Ford 6.0 Powerstroke lacks power. (low boost)

  • I had one here that is actually pretty common. When the boost or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor is not responding correctly the PCM will control the veins like a pop off or dump valve and not allow boost to build. sometimes it's as simple as a split hose.

    I have had my 6.0 for 5 years now ive done EGR, Oil cooler and EGR cooler 2 times now. Finally went with the Bulletproof EGR cooler. I have also done the FICM, i had 3 injector codes until one of my customer introduced me to Hotshots,it cleared all those miss symptoms. 3 weeks ago the transmission overheated and blew up. I had a local shop put in a new tranny. i got my truck back and there was a lack in boost that i was experiencing for about a year. i purchased a new Garrett turbo Stage 1 and installed it this morning. After the install there was NO boost. I was starting to believe the 6.0 horror stories. i started watching u tube videos of turbo install and removal and no one mentioned anything about the MAP hose. I watched your video, after about 20 others and my hose looked just like the one on your video. Went to the local Auto store paid $4.00 for a new MAP hose and the truck boosted like it was on steroids. Just wanted to say Thank you for all you have done for the 6.0 community.

    WOO! You just saved me an aneurism! I just did a bulletproof egr and oil cooler upgrade (using your videos) cause I bought a truck from a stealership that was bad. It took me a week and EVERYTHING went wrong that could. Finally got it together only to have issues with my turbo. Expecting the worst all day thinking I was going to drop a few hundered more on my "new" 2006 6.0. Last ditch effort, I find this video. Who'd have thunk it?! I had a cracked hose that broke during the installation process. I am soooo relieved I saw this before tearing into the turbo! Thanks Ron, your videos have been my guidance into the new life as a 6.0 owner.

    I was towing my 5thWheel and the check engine light came on. I pulled in had the codes printed out and it reported low turbo output. Took it to my sealer, truck has extended warranty, after them not checking it out for 7 days they come back to me that they couldn't replicate the codes so they recommended I "blow the gunk" with a good highway drive. Mind you, I had just driven across Idaho with my foot to the floor and there was plenty if time to blow the gunk out. I'm so ticked at my dealer I doubt I will go back. Needless to say, I am so glad I came across your video! I will he checking this hose for cracks, I probably will replace it just for good measure so I can take the old hose and spam it on the service counter at my dealer.

    This is the best video I have seen on this common boost problem to date. All those other fix-it websites rarely have the solutions, just the problems. Anyway, I started to work on this 2005 6.0, 239k miles, all original stock, after the owner said a mechanic gave up on it. I am never one to pass up a challenge, with the experience of working on just one of these 6.0's 4 years ago. I have, among several problems, no boost. The original problem was low power and stopping after warming up, with no start until cold. The hose was cracked as in this video, but after fix, still nothing on the boost. I suspected the valve cover tube was plugged so I put a wire through the hole to be sure it was clear of soot. Now, I am a week into this project, making progress, after changing the STC, cleaning the turbo, changing the FICM (wasn't problem anyway) and cleaning the EGR. I watched all the videos, they were helpful. According to the video I didn't need to change the FICM, did so anyway, but wasn't the problem. I should have listened. The previous mechanic changed the IPR, I'm guessing okay. So, I checked everywhere for a hose leak, air cooler leak, can't find one. So, I am going to look carefully at the MAP sensor. The turbo spins, produces some pressure (not sure how to test performance), but I can barely get the dash gauge to register 5 psi, most of the time, nothing. I plan to review many more videos and the way I see it sooner or later I will figure this out.

    • @henryhenry6308
      @henryhenry6308 8 лет назад

      I solved the problem with dieing after warm up, and not restarting until cooler. I changed the oil/fuel dummy plugs, both were degraded. I also changed the turbo VGT actuator. I tested the turbo connections with compressed, regulated air pressure, found two small leaks. All of this got my turbo boost solved. Yet, still stalled after warm up and running for few miles. BTW, I would lose oil pressure on the dash gauge. I thought it was the sender, so I changed that, but still after warmup, loss of engine oil pressure, but engine would still run though. However, as engine temp increased, engine would die. I noticed a lot of blow by also, wasn't sure about it. Plus, occasionally I would get white smoke under heavy acceleration. Then, I discovered the engine oil was diluted or too low viscosity, maybe a 5w/20 product? It may have been overfilled. I am not certain if it was diluted with an internal diesel leak somewhere, not sure if that is possible? After I changed the oil to 15W/40 CJ4 rated, made all the difference in world. This truck runs smooth, back to original power, nice running. I will have to monitor, maybe not over yet.

    So, first of all I'm going to start by saying this. I hate that I jumped to the conclusion that my vains were sticking. So what do I do when I wake up yesterday morning? I go to my 2005 F350 and pop the hood and precede to take the turbo out so I can clean it and put back together (Which I watched your video on how to do). I do that, bring it inside and worked on it. I go on with my day and come back home last night and reinstalled the turbo. To my surprise, after I reinstalled it, still lack of power. I struggled with this problem all night. Even convinced myself that it was time for a new turbo. As I come inside at 5 am the next day (today) I decided to google "Common 6.0 low boost problems" and this video came up. I seriously don't know why I didn't look this beforehand. Here I am, 6 am I'm the morning, I pop open the hood one last time, check the hose and there it is, unplugged. Hell, I took it for a test drive and this puppy is breathing better than she has ever breathed before.

    I've been working on 6.0s for well over 15yrs and I still always forget to connect the MAP supply back to the intake🤦‍♂️🤣....also,just a heads up to anyone still having boost issues, it may be a bad BARO sensor, which is mounted under the steering column, behind the access panel...looks like a relay(kinda), but uses a 3 wire pigtail...that sensor basically reads barometric pressure for altitude changes and controls your fuel and boost curve which will give you some major loss of power.......RIP Ron

      What would happen if you unplugged the map hose from intake and put in a electric boost sensor. Will it effect anything? Reason I ask is because I put a banks intake elbow and it doesn't have any holes to thread a boost sensor in. Or would it be better to T off the map line?

    Often overlooked is a plugged up exhaust system that prevents the turbo from spooling up. Put your hand over the tail pipe to feel the exhaust flow. If you think its weak, separate the pipe at the joint just before the Cat, and take it for a test drive. If your power is back, some exhaust work will fix you back up. I ordered the parts, but driiled a 1-1/4” hole with a hole saw thru the side of the cat and muffler to keep driving till the exhaust pipes came in. Plenty of boost immediately!

    Hi there, I do believe that the MAP sensor is the culprit in my case, the nipple on the sensor is broke off. However, I don't see a nipple on the intake manifold; the only thing I see is a grey hose (looks like for vacuum) and that the hose runs behind the cab blower manifold. I am new the these engines so I don't know much about them. Thank you!

With H&S programmer, periodically depending how you accelerate and how quickly when you hit overdrive, the boost goes to 0 and stays there for a few minutes. If you put truck in neutral while riding down the road and shut off ignition and restart, go back to drive, the boost returns or if you remove foot from throttle and wait a few seconds the boost returns. I'm thinking some sensor is bad but not sure which one. Can you help?

    Hi, Ron, I do have issue on the low boost and changed the turbo tube at low and high side. It's got better but still feel the lack of power.. I will check it to the small hose you talked about and can you tell us what is the part number or name for that part.? So I can order it at the ford shop. Thanks

    my turbo builds body very very very slowly until it hits about 8psi, then it builds no problem, but as soon as i let up on the throttle at all, it loses all boost almost instantly. what do you think it is?

      Cody Morgan check your hose clamps. check the rubber for tears see if there lose Check your intercooler to see if there's a hole in it or the side that's plastic that was famous for cracking and leaking

      if it was a bearing failure you would know by now. Either an exhaust leak or pressure leak at the intake or turbo. can you duplicate by power braking it? if so safely i wrote safely listen and find it.

    05 6.0 , # 5 cylinder is filling with fuel, I pulled the glow plug truck starts then dies after 45 sec. oil is over full. I don't want to pull this engine apart if a simple test is available also just picked up the new scantool now I'm going home to figure it out
