For everyone watching this late 2024, the design of the EHP is a bit different. I believe they have incorporated a stamping process to finish the bullets as the finish is different than before which was clearly all turned/CNC. The older design (seen in the video) has a different accuracy profile than the new design. The old design was inconsistent in my gun, while the new stuff is very accurate. The flutes are also wider at the base with the newer design.

If you watch ballistic high speed they have a good video showing the XD round and it fails to make continuous contact as it passes through. An air pocket forms in front of the bullet and it starts to tumble. Basically, its a flawed test at that point. No one seems to be talking about this but it should be a flaw all ballistic testers should be very concerned with.
It is something I am aware of to some degree. I have not seen that video, but I have said that I am skeptical as I can poke a football pump in gel and create that same damage. I often tell people that the damage that seems to be from air, I cannot comment on if it really does well in the real world as there's no real world data to cross reference, but the damage in gel with hollow points tends to be from petals cutting, which we can take at face value.
This ammo veers a little to the left. Learned the hard way when i bought a good amount of boxes to test. Aiming center mass and you'll get the bullets veering to the left slightly every ti.e. This ammo is now a no-go for me and I will stick with HST. The reason this is a lroblem for me is because i would then need to buy more boxes of this ammo (which is super expensive) to train with and adjust my shooting sight picture to account for adjustment of the veering so it aims center mass. Not worth that adjustment, money, and time changing up my training. Just stick with good ol' HST
I traded out my 9 mm Speer +p 124 g for these. Less recoil, less weight, flatter trajectory, more tissue damage, and better penetration. I believe these are the future for EDC.
The G9s look kind of like solid copper versions of the ARX projectiles. I would say this is kind of a light vs heavy in 9mm except the bullet styles are just so different. I do wonder if the damage in gel correlates to damage in living tissue.
Interesting results. I velocity tested some of their "+P factory seconds" out of my P365 last August. I shot a 10 round average and through a 3.1" barrel, I was getting on average 1468 fps. Kinda funny that I'm getting the exact same values you did,. The faster, lighter round is definitely noticeable when shooting out to distance at like 50 or further. Bit flatter shooting vs the slower, heavier rounds more commonly available. It's definitely not something I would regularly train with given the price, but occasionally and for a CCW piece? I'd feel pretty confident with it at least.
I just found stock of Atomic Ammunition 380 ACP 90 Gr. in nickel plated cases. Its rated at 1100fps and actually seems to be close to its rating too. It did amazingly well in another UTube Ammo testers reviews, in his gel tests with heavy denim. Like Federal HST Deep 380, its been very hard to find stock of this until now. Its 21.99 for 20 round boxes so its very affordable for a HP 380 defensive round that easily hits 12"+ in gel. Just wanted to pass this on to you. Until now all I could get that I wanted was Underwoods LeHigh Defense loads in 380.
I carried this ammo BUT After watching many videos I have switched back to federal HST for my 9mm and 40 carry because of the tumbling it causes but I will carry it in my pocket 380 only
I'm really interested in the +P version of the G9 80-grain EHP, but I'm hesitant to spend the money until I'm able to see real-world data on how it performs against bad guys. I've been carrying Federal 124-grain HST's for years because of it's proven track record and the fact that it remains consistent in its performance year after year. I'm thinking of upgrading to the +P version of the HST. Really nice review, though...
You never know. A lot of people are under the assumption that more barrel means hundreds of FPS more. Often times depending on the ammo that's not the case. You can't make something weak becomes a ton more powerful with more barrel. I can't comment on something as obscure as this ammo, but I don't honestly think the increase would add much added effect. Most 9mm+P ammo gains 50% more than 400 ft lbs energy from a pistol to carbine, 400 to 600 ft lbs. It's not amazing. Something like a .357 Mag from 4" revolver to carbine with hot ammo is more like 600 ft lbs increasing to 1,200, and that's a lot more.
So when does the patent on that bullet run out so other people can actually start producing it? It IS the patent keeping others from making 'external hollow points' right? Not some other reason?
At the beginning of the vid, you mentioned using baseline ammo, one of the being Federal HST I thought I heard you say. That is what I was referencing. Regardless good vid thanks for sharing.
Maybe I missed it in the video, but are the barrel twist rates the same between the two 9mm's? With an 80 grain bullet being extremely light for caliber I'm wondering if maybe that could be affecting the terminal performance and accuracy?
Would you recommend the G9 EHP +P 80gr or Speer gold dot short barrel +P 124gr for a 3.75in barrel? From your test it seems I would get close to the advertised velocity for the G9, and the Speer advertises 1150fps from a 3.5in barrel. My concern with the G9 is that it will tumble like it did in your test with the shorter barrel.
The bullet diameters are similar between the two calibers. In terms of foot lbs energy in duty size guns (5" semi auto VS 4" revolver) you usually are around 400-450 with the 9mm+P and 500-600 with .357 Magnum. The one main difference is that .357 Magnum will support heavier bullets with full power like 140, 158, 180 gr will still have 500-600 ft lbs energy but 9mm starts getting weaker and weaker with more bullet weight. Like 115 gr+P+ has more power than 124 gr+P+, the 135 gr has less power than 124 gr and 147 gr is super weak. A 147 gr 9mm+P will max out at like 350 ft lbs energy and a 158 gr .357 Mag as much as 700 ft lbs energy, but when you go down to 110 gr .357 Mag VS 115 gr+P+ 9mm you can get similar energy.
In terms of the actual cartridge, a 9mm or even a 9mm+P out of a carbine might hit 600 ft lbs energy as where a .357 Magnum is easily over 1,000 ft lbs energy. The real comparison comes when a 2" .357 Mag snub nose is used, as often times the energy is at around 400 ft lbs which is about the same energy as 9mm+P in about the same size firearm. The .357 Mag has twice the recoil in guns that small though.
I have a question: how quickly do these light for caliber bullets loose velocity compared to their more standard counterparts over longer distances? Is that something you could test with these and the 65 grain defenders?
Can't say I agree. There's not really much real world data on how they perform against bad guys. There's a good chance they wouldn't work that great, but until I see some data, one thing I can say is that hollow points do work so I am going to keep using them.
They are $29.69 for 20 rounds on the cheapest website, others are $30-$32 or so. Most of Underwood's Xtreme ammo is $29.50 on their website, other retailers have it for as cheap as $21.33 depending on the website. Your strong suit is not math as $21.33 times two is $42.66, which is more than $29.69.
@@franklinmarks7845 If you want an ammo that seems to not perform quite as well to save your life with, and that $8.36 more for G9 is way too expensive for your life, than all I can say is it's your life, not mine. I am not saying that in the real world one is better than the other, but even if they are all the same why are we here debating what is or isn't good enough for your life saving equipment when it's all over $8.36?
@@GunSamyeah I mean it's a pistol bullet you're more concerned with the penetration then damaged tracks, I mean I know the damage is good, what they say Island pathologist cannot tell the difference between a 9 mm or a 44 magnum till they locate the bullet, the skin elasticity starts to break after like two thousand feet a second
Great video!! I’ve got a question for the group. I just bought myself a S&W FPC, and now I’m trying to figure out the best ammo to use. Does anyone have an opinion, or better yet, any first hand experiences with the S&W FPC and this ammo? With the long 16” barrel, and so many more barrel twists than a compact or subcompact, I’m thinking it will work very well, but I don’t know for sure. Any thoughts or opinions?
★ (2nd post) In your opinion, could you see hardcast, if possible, benefiting from that design at traditional bullet weights and average or +p velocities? Or, is that even a reasonable question?
I would imagine that the bullet would deform significantly enough that the flutes wouldn't work all that well. Most of your bullet lead is something around 5-10 Brinell hardness, hard cast is generally somewhere in the 15 range as where copper is twice as hard as hard cast lead. I think part of the design that isn't talked about is the Xtreme bullets are often in 9mm, about 65 to 90 gr as where the Xtreme Penetrator bullet is 115 gr. It's no coincidence that the heavy one goes deeper, so the flutes are sort of an afterthought that help a tad to slow the bullet down. Even though the Xtreme Defender and Xtreme Penetrator have different flute designs, if you made that 115 gr have the same flute pattern as the Xtreme Defender, I think it would still over-penetrate. So my answer is no, because the flutes would probably crush, and even if they didn't the weight would be too high to slow down and not over-penetrate.
I can't remember who told me this on here, might have even been you lol...but they said there was a few instances of TAC-XP being used in the real world and they were extremely effective.
Someone said the one specific example was from a real world crime show, like the First 48 or something like that. They said the dead body contained an "extra lethal bullet" or something like that (you know how the anti-gun agenda spins things) and coming out of the body it was fully expanded to the typical massive 3/4" thing that they often do in gel.

Not great for self defense short barrel compacts! Full size pistols I’m liking what I’m seeing.Don’t worry about missing from 100 yards. How would you explain fearing for your life if their that far away? The biggest problem I can’t find these anywhere I’ve looked. Mel Gibson is the only one who shoots better at 100 yards 😂🤣
The way I have always seen it, is that I would gladly explain I feared for others' lives. The only reason I would shoot that far would be at a very clear mass shooter in a big area like a parking lot or mall or whatever. The distance of 100 yards looks really close in an urban environment, if you asked someone how far away this or that is in a Walmart parking lot, they would probably say 100 feet if in reality it was 300 feet away.
@@GunSam I can understand that but wow need a great backstop. You would have to worry about the public. You probably wouldn’t have a 5 inch barrel at a mall would you? I did some shooting from 50 yards with my Canik with a 4.07 inch barrel. I was happy to hit from that distance. Now I’m going to try 75 yards. If it’s 100 yards I’ll grab my deer 🦌 rifle.

I traded out my 9 mm Speer +p 124 g for these. Less recoil, less weight, flatter trajectory, more tissue damage, and better penetration. I believe these are the future for EDC.
Thenks
Good test. I would have liked to see the short barrel shot at 25, but in the end I'm not switching from the HST either.
Look decent, will keep an eye out. About slapped my ear off with that skeeter at 15:40.
The G9s look kind of like solid copper versions of the ARX projectiles. I would say this is kind of a light vs heavy in 9mm except the bullet styles are just so different. I do wonder if the damage in gel correlates to damage in living tissue.
It does not , g9 ammo v body is much more devastating anything with hydrostatic pressure (a body) is where this ammo shines
I wonder if the twist rate on handguns needs to be increased to take full advantage of the new copper slugs /
Hello Gun Sam, and thanks for the test. When firing the G9 ammo through the 3 " barrel, what did the recoil feel like?
I don't recall as it's been a month, but if I try to recall it felt about like normal standard pressure ammo.
@rjherb5895
Micah from garand thumb shows that low weight bullets significantly reduce recoil in his port vs comp video
thanks again.
Extreme Defender beater? Gotta try me some of these...
Yeah, if you look close they have the design of a white spandex tank top.
would be curious about the performance in left hand twist rifling and right hand to see if there is a difference
Probably none assuming they are identical quality and mirrored perfectly
Nvm Google says counter clock causes the bullet to go a little higher in flight path. While clockwise causes the bullet to fall a little more
Color me impressed. They're not cheap, though, about $1.60 per round directly from G9 Defense.
They look like the Lehigh bullets which are used in the Black Hills Honey Badger.
Interesting thoughts on why when the bullet came to rest backward with the shorter barrel? And, Thanks to Observer Will too!
Less spin to stabilize would be my guess.
That's FMJ performance.
I didn't expect so much damage.
Damm GS can shoot😮!!!!
Imagine what this would do in a 16" carbine.
@GunSam i bet G9 10mm thru a 16 inche barrel would be devastating
👍😊 if you need to be a solid they’ll work.
So when does the patent on that bullet run out so other people can actually start producing it? It IS the patent keeping others from making 'external hollow points' right? Not some other reason?
Was interested to see the HST ammo for comparison you mentioned as it's my round of choice, but never made it in.
I don't know what that means.
At the beginning of the vid, you mentioned using baseline ammo, one of the being Federal HST I thought I heard you say. That is what I was referencing.
Regardless good vid thanks for sharing.
They want you to eat only THEIR BUGS!
I have an Extar EP9 and. PSA Dagger. Is +P ammo that needs special barrels? Can I shoot +P with those barrels without ruining the system?
👍
Maybe I missed it in the video, but are the barrel twist rates the same between the two 9mm's? With an 80 grain bullet being extremely light for caliber I'm wondering if maybe that could be affecting the terminal performance and accuracy?
I do not know a lot about barrel twists or what my pistols have.
After some searching it looks like they both have a 1 in 10 twist, so it probably is the velocity difference. And now I'm out of ideas
Do you think this ammunition can be comparable with the 357 magnum?...sorry for my ignorance
@@GunSam ok...no comparison at all👍
In terms of the actual cartridge, a 9mm or even a 9mm+P out of a carbine might hit 600 ft lbs energy as where a .357 Magnum is easily over 1,000 ft lbs energy. The real comparison comes when a 2" .357 Mag snub nose is used, as often times the energy is at around 400 ft lbs which is about the same energy as 9mm+P in about the same size firearm. The .357 Mag has twice the recoil in guns that small though.
Have you tested Liberty Defense in 9mm?
I have a question: how quickly do these light for caliber bullets loose velocity compared to their more standard counterparts over longer distances? Is that something you could test with these and the 65 grain defenders?
I don't know really. I am sure there are calculators or other means to find out, but I don't really have a good way to test that myself.
@@GunSam Ah yes... ballistic calculators are a thing. Thanks for reminding me! :P
@@Sceptisthis is a self defense round. It’s hard to justify self defense at long range
isnt it just the same as fmj 9mm?!?
With ehp and xd type projectile designs coming out, traditional hp are becoming very outdated.
Can't say I agree. There's not really much real world data on how they perform against bad guys. There's a good chance they wouldn't work that great, but until I see some data, one thing I can say is that hollow points do work so I am going to keep using them.
Yeah they're a good solid copper bullet but why would you spend that much on it when you can bye Underwood Ammo for about half the price
And I should just say the extreme Defender
Okay nevermind the extreme Defenders 90 grains hard $21 box the cheapest I can find the G9 was 29
@@GunSamyeah I mean it's a pistol bullet you're more concerned with the penetration then damaged tracks, I mean I know the damage is good, what they say Island pathologist cannot tell the difference between a 9 mm or a 44 magnum till they locate the bullet, the skin elasticity starts to break after like two thousand feet a second
Which bullet was the most powerful, Thanks
this is more like the lehigh Extreme Protector than penetrator, the protector designed for damage
I think you mean the Extreme Defender
@@PatriotPaulUSA yeah that
Great video!!
124 grain gave best accuracy vs. 115 grain.
Why'd you have to punch that car window man :(
★ (2nd post) In your opinion, could you see hardcast, if possible, benefiting from that design at traditional bullet weights and average or +p velocities?
@GunSam ★
That's great information. More details than I had, as yet, considered. I really appreciate your answer. Thank you.
screw gun
Wilson combat has same thing
That bullet is coring the body as one would core an apple. I would caution anyone to not use it for self defense, as the prosecution will destroy you.
A clean shoot is a clean shoot. List names and dates of person prosecuted and when as a result of using this specific ammo.
How high are you 😮
These.....or Barnes TAC-XP bullets?
I personally would take the TAC-XP. They expand, they cut. I can't confirm that these bullets do anything other than look pretty in gel.
@@GunSam Haha. Yeah good point. Pun intended.
I can't remember who told me this on here, might have even been you lol...but they said there was a few instances of TAC-XP being used in the real world and they were extremely effective.
@@GunSam I have no personal experience. May have been someone else.
Someone said the one specific example was from a real world crime show, like the First 48 or something like that. They said the dead body contained an "extra lethal bullet" or something like that (you know how the anti-gun agenda spins things) and coming out of the body it was fully expanded to the typical massive 3/4" thing that they often do in gel.
...and it's only $1.65 per round, so that's about $165 before I'd trust it's functioning in a particular gun. The 10mms are $2.20 per round. Yikes!
I love your channel man, but, Sorry i love to see Stuff Blow up. And 9 Mighty Mite is far too Tame for me. Anyway today was Big Bore day for me , a buddy let me use his .45, It's a compact one, but it was fun to shoot. Anyway keep putting out great content, I'm out.
Who needs 7.62x25😂 damn 1600fps
Gimmick
@@allenbolen9705 To be clear, I wasn't training. I was just seeing how accurate the ammo is for this review.
@@GunSam I realize that. You would be using your carry ammunition. You shoot very well so it’s clear you’re getting some practice! Your everyday carry is a snuby revolver isn’t it?
Yeah I generally carry the LCR .327 Federal. That gun shoots pretty good, if I tried I think I could easily land at 100 yards also.
