the end.
@@hayseshouhda5730 i love chaotic evil characters.

The City of Ruins. Devastatingly beautiful.
@@dannilopez3883 The Stone Kingdom if you would say, the stone kingdom in the moment of uprising.
I thought the same!
Better this than to be a Vaternian
Omg i think I just remember that vid, holy crap i forgot about this
I don't know if that's what the end is alluding to.
@@yndrelbosch3678that’s a Roman version from a guy who apparently didn’t like the gods all that much and originally (or as original as it gets with stuff passed down through oral tradition) she was just one of the gorgon sisters, having always looked like that
@@Scp-2317-K lemme guess. Watched Red’s overly sarcastic productions?

@gotgreatness notice how her mom turns into the snake that loved her before it's death
@@Indy44636 yea, I love the attention to detail
Made me cry all over again!
This version of Perseus is honestly growing on me. He's ruthless and intimidating but there's still enough humanity in him for us to show him sympathy, he's kinda giving me similar vibes to Dracula from the Castlevania TV show
He also did enslave and kill lots of people for little reason, but yeah, villains aren’t born, they’re made.
Even so, I like this version.
Have you ever read/seen the original story?
This should win an award. 🥲 That last gaze from Medusa, giving in to villainy send goosebumps to my soul... And actually, she should be a villain after everything she'd been through
Not excuses for villain but their are reasons
Isn't it amazing how quickly everyone assumes its her turning evil.
Yes for a award but no for her being a villain because I feel like she didn’t want any of the things that happened happen😢
eren jeager protagonist to antagonist moment
There is a big difference between a villain and a villainized victim.
Ты просто прекрасный человек
Kind of crazy how after so long people are still making great, high quality interpretations of Greek mythology. This was very well done.
It looks more Roman era based.
I love how the spots in her face spread after she smirked. This was very well done
I love that it doesn't matter what language you speak, everyone can enjoy the story.
A true monster is not defined by their powers but what they uses those powers for.
This was a beautiful story.
HOLY CRAP, what followed after the shield shed tears GUTTED me. I'm sobbing between the music and art design.
Words cannot do this art justice, there just isn't enough!
SIDE NOTE: It’s probably just a coincidence, but I couldn’t help but notice how the stripes on Medusa’s snakes have the exact, same dark green colors as Fang from “Primal.” xD
yeah just wish that the characters had realistic teeth. also screw disney.
Reminds me of DreamWorks, they are the anti Disney. This film would fit in DreamWorks.
Are you Russian?
Everything about this is simply gorgeous.
The art.
The story.
Everything.
This is a really sad, really good story, please make more!!💚
This was a wonderful example of showing a story rather than telling it.
now after I have seen the prequel as well (yes, I saw this one first as it was recommended first.) This is my canon of Medusa now.
Teared up? I fucking bawled my eyes out twice. Holy shit, they did such a phenomenal job!
I really love her eyes, they really help make her expression stand out, so you really know what she's feeling. Also her face at 15:16 is priceless lol
Protecting her from him made me cry so much and the look of motherhood in the cobras ghost. So sad and amazing
Poor Mei is so sweet. Poor gal doesn’t deserve to be cursed like this. Also I love the details of the past parts of the comic 🥺
Huh?
@@FantasticFawnleap There was a previous comic set in 1940s Greece and it’s considered non canon anymore

I love dearly how you treated Perseus. i loved how he, by his own morals, was corrupted after attaining so much power. but in the end, he realized the why his wife turned on him, scared of what he had become.
Love the tiny little expressions on the tiny little snakes
the fact that I'm so invested in this.
Она с самого начала видела в нём тирана и монстра. Лишь перед смертью он смог прочесть это в её мимолётном взгляде, и он сам осознал, кто всё это время был настоящим монстром.
It's great to see your take on Medusa again! I absolutely LOVED the first 2 comics you've made about her, and I'm happy to see that you haven't forgotten about her. Uh no.
I love how this is a much darker alternative take on the story everybody knows. The music expresses that perfectly.
godDAMN this is probably one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS I HAVE SEEN IN AWHILE. You can just tell there was so much love put into this, the compositions in every scene are breathtaking and each scene carries so much WEIGHT. I loved this

This shit slapped! Easily the best Medusa story I’ve ever seen, compared to the simple villain. Really interesting how her mom became one the snakes (I assume) who ended up cursing her daughter, trying to often defend her but ending up making it worse.
Not to mention the Emperor who only spared her because she ran away and he had what he needed to assert his dominance. Not to mention the slaves who fought over the shield and later all petrified. Which, added to such a dark ending and the implications of the new scales.
Really good story! Hoping we get another sequel in the future of where she goes next. But, take as long as you need.
This story was beautiful, medusa wasn’t just her eyes, but her snake hair too. Also the final battle as her eyes turn red. A turn to evil . Ooh I want a sequel
