  • Trail Guide | Upper Coyote Canyon | Re-tracing the 1775 Anza Expedition
In 1775 Spanish explorer and military officer Juan Bautista de Anza led 300 settlors and 1,000 livestock from Mexico to Northern California, the first Over-Land expedition of that route. During that expedition, his party camped during Christmas time along Coyote Canyon, near the town of Anza, CA, and within present day Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Here, I explore the canyon, showing you what not to miss, where to camp, and tips on navigation and obstacles.
Share your coyote canyon story below! Are you old enough to remember when it connected all the way through?

Have you visited this trail? What did you think?

We used to drive that trail all the way from Borrego Springs on up to the Turkey Track and beyond. Of course that was back before they decided to break the trail into two and not let people drive from one to the other. Bummer. It was fun.
My favorite sections were where we actually drove along the middle of flowing steams for a ways! One of them was really wide and in open. Didn't even feel like CA there. The other narrow narrow and through a dense grove of trees... had to be one of the "Willows" I guess. Upper one.

My Son-in-law and I did the Upper Canyon to Bailey Cabin about a month ago/April '24....rough trail, but the Tacoma made it down and back just fine. Had a blast!

@@joeThompson-ik9lu Yea, we got down ok but it was very washed out and slippery trying to ride back up. We were on adventure bikes; I fell over once, my friend on his Tiger like 4x LOL. It was a rough day. Once we were passed the very bottom section and could stand up with some momentum, it was mostly ok.
